I've never liked the term Boomer Bends, but seeing as it's now in use by a small fraternity of the guitar community...I thought I'd point out that the younger generations have built their techniques on the so called 'boomer bends' and it's great to see how they've added to the repertoire of techniques!

I'm neither a boomer nor a millennial, but I feel the same way.
I've been doing slide bends long ago and didn't know they are now "Millennial" bends. Mostly on acoustic guitar and 12 string in particular which is difficult to bend so I would slide with a slight bend to mimic a full bend.
I've played for over 40 years, and don't see anything new, just glad young people still are interested in playing
The only person I ever see doing that sliding thing very much is Chris Buck.
And Helen Ibe and sometimes Michael Lemmo on Norm’s Rare Guitars’ Guitar of the Day. And yes, the first I heard doing them years ago was Derek Trucks but it seemed so fresh and different then; sort of like hearing Stevie Ray Vaughan for the first time!! And that’s saying a lot!! 🤣😂

Great examples of the difference between the two. Millennial bends always strike me as a sort of "playing slide without a slide" style.

Assuming that this became a bit of a thing in the guitar world with Tim Henson kind of bringing the concept to the public's eye - he himself admits that had he not learned Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath songs (i.e. songs with boomer bends) that he would probably not have the foundation to transition and play death metal.

If you watch Polyphia's Chimera guitar play through, you'll notice Tim Henson doesn't bend upwards, doesn't push the string towards the top of the neck. He pulls downwards, toward the bottom of the neck. I'd assumed the Boomer Bend was upwards and the Millennial Bend was downwards.
Good point I forget to address that point, although some boomers such as SRV would bend the g string down
Scoot does bend it upwards most of the song ( correct me if i am wrong)
The second slide thing sorta Sounds like quickly arpeggiating and embellishing the D shape of any chord in a (what Guthrie trapp calls Major 7) kind of way, like a mix of arpeggio and scale sorta.. whatever it is, I love it. It’s very pleasant to the 👂

I don't mock anyone. I grew up in a time when almost every guitarist, myself included, sounded different. Nobody is taking ANYTHING a step further. What's happening iss that we're getting guitarists who ALL SOUND EXACTLY ALIKE, but that is bad. There were guitarists in the past who that played even before I was born who could put anyone to shame so I'm not getting the whole boomer/millennial thing! The goal of music is to sound uniquely different!

Millennial here. I bend it, but I never add the extra half step. I like to preload the bend, then strike the note and release, for the down-bend effect. 7-1 is a good bend but the best bend is between 2 and 3 in the major, and 4 and 5 in the minor. It's the same bend, same flat 5/minor 3rd. That's the best one. Have at it!

A very clarifying video. Thank you! In all art forms there are periods which denounce or depart from the orthodoxies of the period before. Someone develops a technique which becomes popular, then perhaps over-used and then resisted. A new technique emerges which then goes through the same process. Nearly always the ‘origin’ of something means the last well-known or influential person who did it. (Several people have pointed out that Jeff Beck’s playing contains several different forms of bending but usually in a context that’s hard to imitate). Once a term like BB gets popularised it generates its own heat as we all try to find a perspective on it that feels right. Those who think that expression, rather than virtuosity, is paramount will I think tend to use whatever they find most expressive. It’s notable that in other arts when a thing is done so much that you’re distractingly aware of it, it gets called mannerism and some will try to avoid it. This could apply to both forms of bending (or any other aspect of guitar technique) couldn’t it?

Lol, I don’t get this boomer bend thing. I definitely do the slide bend thing more often than not… not even sure why because i never practiced it tbh, it just sorta happened. But i do those boomer bends sometimes too because, oh I dunno? It’s a sound that the guitar makes?! Plus I play blues occasionally? I mean, Tim Henson said that and he doesn’t play blues at all so why would he bend like that? I find to be completely a stylistic thing and usually a genre defines a style. Boomers love blues though lol. Who cares, it all sounds cool.

Hey partner. Nice video but I have to diverge - Jeff Beck and others were doing combinations of bend / hammer-on /slide years before the millennials came along. Also any Indian raga player, including crossover guy Harry Manx (excellent). Even i have been doing them for 25 years 😬. Maybe there are just more people doing them now, or more RUclips videos on how to do them?

I'm 18 but I do boomer bends don't know how to do it any other way but it comes from me making a bow and using that as an instrument prior to getting a good guitar

Look, this whole discussion is completely bonkers. It started with a joke by a Tim Henson in an interview by Rick Beato. It was all tongue in cheek, and now suddenly people are making it into a huge issue. There is no such things as a boomer or a millennial bend. This is just another stupid way to create pointless division between different generations of guitar players. Sometimes I really hate the guitar community.

I play alot of rock on acoustic guitar, and ive been using finger slides in that fashion for years, but i bend alot too.....when i first heard the expression boomer bends awhile ago ,ill admit i chuckled.....
I must say tho , i was a little offended too...i think i heard the periphery guitarist say it. Not a big fan lol.

Chris Buck is amazing for the millienial bends, although I'm not gonna call it that by name again lol.
He is very Slash influenced, yet he’s gotten better and better over the years, and he hybrid picking, going between fingers to pick, with the slides into bends, really becoming his signature thing.
He very much plays what this video describes as boomer bends, and more.
I think those labels were a little funny, for about a month, but it’s a pretty absurd way to think about music.

This is a trick question, there are no millenial bends, they use the whammy
Gen X here to point out that one of those techniques does indeed "bend" the string, while the other is a simple slide. One can be done fast or slow, the other can only be done fast. One can hit tones between pitches and one can only hit one of the 12 pitches prescribed in western music. You can't put salt on everything, sometimes you need pepper, or both. Season to taste. Either way, boomer to Z, every generation has and does use both. Play on.
So what if your a millennial (not by choice, born in 83) who prefers boomer bends?
God help us when the Zoomers start bending. You'll need to make another video...

The biggest difference between boomer style playing and millennial playing is that the millennials skipped those pesky guitar lessons. Also, most boomers began with a cheap “starter guitar” and a crappy solid state amp, and millennials began with an expensive relic’d guitar and a professional tube amplifier. Millennials know how to start from the top
