I thought that the plastic cap was the most recent Early Times but I got it confused. That is my bad. Apologies.
Don’t apologize to these fools! Keep up the good work, and make sure Wild Turkey wins the next one! 😂
How about an Early Times bourbon skirmish? Curious to know if they're really very different. I've never found a plastic cap.
@@MathewSchaffer they are night and day different. Go to Sam's Whiskey Bar. My buddy set me up a blind on it.
@@MathewSchaffer they are very, very different unfortunately
1. Coopers 100
2. Early times BIB
3. Old forester 100
4. Old grandad 114
5. Jim Beam Double Barrel
6. Four Roses Yellow label
7. Fighting Cock
8. Jts brown
9. Very old Barton 100
10. Evan Williams white label 100
11. Benchmark 100
All great values for inexpensive sippers or mixers.
Thank you Matt! You rock 🪨!!!
Great list but you're missing my favorite cheap bourbon: Old Tub!
@@brayoungful I so wish I could agree maybe I had a bad bottle. It was extremely hard to drink. Seriously. Maybe I’ll try it again but man it was rough. Thank you for the feedback.
@@hemlock1013 I had a similar experience with Old Barton. I'll give it another try, and you can try another Old Tub 😁
Benchmark is my favorite of these
I can only get the OF100, Jim Beam double oaked, FRYL, and the EWWL and the first 3 are great choices IMO but the EW I can do without.
Would be interesting to do this with the new metal cap Early Times. I've noticed stores that have black caps mark them up in the $40 - $50 range.
The new metal caps are still the same juice, just bottled by at a different location by barton, who's contracted to make the new juice. Sazerac got all the old stock when they purchased ET. That' what they've been putting in the new bottles. Because of BIB rules, you won't see the new Sazerac/Barton juice until late 2024 or early 2025 at the earliest.
@@AnAbortiveRomance I think the main thing is the blending is different. It’s no surprise they both taste different because of this. Black cap tastes a touch better for me and seems to be the consensus online as well
@@C_GOODIES Even under black cap, they did 2 batches per year. I'd guess there were small differences between all those batches. That's not to say how barton goes about its' bottling process couldn't affect the taste too. But the real test will be when it's also Barton juice.
@@AnAbortiveRomance very true. Good convo. We’ll see how things will shake out
I've tasted both side by side. Even if it's the same juice, it's not the same quality. I've bought 3 bottles since the chang over and they've gotten steadily worse :(
Would absolutely love a day of bowling and whiskey with Matt Porter!
Early Times BIB is my favorite. It is my “daily” sipper, which means 1 pour a week. I have 10 bottles of the Early Times BIB with the black cap bunkered. 🥃
Just call it your weekly then
@@BigBadJerryRogers "daily sipper" is a colloquialism used in the whiskey community to refer to a whiskey that isn't necessarily amazing, or super complex, or all that expensive, but is nevertheless pretty good and something you can pour "every day" so to speak, and still be content/satisfied. No need for you to be pedantic about it man lol.
@@jeremybamgbade I don't need you explaining it to me but to state the obvious if something is on the average once every 7 days which would be a week, it's appropo to reference it that way. Just as if I said I do something weekly but it's every four weeks. Which would actually be monthly. Thanks for weighing in.
@@BigBadJerryRogersyou said
"I don't need you explaining it to me"
But then you went on to demonstrate that you do in fact need me to explain it you. The irony appears to be lost on you. If he is using a colloquialism, it is silly to criticize him for not using a word or a phrase 'properly' when colloquialisms are specifically employed in contexts where speaking literally or properly isn't the goal.
@@jeremybamgbade My monthly thing to do is to go to the park near my house. Which means I make it there once a year. 😆
Just bought OGD Bonded due to this video. Look forward to giving it a sip. Thanks for your hard work on these!
Fun stuff. Would like to see how Old Tub would do
Matt, I watch several bourbon You Tubers. I'm at the point that I click Like and Save even before watching your videos. By far, you are my favourite to watch. Your honest, straightforward, and very often humourous reviews are the reason. I liked this video in particular because you review bourbons that are closer to my price point.
Hey Matt. Loved this video, but sure would have liked to see the Early Times blue cap since black caps are pretty much gone.
Loved this one. For me, it's about the available, budget pours. Thanks.
Very Old Barton 100 kind of surprised me, considering it's very low price. I prefer ET or OGD114, but those cost almost twice as much.
Matt you should do a review/comparison of the best plastic bottles, like Ancient Ancient Age and Old Taylor.
I really like the Early Times BiB, but Old Granddad 114 is my favorite less expensive bottle. I can usually get it between $22-26.
REverse for me, I used to prefer OGD114, but the palate on ET is more up my ally. No too long ago, I could've got a case of OGD for $16 a bottle.
Same for me. It’s $20 in my area.
Early Times B&B will be in the shopping cart today. Thank you for sharing.
Whoops, maybe not. Sticking with Wild Turkey 101 until this gets sorted.
You should have included old Forester 100 (signature). I'm curious how it would have faired. Early Times bib is my favorite too, however.
And Early Times BiB is a LITRE! Bonus bang for your 24 bucks!
My local stores had em for $15-16 last year…maybe around September I stopped being able to find them and I haven’t done any wider searching. I’m worried the people in my area caught on, I must’ve bought half a dozen bottles earlier last year and nobody was touching them.
Fabulous video Matt! Live this. Very enjoyable to watch! Cheers!
I have never been more nervous by $3.54 of whiskey spinning around. Would have loved to see Jim Beam Double Barrel and Four Roses Yellow in this lineup, really surprisingly good for the price. Would swap out the WT 101 as the word is out and it is closer to 30 round these parts, so is the Early times to be honest, but it's for a liter so....Great job Matt.
Great video, have had the WT101 and the Benchmark Bonded, like them both and the price was right. Like the self deprecating humor.
Evan Williams BIB. Early times is now allocated where I live because of you tube.
I recently did a sub $25 blind tasting with a friend and here was my order:
1) Fighting Cock
2) JTS Brown
3) Ancient Ancient Age
4) Early Times bib
Compared to the others Early Times had an off note that really stood out and sent it to the bottom. Fighting Cock had the most flavor by far, but was also a bit hot. In the past JTS Brown has beat out some sought after bottles including Blanton's - hits way above it's price point.
Wish we could find JTS and AAA in MI. We don't get many of the good cheap stuff here.
Oh how I’ve missed the bourbon skirmishes!
OGD bonded and 114 are great high rye low price bottles. Can’t go wrong
114 stands out to my pallet.
Picked up that early times the other day for the first time and was super impressed for 24 bucks. Can't find it much in North Carolina where I'm at but live near the border to South Carolina and can find it on shelf.
You’re the man Matt. I watch every whiskey tuber you know or can think of but you’re on a different level my friend. Enjoy the natural comedic approach. Plus our pallets are similar. Your word is truth to me bud. Cheers! 🥃
My favorite bourbon is Early Times! My second is WT101. I haven't tried OGDBonded, but I do enjoy OGD114. Great video, Matt! Thanks!
On the mark!! Well said! Whiskey and whisdom!! Nice! Cheers.
I never wanted to be a wild turkey guy but it's my #1! Also...never tried early times. Appreciate you!
Love 101. Havent' had any of these others. Need to try. Thanks matt
If 'he never screwed up' it's because he never did anything. If you do stuff, you will occasionally screw up.
It's bottles like these that allow me to refuse to pay high prices for allocated bourbons. I will occasionally spend $50-60 for a bottle but it is rare and never more than that. Why spend that much when there are bottles like these that are very enjoyable? There are so many outstanding bourbons and ryes in the under $40 price range that I don't have to stretch my budget for anything other than the occasional treat bottle. The only bottle that I can think of that you could have added would be Coopers Craft 100. I think it might be the winner of that group.
Matt, I was super worried you were gonna tip that wheel and drop all the whiskey! 😂 Thanks for keepin it real brother and I guess you coulda been a top tier waiter with those balancing skillz. Glad you became a Whiskey Tuber instead! Lol
When Matt mixes the glasses it's always easy to keep track of each glass HOWEVER when he says that he's confused and doesn't know which is which... I believe him. His name is Matt.
Woo hoo, can't wait to try Barrel King Batch MP77
Love the video Matt, do you think during the editing process next time you could do an overlay of the bottle you are sampling so we can follow along with the notes and opinions while your sampling it?
I always have a handle of 1783 good for warm up drink or simple mixer wth coke.
If you are looking for "the best," whether it sticks out or not doesn't matter. If The Benchmark Full Proof is better, it should be in there.
right but it kinda messes up the blind because you know what it is, and whatever biases you have will surface
I like the Full Proof, sometimes it gives me heartburn, but not every time. It's like every time I open the bottle, it's almost a different taste.
Why no Evan Williams BIB? I love it 😊
You got your intro on point. Very smooth.
ET is a tremendous value. I might have to give OGD a run now... cheers!
ET BiB, OGD BiB and WT101 are all so solid as inexpensive drinkers. Just goes to show you that even at the lower end of the bourbon market there are some really good options around.
OGD 114 > BiB @$20…
Glass four’s spelling bee meta joke had me rolling.
Jack bib, 1792 small batch & Evan Williams bib might be good contenders.
“Strikes and gutters, ups and downs.” Whether it was the intention or not I love a Big Lebowski reference, The Dude abides 😁
The best budget bourbon is Elijah Craig in the 1.75l bottle at $54 or even $60 (That is equivalent to a $23 or $25 respectively for a 750ml bottle). These 1.75L bottle are a steal but obviously not every bourbon will come in that size. I haven't seen anyone do it yet, but a review of the best 1.75l bottles would be awesome. Cheers!
I did a 'bottom shelf' tasting a few years ago and didn't like any of them. I had an OGD, ET with plastic cap, WT 101, Evan Williams BiB and something else I don't remember. For just a few bucks more I can get bourbons I really like...Benchmark Full Proof, Coopers Craft, Buffalo Trace, etc.
I've never had JTS Brown, but I've heard great things about it. Ancient Ancient Age 10 star is another hitter. It stacked up well in my blind against Buffalo Trace.
I have a bottle of AAA10* that I'm honestly having trouble choking down. Tons of nail polish ethanol on the nose, plus it's *super* nutty, which is really odd for a BT product, and has a funky, off-putting finish to boot. At least it only cost me $13.99! Would love to find an AA90 to compare it against, to see if those two bottles are the same product just with different labels for different markets, or not (I can't find a single review that addresses this!!). On the other hand, so far I've only had the Bonded from the Benchmark series, but I rather quite enjoyed it...had no problems polishing off that bottle. So its last place finish here surprised me.
Benchmark single barrel is my favorite from the benchmark line.
Two more: Old Forester 100, a familiar bourbon for many, but so good and $23.99 where I live. Also Fighting Cock from Heaven Hill. An excellent sub-$20 bourbon at 103 proof, aged 6 years.
Totally agree 💯 these are both excellent value picks for the price!
Early Times, I 'm seeing it getting high ratings in multiple tastings.
Could you try s tasting with Ancient Age
Love the ET. I’m a big EW fan as well and although my daily is EW BiB, if I can’t get it I’ll pick up 1783. It’s super solid. I’ve tried multiple WT products and I just don’t care for it.
Not surprised at the outcome of this blind at all. Early Times BIB is a banger that hits far above its price point.
Had no idea you were a bowler....how do you like the Hazmat? do you stick with Hammer stuff?
Except for the fact you can't buy the Early Times with the black plastic screwtop. Hell you couldn't even buy that one in 2023!!!
Nice! I’m not really sipping these neat much anymore. I prefer a bit more proof these days! I did see the Early Times metal cap at Sam’s last week for 17.99 per bottle next to Sazarac Rye 19.99 and Buffalo Trace 22.99 no limit they also had Old Forester 1920 for 44.99!!
Not surprised that Early Times won. And it's a LITER bottle so it's a win win. While I mostly use these bottles as mixers, I have had ET BiB neat and didn't mind a bit.
PS, you should have used Evan Williams BiB, certain it would have placed higher.
Where do you get these bottles? I live in westchester, NY and never see these.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single Early Times here in Delaware, odd huh
One of my favorite budget drinkers is Alibi. For $16.00 to $18.00 it delivers
Cool Video Matt, like your picks but.....there are literally no black caps left out there so the winner was basically an unavailable bourbon.
JTS Brown BiB is one that would do well in this blind. Under $20
I think WT101 is the only one on the list I can get. I think Old Forester 100 should have been with these.
I did not like the Kirkland brand. But every other one you mentioned, I think is good for what it is, a budget bourbon. And I think that OGD and WT101 are good on their own merits.
Nailed it
yes, it was worth the time, ty matt.....i have not achieved the snobbery required to turn my nose up at affordable whiskeys; yet
ETBIB was my favorite daily driver until OGD 114 entered the picture. I can get OGD for 20 in my area. Can't go wrong with either.
Solid Aloha brother I like it
I see Old Tub as lightweight Bookers
Always keep early times and ogd bib on the bar..
ET BiB is FINALLY available here in Tampa. $13-15 for a LITER! Its my go-to now. WT101 now has an awful cinnamon note in it. So bad now
JTS Brown and Evan Williams BinB definitely should have been on the list.
You got a Brown-Forman bottle. Those BT bottles don’t quite hit as hard.
Sorry, not BT, Sazarac
I drink these all the time I don’t chase allocated bottles I’m ok with the inexpensive stuff.
Early Times great value
OGD114 is better than OGD BiB. WT 101 is better than blue top Early Times. What is Matt's preference? Great question
How about a blind comparing Fireball against Jack Daniels Tenn. Fire, Jim Beam Kent. Fire, Evan Williams Fire, Cinerator, and Rope A Dope Cinnamon Whiskey? Then maybe do the peanut butter ones too.😂
I have a genuine question for everyone out there, and I hope I convey the utmost respect I intend. If I were to tell you I don't really like whiskey, what is it about whiskey that I'm failing to appreciate? For me I experience the alcohol burn of cheaper whiskey, and a sort of rotten fruit, weird BO kind of flavour. Am I sipping it wrong or serving it wrong, or am I just hardwired to not like it? I've even tasted some slightly more expensive whiskeys, but nothing about the taste makes me go, "yum". Just to hammer the point home, I am NOT making a blanket statement about whiskey. I'm simply describing my personal experience and I genuinely want to like it!
A good ol bourbon Skirmish
Perfect video
I like them all.
ETBiB wins that flight for me as well....maybe Old Forester next go round
Very Old Barton 100 proof is a banger for under $20
Is that the 2023 or 2024 EWSB heros edition?
Black top Early Times is GOATED! No question, it’s the best of the group. I have done blinds of it against other 100 proofs and it beat the other Brown Forman 100 proofs (except 1924 which I haven’t had). It beats a lot of $50 bottles for me personally. RIP to a real one.
OGD got this in the bag. Not sure about bonded tho.
Bargain base Bourbon. "nice for the price" Love it Matt.
If I could only pick 2 bottles on a budget (that I can easily get), Old Forester 100 and Wild Turkey 101 would be it. And I really wouldn't even be that sad.
Yeah...some blinds I can taste along with and benefit from Matt MF Porter's pallet!
Would love to see OF 100 in this some day
That looks like a Brown Forman ET top...
I think the Evan Williams Bottled in Bond would have done better than the 1783
Im amazed that OGD BiB finished so high. Matt basically hated on it in an earlier video.
Apparently it ages well, I was told to open the bottle, pour a glencairn mostly full, heave it out the window, hide the corked open bottle at the back of the cabinet and revisit in 4 months.
Try Tin cup
1. That Early Times is not $25 in any market I know of.
2. The B.F. black screw top bottles are long out of production.
It's 26.45 for 1L in my control state, which isn't suuuuuuper far off...though availability is admittedly a problem. It also appears to be 22.95 in a neighboring state, and with much better stock to boot...
Up $1 last year to 22.99 in SC and always on the shelf. I buy 4 at a time and have considered buying by the case at 10% discount.
No EW bib?
OGD 114 @$29 is best value in market
Everybody will have their own opinion on this, but leaving Evan Williams BiB White Label is a tough omission. Pretty sturdy offering for $18 or so...
Oily balls suck. You’ve got to have the right traction. I was pulling for the Early Times. I’ve got an unopened blue screw cap. I hope it rates the same. 🥃
Nice, OF100 coulda been a contenda : )
WT 101 or Larceny for me. I've never seen Early Times BiB out here T_T
If WT101 isn't in first, then you're wrong.
