    older paints can be made of toxic ingredients that aren’t used any more, like lead, real cadmium, arsenic, depending on how old. Best not to breathe it or to get it on your skin too much, just to be careful.

    That looked like mold on top of a lot of those pans. I would sterilize the brushes you used before you use them on any other palettes or you could transfer mold spores into them.

    I think you can restore the small one yourself!
    1. Soak tray in vinegar for a couple days to loosen the rust.
    2. Sand off the rusty spots and loose paint
    3. Spray inside and out with spray paint.
    4. drop a few drops of isopropyl alcohol on top of the pans, to kill the mold.
    5. With a cloth, rub the grime off the sides of the pans and the crust on top of the pigment blocks.
    6. Then drop water on the pigment blocks to soak a bit and try again!

    So apparently the Winsor and Newton Scholastic set is from the 1960s, about that time. I searched on google and my dad told me he used a similar set around 1965. Jag älskar din Skånska 🇸🇪

    Watercolors can mold. And the rusty set looks like there is a lot of mold. I probably would have used a household sponge to scrub and clean the set before starting. I would fear for my new watercolor sets, that I transfer mold spores with my brushes from the old to a new watercolor set.

    the "layer" on top might be that the colors were not light-fast. So the top bleached.
    The shape of the older set looks a bit like the Royal talens half pans so maybe thats a lead?
    Cool video!!

    Many of those old paints are highly toxic. I saw your cat was touching or putting her paw on them. Afterwards, she will clean herself and be exposed to the toxic metals etc. I hope you see this message and keep her well away from them in the future (don't get them on your skin or breath in close to them either).

      shahar fy yes but most of the highly toxic pigments aren’t used nowadays however these might still have some of the toxic pigment. I’d be particularly careful around the yellow and blue tones.

    • @LunaBianca1805
      @LunaBianca1805 4 года назад +4

      I often forget that paints can be toxic :/, especially around watercolours. I mean, those opaque watercolours, that practically everybody had to use in art classes don't carry any security warnings, but the Kuretakes (yeah, I know not classical watercolours as they are defined here in Europe or western countries per se) that I just ordered off Amazon are. Which kinda left me a bit insecure, because I actually never had any paints before where I was warned of their hazardousness and that they may cause cancer o.O. So over-cautious and somewhat paranoid me will probably end up using those only with gloves, in a well-ventilated room and maybe with a mask on. Would be the first time that I'd actually have to take security measures when painting -.-

    • @aartadventure
      @aartadventure 4 года назад +15

      @@LunaBianca1805 Your kuretake paints will be fine unless you eat them or rub them into an open wound. Japanese companies often are very careful to highlight any possible dangers. Chinese manufacturers (where many art supplies are made) typically don't care or bother to warn.

    • @gymnasstick292
      @gymnasstick292 4 года назад +1

      @@syfy666 in old paint they used much toxic paint, and since that paint she's using is old, i think the little box can be from 1850-1900s it could contain very toxic paint. No these days we have replaced most of the very toxic paints with less toxic. But that doesn't mean modern paint is not toxic its just less toxic than before.

  • @tarah.2105

    The white fuzz or spiderweb-looking film on the top of some paints look like they might have been covered in mold. This can happen to old paints or can be dependent on climate; such as humid environments.

    The one and the bigger container is fine. I'm more worried about getting tetanus from the smaller one though. It's way more older and rustier, probably old enough that the paints have lead and arsenic in them. Maybe give them to a museum or something.

I'd forgotten about it till I saw this 😍 I don't know when she got it, but I'm guessing in the 1960's or something like that? As she used to paint when she was younger before getting into all manner of other crafts.

    The rusty container reminds me of my dad's old set. Just the color and shape. It was a Reeves brand and made in England. I don't actually know how old it is, but it was my dad when he was a child so from the early 60's.
    The paint pods are different though - they are in the circle pans and there is only 6. But yeah, it reminded me of It so I thought I'd share.

    the first box looks like a forgotten school set (prob from a designer school or something that was used for a while enough that they added a gold paint and a few others but then it was forgotten)…
    The second one actually doesn't look like a school set but rather a collection from someone that actually had an a unique pallete in mind. (notice how there's very little greens and even reds for that matter) I see a lot of tope-y yellows and browns along with a lot of blues which makes me think it was a portrait or cityscape artist.

    Okay, this may sound and actuall be a stupid idea but... you were speaking of restauration "services" - maybe you could sand some of the paint and get the top layer off? That way you could have a look if the paint inside was still intact Oo I'm a pretty curious person when it comes to stuff like that xD so maybe ts worth a shot? If sanding would be too hard to do, you could also try and just smash the paints with a hammer? xD (okay, this is getting ridiculous, but I mean... it's worth a try for 1 pan? Maybe? x) )

    I have an about 20 years old Schmincke palette. Some are a bit hard to activate since they are thoroughly, hard as rock dried on the top layer, but letting them soak a bit beforehand makes them perfectly usable ♥
    I don't quite remember whether they were professional student, I only remember it was seen as quite the investment by my mother. I guess it's a mix since the colors were all handpicked by my then painting course teacher. Mix of full and half pans, 18 colors in a 24 half pan palette :)

    I didn't think about the ingredients possibly being toxic, but I cringed so much watching this, I got a cramp :P I would have first, taken a dry scrub brush to everything (while wearing a mask) to remove loose spores/dust/rust/etc., steel wool/ Magic Eraser/ sand paper to remove outer layer then sprayed with alcohol and let sit until dry, wiped again with with wet, soapy cloth, spritz heavily with water and add a few drops glycerin to every paint, stick them in a ziploc bag to maintain humidity, and let sit a week or so, checking occasionally to add more water and to make sure no mold growing. I would only use distilled water, btw, to re-humidify. You have really got me wondering what happened to the paints I had as a kid - mom taught art, so I was the only kid in kindergarten with a professional quality water color set lol. Also wondering what happened to my great grandfather's paints - he used to be an illustrator for Chicago newspapers. All in all, an enjoyable video. Hope you are able to find out more about the paints, get them restored, and maybe do a follow up :D

    A very easy and efficient way to clean rust is by putting the rusty thing in a bit of vinegar (just put it in a plastic container and pour vinegar until it covers the object and leave it there. In about an hour you'll just see the rust flakes coming out. ) then you can wipe it clean and coat it with a bit of varnish, to prevent it from getting rusty again.
    of course you can also remove rust with sandpaper, but that is "messier"

    I believe Reeves actually is part of the Winsor & Newton company, actually. That Reeves pan probably wasn't part of the set originally, but it's technically the same brand. These days Reeves is the name on their childrens/craft level supplies, lesser quality than Cotman.

      Jenna Gets Creative , originally Reeves was its own brand and not part of W&N. They were two separate companies that both made professional art materials. Somewhere along the line Reeves lost out and is still trying to make some kind of comeback as a brand, but if it has been bought by W&N that will never happen.

    Hey Kattvalk! If you still have your lineart from your mythical creature collab with baylee jae, I'd love to see how you'd color it! (The picture was sort of a Griffin creature with antlers). It's one of my favorite pieces I've seen you do. Baylee did a great job coloring it but I'd love to see what you would do with it!

    I think some of the paints could be salvaged if you scrape off the top layer! As for restoration, I've done a couple and it's actually easier (and more fun) than you'd think

    I wonder if you could flip the paint squares over and get pigment that way. That is if you can get them out of the squares.

    Someone may have brought this up, but the fact that the paint is in plastic pans instead of metal pans leads me to believe they're not all that old.
