thank you Louiee! ...let me know if there is another topic that you need help with. I may be able to make another presentation that you and others find valuable.
Thank you!! It took me until grad school for someone to ask me to make an annotated bibliography and everyone already knew how. This saved me an embarrassing email to my professor.
I understand...although before I became a professor I managed businesses for many years and practiced continuous improvement. Academia hangs on to traditions that are often times outdated and impractical. The annotated bibliography is an example. It is good for practicing how to summarize literature, but a spreadsheet can also be used for that. An AB is not good for organizing literature; a spreadsheet can do that very well. There is also great software available that can serve that purpose as well.
Thank you Dr. Dan! I am creating my first Annotated bibliography and at first I was intimidated, but after watching your video, I feel confident in my skills.

Great tip about citing in the annotation so you can use the information for a paper - for sure I will use that tip when I am writing my Thesis next year, thanks for uploading this video!
Hi, thank you for the video. I have to do an annotated bibliography for my M.P.S. program and I wish I had found this for the mid-point assignment. I am glad I found it for the final version because I am still iffy on everything from formatting to content. I do need clarification on something. If we cite the authors instead of 'this article/study' in order to facilitate its use on a final dissertation, you said that would be helpful. However, if we are quoting something we wrote on something else aren't we at that point not citing the author or the journal but ourselves? Especially if we are copy/pasting? Instructors have said that a few times in my program because we use TurnItIn to check for plagiarism and they have said that if we use/recycle previous work we need to cite ourselves, which is sort of annoying. 🤷
Hi, thank you! So helpful. I just started a Ph.D. program last week and my professor recommended your video. I have a question about more than one writer of an article.
Thanks Dr. Dan, what i'm confused about is do I reference the entire article before my annotation? My article is filled with citation and it's confusing.
Hello Tolesha. You first provide an APA reference as you would in a reference list. Then provide a summary of the article using information ONLY the author(s) revealed. If they cited other sources and you want to use that information, then you need to find, read, and provide another annotation and summary from that article. EXAMPLE: If Kuchinka (2020) discovered servant leadership is correlated with lower levels of stress, you reference Kuchinka (2020) and summarize that information. If Kuchinka (2020) discussed research by Davidson (2022) in his literature review and you want to use the information from Davidson (2022), you must find, read, and summarize the Davidson (2022) article in a new annotated listing. Have a Blessed day. Dr. Dan
Hello Arianna...consider a cover page as something that helps you. I would always recommend it so you can save your documents and quickly understand what they addressed if you look at them in the future. An abstract would not be needed because it is used to summarize a manuscript, and an AB is only a tool to use to write a paper; it is not actually a manuscript. Headers and page numbers are a professor's preference. Refer to the professor or a general rule would be to add them if you are unsure.
@@shakaYT1 I do not. There is no one style of an executive summary. It depends on many factors like company or industry type, depth of the original project or paper, and so on. If I had to write one for a class, then you could find generic examples. If you have to write one for a company, you could ask around for examples, use as a template, and then improve.
@@DrBooBoo could you do a quick video on the nuance of what your describing and like how you would go about building one. Kinda like how you described the sentence structure in this video?
Hi Dr. Dan. I've watched several videos trying to figure out how the heck do this annotated bibliography. Some people say we should line up the annotation with the second line of the reference. I'm so confused.
There is not a rule in the APA Manual, but a common practice is the annotation is indented an additional around 2-3 spaces (1/4 inch). This is done for a practical reason...so you can clearly see the reference and then the annotation. Then start with the next reference, hanging indent of 1/2 inch for the subsequent lines of the reference, and again another 2-3 spaces for the annotation. The end result is a nicely organized annotated bibliography.
Think of an Annotated Bibliography as a formal way of taking notes or summarizing a piece of literature. The formatting consists of the same information you would have in a reference list, plus the indented (hanging indent) summary.
@@christinam850 Christina...I recommend you seek help from the resources your school provides. Ask for extra help from the writing center (if they have one), professors, and any other resource they have. To be an effective scholarly writer takes time, practice, and feedback. I have some other videos that can help you, but talking to others who can help is important.
