The best thing about your channel is your maturity. That’s not a euphemism for “old”, I’m 48. You are comfortable in your own skin and you know who you are, so your opinions are genuinely your own. I feel like now that video games as a lifestyle are sort of en vogue, you get a lot of content creators parroting what they perceive to be “right thinking” on various games and franchises. Your channel is the straight dope, at least as you see it, and I appreciate it.

I'm currently playing through Breath of the Wild for the first time and it's very much a love/hate experience. I have to play with a guide open because I hate puzzles, don't have the patience for them, and it's like everything's a friggin' puzzle in this game. And I hate how equipment is constantly breaking. And I hate how it rains every time I want to climb a mountain. But there's lots to love about it, too, and so I will see it through to the end.

Borderlands, was my realization that I can’t stand shoot n loot games.
Langrisser 1&2, was my realization that I don’t have the patience for strategy games.
I see your reasoning for each game on your list and I found your points interesting especially about Pokémon Sword & Shield lol Ash Ketchum goes to Britain in Pokémon Scotland & Wales.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 4 месяца назад

Eh, you probably don't like looters shooters or strategy games, BUT as someone who REGULARLY eats my words on games because I'm too quick to judge because I've played way too many games for way too long, don't dismiss entire genres over two games.
There are a lot of different styles of both of those genres. There's a slim chance that you find a gem amongst them.
Borderlands isn't bad, but Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is superior in my opinion. The game just flows better and has some real improvements to the formula that just lets it flow better.
As for Langrisser, that is an OLD game; like early 90s old. No shiny coat of paint or small QoL improvements will change that. The game is a product of its time. Even for me, as someone who played the American version Warsong as a teenager, it's dated. It was revolutionary for its time, but it definitely shows its age. Even more so than with Borderlands, definitely don't dismiss strategy games because of Langrisser.

I really enjoy the Trails series, I'm currently playing through the 8th game in it for me. I think that if you didn't enjoy Cold Steel I, the others may not be for you either. It's true that that one is probably one of the slower entries but even in the more faster paced ones, in my opinion what's best about those games is the attention to detail and how every NPC dialogue and side quest is always intriguing to me. That's why I think that if that type of storytelling wasn't enjoyable for you in Cold Steel I, it probably won't be in the other entries either. CS2 has pretty different setting from the first game but to me the pacing is still largely very slow, even a lot slower than in the first game if you play like me and talk to all the NPCs and do all optional content at least. If you still feel like giving another shot to the Trails series I think maybe Trails from Zero is the easiest to get into of the first-in-the-arc games although Trails in the Sky FC is the most charming one to me personally!

I don't really HATE any game. Obviously I like some more than others, and there are entire genres that I don't care for, but if a game isn't for me, that's fine.
One series that does consistently frustrate me, because I WANT to love it, is SaGa.
Between the random growth of the Spark system, and the way it actively punishes you for grinding, I always get soft-locked; have never finished a SaGa style game, despite first being exposed to them around 1998, and trying several of them.

I feel the same about Legends Arceus, and modern Pokemon games in general. The gen 7 games were the last ones I actually enjoyed, and now that you mention it, the unique region it was set in definitely played a role. And strangely I find myself missing random encounters. Having all the Pokemon visibly roam the world killed the element of surprise that I never even realized was there until it was gone. I guess the games just aren't for me anymore.

Bravely Default on the 3DS, it’s one of the best looking games on the 3DS with great music and a decent story but the difficulty spike is so vast towards the end that the game was becoming unplayable for me, dropping the difficulty to easy had little to no effect, i had to look up guides online which I hate doing, I just wanted it to be over and I hate that I hate this game but I was just so unnecessary and has made me doubt if I will ever play another entry in the series 😞🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I can kinda get the difficulty but what made me kinda avoid the game is that I knew that after a certain point on the story the events repeat themselves over and over and I think it added with the difficulty is kinda aggravating. It is similar to Metal Gear V Phantom Pain in this regard. The first half of the game is awesome, but since it was clearly rushed after some point in development and they needed the game to be longer, they demand you to repeat the same missions again in a different difficulty setting to advance. If the difficulty switch was OPTIONAL, I would like it more and even be tempted to try but it is REQUIRED. I love Bayonetta and I can accept it fine that it lasts about 15 hours on the difficulty setting you choose and since I improved at the game and loved it, I play again on other difficulty settings and have a blast as well, if the game was forcing me to play on Normal and play the same events again on Hard and Infinite Climax to progress I would loathe it.

About Trails of Cold Steel part 1: I've completed the game once on the PS3, and I just loved all the character development going on, the lore (history and technology of that world), etc. -- Part 2 continues where the first part ended and introduces several new things. I had only begun playing it for several hours on the PS3 (I can't remember why I stopped playing it). -- Now, on the PS4 (after finding out that it wasn't possible to import the save games from the PS3 which weren't on the server anymore anyway for some reason), I began replaying Part 1 on the PS4. But now, the game struck me as boring too. I guess it's because I had played so many games in the meantime, and Part 1 just looks very dated nowadays. On the PS3, I did enjoy every single battle, but on the PS4, I just wished for an autobattle function so I could automate the grinding (I guess I played too many Tales of games and Disgaea 6 :D ). Perhaps it's because I don't have as much spare time as I used to, and playing these kinds of games takes up a lot of time. Recently, I continued playing Tales of Berseria, which had sporadical save games over a span of 7 years. But now I'm hooked for some reason, and yes, I'm using autobattle so I can enjoy the story and take in the sceneries. Playing Tales of Graces f back in the day in manual/half-automatic mode most of the time wrecked my PS3 controller so I had to get a new one. :D I don't want that to happen on the PS4. :D -- I wish I could have the time and muse to finish all of the 4 parts of Trails of Cold Steel, since I still think it's pretty awesome and I want to see all the things taking place in the story, like in politics, society and technology, and also the personal development of the characters.

I couldn't even finish it. Easily one of the most overrated Pokémon games, and I genuinely don't understand what people see in it.
That being said, almost every Pokémon game released on Switch was unfortunately pretty terrible. The only good ones were PMD: Rescue Team DX and New Pokémon Snap, and those are spin-offs. Lol, those are the two Pokémon games on Switch that legitimately had any form of love put into them.

Zelda is one of my favorite franchise ever but I couldn't get into BotW. I forced myself to clear 2 of the divine beasts, enough shrines to get the Master Sword and beat the final boss but after that I was done. Thankfully TotK fixed a lot of the issues I had with it and I enjoyed it much more.
Two other games I hate are Tales of Xillia 2 and Tales of Zesteria. The Tales series used to be arguably my favorite game series ever. I was an obsessed with it. I was super excited for Xillia 2 after getting the platinum trophy for the first one, I even got the collector's edition but once I got to that weird debt system that gated your progress I quickly lost interest.
I decided to wait for the next one, which was Tales of Zestiria and I hated almost everything about it. They made some strange decisions with the story, the combat had a ton of camera issues and the equipment and skill system felt super confusing to me.
Thankfully the Zestiria anime and Tales of Berseria were better (and I hear Arise is great too) but I sadly can't get into the series as much as I used to.

My personal lowest score I've given a game that people love is Metroid Prime Remastered. I absolutely loved the beginning of the game, but the longer it went on I started to despise it. No sort of mission log, confusing map, no real narrative of any kind, insane amounts of backtracking and just waiting to trigger something to progress. I *hated* the game, and un-hyperbolically gave it a 1.5/10. Combat felt incredibly repetitive, the visors were annoying to use, and scanning things all the way just felt like wasted time. I remember liking Prime 3 on the Wii when that came out, so I'm not sure what has changed for me since then.

The events in the two Crossbell games (Zero and Azure) and the first two Cold Steel games happen at the same time and knowing what is happening in Crossbell definitely enhanced the experience when playing Cold Steel 1 & 2. And playing the Sky arc enhances the experience of playing Azure.

For Cold steel 2, it's more fast paced for the story events, you moove a lot from an airship so it feels less tedious and less slow.
But everything you hate in cold steel 1 is there in 2 and so on.

If you didn't like Trails of Cold Steel, you won't like II-IV as they are basically the exact same gameplay with some streamlining in the fighting but certainly not in the overall methods. Like they drag on forever. It's definitely more of the same. You may like Zero and Azure since they are a bit more old school and though they are long,, they are not as drawn out as the Cold Steel games.

While I didn't hate Torna, I will admit that the whole community thing did suck a LOT of the goodwill I felt for it completely out of the experience.
So, the thing about Trails - basically EVERY arc of the story is set up the same way, where the first game is ALL world- and character-building. There is not a strong plot present until the very end, which is just to set up the next game in the arc. For that reason, I tend to think of each arc as "a game" in and of itself -- just a really long game. Personally, I'm a fan of the style of getting the character development and relationship building done ahead of the big plot, but that style is definitely not going to be for everyone. So I think a lot of the things you disliked about Cold Steel 1 are going to be present throughout a decent chunk of the series. So while you might like Trails of Cold Steel 2 more than 1 (because that's where the plot really kicks in), it's probably not a series that you're going to have fun investing in.

Bold move to say the least but yeah not everyone likes the same things and that's fine. Like at the moment I'm struggling to get through Persona 5 Royal and 4 Golden, the games aren't bad by any means but the pacing is doing my head in. I'm willing to give them one more go, and for those wondering I've played 80hrs of P5 and 30hrs of P4. Now I consider myself a reasonable person and though I might not like a game I'm willing to give it credit on it's good points; only one game I've played has had me seething. Agarest: Generations of War Zero is a mess: Grindy, One Note charicters, drawn out fights, HP sponge's, difficulty spikes a plenty, half baked dating sim elements and story cutscenes locked by a beating bosses under an unseen time limit. This game almost made me never pick up JRPG's again.

As you mention, the pacing is NOT good. Spending a couple of hours in a beautifully constructed dungeon is amazing. Then you get hit or miss boss fights. Then you have to deal with 30 minutes of school drama. I mean, there were times where I may as well have been watching a show. Not a fan of that. Great game otherwise.

So, if ever made a list like this, it would probably include games that I did not finish. I did not like my time with Octopath Traveler (OT). A much younger version of me was able to put up with random battles, fixed save points, and mindless grinding. Today, I do not want those things in my games, and I really tried to like OT. I even gave it 20 hrs, which broke my 10 hr rule to get my attention. As for Trails of Cold Steel I, in my opinion, it is one of the weaker titles of the series with that really slow burn. CSII and CS III pick up the pace quite a bit.

Glad I’m not alone in my discontent for Pokémon games, I don’t understand how millions of people still find them fun. I’ve played every Switch title except Scarlet/Violet because I thought, “maybe this one will do it” but no, every time the novelty wore off quickly and I found myself bored beyond words when playing. I’m leaving the Pokémon series behind unless they can find a way to revolutionize their formula… which they haven’t done since the Gameboy days. I suppose to each their own, but it does frustrate me how massive this IP is in gaming when so many better series exist and they could only dream of reaching the sales numbers of a new Pokémon game. I would throw the Pokémon company in with Ubisoft and Activision as an indication of what’s wrong with the industry. They can do better and we know it.

I totally agree that the first ToCS is a boring slog, which happens to be quite uninteresting if you're not into "life of the high schooler in a fantasy world" :-) However, it improves a lot towards the end and gets even better in the second game, when the conflict and the game/story goals are clearly defined. I would even say that the game is at its peak in the third game. Although it is quite unfortunate that the game consists of four parts which every one takes at least 50 hours to finish :-( P.S.: Yeah, and it is also recommended not to play ToCS3 before finishing Zero/Azure duology, which doesn't help either. P.P.S.: There is also "epilogue" game: Trails into Reverie. I admit the whole series is one big mess and I am not surprised people are reluctant to hop on.

And it’s all just walking around to new towns and helping out there and meeting new people and seeing a little more of the world (until it very much isn’t).

fun video! my issue with cold steel (as a new-ish fan) is that the formula is too rigid. no reason you shouldn't be able to revisit/fast travel to old locations and dungeons, grind, do side quests when you want, but developers def chose story progress dictating everything. with all games, some nights i want to progress story and some nights i want to grind/explore and watch tv. cold steel forces one or the other depending on story progress, and its not easy to power through 4-6hrs of reading just to get to battling. great series, and the story highs and twists hit hard, just definitely a commitment to get there. and im in my 40s so im no stranger to how games used to be, but i def appreciate the newer qol changes that give more player choice
