The Real Ghostbusters still holds up as a series to this day. But some of the episodes are so solid, that if you've watched the whole series, your top 10 episodes are going to be very close to everyone elses. When you see the banger episodes, you know it, and they stick with you forever.
But I think that there are SO many fantastic episodes in that first 78 batch, that yes, certain episodes WILL appear...but not all...AND the order isn't always guaranteed - Even in this comments section I'm told that certain choices of mine would not work for others - As I said, this list in my top ten, NOT the definitive top ten! :)
Oh man, you could even make a Top 20 list out of the first 2 syndicated seasons alone. And you nailed almost all of my personal favorites as well! I'd like to share other spisodes that I think are also great and worth including in a top epsiodes list:
"The Long, Long, Long, Etc. Goodbye" - A noir detective ghost helping out the team, a great mummy monster design, and the "Yo, Fool!" line from Winston.
"Rollerghoster" - One of the times when the Ghostbusters brand was infringed, pretty unique haunting situation, AND Janine and Egon actually did go out on a date!
"The Hole in the Wall Gang" - Another pretty unique haunted house episode, with a great final act that made me realize the Ghostbusters' equipment also include small handsaws.
"Play Them Ragtime Boos" - This epsidoe is worth watching for the scene where the Ghostbusters evolve from the Beatles to New Wave to Hair Metal in a spectral battle of the bands.
"Xmas Marks the Spot" - Egon's Ecto containment suit is the epitome of 80's scifi anime design and Venkman trying to masquerade as the Ghost of Christmas Past
"Take Two" - The Real Ghostbusters are making a movie about themselves.. and its the live action Ghostbusters movie!
"Play Them Ragtime Boos" has one of my favorite Egon lines of all time, "It appears that Ray is in a state of preternaturally induced hypnogogic ataraxia!" (followed by the translation) "I said he's possessed!" :)
Hi James,
Really enjoyed your list, so many memories came flooding back here. I really loved the episode "The man who never reached home". Seen it a few times since that first time but the next episode I have only seen once. That episode I found to be so creepy. The headless motorcyclist was a brilliant episode and either my memory is deceiving me or it wasn't as strong an episode as I remember. I was hoping it was going to be on this list. Still some really good choices.
Keep up the amazing work.
I'm glad you enjoyed the list - Yeah, both "The Man Who Never Reached Home" and "The Headless Motorcyclist" are great episodes - That's the thing about the first 78 episodes...there's SO many great episodes to choose from! :)
Excellent choices James.
Thank you! :)
Ok Here's mine
10. When Halloween Was Forever
9. The Grundel
8. The Revenge of Murray The Mantis
7. Flip Side
6. Ragnarok and Roll
5. Knock Knock
4. You Can't Take it With You
3. Take Two
2. Citizen Ghost
1. The Boogeyman Cometh
LOVE it! :)
@ Thanks!!!!!!!
This is the only thing I can say 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏. The best and a very well spent 47 minutes and 19 secs.
Thank you for the VERY kind words - I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
@cerealgeekTV I couldn't imagine how hard it was for you to do the top 10 list. But it's still great.
Would more than welcome another top 10 of your favourite episodes. From any '80s cartoon. Cause more than likely it would be a series I know very well. I just need that essential Crealgeek TV video. To get those memories rewakened.
@@michaelrlomax1977 - I do have another top ten list planned...I'm just not sure when it'll be completed - I'm kind of aiming for late 2025! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Then it will be worth waiting for.
Superb content 🎉 not just this video, all of them.
Thank YOU for the very lovely words - That means a LOT! :)
@@cerealgeekTV you allow me (and I'm sure many others) to go back over these classics we saw as children and comment along with the action, something I'd love to do in person with a talent like yourself. We are not worthy Mr Eatock
@@streetfightingman4240 - You're being far too kind...but I'll take it! :)
Wait, Everett Peck was also de ghost/monster designer on RGB? I honestly thought he only worked on Extreme! Now that you mention it, Watt's design is pretty much the style that Peck has especially Duckman and i can assume Ahhhh Real Monsters!!!
It makes Extreme more special to know that Peck worked in both shows
Yeah, Everett Peck was responsible for a LOT of ghost designs! :)
The voice of the little girl in the Boogieman Cometh episode is Susan Blu who also voices Stormer On Jem And The Holograms. 🤗👩🎤👧🧸
Yes, Susan Blu voices both Megan and Kenny! :) - Sadly, due to scheduling conflicts, she actually recorded her dialogue on a separate day...
I love that feeling of community and "hey, I know that voice!" from animation in general.
Mrs.Rogers Neighborhood is one of my favorite Real Ghostbusters Episode
It's SO good! :)
Thank you for the thirst trap parity. It was definitely more of what I enjoy. 😂 I really dislike how Winston has been treated by this franchise as a whole. I'm glad that he got some love in Frozen empire. These are all great episodes. Man, DiC used to produce stuff of unparalleled quality. I loved these episodes where the stakes were more dire, and winning wasn't a guarantee (at least in my 8-year old brain). This was such an epic series. Thank you again for helping to get this out on DVD. I love my time life set. ❤
Thank you for the kind words - I would say that the cartoon, specifically the syndicated series, gave a lot of love to Winston and explored his character as much as the others! :)
@cerealgeekTV definitely moreso than the movies.
Superb list!
Thank you! :)
You did some of the commentary on the timelife box set. I subscribed.
Thank you...and yes, I contributed a great deal to that rather epic DVD boxset! :)
These are great episodes, my favorite ones are with The Boogieman and Samhain.
GREAT villains for sure! :)
So glad you had Ragnarok and Roll on this list. Such a great episode and if I recall not much actual ghost busting. Ditilio's speech at the end is so well done and poignant that all these years later still sticks with me.
Not knowing what sort of amazing episodes we could have gotten in later seasons of ABC left them alone bugs me. I think there were still good episodes even later on, but they didn't hit as hard as those first two.
Also seriously the Ghostbuster kids were awful. Even as a kid I wanted them gone. I don't want to see kids dumbing up the busters! I want to see the busters doing cool stuff and helping kids that feel genuine, like in the Boogieman or Grundel episodes.
Yeah, I just find it tough to to watch the show beyond season one and the syndicated season...I wish I could! :)
my top 10:
- _Ragnarok and Roll_
- _Janine, You've Changed_
- _The Collect Call of "Cathulhu"/Cthulu_
- _Night Game_
- _Look Homeward, Ray_
- _Play them Ragtime Boos_
- _Who're You Calling 2-Dimensional?_ (Frank Welker as Winchester Wolf is almost Galvatron-esque with hints of Rumble)
- _Chicken, He Clucked_ (Frank Welker as the demon is very Galvatron-esque)
- _No One Comes to Lupusville_
- _The Revenge of Murray The Mantis_ (using Stay-Puft was great).
GREAT choices! :) And yes, Welker's Winchester Wolf is very close to Galvatron...same tone just with a little more of an accent - I'd say that Morganon in "Chicken, He Clucked" is actually a pretty spot on Galvatron! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Yeah, Morganon is definitely spot-on Galvatron (minus the Transformers Scott Brownlee Voice Processing)! I heard Frank use this voice in a lot of Hanna-Barbera shows including some older Scooby Doo series. It was his go-to for "Crazy Old Man" voices so I'm not surprised that Wally Burr got him to use it for Season 3 Galvy.
I was hoping James would do this someday. I know how much he loves this show. Probably rivals me! I've never dared, but did think about, making a top 10 for my channel. I just didn't have the guts or bravery to be held to my list. *lol* Though, the list I have in my head holds rather closely to James' list. I was pleasantly surprised he had Janine, You've Changed on the list. It's definitely #10 on mine. Out of all the re-vamped episodes it was certainly the best animated and had a solid story to accompany that. Maybe one day I'll settle down and finally put a list together. It's probably time...
It took me a good few hours to finalize the list - In short, I put the list of episodes onto a spreadsheet (I already knew pretty much my favorites) - But I went through every episode and gave it a bunch of ratings (writing, visuals, uniqueness, etc., that kind of thing) - When I got the list down to twenty THAT is when the hard work began! :)
Love the Lord of the Rings reference in ragnarock and roll
I'm no fan of Lord of the Rings, but even I can clock those Tolkien references from time to time! :)
I am sorry one of these slots must go to the Sandman episode. Animation was top tier. And an episode where Winston saves the day.
No need to be sorry - As I said numerous times in this video, this list is my personal top ten, NOT the definitive top ten! :)
I used to find the Boogieman design & voice scary as a kid lol and I had Knock Knock on vhs. Great visuals and definitely reminds me of the films. I was surprised to not see the first appearance of Sam Hain here or the revenge of Murray the mantis or citizen ghost
Yeah, I just never cared too much for the Samhain episodes...I felt that Murray The Mantis would've been better without the sudden appearance of the now-heroic Marshmallow Man..."Citizen Ghost" is definitely one of those that just sits outside the top ten for me! :)
my favorite is and forever will be episode 92: flipside. The People Busters episode.
Not only a great episode...but the animation in that episode is something else! :)
Great video. Best of the best! So many great ones in the syndicated season.👻🚫
It had a great deal of freedom to do SO much more than the network episodes! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Also the animation for the episode Janine you've changed is pretty good albeit not perfect and yes it is from the later seasons I believe the show had one more season after which had Janine looking closer to her season 3 design LOL!! I guess they ran out of ideas as the final season only consisted of only 4 episodes for season 7. Also you didn't comment about her look being changed again for Extreme Ghostbusters which is closer to her original appearance so did the spell of the fairy ghost fade or is it just a mere coincidence or oversight by the producers?🤔🧚👻🚫
@@SuperMarioBrosIII - With regards to Janine's look in Extreme Ghostbusters...that was simply the character designers for that show making her look older...like they did with Egon...although I'm not quite sure what they were doing with Slimer...:)
Don't take this the wrong way but in 50 seconds....we die - Egon
"Awww...not without dinner!" :)
@@cerealgeekTV Egon become a ghost about 3 times which foreshadows Ghostbusters Afterlife. 👻☃🚫🤔
My favorite episode will always be “Doctor, Doctor.” I think some of it comes from having seen John Carpenters The Thing at too young an age and therefor the body horror appealed to me.
The cleverness in the writing of that episode is something else...it's very, VERY quotable! :)
Yes, YES...ALL OF THE YES!!! James, you were right! This video didn't disappoint. :) A fantastic selection of episodes and all worthy of being in this Top 10 list. :) Though I wonder what lead you to saying that Ashi produced Janine Meltnitz, Ghostbuster. It's only because when I think of Ashi, I think of the more detailed, vibrant and coloured episodes of M.A.S.K. (Like The Lost Riches of Rio for example). Well being well animated, the colours in Janine Meltnitz, Ghostbuster looked a little bit washed out, however it may simply be because it was done by another animation team at the studio, that's a possibility. Though Cold Cash and Hot Water could very well be an Ashi episode, from the way it looked, but who knows? Alice Derith and the Ghost Umpire are indeed two of the best characters ever! :) You also made me think about something. Some of the episodes had Tahiti music numbers right, well I noticed the couple of times they were used for the syndicated episodes, those same episodes were on video, so yeah it never occurred to me that the TV broadcasts would have been the ones to omit them, like in Knock, Knock and Venkman's Ghost Repellers. That really did open my eyes. But what I really was chuffed about this Top 10, my favourite episode of the show was at number one and yes thank you for mentioning DiTillo's speech and how well it worked with that awesome music cue by Shuki Levy, and yes sir it does get me teared up even to this day. :) Absolutely outstanding job on today's video. Do keep up the good work. :)
I always felt that Janine Meltnitz, Ghostbuster, while Ashi-helmed, was definitely outsourced further. The style doesn't quite match the in-house episodes like Egon's Dragon or Ghosttbuster of the Year. It's a lot more exaggerated as far as the designs and animation's concerned. I want to say this might have been the handiwork of Anime R (an Ashi regular around that time) by the designs and timing of the animation looking familiar to some of their work on anime like SPT Layzner and Dream Hunter REM.
The washed out look appears to be either due to who Ashi (or DiC) hired for paint/camera, or just the print being old, given it affects multiple episodes.
@@Newsystuffs Interesting to hear you mention that, as apparently it was very common place for studios to outsource to other studios. James even acknowledged this a few times on his videos. Anime R could have very well been involved in providing animation for Janine Meltnitz, Ghostbuster, but we may never know, since it was hard to keep track of these things. But it IS a strong possibility nonetheless. I always assumed that Ashi or at least their A-team of animators used high quality paints for vibrant colours as seen in episodes of M.A.S.K. like the aforementioned Lost Riches of Rio episode and others like Vanishing Point and Blackout. This could have been done by Ashi too, but perhaps by their B-team which used slightly vibrant colours for their paints, or another studio was handed the colouring duties for this episode, as that happens too with studios just been hired to play 'colouring in' with the animation like it was a colouring book for kids, sort off. :D Still, it is one of the better animated episodes, especially the final act's battle against Proteus. RGB has had some episodes done by far cheaper studios, Boo-Dunnit comes to mind for sure in that department. ;)
I have some layout artwork for "Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster" and a few others, confirming that Ashi Productions worked on them...much like MASK they always had the characters looking wonderfully heroic when compared to most other episodes! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Interesting. :) No doubt a few pieces of those will be showcased on the channel at some point? :) Thanks for letting us know James. :)
@@David315842 Indeed, and that's the problem with old mateirals from shows of this vintage. It's possible the production materials regarding exact specifics are either lost to time or just didn't exist (Toei was really guilty of this even with their anime productions like Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball, as, like in Transformers or GI Joe, any additional studio involved was uncredited). While I'm confident this was handled by Anime R, the lack of proper documentation on the matter is a bit disappointing. Ditto that times ten for the Transformers episode Microbots -- Anime R's style is visible in several shots (like Warpath driving up to Megatron), but between the lack of proper documentation plus the use of what is clearly one of the show's Korean regulars assisting, it gets lost in the shuffle. I assume Ashi just farmed the paint out, that's usually what they did on their other projects. And the DiC just shipped it elsewhere for camera duties.
As for the cheaper episodes, oh god. Say what you want about Sei Young and Saerom's work by the show's tail end, but the first two seasons had just as many episodes that looked rather rough (as much as I like When Halloween Was Forever, Chicken he Clucked and Rollerghoster, those episodes had some very rough animation) and made episodes like this, Knock Knock and Ragnarock and Roll stand out even more. So I'm glad DiC managed to grab TMS, Ashi, Asia-Do and Studio World for this series if nothing else.
Great review of a great show
Thank you, Dennis! :)
One of my favorite eps is _Look Homeward, Ray_ because of the winged puma monster, which coincidentally, was a more monstrous version of my Original (eventually Transformers) character that i created in 1983/84, but with bat wings instead of feathered ones and a much uglier appearance. I was like OK WHO WAS READING MY MIND WHEN THEY CAME UP WITH THAT? lol
I always found that winged puma kind of scary...I think it's the GIANT unblinking eyes! :)
@@cerealgeekTV yeah, it definitely was horrifying, but it was supposed to be. Wonder if someone could ask Marc Scott Zicree how he came up with the thing.
No Flip Side? That's in my top 3, personally, though all your picks are damn good and definitely belong on a top 10.
That's one of those episodes that sits outside the top ten for me...but not by much! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Hella valid! And there are enough great episodes of this show that forming a top ten is a legitimate battle.
@@cerealgeekTV now we need the top ten honorable mentions!
yeah, Ragnarok and Roll really was something else.
A beautiful, BEAUTIFUL story! :)
@@cerealgeekTV I did find it odd that the one guy was named "DiTillio" but I hadn't caught on back then that it was a reference to Larry DiTillio because I hadn't realized it was cuz those two worked together lol.
@@cerealgeekTV the main reason I didn't really clue in about DiTillio is as far as I knew, Larry DiTillio hadn't worked for DiC. So it was like "waitaminute Larry DiTillio didn't work for DiC, must be a coincidence lol". If it had been Filmation, that mighta been a different story.
@@shebakoby - Yeah, DiTillio and JMS left Filmation at exactly the same time...JMS went to DiC and I believe that DiTillio went to TMS (I need to look at the dates on the letters and scripts for his Galaxy High School material)...:)
📺Junior Ghostbusers were required to mimic The Real Ghostbusters, Jason was the brian🧠like Egon, Donald was the Peter aka the mouth👄of the group and Catherine was a cross between Ray and Winston. 👻🚫☃🌆
That's an accurate assessment! :)
I also found Knock Knock deeply unsettling as a child. I actually still find it the stuff of nightmares. Genuinely frightening. Do you think it would get past censors today, as a kids’ show? I mean, if it was menacing to us tough 80s boys, imagine the effect on the protected new generations!
I'm sure that an episode like "Knock, Knock" would get past censors today...at least I hope it would! :)
@@cerealgeekTV I’m just an ageist 40-year-old 😱
I really wish they had used HP Lovecraft stuff for Frozen Empire instead of what they did. Cthulhu or a serial number filled off stand in would have really felt like a threat that needed multiple generations coming together to face!
100% agree - I couldn't stand it when people said that Frozen Empire was just like the cartoon - NO, it wasn't anything like the cartoon - The Real Ghostbusters often dealt with a small core cast of characters, had an A plot and a B plot, and showcased a linear story that made sense...with a satisfactory conclusion! :) - Frozen Empire was a mess...
@ I didn’t hate the movie but it definitely needed another pass on the script. It was another victim of the writers guild strike
Galaxy high video now that took me back
At some point next year I'll be posting a two part video on the development of the show...as I have SO much never-before-seen production material! :)
@cerealgeekTV I'll with keep an eye out for it cheers
Distinct lack of 'The Thing in Mrs. Faversham's Attic' on this list.
As I've said to many people, this is my personal top ten, not the official/definitive top ten - And given how many contenders there are from the first and syndicated season that could effortlessly get in, I believe there are VERY few top ten lists that actually match! :) - If it's any consolation, I'm always celebrating "The Thing in Mrs. Faversham's Attic" - ruclips.net/user/shortsqFcXdCLWcvM
@@cerealgeekTV It's true. Like... this show was so freaking good. So many bangers.
@@isleofredemption - That's the thing...the episodes just outside my top ten...could easily be a part of my top ten - In those first 78 episodes it was rare for an episode to be bad - Even if the animation wasn't on par, the story was always wonderful! :)
Good list!
I still find it interesting that when Janine suited up in uniform in "Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster", she chose one of Peter's uniforms; Peter, of the 4 Ghostbusters, has the most psychologically assusuring presence - it makes sense that Janine would wear his outfit while confronting evil on her own, as he was the one who would be the first in the team brave enough to stand up to the villains.
It's more likely that his uniform would simply fit her the best. Peter is the shortest and skinniest Ghostbuster on the cartoon.
@Rocket1377 standing side by side, only Ray had a distinctly different build, until the later subsequent ABC seasons, when they slimmed him down.
Fun little fact about that scene - When I was a kid, I designed a Ghostbusters uniform that was all black with pink collars and cuffs...it looked rather spiffy - A year or so later, when I saw "Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster", I was shocked to see those colors on a spare uniform in the cupboard that Janine Melnitz is looking through as she prepares to suit up! :)
🙂👍🏽🎥
Thank you, John! :)
@@cerealgeekTV your welcome.
The later seasons get a bad wrap imo. While yes slimer can be slightly grating at times. There are a number of very fun episodes. Flip city, jokes on ray, sticky business, somethings going around, and elementary my dear Winston are some personal favorite episodes.
I feel the same way!
I also agree! There's a lot of great concepts in later episodes. Unfortunately, more times than not they can be brought down by network standards. If you can push past all that you can find some gems in the rough. Such as:
The Grundel
Flip Side
The Haunting of Heck House
Elementary My Dear Winston
If I Were a Witch Man
The Halloween Door
Just for starters...!
A few gems, yes, but the later seasons deserve their bad reputation. Most of the best episodes are from seasons 1 & 2, and most of the worst episodes are from seasons 3 onwards.
Oh yeah, I don't hate the latter seasons...it's just that once the voice cast changes, Slimer's "pomoted", and it becomes a network show again, it just doesn't appeal to me as much - Just one of those things! :)
Yeah. Best Advice for watching RGB, Just watch the first and Syndicated stuff. The Rest is pretty much crap.
As soon as I no longer hear those familiar tones of Lorenzo Music and Laura Summer, I kind of tune out...:(
@@cerealgeekTV Sadly. I think the guy that replaced Lorenzo COULD have done a Good Job, because he does a Good Imitation of Bill Murray, He just did the Wrong One! But I bet that is the Producers Fault really.
@@the_flyattractor8656 - Yeah, I remember Dave Coulier in the 90s saying that he impersonated Bill Murray's character in Caddyshack for Peter Venkman...SUCH a bizarre choice! :(
@@cerealgeekTV Question is "Was that HIS Choice or the Producers Choice" Cause lets face it. RGB made a LOT of Dumb Choices.
