    Wow, great video. I've watched a lot of videos about recording and mixing acoustic guitar. Your method is unique and simple compared to most I have seen. The test is in how it sounds, and it sounds great! Thanks for the inspiration.

    This tutorial is very helpful! Only suggestion, as a beginner with home recording, I prefer to start with the bundled plug-ins, and then consider possible upgrades. But it's good to know what the alternatives are and they look like. Never heard of the Step FX before!

      @@chordsoforion since I'm here: when I record my Martin via DI, as I move my fingers along the strings, I always hear a metallic sound that is not as evident if I listened to the actual sound. Is this a known problem easy to solve, eg with a noise gate ?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  2 года назад

      The best way to control squeaks is to try and avoid them while playing. That being said, a de-esser or EQ can help to reduce squeaking when you mix down the recording.

    Im gonna start recording guitarsongs.
    I dont have a plugged in guitar. Does Zoom H4n works good with a not plugged in guitar like martin 00015?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 лет назад

      The Zoom H4N has built in mics that sound pretty good. You can definitely use them to record your guitar.

    The dry sound from the Zoom on your Logic is way better than when I record my Taylor GS Mini directly into Logic Pro X with a Scarlett 2i2. I wonder, is it the guitar, or is the Zoom that makes the difference? Thanks for posting this informative video.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 лет назад

      I would have to guess it is the difference in the guitars and their pickups, since the Zoom is just capturing the dry unaffected signal. My baritone has the 1st version of the Expression System pickup.

    • @sunjamrblues
      @sunjamrblues 5 лет назад

      @@chordsoforion - The pickup on the Taylor GS Mini is also an Expression System pickup called an ES-Go. It is a humbucker, and plugged into any of my amps, it sounds pretty good. But when I feed it as direct input into Logic, the result sounds awful, and working with Logic's equalizer etc barely improves it. If I mic the amp or the guitar, it sounds good. So if I want to record outside, I guess I'll have to start carrying a mic and stand, and just mic the guitar directly.

    How'd you sync up the tempo of the step sequencer filter thing since it sounds like you're playing pretty freely without a metronome. Did you adjust your tempo map manually, or did you just futz around until the tempo of the step sequencer was sort of at the average tempo of the guitar?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 лет назад +1

      I did not want to take the time on the video to describe, but I used the adaptive "smart" tempo option, which creates an automatic tempo map for an audio region.

    Did you teach yourself to work with Logic, if not can you recommend any videos that just teach audio recording, ( not midi or software instruments ) just plain ol acoustic guitar ? it is very deep to look at, it would be nice to be shown what the basic steps are for audio recording with real instruments. thanks for any advice, cheers

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, I taught myself how to use Logic with some practice and reading the Apple Pro Training Series book (amzn.to/2trG9PX). If you are more video focused in your learning style, I would definitely recommend Music Help Tech Guy here on RUclips. He's got a massive playlist of Logic Pro X tutorials: ruclips.net/video/hU5XhG5Ywbk/видео.html

    Hello.
    I like your channel and I’ve subscribed. I use a similar setup with a www.takamine.com/EAN40C and a zoom h6 to Cubase. I like the guitars pickup for live applications but when recording I haven’t been able to get a good tone. Direct acoustic pickups have “a sound” that isn’t what I like - as compared to condenser mics - sometimes a mix of pickup and mic is okay.
    Gah rambling... do you have any suggestions on getting a good tone with an acoustic pickup? I watched your video with stereo mics. Do you use the pickups to track out of convenience or is that part of your sound? Thank you for the video, I enjoyed it!

    Could you please complete the gear list(?) ; which string gauges are you using here....and is it the baritone equivalent of CGDGAD ?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 лет назад

      The tuning is "baritone standard" (BEADF#B), and the strings are the Elixir Nanoweb acoustic baritone set. I think it is .017 - .070.

    • @maxcuthbert100
      @maxcuthbert100 6 лет назад

      I've been tuning the same as you,Bill;D-D but if I drop the lowest string a tone and a half down and /or try for the equivalent of CDGDGAD I'm lucky to get a thud ,hence the question.Thanks for the info,I'll give it a whirl.

    When mixing and mastering, are you using your mono button as well for a reference?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 лет назад

      Yes - I normally put the mix into mono mode at times during mixing and mastering. It helps in revealing EQ and/or stereo phase issues.

    i find Zoom recorders sound louder than an interface anyone wanna agree with that?
    it seems no matter what audio interface i use running into logic the bounce audio is soo quiet compared to say a zoom q8 or this zoom h4

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 лет назад

      Are you referring to leaving the Zoom set to auto-level? If so, compression / limiting is going on to control dynamics which ends up with a louder signal. The problem with this is that you lose control in the mix as it is baked into the recording. I always leave auto-level turned off on my Zoom H4N and set the level so the peaks are well below 0dB. That way I have plenty of headroom to work with it when I bring it into Logic. If you want to make your mix louder in Logic, just put a limiter on the master bus and use it to increase the overall level where you want.

    • @codking82
      @codking82 5 лет назад

      @@chordsoforion but have you used an audio interface and had a situation happen where you record guitar with mic into interface and when you try to listen to it back in logic the volume is so low that you have to literally boost channel eq DB up 8 db

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 лет назад

      Absolutely. All the time. I normally record through my audio interface so the levels peak out at -12dB or so and kind settle in at about -18dB. If you are recording in 24 bit, no need to push the levels during recording. You have 114 dB of headroom. Here's an article worth checking out: www.soundonsound.com/sound-advice/q-how-much-headroom-should-i-leave-24-bit-recording

      I don't really know, as I have never tried to do that. I suspect you will need some modeling gear, like the Line 6 Vairax to get a decent sounding acoustic tone.
