Stop with the: “Speyburn 15 is a good bottle.” It’s been my secret weapon for around 8 years now! I need the brand to be obscure so I can buy it cheaply! 😂
Roy is to blame for my purchase of the 15. 😄I now have both the 15 & 18 and agree that there is a difference. I find the 15 is a little more spirit forward whereas the 18 is rounder and fruitier. Both are really good though. Cheers!
I am happy the 15 year is favored. It is the only one available in my area currently. Also, yes, I blame Roy and his only fans account for the 15 year being so sought after.
Great comparison. Spot on. I had both of these back to back last week while watching football. Had the 18 first, loved it, and thought I'd try the 15 to compare, thinking it wouldn't measure up. But it did, in its own way. I intend to keep both on hand, but be more sparing with the 18. At $65 vs $140, the 15 is the better value, but life is too short, gimme both. Cheers!
I knew you'd have a preference for the 15. Not to say your flavor preferences will be anchored there forever. I have mixed feelings about the 15. the most current session for it was scored a 3.5/5 which is like an 84/100. For a craft presented bottle, I feel like it lacks the oomph and presence to match the abv.
I totally impulse bought a bottle of 15 year old Speyburn a few weeks ago because of Roy and Co. And the price was great too - Diageo sells their NAS whiskies for more sometimes. It states non-chill filtration and no coloring added on the back of the box. I’m with you, weird that they didn’t put it front and center on the label. It’s also strange to me that the Speyburn 10 y.o. so bleak and uneventful compare to its older siblings.
For the 15-year-old, it says on the front of the bottle label, in small print in the description at the bottom right, that it is not colored and not chill-filtered.
Hey Geoff I think I prefer the 18 for what the brand offers in general. It's on average 30 euro more where I am but still I feel like it's worth the up pay. Glad you are enjoying the Speyburn 18 so much 😎 Have a great weekend my friend! Cheers 🥃🥃
Yeah I definitely think it's well priced and worth it for the 18 year old. Even though I prefer the 15 and its value, I'm sure to replace the 18 year old eventually too. Both are excellent! 🥃
I visited Speyburn not long ago and had both in the tasting, preferring slightly the 18 on account of the more evident spice and herb characters I could pick up. But I really like the point you make about spending prolonged time with a bottle as opposed to simply having tasted something; it makes for a much more true personal judgement, and this consideration is something that I will endeavour to keep in mind.
both exellent whiskies. Two great drams in a price of one. Should be bought as a 2pack as a two sides of same coin. Its good H2H Goeff. Cheers and Slàinte 🥂🙋🏻♂️
Glad you discussed how time spent going back to the bottle can show the change in the whiskey, for better or for worse, if there is any. Because it's a fact that some whiskeys do get worse over time with oxidation and some get better.
I had a really good single cask, cask strength Speyburn 15 Old Particular (Douglas Laing) bottle last year. Characterful distillate not swamped by the sherry cask and an absolute steal at 50 GBP. An underrated distillery!
Hi Geoff,a good comparison video. Had the 10 and the braden orach(think it’s called) and got the 15 and 18 and there both unopened sitting quietly in my cellar 😄👍. Slàinte Geoff.🥃
I could not agree more on your judgement Geoff. Except for that for me the 18 is the spicier and the 15 the creamy one. Very different, very good are the short takeaways.
I haven’t tried these yet, but the 15 is definitely on my shopping list. A craft presented whisky with an age statement and a decent price tag is such a rarity nowadays. Speaking of age statements, have you noticed that Glenmorangie has released a 16 yo version of the Nectar d’or. This one’s called just Nectar and it’s bottled at 46% ABV. In Europe you can get a bottle under 80€. It’s propably chill filtered, but still I think it ticks suprisingly many boxes. For Glenmorangie that is ;)
I'd love to see a review of a Yushan since you're in Taiwan Geoff. I bought the sherry cask and I thought it was a decent sherry forward whisky with some interesting tropical fruit notes but I'd like to hear your thoughts on it 🤗
That brand is sold as "Nantou" here, from the TTL distillery. I've actually looked at it before on the channel and I enjoyed it. Although the bottle is different, it's my understanding that it's in fact the same release. 🥃
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Geoff. Still have to check them both. Kinda hesitant due to a. sherry influence and b. I have enough great stuff in the cabinet already....so my guess is the hesitance will linger on for quite some time. Slàinte mhath
Great comparison Geoff! Between the two I favor the 18 because the 15 (at least the bottle I got) drinks fairly hot. Also I’d take the Edradour 12 or the Signatory Edradour 10 over either of these every time…..Edradour is kinda my jam when it comes to Sherry matured scotch.
That's fair. The 15 is well known to be quite batchy. Can't argue with the Edradour comment, although the style of sherry couldn't be more different. Cheers! 🥃
Hey, be careful about bashing the 10yo. 😄 Speyburn has a 10 year old TRAVEL RETAIL offering that is bottled at 46% (the regular stuff is 40) and it is stated as non-chill filtered. And it's cheap. And it comes in a liter bottle. Way better than the regular 10.
Never dipped my toe or palate should I say into Speyburn. That is about to change as I have just ordered Speyburn 18. The price difference between the 15 and 18 seemed justifiable in this particular purchase for me.
Thank you for your review. Was wondering if you considered reviewing the Bladnoch 19 PX release. It's a great Lowland whisky with dark sherried colors akin to the older style Macallan and Glendronach sherried lines.
Great review, Geoff. Ive replaced the 15 already. Can't beat the price for the age where I am. I have a sample of the 18 that I've been saving for my own side by side Speyface...burn...off to justify buying a bottle to my wife. Spoiler alert, I'm going to like it and my purchace will be completely logical. Come to think of it, I might keep hyping it up to give her the idea to buy it for me for Valentine's Day. It's got a red label after all. Good talk, Geoff. You convinced me that my wife will hopefully buy this bottle for me for Valentine's Day, you cupid in disguise. 💘 Woof. I just pictured your head on a toddler's body with tiny wings and wearing nothing but a diaper. I gotta wash my brain out with soap now.
If you want a full on hit of sherry the Glenallachie will likely suit you more. The Speyburn, for me, strikes a better balance between cask and distillate, though. Cheers! 🥃
@@kaylashae3915 I prefer the GA12 to the GA15, so it's a bit closer. I think they're about equal, especially when it comes to value. Again, the GA is more richly sherried, but they're both good. My preference is still the Speyburn, though.

Blame Roy. 😉
Underwelmed by the 15 yo, but love the 18 yo. Both are worthy buys. Get one up ya!
Tried 15, and I love its clean, crispy, zest along with the sherry influence over the palate.
I love The 18y. Have not tested 15 yet.

Spayburn in general has that beautiful funk that all good spaysides have ,15 is such a great value dram
Agree! 🥃

Hello Geoff,
Nice Video as Always.
I had both, i like both,nothing more to add.😅
Greetings from Germany 😎🤘
Excellent comparison! I was actually wondering how much different the 18 would be. So thanks! Cheers!
I have the 10 ( Travel edition, 46% ABV, ) it's great. Agree on the 18, I haven't tried the 15 yet. There is a 16 travel edition in the market.
@auberginenpeter7189 I believe each person have their personal preferences. Perhaps G Whisky should review this one!
I'm sure the 46% is at least a step up from the regular 10 at 40%. Was not a fan of that one. 🥃

Our club ranked the 15 high. Can’t remember if we’ve done the 18.
Good precise review Geoff. Would love to know which other whiskies might have similar characteristics.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been looking at them.

got the 18 arriving today funnily ... (£72 deal, ie not much more than the 15 , so couldn't resist) will be my first Speyburn
