  • The ref ruled the ball hitting the bar was the same as the ball hitting the net. Is this the correct call, or should the point have been replayed?

The ref involved, Byron Fresco, responded in a Facebook comment: "Okay, everyone, it was the worst day of my refereeing career. I made an egregious error on this call. In looking at the video, I can tell now that it was a mistake. However, when I saw it in real time, I thought that the player made a play on the ball and then let it go to hit the crossbar. In that brief moment, I did not consider the crossbar. I felt he could have played the ball, but decided to let it hit the crossbar. That clouded my judgment at that moment. My bad, folks! I am not worthy!"

@@chea7z913 you're correct. i could have but when i realized it would hit the crossbar i intentionally stopped and let the ball go. i followed up with byron with this exactly question to see if because i could've made a play on the ball but didn't, that's why it wasn't a replay. but he replied that it still should've been a replay based on the rules.

@@byalextran So if it hits the cross bar in this situation, either with one bounce or none, it's a replay? Just like we all thought right?

    • @byalextran

@@chea7z913 correct. A replay regardless. Bryon further commented ...
"It does not matter if I thought he could have played the ball but purposely let it hit the crossbar. The rules state that if the ball bounces on the court and comes back down on the crossbar, it is a replay. Was there an opportunity for him to play the ball before it struck the crossbar? Possibly! However, that thought is irrelevant."

i'm the guy in blue pleading my case to the ref. ;)
in a previous match, the ref told us if the ball hit the center bar, it would be a replay. i took that understanding into this match.
if you look closely, you'll notice i intentionally stop myself from hitting the ball once i realized it was going to hit the center bar. i was banking on a replay.
however, the ref clarified it's only a replay if:
    1. the ball hits the bar on the way down before bouncing.
    2. the ball bounces and on the way up hits the bar.
what happen in this situation was _not_ a replay because the ball hit the bar on the way down after bouncing. for whatever reason, that's an exception to the rule.
bryon is the head ref of the APP, so i trust he knows what he's taking out. just confused how that exception isn't highlighted in the rule book.
11.L.5.b. Except on the serve, if the ball goes over the net and hits the center base, or any part of the horizontal bar, or the ball gets caught between the net and the horizontal bar, a replay will be called. Other than on the serve, if the ball goes over the net and bounces on the court and then performs any of the 3 above listed actions, a replay shall occur.

I think it's an exception because it doesn't affect play. If the bar isn't there on the second bounce the bar would just hit the ground meaning it would just be a fault like normal.
Sucks that it wasn't clearly explained to you before because you definitely would've hit the ball.

Exception? Aren’t exceptions listed in the rule book? Like “Except on the serve”. That is an exception...which is listed. The rule book is pretty clear on this one and even mentions the case where the ball bounces and then hits the bar. Where did the ref say the "exception" came from and/or is written? I don't believe he's correct... at least not as the rules are currently written. Moreover, other certified refs earlier ruled exactly how the written rules state.

@@shawnkrivjansky Great point. Rule books include exceptions. If its not stated, then it is not an exception. Rule books are not meaningful at all if people can cite exceptions that are not written!!

Look at it this way, ask yourself if your ability to make a play on the ball was affected by the ball changing trajectory as a result of hitting the bar. Not that it affect the rally, but could it. After the ball goes over the net, in all three cases, a) the ball hitting the bar on the downward path prior to bouncing, b) the ball hitting the bar on the upward trajectory after bouncing once, and c) the ball hitting the bar on the downward trajectory after bouncing once, the flight path of the ball was impeded by the bar, resulting in a hinder (hence replay). One of the key items to be aware of as a referee is that rule. Did a stoppage in play result from something that impeded the player from making a play.

That is a tough call to make in real-time. I didn’t think it hit the bar the first bounce, but obviously, it did. Props to the ref for responding with his mistake afterwards.

In section 11-Other rules. Rule 11.L.5 it states if the ball hits the cross bar it's a redo unless during a serve, then it's a fault.

  • @shawnkrivjansky

It does NOT matter if it bounces first or not. This is specifically outlined in the rules: 11.L.5.b. "Except on the serve, if the ball goes over the
net and hits the center base, or any part of the horizontal bar, or the ball gets caught between the net and the horizontal bar, a replay will be called. Other than on the serve, if the ball goes over the net and bounces on the court and then performs any of the 3 above listed actions, a replay shall occur." Also, literally in this same tournament... watch the Johns' vs Bar/JW Gold medal match... This IDENTICAL play happened. Ben hit a crazy block with serious backspin over the net... it BOUNCED on the opponent side... then came back to the net/BAR...and HIT the bottom bar... It was a DEAD BALL/REPLAY... immediately called by the lead ref. Now granted... it IS confusing, and the announcers did NOT know the exact rules and assumed the same as many here (and a lot of places) that the fact that it "bounced" changed how the rules apply. It does not. It is a replay (dead ball). Amazing shot by Ben...and almost surely should've been their point, but it was replayed.
