      Hi Don, it's fantastic knowing that you've checked out some of the videos on my channel! :) - I'm a HUGE fan of your storyboards (you and I have actually crossed paths on two occasions...VERY briefly) - The first time I was aware of your work was back in 1998 when Robert Lamb began praising your talents - Actually, there's a six part interview with Robert in which he speaks very highly of you, and his time at Filmation - ruclips.net/video/L285M2Nby3I/видео.html - I'll respond to your other comments...:)

    Yah, this ep is also in my top ten.
    I still always find it funny that in the show, the Sorceress is outside the castle in her human form more often than not! Even the first episode of She-Ra has her outside in her human form, with only Origin Of The Sorceress giving her a way to be out and about but only for that one episode, as you know the Crystal of Allenar is never heard from again!

    I always feel like this one has the vibe of a season finale, of course back then, quite a lot of 80s cartoons with choice exceptions (TMNT, Transformers, Thundercats) didn't have finales, but the stakes are raised considerably high here, with Grayskull taken, Sorceress helpless etc, and both protagonist and antagonist even infiltrate one another's base of operations in this one.

First of all bc we see it from a different perspective and only the silhouette, which is quite suggestive, second bc it gives a little of a thrill watching him buried by the rocks when you don't know yet if he has already the power or not, and third bc this is another of those little revealing hints the series where we learn that when he says "By the Power of Grayskull", he's already an ustoppable beast!

    4:15 I always thought the whole thing in the Cannon Films movie where it's implied that everyone on Eternia is a vegetarian, and Teela has never apparently even SEEN meat on a bone and doesn't understand what it is. But then Man-at-Arms DOES know what it is. They're clearly eating meat here in the cartoon. Is Teela just really sheltered, or did the rulers of Eternia ban everyone from eating meat right before she was born?
    I guess it's good that Battle Cat isn't in the movie, since, as an obligate carnivore, he would've died of malnutrition. Or I guess he could just hunt for his own food. But clearly Teela has never seen him eat or else she would know what bones are. (And after hearing about one of the tigers in The Beastmaster dying after being anesthetized so they could paint it black, it's probably for the best that Battle Cat was left out of the movie. Penny-pinching Cannon probably wouldn't have provided the best care for a tiger and something similar could've happened.)

    • @cerealgeekTV
      @cerealgeekTV  Год назад

      Yeah, given the direction Cannon Films went in with that live action movie, Battle Cat would've probably stuck out like a sore thumb! :) - And yes, we definitely don't need any more dead tigers on movie sets...

    Granamyr (had to look that spelling up) and Tiamat are probably the most iconic dragons of my youth (with the Herculoid's laser-eyed pet and comic's Fin Fang Foom distant contenders). But even the generic ones of Filmation still stand out and make me wish Filmation had swooped in and either gotten right to continue AD&D or do similarry inspired one. The tech in this series was cool and all, but I'd really have been all in for a full on sword & sorcery series. A couple of errors here James, not only did you get the title of the episode wrong (Dawn of Dragoon and not The Dragon Invasion) but you also mispronounced H R Geiger's name, whoops. :D (It's pronounced gee ger not guy ger, a very common mistake though). Ah yes Chopper-Jitsu, just before the FCC made it clear that evil Asians can exist in cartoons, as long as they have green skin. Ming the Merciless (Defenders of the Earth), Dr. No (James Bond Jr.) and The Mandarin (Iron Man 90's series), best and probably the prime examples of that. very interesting though to learn more about that unique transformation sequence, some of the true secrets behind Castel Grayskull and of course the infamous early mistake where the Sorcerers revealed her form of Zoar to the villains. Then there was Teela's audio error. This episode is just a magnet for mistakes, wouldn't you say? ;) Blood Falls would have likely gave Arthur H Nadel a splitting headache with complaints if the characters said it's actual name of course. ;) Michael Reeves does indeed do good work. :)
