    Mike has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old, and from that first moment his love affair with music and the instrument began. Fresh out of school at the age of 16 he attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and completed a year-long Diploma course.
    After finishing the ACM his life as a full time musician began, playing in numerous bands and touring up and down the country playing iconic venues such asThe Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, The Underworld and London’s Jazz Café. He’s also been fortunate enough to support industry legends Paul Weller, Blondie and Katie Melua.
    Mike’s session work has led to his working on a variety of projects - from performing with stars such as Ricky Wilson and Diana Vickers, to appearing in many TV shows and adverts. Mike loves being on stage performing, but is equally at home recording in a studio - where he has worked with Alex Von Soos (All Saints, Seal, Atomic Kitten), Mike Horner (The Prodigy, Shakira, Bloc Party), and Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro)

      Hi Mike, Terrific flanger sound. I like your Style and humour, but
      IMO it’s just a simple sarcastic joke someone came up with. Non sense really, but funny if taken to the extreme by some “ALWAYS in minor Mode” guitar heroes on steroids.

      I believe it originated from Tim Henson of Polyphia if I'm not mistaken. He meant no offense by it.. it's just a thing they call when you play pentatonic/blues scale then bend it if I recall correctly.. It got a lot of heat until he was interviewed by his good friend Rick Beato (who's a baby boomer btw)

    The greatest boomer bender of all time, Jimi, was a relentless innovator who reimagined the possibilities of the guitar using new technologies like fuzz, octaver, wah, etc. If he were alive today, I think he would totally dig innovators like Polyphia. They are not playing 'like' Hendrix, but they are playing far more in the same spirit as Hendrix than people who do try to play like him 50 years later (I am 60 btw)

    If someone is putting any guitarist down because of your bends it's either because of bad bends, or they are are lowly cynics who catch on the latest lingo. Guthrie Govan does an incredible youtube lesson on the art of bending. I don't think anyone is going to openly criticize that guy. ...You hit the nail on the head. Why play electric guitar if you are not going to bend. It's like riding a mountain bike and not doing wheelies. Hell I've seen incredible classical guitarists who bend. It's called flavor. Music is sound. Sound is not rigid. I don't think Tim Henson meant it in a bad way but the insecure ones caught on this and made it a thing. When I was young, I played guitar. It was an action thing. Now I'm older and I play music. Same thing except for there are no boundaries.

      Truth is he said 2 words and 90% of people didn't even need to research what the new term meant. It was literally no different to referring to classical music as such. I don't need to look up what years determine if music is classical. I don't need to Google what instruments are in classical music. I hear classical and automatically know what it refers to. It isn't dissing Mozart by adding a label that defines the damn music.

    Tim Henson from Polyphia first said it on Rick Beato’s channel. He mentioned in one of the videos he was talking about an excessive, repetitive type of bend which made me think of 70’s classic rock bends more so than blues bends. Yeah I think the term took on a life of its own after the video and it’s kinda derogatory, but Tim mentioned he does bend too.

    As people have correctly stated it comes from a Rick Beato video with Tim Henson. I think it has become a popular internet meme because of how ridiculous the statement is. The fact that it was written in large letters on the thumbnail of a Rick Beato video (a content creator who is often mocked on Reddit guitar forums) helped it gain traction. To be fair I'm confident Rick himself highlighted it because he thought it was an amusing off the cuff statement. I don't think Rick or Tim ever meant it to be taken seriously.

    Totally with you Mike!! The worst thing an up and coming artist can do is criticise a technique that is used as a form of expression to play an instrument. Shows very little understanding both musically, historically and as a person. If players hadn't started bending the third string back in the 50's then Rock n Roll may not quite be what we think of it now, let alone all the guitar genres that have spun off it! I'm all for someone to having an original approach to playing an instrument, but to take the piss out of those that have come before to which you now are on the musical shoulders of, lacks serious maturity.

    I dont know man. I think we guitar players are overly sensitive sometimes. I dont think it was initially meant as a put down, but like all things its morphed into something else. if we're being honest, this is nothing new. Its this era's version of Be bop vs Swing jazz. Dizzy and Charlie Parker disregarded what came before them and peple like Louis Armstrong took it very personally. In a way I kind of like this discussion because it sort of makes us take a look at different muscial approaches. Guitar playing has gotten less creative over the years with every player trying theyre best to sound exactly like the heros they grew up idolizing. While it sounds good, its not exactly pushing the instrument forward. I personally am a self admitted bend - o- holic. Im nver not going to do it because some kid said its not cool. That said, Ive listened to what some of these new players have made and thought it was pretty cool. Made me rethink a few things. for instance, how can I make this tele sing and sound interesting without bending a single string? After about a week of no bending I found it opended up my playing a lot because I wasnt relying on old cliche's.. so when I reincorporated the bending, it sounded amazing

    • @edwardjons8684
      @edwardjons8684 2 года назад +2

      I agree completely. i made the same point about bebop on Beato’s channel - before that, every sax player was using a heavy vibrato on long held notes and lots of scoopy/bend like phrasing (like the clarinet sound in Rhapsody in Blue). The boomer bend is our equivalent of that vibrato and scoopy sax bend.

    • @BigBobbyBoLo

    Boomer bends are simpler. Half step/full step blues pentatonic licks and such. They’re amazing and we wouldn’t be here without them. But listen to Empty Hands by Mateus Asiago for instance. 2:13 into the video, in his solo here he’s hitting you with insane bending techniques that are just beyond anything we’ve had. The mechanics and technical skills that it takes.. when implemented right can take even blues and such to another level. Tim Henson and Mateus Asato are re-inspiring guys like me to pick up the 6 string again. Because like EVH they’ve shown us that there’s more to do, more sounds to create. It’s a generational slang and us millennials’ kids will have slang for us too. Lighten up y’all & keep jammin’

      Foreals. Tim used this phrase as a joke but he’s not wrong. Guitar players are getting too comfortable playing the same old bluesy classic rock licks that it is getting so boring listening to the same pentatonic licks over and over. I’m 27, played guitar all my life from 10 years old and stopped playing when I went to college, I got really good but I kind of got bored playing the same stuff. Graduate college and heard the song “Goat” from polyphia (Tim hensons band), ironically, and my mouth dropped. I’ve never heard guitar played how Tim and Scott played. It changed my whole perspective on the guitar that there is so much more to be explored and to push the boundaries of music and creativity. from that moment I bought new guitars and started playing again… fully inspired. That was in 2017/2018. I’m still playing now, making my own music that makes me super happy blending my old way of playing and what Tim and Mateus have brought to us guitar players. Mateus is another whole story that I won’t get into lol. But ya, dudes like Tim and Mateus and others are brining so many young kids and teens into playing the guitar. And for the ones close to their thirties like me, it may be inspiring us to pick the guitar up again and feel revolutionized.
      Don’t get me wrong I love boomer bending it’s part of my foundational play style but I’m not hating or ranting lol. I’m simply trying different things, maybe trying to bending oddly or differently to sound more unique.

      @@dominickortega8489 the problem isn't the bend itself, it's that the word "boomer" is derogatory in a modern sense.
      "Boomer" is commonly used to dismiss those who have dated political and sociological views.
      People could easily refer to those bends as "blues bends".

    • @dominickortega8489
      @dominickortega8489 Год назад

      @@jkcrawl it is derogatory. That’s the point. If “blues” bend was used then we wouldn’t be having this discussion. At the end of the day it’s a joke. Sure people who are boomers would probably get offended but it’s really targeting those who play the same stuff (or bends) all the time. So yes, it’s derogatory towards boomers but it’s a joke to get his point across.

    • @jkcrawl
      @jkcrawl Год назад

      @@dominickortega8489 that's not his explanation for why he coined the term.
      He's specifically said that he wasn't trying to offend anyone but couldn't come up with any other way to describe the sound.
      It's a weird thing to be derogatory about. The blues is simply a style of music, it's like shitting on bands for sweep picking or writing breakdowns.

    • @dominickortega8489
      @dominickortega8489 Год назад

      @@jkcrawl he says he didn’t mean to offend anyone but let’s be honest, he thinks it’s overdone and probably annoying to hear and wanted to break out of the stereotype of whats associated with the electric guitar. If you have listened to polyphia’s older albums, him and Scott do a lot of “boomer” bends. If you listen to their following albums from after muse like starting with renaissance and on, they reduce and or stop doing bluesy bends. You can say he took his future comment as a means to evolve and sound different. It went in their favor and now they’re more successful in their careers.
      Like you said why didn’t he use bluesy bends? He thinks it’s cringe and overrated. Speculative? Yes but what other explanation is thereto use such an “offensive” word to describe a style of music?
      I don’t think it’s weird. I think It’s a bit classless of him but imo it’s weirder to get offended by it. His comment doesn’t stop anyone who’s offended by it to stop enjoy that style of music or from doing bluesy bends. It’s up to them to just ignore/laugh it off and continue to do what they want. Like I’ve mentioned in my first comment to the OP, i like blues, I do “boomer” bends all the time. It’s fundamentally part of my style and playing and I don’t think I’ll ever stop but it does get boring and old and I believe it’s good to broaden your musical horizons.
      Regarding your last part juxtaposing Tim’s comment, people do that all the time. That is literally so common to every genre/style of music that people do to what they don’t like or enjoy.

    I’m one of those rare people that thinks the term “boomer bend” is entirely apt. I think it just identifies generally players and music fans who think music ceased to evolve in the late 70s and always point to Led Zep, Clapton, blues rock generally and even elements of hard rock such as EVH. The boomer bend is the archetypal guitar move for these players and to my mind is used excessively - it’s a ubiquitous cliche in rock. Henson backed off from this a little but I dont doubt it’s what he meant.
    I’m 50, not technically a boomer, but grew up playing blues guitar, I think the term suits the style I learned and it’s something I do strive to get away from in my playing because it has become so cliched.
