    Very nice comparison to remind us that it's not that Macallan is awful; it's just spectacularly overpriced ... Cheers!

      Nailed it Tim. It's perception of value, at $300 it's not a good purchase, at $150 we start looking at things differently.

    Many thanks once more, mate!
    Where i come from the Macallan 15 is sold for the down payment on an okay car and that at 40% abv - i hope i´ll never ever be hammered enough to order one of them. The 12 double cask is sitting there on my shelf exclusively for a very dear friend who loves Macallan, but he´s no big whisky geek by any means. I`ll give him a Tamdhu 15 for his next birthday and hope he´ll ask me for those in the future . Of course i´ll never tell him who´s a cigar lover about the exisctence of their 250€ cigar malt.
    The Tamdhu 15 is a beautiful dram through and through and i absolutely love it. My bottle is very slightly chillfiltered if so at all. I see scottish mist after a few drops of water almost immediately. I´ve got that one since four weeks and it got better since then without a doubt. It´s such a rich and complex whisky where a drop of water and a bit of time really do wonders. To drink that one out of a tumbler should be prohibited and harshly punished (by having to drink a bottle of jura 10 for example)
    As usual, here comes my recommendation for you: I bought Glenglassaugh 12, Sandend and Portsoy lately and love all of them. I was blown away by the 12 especially and after some dozen of your videos i´m sure you´ll love it as much as i do.

      Will be interesting to see if your friend indeed enjoys the Tamdhu 15. I like your comment that it should be prohibited to drink it from a tumbler!
      Appreciate the recommendation for me too. I did try all three of the Glenglassaugh new expressions at a whisky show and the Portsoy is the pick of the 3 IMO. I probably need to revise them as I was less impressed than I wanted to be with them at the time, but having said that it wasn't time with the bottle, only samples.
      Thank you for the connection and comments!

      @@McIntyresMalts It’s weird how different the reviews of the new Glenglassaugh line are. Everyone seems to have a favourite, about which he‘s enthusiastic, while the other two are „okay“ - Gwhisky found so nice words for the Sandend, a lot of other guys too, I was underwhelmed somehow - high expectations considered. I think it’s good, maybe even very good, but not excellent. For you the Portsoy, for me the 12 - in any case I highly recommend bottles.
      If I had judged Bunnahabhain by my first impression of newly opened bottles of 12, Toiteach and Stuiredair few years back I would have never come back - now they are among my alltime favourites. In german we call those kind of bottles Halsstinker (‚neck-stinkers‘). The more natural it is, the higher the chance it develops over time. Often they are more fun in the end.
      One last word about the Macallan misery: beautiful house style, great casks without a doubt - but Tamdhu 15 vs double Cask 15 means in Germany €90 at 46% vs €180 at 40%. In Rugby terms that’s a 46:0

      @@McIntyresMalts The very dear friend which loves Macallan came over surprisingly few days ago. We sat down and after a nice dinner with two good robusto sized cigars on the table i said, wait, we need to try something first.
      Tamdhu 15, Glencairns, just a drop of water and i gave them ten minutes before i brought them in - the face was priceless the first second after the nose went into the Glencairn. You saw a spotaneous smile, the eyes where sparkling immediately and after he tried it he did exactly what you do here at 05:30, he chuckled and shook his head with a wide smile - and i knew, yes, one more Tamdhu Fan in this world.

      The 15 is definitely a step up against what the 12 offers. I have had incredible Macallans, they just cost way too much when comprable incredible experiences can be found elsewhere at lower price points

    One thing that might explain the similarities between the two is that Tamdhu would have been under the same ownership as Macallan back when these 15yo whiskies were distilled (up until 2011). So chances are that the sherry casks were sourced from the same producer, explaining the similarities in these cask-led whiskies.

    • @mk.5706
      @mk.5706 24 дня назад

      I tried the 18 and it was the most bitter disappointment of 2023 for the simple reason of being watered down way too much. At 43% the 21 makes me at least suspicious.
      The Glenlivet 12 'Illicit still' at 48% abv and unchillfiltered sounds very interesting though, That one i´d love see Wade reviewing.

    • @McIntyresMalts
      @McIntyresMalts  24 дня назад

      I would love to taste and review the Glenlivet 21 for you my friend, but in my market it costs upwards of $500! for a whisky that is only 43% ABV, chill-filtered and probably artificially coloured as well 😔 A price I just can't justify for a whisky with those specs.
      More than happy to review it if someone wants to buy me a bottle 😂
      So if it helps, even if it tastes amazing, based on the price alone I don't recommend it.

    • @McIntyresMalts
      @McIntyresMalts  24 дня назад

      I recently tried samples of both the licensed dram and the illicit still and they weren't bad at all. I would definitely lean into them instead of the 18 too, purely because they are better presented in terms of ABV etc

    Not a fan of grape influenced whiskies, sso I give them both a pass.
    Based on the marketing bullshit (and accompanying price tag) of the Macallan it's a clear win for the Tamdhu.

    The Tamdhu bottle looks better too. Love my 15. Honestly the Tamdhu is also overpriced (albeit not as much as the Macallan), at least in my market.

      @McIntyresMalts  20 дней назад +1

      Yeah agree with the Tamdhu also being overpriced, but I’m sure they know they are an alternative to Macallan so they up their price knowing they will still come in under Macallan.

      Yes, but I get the sense they are trying (ever so slightly) in my market to begin increasing the price compared to other 15 year old whiskies. Perhaps they are aware of what they have vs Macallan.

      @@McIntyresMalts Not to be that guy, but why did you compare it to the double cask instead of the sherry cask? (just an aside, but it seems impossible to find tamdhu 15 here in thailand. Mac everywhere.. for a price)

    • @McIntyresMalts
      @McIntyresMalts  20 дней назад

      @hessjason good question my friend! As far as I’m aware there is no Macallan 15 Sherry Cask (the 12-year-old and the 18-year-old expressions have a Sherry cask version). Having said that the Double Cask is American oak that’s been Sherry seasoned vatted with European oak it’s been Sherry seasoned.
      This expression is already double the Tamdhu price so if there was a Macallan 15 Sherry Cask, there’s no way I’d pay what they ask for it, hope this helps 🥃
