Hi! NICE review!! I'm the creator of the Hero's fanducts... I move to U.S. and left my ender 3 behind... but I'm thinking on buy a new one... or create a Hypercube, will see later... but I'm thinking on a new "Hero" model... I really did those fanduct's for myself... but what happens with the Hero Me was unexpected!! people really like them! I know you didn't test the original Hero Me, but the Gen 3 is a great addition by mediaman!!!
The problem with the Hero V2 is that the stock blower is too weak to deliver air to the 2 sides... that's why I create the Hero Me... but!! I want to make a new one with all I learned from them both... so... when I get my hands on a new printer I'll do something new and better!!!!

Moving from Hero. Printing is tragic, you need a lot of custom supports. And at the very end I found that the Bltouch holder is not compatible with Bltouch, there is not enough space to fix it with screws. Meh.
@@madrian_hello I agree with the support issue. I find that "Touching Buildplate" takes care of most of the supports needed though. It wasn't the worst. 0.12 layer height. I just did a video where I use the BLtouch on my Ender 5 Plus and it worked great!
You did a great job of covering those coolers. Keep in mind not all blowers are created equal because mine had higher CFM; My blowers are overkill for my printer because it wouldn't let it properly bond to layers as it became mildly solidified while extruding. I had to turn those fans down as low as 30% and 60% for awesome bridging.

Agree, I liked the approach and thoroughness, without any extra and unnecessary content. Clean simple testing that was very helpful for me. I've held back from running a cooler mod but am going to print that Hero Me version and give it a go.
Congrats on a great review and for choosing to include my Hero Me Gen3 in the group of cooling solutions you tested. I am very pleased but not surprised that you got the great results using the Hero Me Gen3, as your testing matches the testing I and my collaborators have done over the past year. I am MediaMan, the designer of the Hero Me Gen3 ( a major remix of the great original work by Kelokera). As I don't have an Ender 5 to test against, I was not aware of the extra work needed to get the Hero Me mount attached to the base. I will look into how this could be made easier.. As others have mentioned, it is very easy to mount the Hero Me Gen3 on CR-10/S/Pro/V2 and Ender 3/Pro printers. I too would be interested in your comparing the Hero Me Gen3 against David Petsel's excellent Bullseye and Petsfang V2 cooling systems. I'd also like to mention that the Hero Me has an excellent remix community that has added dozens of derivatives, various improvements, and versions for other 3D printers (ANet, DaVinci, etc.) and extruder types (Bondtech, DirectDrive, etc.) for the Hero Me (almost all are backward compatible to the original). With the help of great reviews like yours, in just over one year my Hero Me Gen3 cooling systems have grown in popularity to now be downloaded over 30 thousand times a month!

See - #8.5 for comparison of the Hero Me Gen3 against David Petsel's Bullseye and Petsfang. Especially as Bullseye was one of my first mods - printed in PLA and the fans already deformed a bit. I bought new blowers - I am looking for alternative: Hero Me or Petsfang :) that could be printed with PETG.

I'm running the Petsfang/Bullseye dual duct on the Ender 5 with stock fans and have been pretty happy with it. Of course, no way to know how it compares to these. Great review and you clearly put a lot of work into your channel which is appreciated.

Kersey Fabrications nice video! Surprised you didn't try Bullseye and/or Petsfang as those seem way more commonly used than most of the ones you tried (I'd only ever heard of the Hero Me out of the ones you tried). But aside from that, really enjoyed the thoroughness, great job!

I'm running stock fans on my Ender 3 and CR-10s but I see no need to change until filament cooling becomes a real problem.

Ok... now I'm on the hunt for an installation video of the Hero Me Gen3 on an Ender 5. I came back to watch and I searched your video and I don't think you show how it's installed? As I said before, thanks for all this work, you saved us an enormous amount of time.

Ok... Well I was hoping for one that’s a bit slower. What type of screws used where and how to calibrate the nozzle location as my understanding is we want to cool the part where the new plastic meets the part being printed and not the hot-end.
Also, it would be great to include how to print the darn parts. Orientation and slicer settings recommends for Cura and maybe Simplify3D. I wasted hours of printing to have the main duct unit break while trying to remove supports. My second print was better, yet supports were still a bit of an issue.
When I searched RUclips I found one person that takes a bit slower install onto an Ender 3. I have the Ender 5. But it’s about the same. I also have the EZABL.

A lot of effort for a little improvement. Stock cooler is better than many think. For general user probably not worth doing. I would recommend offsetting your terminal location s when modding the cables. End result is a neater/tidier cable routing.
I thought the improvement was pretty significant for my needs. I know CHEP said the same thing though. Stock cooling was great for everything he does. Thanks for the cabling tip.
Hey mate thanks for sharing this series I have learnt some new things. I have an Ender 6 and I just ordered a all metel Biqu H2 and a bl touch. Would you recommend switching to Klipper or stick with Marlin. I will be setting up a raspberry pi on it also.

I wonder about the voltage. Since its designed for one radial fan, and you tossed two 5015s.. the power to each fan would be insufficient. That might explain how two fans at "100%" work but fail at "80%". I will check how much power the port provides later today when I get back to reassembling my ender. Though I know you are lowering the power for noise.

I am starting to think that the dual duct systems are an advantage for symmetry BUT so much cooling efficiency is lost by the collision of the air that it doesn't really shine like it should. I am experimenting with single duct massive flow coolers. It's not as symmetric obviously but I find that the print quality is drastically better.
Well, if you find one where overhangs on any side look equivalent, let me know. When printing helmets, I don't want to do more work on the left than the right.
A radial and blower fan is the same type of fan the other one you are using is Callesen an Axial fan. By the way should check out the new hero Me Gen 6👍
Seeing as the quality of the overhangs increased with bigger cooling area, wouldn't it be a good idea to use a bigger fan, without (or with minimal) air duct, to cool the whole printed part more evenly?
You don't need to cool the whole part, only where the filament is being laid down. Once cooled, it shouldn't sag.

A Q for you. Any particular reason you don't use a 40x20 fan instead of a 40x10 on the HeroMe? Should render potential better performance AND lower noise (relatively). looking at the HeroMe design there seems to be no reason why the increased height of the fan should be an issue? The Sunon vapo bearing fans seems to be popular for performance fans that are quiet.
I've never needed a larger fan there, for airflow or noise. Both seem good with the 40mm fan I use. Only the blowers are particularly loud IMO. That certainly doesn't mean there aren't better options.
If you look at the left side fan, it has the hotend cooling fan right infront of it blocking off air flow

So, quite confused here after this video, so maybe two questions, using an ender 5 now with silend board ( and the fans beeing loudest now :D ):
- is any of the setups capable of making the hotend fan less noisy?
- which one of your examples would be best here?
- would replacing the fan with a more quiet one without the new fan duct do the job as well?

In that video I measure noise on some of the better performing options. In order to really answer your question, I'd have to specifically target low noise versus good cooling. My opinion would be to go for the best cooling and then just turn down the maximum fan speed to what you're looking for noise-wise and do some tests. That's no necessarily going to produce the very best results but it's the most flexible solution.

i have been tinkering with my ender5, and found out that the x-carriage mount is different enough from the ender3 and cr10 such that you cannot use mounts that clip to the side of the x-carriage of the 3d printer. Also, the gt2belt position causes problems with the compatibility with some mounts.
That's true. All of these mounts either had Ender 5 variations or required little or no mods to get them installed.

the left uses ambient air, the right uses air that left the hotel so it cools less, so the difference, mounted from the front the fans take the air from the left

the problem with your left fan is that the incoming airflow is partially blocked so it does not produce as much air through that side. it is just a design flaw in the duct.

What has been worrying me is that the Ender 5 plus have a different mounting bracket (from what I've gathered) so many of the popular options, generally designed for the Ender 3 and CR 10 without modification. To what degree is that true? Someone suggested just buying a spare CR/Ender bracket and swap out the E5+ one, thoughts on that?
The Ender 5 and Ender 5 Plus have the same bracket. There are a lot of mounting options available for the Ender 5. All of the coolers I reviewed in both of these videos for example.

Great video. I got to be careful with mountings because my Ender 5 is direct drive and has a different plate. I'll look into this Hero Me Gen3. What's got me stumped is you went through the wiring part too fast, adding that second set of wires. Thanks
Yeah, the mounting may be different since I'm sure the inlet is different. Sorry if that went too quickly. I actually forgot to show how I did dual fans. For that I simply made a splitter. I can post some pictures to my social accounts. Are you on any other platform?

Since there is so small "gain" over the default cooling, would it not be good if the dual one, actually where based on dual 4010? Does not seem the fan itself - improve to much?
Reson for askin is to keep the whole part as narrow as possible (valid point on a Ender5)
I didn't include it for time but I did test a dual 4010 configuration. The performance was terrible! So until I find a cooler that actually is marginally worth using, I can't recommend it.
thanks for the video and all the testing. the 'my hero' cooler seems great, but I don't understand why they need to have the heat block offset. I am going to put a microswiss on the used ender 5 plus I just got. either way I want to upgrade the cooler. just don't understand why move the hot end when it is so easy to not move it, thus no customized offsets and minimize the chance of a nozzle that isn't completely vertical due to weak print or over tightening hardware

How does the extra weight of the larger coolers/fans affect the stepper motor? Is there any extra current draw that will eventually burn out the drive circuit?
I've never seen any adverse affect on the motors to extra weight. You'd see skipping before the motor failed.
Any firmware updates needed for the Hero Gen Me 5?
Will your old firmware work?
Technically, yes, it will work. The offset may be off some but it's still better than the stock firmware.

One issue though, fans are not all the same. With out knowing what fan you used, we can not expect the same results.
I really wish an engineer with experience in hydrodynamics would address cooling issues. Even as a "just a random smart guy," some of these are obviously poorly designed to me.

The item name in the description for the fans say 24v. Does the Ender 5 by default have a 24v rail? or is this A) a typo? B) is a boost converter used? C) Can you just power the 24v from 12v?

There could be some electrical issues. It won't be a problem though if your fan is off during probing.

It's probably still a little louder with the blowers but not bad. Plus it cools more evenly.
Hi So having this quiet main board there is no need of them motor dampers anymore , like we used to install on the older printers ?
That's correct. TMC steppers don't need them.
Which material should we print the Hero Me with, ABS or PLA? I am going to be upgrading to the Micro swiss print head , does that make a difference?

newbie question ... How do you change the speed to 75% on dual fan setup ? Does it change the hotend fan speed as well at the same time ?
In Cura, there is a "Fan Speed" setting under "Cooling." The hot end fan should be hard wired at 100%. This will not affect it.

how did you wire the dual fans in as the printer only has 1 connector to plug the fan in
I just made a Y-adapter using the proper connectors and wires. Maybe I'll make a show on how to create on sometime.

Wouldn't you need to do a PID tune with each setup?
Technically, yes. Practically, not really. There are a lot of variables such as how much cooling the nozzle receives. I always watch for fluctuations in the temps to see if it's needed.
Just added a fan onto an ender 3 v2 setup, have the 2 fans spliced together but when u turn in the machine it doesn't go past the name upon boot, what do I do?

Question today i took my one year old ender 5 in the garge and used my compresser to clean it... then i put it back an powered it up and noticed only the fan that is mounted on inside of hotend turned on ...the one mounted on outside was not spinning... are both fans supposed to turn when machine is powered on??? or does out side mounted one turn on after print is started??? thanks

What layer thickness and line width did you print the overhang tests with?
It was a while back but most likely 0.2mm layers with a 0.4mm line width.
Kersey Fabrications fwiw, overhang performance also depends on layer height vs line width ratio. The lower the layers and the wider the lines, the more support the overhang has by the layer beneath. I’d be curious if these results hold true with lower layer heights, or if it’s possible to compensate for worse cooling by using lower layer heights or larger line widths
It would be an interesting analysis. For the purpose of this video, it was a comparative difference between the cooling solutions and I think most people use those settings from day to day.

I believe all of them were m3 screws but I don't recall the lengths. My suggestion is to buy a multipack off of somewhere like Amazon so you have options. You'll probably use these in the future anyway: amzn.to/3cN8Cp4
Are there not any quiet blower fans for sale?
There aren't really any inherently quiet blower fans. I've heard good things about Sunon fans but I think they're all 12V fans and most modern printers are 24V. There are two good solutions though BUT keep in mind both of these reduce air flow. Only testing can tell you how much.
1) Buy a 12V fan and a buck converter to take 24V to 12V.
2) Take your 24V fan and just run a lower speed. I think all slicers allow you to set the max fan speed. Instead of 100%, choose 85% or 50%, whatever works for you. Since I have dual 5015 blowers, I typically run my fans at 85% to keep vibration down.
@@kerseyfabs i have looked up some sunon 5015 blower fans, they run at 39dB wich seems pretty good. The only problem is that they don’t sell them in my area (the Netherlands) so i’m probably going to buy 2 24 volt 5015 blower fans in combination with the hero me gen5 and run them at lower speed. I've seen some people using actual infrared tests with exotic part cooling methods. Having air on the bottom of an enclosure pumped up into a pvc or 3d printed long duct parallel to the built plate was beyond just noticable, it might actually be bad for some materials. What i haven't seen done is a fanless hotend heatsink setup. Anyone seen anything like this? Using an independent high output fan that ends with hidden outputs aimed at the heatsink without obstructing them. This is not for practical reasons just something that seems interesting to try but if anyone has done this let me know.

damn i guess the gen 3 was replaced by gen 7 now. Bunch of reviews talk major shit on it... Guess I'll try it? If it does the over hang better or equal to i guess ill run it

All of these should also be available for the Ender 3.
If you get a better slicer profile, you won't need to rely on cooling as much.
I disagree. The only other cures for overhangs would be slower printing or more supports. Neither of which seems better than my solution.
How on earth can you do a proper comparison without a bullseye?
