There's always hope. I'm 66 & played in bars and night clubs in a couple rock bands when I was 15 in 1974, and served free drinks then. Still practice, mainly when I'm sober; had big chances in the past but alcohol took the coordination and creativity out of my brain and fingers. Message: Alcohol will get on your back and though you think you sound better drunk; just listen to recordings and chances are you'll find you play better sober.

Something about George Benson that just oozes class. It's there when he speaks, it's there when he plays and it's evident when he's just listening, you know he appreciates life and is just as at home in the audience as he is on a stage. Lots to learn from the man.

I have been playing guitar for two years but my father took me to see Mr. Benson at a local club. It was amazing! It was the band that included Earl Klugh on class with HR as well as gentlemen on the B3 Oregon. Whose name I can’t remember. But during the break I went up to George and paid my respects. And I was so tongue-tied and shy. And he looked at me and he said, now son do you play guitar? And I said well Mr. Bisson I thought I did, that is until I heard you play! He thought that was very very funny. He’s a very cool guy and he really inspired me. I came home that night and just wanted to play, play, play and I practiced real real hard. I ended up having a 50 year career in the music business. They will became famous or anything like that, but I did learn how to make a living. Thanks to you Mr. George blessed you are a true artist and the wonderful he would be

One of the greatest of all time - George Benson! Saw him perform with a young Earl Klugh as a guest with George's group at The Jazz Workshop in Boston, MA on Feb. 27, 1973. From six feet away at a front table. Fabulous as he smiled the whole time. To me one of George's abilities is the tie of his vocal skills with knowing how to phrase what he hears in his mind with intention.

I've been listening to him for 40 years. As far as I am concerned, he is articulating differential equations because it is way beyond my understanding. The other part is his manual dexterity. The ordinary human can't do it. It's like Randy Moss catching a football thrown out of bounds that he easily brings back into play after a one handed catch.... George Benson is beyond brilliant.

In addition to the valuable harmonic ideas in this lesson, it's inspiring to see how Benson's theoretical expertise and analytic thought process inform his approach to the instrument. Also, as a proven and singular master of phrasing, tone production, and speed, it's refreshing to enjoy Benson's bright, eager, and everyday personality. Imagine if you had a teacher whose playing could make you cry (and also make you wanna quit playing for a while, sigh), and who then patiently showed you his version of the neck and how you could meaningfully add it to your own.

It's so mind boggling to see George perform. To sing and play, with that pocket... I find it so intimidating that I get depressed! However... One of my happiest moments working at the Seattle Guitar Center was selling the beautiful Ibanez GB10 George Benson hollowbody on a rainy Tuesday night to an amazing local jazz guitarist. Great, great guitar. Worthy of the man it was made for.

A very tasteful player who plays for the song rather than over it; saw him play London's Royal Albert Hall a few years back - a great night and very enjoyable gig. Nice tutorial from a modern-day great guitarist. Thanks.

I love these videos, but benson is so intuitively brilliant that he can’t explain a damn about what he’s really doing. 🤷‍♂️🤣

I think a lot of the great guitar players don't fully understand their own learning process, and have even more difficulty laying it out as a recipe for others to follow. To analyze what you're doing and say it out loud, is not the same as teaching someone: "Do this for x years, and you'll be able to improvise effortlessly in a jazz context". I'm convinced he explains what he's doing in such an abstract way because he no longer empathizes with what his past self really needed to do to internalize that information in such as way that it comes out in improv. He hinted at it a little (I practiced 100 things and magicaly my ear developed and it just starting working)

Yeah he is not a great teacher. You see this in all fields: someone achieving mastery in their discipline but not very effective at teaching others. Which is fine, he gave us this great music to listen to and that's good enough : )

@@alexhoward1884 well said. I might also add (in my defense, not trying to critique Benson), that I think a lot of newer players who are trying to learn "self taught" wandering RUclips content, might come across a "virtuoso" player attempting to explain how they do what they do, it might be incredibly discouraging to the student.. thinking "well I guess I'm an idiot because that didn't help me at all"... in many cases it's not because the student is an idiot, its because good teachers are about as rare as virtuosos, and most people aren't both :)

What’s up brother. I met you about 20 years ago. You were playing at Molly Malone’s on Fairfax with Jorge Martin and Tony Newton was on bass. I came up to you after and told you how you had the Wah Wah Watson lick down so cold, you told me you used to play with Barry White so you had to. Glad to see you’re still kicking it and hope to run into you out here in the L.A. scene sometime soon.
