Agreed. Loved hearing him talk about Jim Hall. "The world doesn't know him as well as they should!" --there. Nuff said. Respect to you, sir! Mr. Benson giving respect to his predecessors and peers. A fascinating interview and I've grown even more fond of the artist.
george benson is a class act, I met him many years ago, he was a very gracious man, he let me play his guitar, while he played mine, but I was so intimidated my fingers got caught in the strings..Hes a great player
George Benson drops so much musical wisdom in his low key way, and always has practical advice if you're learning an instrument. The best teachers simplify the complex.
2:04 This is sooo true... Learning songs is the best way to learn Jazz, especially learning standards by ear. I wish I knew that before getting all the theory stuff.
Wow. GB comes off as a prince of a guy. His openness about his playing technique is refreshing and his enthusiasm for music just radiates through. The interviewer also does a fantastic job, asking all of the questions I would have asked and getting out of the way while George answers.
Nice to hear a qualified comment of respect on Elvis Presley's ability to deliver a ballad. "wise men say only fools rush in" Come on y'all. YOU can't TOUCH THAT. Hardly nobody can.
Love these interviews with George Benson - he’s such a likable and humble genius. His recording of The Shadow Of Your Smile would make Orpheus himself envious.
I share your words .....and it took me decades to captures the smile beyond the shadow as I was really submerged with emotion and fascination at my first listening and quite unable to cover the magicals notes and what looked a mysterious and out of reach increasing flow . IT still belongs as one of the greatest historic ( jazz ) guitar rendition . Sorry for my english expression . I'm French ....and do my best !!!!
What a treat to listen to these conversations. I was introduced to Mr. Benson's music in 1976 when the album Breezin' took the world by storm. Then in 1984 I had the privilege to see him perform in Long Island, NY in an amphitheater on the beach. To see "Affirmation" and all my other favorite tracks being played in front of me was such a gift. Unforgettable moment! Abundant blessings to one of the greatest musicians on planet earth...
These are fantastic I’m so glad these came up in my feed. I’ve been a George Benson fan for a long time but I don’t think I’ve ever heard him interviewed and never in depth like this.
love you Mr Benson, Amazing, simply the best, and I love how u learnt from all the best and took all the best and made it your own. So unique and special xxxx
I just watched an Interview with Peter Frampton who mentions each of the guitarist that George Benson talks about, as the men who influence his playing( including George Benson also).
Jawwdge! Thanks for some of the best music ever recorded. Your "Collaboration" with Earl Klugh, and Marcus Miller bassin' in the mix, is my all time favorite work of yours. One of the other highlights of some of my musical experiences, was seeing you live in 2008, and getting backstage access for a photo-op. Much happiness and continued good health my brother. God bless.🎸
If you haven't heard the songs he's referring to and playing here at the beginning they are "Honky Tonk" and "Hold It" by Bill Doggett. Check out Bill Doggett, good stuff.
Barney Kessel, Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell … damn … what a jamm club that was. Let’s appreciate that GB is just as great a singer as he is a gat master Triple threat = good guitarist, great voice, but his swagger is as invincible as his humility and kindness
This Gentleman is crazy good. Like a good orator, manners, some dedication to his craft up there with the best in the world. Unless that is, unless he stole your girlfriend, your opinion may differ than mine. Go GB 🎉
If anyone that know es George Benson lm trying to get in touch with him my name is Alonzo Traylor st from surprise Az please let me know thank you and God bless you 🙏
Great idea haven’t seen George in many many years I’m from New Jersey as well as him I’m in LA now will ask some cats-musicians) if I come across anyone I here he’s back played with some young rappers lately
@@elwoodwhite2499 Peter is his long time student/pupil/friend that wrote the book on George's playing 'method.' He is pretty active on youtube and not quite as famous as some of his other known collaborators and friends so maybe more accessible? Good luck!
Hi Alonzo: George Benson used to hang with a cat in Chicago named Henry Johnson. Henry is a bad dude, if you take my musical meaning. He's one of the foremost jazz guitarists in the world himself, and also a very accomplished singer, too. A local legend. Anyway, whenever GB comes to Chi-town, he usually checks in with Henry and they hang out. I think they stay in touch, too, since they are good friends. I took a lesson or two from Henry back in the day; great guy - very down to earth and friendly - which is how I know this stuff. Drop him a line on his FB page or his You Tube channel, and maybe he can steer you in the right direction. Benson, being an international star, probably has gatekeepers and helpers; you know - folks to help him with managing his career, and I'm sure he has a manager or some sort of representation to get him gigs and so forth. Not sure now that he is getting on in years and doesn't tour as much. That's another possible route. Anyway, hope that helps....
Maybe if you mention it to him. Along the lines of "George, singing the songs and playing the guitar is ok but but the that vocal virtuosity that demonstrates your fabulous ear and harmonic mastery is going to have to go because I don't like it". I'm sure George will stop it as soon as you let him know that it's not good enough.
Benson is a class act. Many a guitarist could learn just from his humility alone.
Agreed. Loved hearing him talk about Jim Hall. "The world doesn't know him as well as they should!" --there. Nuff said. Respect to you, sir! Mr. Benson giving respect to his predecessors and peers. A fascinating interview and I've grown even more fond of the artist.
@@oza8578 Funny how some of the very best guitar slingers are the humblest: Jimi, Carlos, Chet, Benson, etc.
" Good Sound , Good Feel and communicate with the audience. " That was a mouthfull .
george benson is a class act, I met him many years ago, he was a very gracious man, he let me play his guitar, while he played mine, but I was so intimidated my fingers got caught in the strings..Hes a great player
I could listen to him talk about music all day long

Benson giving props to Elvis! Right on Brother!!!
I recall asking a busker if he always played by ear, he replied "no, sometimes I play around the corner"
lmao was he british?
Barney Kessel, Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell … damn … what a jamm club that was.

I'd say very good singer, great guitarist.
Personality is great
OMG Barney And Jim and Benson played together. Any recordings of their sessions left???
Maybe I'm getting old, but this is good stuff, the names this man was mentioning, where are the singers today?
What benson played with Barney Kissel and Jim hall !? wow where can I find the recordings?
Google
Pretty sure George is some other species which has evolved beyond homo sapiens.
On Broadway all day🎸🎤🎧🥁🎹🪘🏆👑🐐

Good ears….man I think George has perfect pitch actually:-)))
He actually asks he's the one out of his friends who doesnt. It's in another clip from this.
I’m surprised to hear him mention Frankie Lane. “He rode a blazing saddle. He wore a shining star.”

I love GB but no mention of Grant Green? Really?
He left McDuff out in the cold too
I could listen to Benson's guitar if he would cut out the scat singing crap.
You should let him know.

That's my favorite part. Singing during my improvs improved my playing greatly.
