Both Ghostbusters shows are awesome because I was born in that decade, 4, seeing both cartoons and wanna be a Ghostbuster busting ghosts. Great vid, Secret Galaxy.
I like how the Ghostbusters animated series is a sequel in real time from the original, so Kong and Spenser are succeeded by their sons Kong Jr. and Spenser Jr. but Tracy the Gorilla is just himself because I guess he never ages
It’s the 1980’s and with several different cable companies around, literally going one town over could reveal channels you didn’t get at home or your favorite shows coming on at different times. I’m spending the weekend at my older brother’s place and playing different games with my nephew (who was more like my little brother). I decided I wanted to play Ghostbusters, and he says “Okay, who gets to be the gorilla?” I look at him like he’s crazy and say “There’s no gorillas in Ghostbusters.” And after about a half hour of me trying to teach him how to be Egon to my Ray, we gave up. Later that afternoon we’re watching cartoons on WGN out of Chicago (which was pretty cool in the little river town I grew up in.) and for the first time I see the adventures of Jake, Eddie, and Tracy the ape. After finding it on WGN back at my house I watched both shows, but the aforementioned didn’t last as long and I forgot about it for years.
While the gorilla in kaki shorts and fedora and the talking old car were certainly memorable, all of us kids back then used to refer to this show as "the fake Ghostbusters with the gorilla". But in my country, there was no porn associated to the cartoon. 😂
i loved the theme to the filmation ghostbusters.. I still find myself singing it whenever someone says "Let's go". ... Also my head canon had the human called kong and the gorilla called tracey because in my head they switched brains.. (this was also my reasoning for how inspector gadget fit so much stuff in his head and wasnt very bright and why his dog "brain" was so smart)
5:45 ...Hell of a coincidence! I recently subscribed to CerealgeekTV just a few days ago! That channel is a wonderful treasure trove of privied information.
How did I not know this? This is gold! I mean yeah ghostbusters v The Real Ghostbusters, I mean the dodgy 1989 vhs video cassette story! This should be common knowledge! Thanks guys as always for the top notch content! 😊😊😊
I remember catching The Ghost Busters on TV once, and I felt deceived and betrayed by TV Guide. I don’t know how much I actually watched, but I know I didn’t make it through the whole episode before flipping channels
When I was a kid in the 80s I was told by my cousin that these Ghostbusters were part of a deleted scene from the Ghostbusters movie. I was so confused on how and why there was a gorilla, among other things, and how it all went in.
Sony / Columbia can always pick up this property and merge it in with the Ghostbusters property they have. They're already planning multiple universe type movies anyway. This would be a perfect one to use.
I remember looking in the TV guide as a kid seeing Ghostbusters was on at 2 in the morning only to find it was an episode of the live-action being used as filler in the early hours. This was my first introduction to the "other" Ghostbusters.
After hearing the other segments bleeped by Dan from that adult tape, my mind immediately went to The Clerks scene. Which means that just maybe one of those segments was Happy Scrappy Hero Pup.
This is sooo crazy! I remember the two different animated series in the 80's but never ever heard or saw anything about an earlier live action Ghost Busters series. This is wild!
Thank you for covering Filmation’s Ghostbusters. I was a big fan of the “Real” cartoon as a kid but I was also able to catch the Filmation show every morning and love its campy feel. I need to check which VHS tape I still have…
I do remember seeing a VHS of the live action The Ghostbusters in Blockbuster once. I can't remember if I already knew about it after the cartoon version came out or not, but I remember looking at the pictures on the box and thinking how cheesy it looked.
@@jackgilchrist It was pretty much an F-Troop reunion show since you had both Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch in it. Cheesy as hell but funny at the same time.
Ghostbusters tormented me as a kid. My grandmother only got a few TV stations, so I'd see "Ghostbusters" in the TV guide and get all excited. Then this would come on and my hope and dreams were dashed in an instant. Keep in mind that The Real Ghostbusters was often listed as just Ghostbusters also.
I remember as a kid watching TV, the announcer would say Ghostbusters is coming up next, so I'd stay tuned. When that Ghostbusters logo appeared, I would be SO disappointed! I'll never forget that feeling.
I was spared seeing two Ghostbusters on the air at the same time, but I was really baffled to find a VHS of Filmmation Ghostbusters at a small-time video rental store some time in 1998 or 1999. (status unknown if it was one of the dirty ones)
Yeah, I remember my first time watching Filmation Ghostbusters and yelling “What the Hell is this?!” Then Mom ran into the living room and tore my butt up for using foul language. 😐
Bob Burns, the guy who played the ape in the 1975 version, was kind of a B grade Forrest J Ackerman. He founded a short lived horror magazine, too, and had an incredible collection of movie props too!
I still remember when I was a kid I saved $49 in mostly pennies to buy The Real Ghostbusters Firehouse playset, I remember the cashier counting out the change and everything. I thought Toys R Us was "the biggest store Ever." because at the time it was the first place I had been to with the high warehouse ceilings. 😄👍
I was a fan of both and as a kid I didn’t even know the difference I just knew I got to see two Ghostbusters cartoons every day. I was also a big fan of the villains in this show and the realm they lived in. I do wish someone would release some updated figures from it though. I think I have one of those tapes…need to check the end of it…Great video as always, dude!
When I was a kid, my dad's work lead to us moving halfway across country. When we moved into our new house I looked at the tv guide to see when my favorite tv shows were on. I saw Ghostbusters was on daily, I was over excited. So the next day I put it on, and I saw a gorilla instead of Slimmer. I was like "what is this..." I could never get into it.
Probability someone have already point it out, but just in case... The Filmation GHOSTBUSTERS make a cameo in a IDW GHOSTBUSTERS comic crossover between the "movie" and cartoon universes, along with other cameos like the offbrand anime GHOSTBUSTERS from Tokyo ESP
I remember my Mom telling me there was a Ghostbusters cartoon about to debut. I was excited. Turned on the TV and had the reaction at 11:01 only maybe without profanity.
I personally LOVED the "Lets Go Ghostbusters " cheer the team would do and their Mega high five they would do. And FYI i recently read that the Main reason why The DIC series was called "The Real Ghostbusters " was to kinda Twist the Knife to Filmation cause they played such Hardball with the Name. And they thought Lou Sheimer and Filmation were just gonna Roll over to the big studios.
I remember! What an odd day that was. It was surreal that I’d get excited initially for an ad for a version of the Ghostbusters that turned out to be, not _The Real Ghost Busters!_ I recall the ad with the kid, and I lived in Manhattan at the time, it was all so very strange. I just accepted my (then) uncanny reality. These Filmation Ghost Busters were not “my” Ghost Busters! I do recall seeing a music video of the The Real Ghost Busters (on cable) before the cartoon aired featuring the live action film’s theme song with the animated series pretty sweet 80’s anime style aesthetic. I didn’t know what it was for, and seeing it would also be, pretty surreal because it occurred, also, with no explanation! Great Stuff, as always!
I saw a few episodes of this show when I was a young lad in the 80s. I didn’t care that it was different from the Real Ghostbusters. To me at the time, the more Ghostbusters, the better!
Fun Fact: The IDW Ghostbusters comics have a couple of references to Filmation's Ghost Busters. In Ghostbusters: Get Real Issue #2, we see a zoo gorilla that looks quite like Tracy from the cartoons. Later on in the comic, there are multiple portals that feature different GB incarnations including the cast of the Filmation's cartoon as well as several parodies, like the the Penguin-Hunters from the anime Tokyo ESP & the Ghost Wrestlers from Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling.
For me, Linda Gary will always be the voice of Research Director Maura Cassidy of the Arthur C. Clarke Astronomical Observatory (aka "Starlab") in the 1970s sci-fi radio series _Alien Worlds._
I knew all of this and the company Just For Kids having a porno side company. What I didn't know until now is that they "crossed the streams" so to speak. Holy hell, what a blunder.
The funny thing is, as a kid, not knowing about the original Ghostbusters, I assumed the DiC cartoon was called "The Real Ghostbusters" purely to be ironic (what with it being animated).
I remember watching this when it was briefly available on Netflix. One, there was one alright episode out of the huge batch I watched (it was summer and college was out). Two, the Filmation Busters were horrendously over-equipped so as to not have to worry about stressing out the kids too much by introducing "drama" or "tension." And last, the writers forgot that invisible doesn't mean ethereal, and Eddie's magic belt from Merlin (stay with me here...) let him pass through walls... once. I think once.
I always thought it was a missed opprotunity that there was never a _Ghostbusters_ and _Real Ghostbusters_ crossover. It would have to take place across parallel dimensions since both teams are located in New York, but still, it practically writes itself! I just imagine the Ghost Busters introducing themselves, then Peter whines about copyright infringement while Ray plays with Tracy. Meanwhile, Egon finds everything "fascinating" and Winston, just like in the episode "Flip Side", somehow missed the boat again and is dealing with Prime Evil's minions back in their Manhattan with Janine, Louis, and Slimer. It could've been *huge*. Alas, it will never happen…
Wow, I completely forgot that I tried to enter that contest but I got one of the names wrong. Then The Real Ghostbusters aired a week later and never watched Filmations Ghostbusters ever again.
Filmation's fatal mistake was not opening the syndication package with reruns of the original. Then it wouldn't have seemed so random and confusing to kids who were too young to have seen the original. Their other mistake was using the same damned scene in EVERY episode.
I agree if they had put the original show out before launching the new show, they might build up an audience. They would gotten the show on the air immediately given it was already made. This would given them time to make a better cartoon instead rushing to be first. They would already gotten into the minds of the kids this way instead of being total WTF moment when it came on.
I remember not being fooled by the competing Ghostbusters shows, and preferring the movie tie-in show (mostly because, as the video points out, I had no idea the '70s live-action show existed). My brother liked both shows, however, because each one had an interesting company car; having a showy enough vehicle on your program was enough to keep that five-year-old's attention.
I could tell the difference as a kid, and had several of the toys. The concept of a bunch of supernatural themed He-Man villains was still pretty cool.
I remember when the cartoon came out, and I wasn’t angry, thinking, “Ok, something completely different. Let’s have a look.” I wasn’t disappointed with the concept - really liked Tracy- but it really felt juvenile. I was only watching “The Real Ghostbusters” every once in a while. But thanks to RUclips, I’ve had fun occasionally dipping into the old live action just for its silliness.
Santa was definitely confused by the two shows. I wanted Egon, Venkman, or Stantz. Instead I got a gorilla in a hat. That was a disappointing Christmas morning.
What's interesting is The Real Ghostbusters actually took a slap at Filmation's Ghostbusters. In the episode, Janine is dating a guy who covertly steal Egon Spengler's ghostbusting tech. Producing a robotic version of the dematerializer, he almost puts the Real Ghostbusters out of business. Until something goes awry, with Egon insisting ghosts have to be 'contained' instead of being dematerialized. Though nobody really made the connection, I thought this was really brazen of Columbia and DIC.
Its noteworthy to mention the Real Ghostbusters was brilliant, and biting. If it was just disposable junk, despite being linked to a movie (which wasnt unusual...think how Robocop, a hard R movie, had a cartoon), it would have been forgotten quickly also. You had scary and insightful episodes, including Night Game, Samhaim/Halloween, Boogeyman, and others. It only got killed when it became too silly with Slimer taking over and poorer animation.
at 9 years old I DID watch Entertainment Tonight, because before they went to commercial they would say "Next up on E.T.," and I thought that they would show something about the alien.
Seriously, WTF??? A porno at the end of the Filmation Ghostbusters VHS tape??? That's the most bizarre & hilarious thing I've ever heard!!! 😁😁😁😁😁😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was totally confused by Filmation’s Ghostbusters when it aired, but fortunately I had a mom who did watch Entertainment Tonight and knew the answer to “What the f*ck is this sh*t?” so my confusion didn’t last long.
There are two things I remember well about this show: 1) My grandma getting these toys for us for Christmas rather than the stuff from "The Real Ghostbusters," and 2) The dress-up sequence was ridiculously elaborate and seemed to go on forever.
Honestly surprised that there hasn't been at least a comic book crossover between The Real Ghostbusters & the Filmation Ghost Busters. Feels like it'd make for such an obvious story to tell.
I would love to see that happen someday. Can't be any worse than the last GB flick Frozen Empire.

Was always a fan of this version of Ghostbusters. Prime Evil is an under rated villain.
I really liked the episode where the ghostbusters had to team up with Prime Evil to stop Big Evil
Prime Evil was VERY underrated
Yes! Prime Evil is an awesome villain
Both Ghostbusters shows are awesome because I was born in that decade, 4, seeing both cartoons and wanna be a
Ghostbuster busting ghosts. Great vid, Secret Galaxy.
I like how the Ghostbusters animated series is a sequel in real time from the original, so Kong and Spenser are succeeded by their sons Kong Jr. and Spenser Jr. but Tracy the Gorilla is just himself because I guess he never ages
The person in the Gorilla-suit changed, but who cares about them?
It’s the 1980’s and with several different cable companies around, literally going one town over could reveal channels you didn’t get at home or your favorite shows coming on at different times.
I’m spending the weekend at my older brother’s place and playing different games with my nephew (who was more like my little brother).
I decided I wanted to play Ghostbusters, and he says “Okay, who gets to be the gorilla?”
I look at him like he’s crazy and say “There’s no gorillas in Ghostbusters.” And after about a half hour of me trying to teach him how to be Egon to my Ray, we gave up.
I'm actually quite fond of the 1970's theme. "We're the Ghooooostbusters!" Plus they had a gorilla. And Larry Storch. All sung in "Surround-Storch."
I had the exact same reaction as a kid, like "what is this? Is it an offshoot? Why is there a gorilla?" Very bizarre situation
5:45 ...Hell of a coincidence! I recently subscribed to CerealgeekTV just a few days ago! That channel is a wonderful treasure trove of privied information.
"It's Christmas Day and the kids are watching X-rated movies! I'm really mad."
🤣🤣🤣
How did I not know this? This is gold! I mean yeah ghostbusters v The Real Ghostbusters, I mean the dodgy 1989 vhs video cassette story! This should be common knowledge! Thanks guys as always for the top notch content! 😊😊😊
I remember catching The Ghost Busters on TV once, and I felt deceived and betrayed by TV Guide. I don’t know how much I actually watched, but I know I didn’t make it through the whole episode before flipping channels
“Bust’n never feels …..confusing?!”
It would be awesome! (unless they use the Filmation version just to mock and insult it... then that would not be awesome.)
Yep. They could be the West Coast Ghostbusters
Dreamworks/Universal owns the show now and Universal is not known for selling off anything.
@@JAbell1966 well shit.
I'm sure Sony and Comcast can come up with some type of deal. Those two companies are on good terms.
Same. I remember when some called the Filmation a "rippoff" even though they were first with that live action show.
Oh, it was super cheesy.
@16:07 Holy crap, that segment had me DYING with laughter. Well done gents.
I think I was too busy being angry about vehicle Voltron replacing lion Voltron to be confused or upset about the dueling Ghostbusters cartoons.
The buggy had to have been one of the hands-down, raddest toys of the 80’s.
I remember as a kid watching TV, the announcer would say Ghostbusters is coming up next, so I'd stay tuned. When that Ghostbusters logo appeared, I would be SO disappointed! I'll never forget that feeling.
I(52) vividly remember this as a kid. Yeah, I was confused, but now I had two new cartoons to watch. Nothing but WIN.
Squeal Of Fortune also happened to be the name of a Wheel of Fortune parody with pig muppets on Sesame Street.
and probably both involved hands entering from behind
I still remember when I was a kid I saved $49 in mostly pennies to buy The Real Ghostbusters Firehouse playset, I remember the cashier counting out the change and everything.
I thought Toys R Us was "the biggest store Ever." because at the time it was the first place I had been to with the high warehouse ceilings.
😄👍
"They watched it twice"- man, it's a good thing I was in my car while watching this as I was literally laughing out loud.🤣
Between people texting on the can, and people watching videos while driving; WTF is your malfunction, people?
I was like "what is this..." I could never get into it.
talk about crossing the streams, filmattion vhs did a "BUSTIN' makes me feel gooood!!!!" 😂
It seems like, according to some sites, that later reprints removed them.
They even had the Female Ghostbusters to troll haters... 😮
@@Dremag_Gamingwow 🤦♀️
It looks like later reprints mightve replaced them when I went to look about this.
For me, Linda Gary will always be the voice of Research Director Maura Cassidy of the Arthur C. Clarke Astronomical Observatory (aka "Starlab") in the 1970s sci-fi radio series _Alien Worlds._
Your editor was on a roll with this episode
I knew all of this and the company Just For Kids having a porno side company. What I didn't know until now is that they "crossed the streams" so to speak. Holy hell, what a blunder.
that's definitely NOT ectoplasm, kids!
I remember being so confused by the Filmation Ghostbusters but I loved it! And I didn't even have the "special bonus" vhs tape!
It was such a "DiC move" to call the derivative Columbia property the "Real" Ghostbusters.
I see what you did there.
I also see what you did there
What you did there. See it, I do.
The funny thing is, as a kid, not knowing about the original Ghostbusters, I assumed the DiC cartoon was called "The Real Ghostbusters" purely to be ironic (what with it being animated).
Thanks for clearing that up! The question from my childhood that I, too, had forgotten!
Dan saying "Because of the p0rn!" had me dying! 🤣🤣 I'm DEFINITELY saving that clip for later...
I. WAS. THERE. 🤘🤘
When all seems lost, there will be heroes like Tracy the Gorilla. He is my rock. Always.
@JoLiKMC Slimer plays with Tracey and stills his hat LOL!🦍🎩👻🚫
6 year old me was VERY unamused when I saw there was a Ghostbusters cartoon and it was this lol
Goddangit, why didn’t I get one of those VHS?!?!
All I got was Tracy 😅
I could tell the difference as a kid, and had several of the toys. The concept of a bunch of supernatural themed He-Man villains was still pretty cool.
This shit was so confusing as a kid.
No 7 year old ANYWHERE knew what it was either!!!
13:05 This is friggin hilarious! 😂😂😂😂
Susan Blu was also Arcee on the Transformers
"QUICKLY PULL OUT" HAD ME DYING 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've seen a toy collecting video featuring those Filmation Ghostbuster toys. They are sweet, especially the house and car.
