    I have my Grandmothers old oil paint box. Hers is metal and not as deep as your wooden ones but just as heavy. Its nice to look at her old paints and know she did so many paintings with them. I have one of her paintings and also one of my great-grandmother's paintings that I treasure..

    I use a rolling carry on size suitcase to take my things back and forth to class. My couple of tips for you is that I put most of a box of kleenex in a ziploc bag which takes less space than the box or a roll of paper towels.Also a 2 gallon ziploc bag exactly holds a 11 x 15 sheets of wc paper and a 1 gallon holds the next side down so they stay clean going back and forth.

    These boxes are so cool! I just used to use a tool box to bring all my paints and brushes around, and thena clipboard and whatever I was painting on would be separate. This is probably a much more usable solutions n than mine, especially because there’s the panel storage inside your lids!

    Great containers. I'm going to a big warehouse tomorrow so I'll be on the lookout for any of these type boxes. Didn't realize how many supplies I had until I started sorting after watching your storage videos.

    Hi Lindsay! I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your tutorials and what an inspiration you've been to me, and many others, over the last few years! I watch your videos faithfully but never commented until now. (But I ALWAYS give you a thumbs up!😃) I actually have the first box you showed us, it belonged to my dad, and I never thought to use it for watercolor storage! He always used it for oils and acrylics, so that's all I have in it, and because I haven't done a lot with those two mediums lately, it has just been sitting. So now I'm off to my craft room to fill up my dad's box with my watercolor supplies, thanks to you Lindsay! Keep up the awesome work, you are truly a beautiful, caring and very talented person!

    Great video . I have a sketch box (wooden box ) that was given to me when I was going to art school 33 years ago , and it is very much like the first sketch box that you showed us (vintage one ) . Mine also has the grooves in the top , and they are actually there for a pallet that originally came with the box . So if I have a lot of supplies in the bottom compartments , then I would slide the pallet in to the grooves that are furthest inside the lid . If I'm putting a lot of paper or a canvas in the lid , then I would slide the pallet in to the groves that are on the furthest outside part of the lid . It's a pretty cool design , and comes in handy . The pallet holds everything in the top from falling out , and then when the lid closes , it also hold everything in the bottom compartments from moving around .
    I love my sketch box , and they are very handy for taking your supplies to a class or something .
    I love the idea of having art supplies that belonged to someone before . I also have an old pallet that a friend of mine picked up at a yard sale one time , and she gave it to me, and I still use it . Also my first big portfolio case belonged to one of the fine arts professors from my art school , and when she got a new one , she wanted to sell her old one , and my university room mate bought it for me for my birthday , and I still have it , and still use it .
    I really liked this video . It brought back a lot of old memories from when I got some of my supplies :) Thanks so much for posting this :)

    wow....love your boxes...I use a fishing tackle box, one that has those tiers that come up.....holds a ton of stuff! That was a suggestion from an art instructor a number of years back and I've never felt the need to change it, until I see your boxes and then I think, uhm.....wish I had one of those..LOL!
    TFS...always love your stuff!

    You know I smiled at the Bob Ross paint. lol Also I'd want one of those things just to store my craft paper and such. I already have containers and such for my paint and such. Though I would put my paint crushes in the paint box. I really need to find something to put them in. Right now I have mine in desk pencil holders, a make up brush holder and a candle mold along with my colored/sketch pencils in all of those. lol xp

    Love the boxes and tips!! And for you, please use those nice oils!!! I found out last week, when I rediscovered the magic oils, that when I pried open some tubes with pliers, that some were bone dry after a decade!!! I painfully had to toss some Winsor Newton and Grumbacher, not all, but a few!!! Would love to see a video of oils of course :)

    My problem is "out of sight, out of mind" so I gave my cool wood art box to my son for hauling his repair supplies when he goes "control-line flying". (That is the old fashioned kind of balsa model planes that are controlled by wires going to a handle the flyer holds onto in the center of a circle. They do prescribed patterns of flying within certain time limits to win contests and prizes. The control-line planes are being replaced with the radio controlled ones you hear more about.) He can carry spare propellers, wheels, handles and wires in case anything breaks at the last minute. For my paint supplies I have to use the semi-clear Art Bin type boxes. Too bad they don't make them with a configuration like your wooden boxes-I haven't seen a plastic one where the palette can fit inside like your's does. TFS

    Wow I really love your art boxes :) I was wondering if there's a way to convert an art kit into an art box? I have one of those cheap art kits that are for ages 6+ (Darice 80-piece deluxe art set). Now I love the case, it seems like a good quality one, but I'm not a huge fan of the art supplies it came with since half of the supplies are of somewhat decent quality. So I was wondering if you could do a video on converting the carrying case into a art storage box?

  • @clemlank9069

    I think your Pike Box will fit if you remove the box containing your spare tubes of paint, then it would become your inner box. But if you need to carry lots of additional paint tubes I guess this wouldn't work.

      Huckleberry Herbs and Art sheer lazyness really, I hate sitting at the computer and the limited amount of things I make sell quickly enough at the retail space I rent in town and that is easier than listing items, promoting and shipping them, I dislike shipping as much as typing LOL! Of course if nothing sells I am out the rent money for my shop so it is probably more economical to sell online, I am just to lazy LOL! And I like meeting people face to face, it gets me out of the studio once in a while:)

    Lindsay, do you have a video on what a beginner should buy when starting WATERCOLOR painting? I've been doing watercolor painting but with color pencils. Now I'm ready to move on to the tubes of paint - apparently you get brighter colors from tubes as appose to pencils. I would love some info as I am ready to splurge but won't do it until I hear from you. Thanks Lindsay. Love you vids - especially your watercolor tuts at the moment.

    Thank you for this video, I enjoy all of them so much! I have a question that maybe you can help me with, I paint in oils and I've used W & N fast drying medium. For some reason it loses its viscosity and turns dark on me in the bottle. Pretty soon its so thick its unusable. I never make it through a whole bottle before this happens. Seems like it happens in 6 months or less. I'm keeping it in a dark cool place. Thanks for any advice. :-)

    I was just thinking, when you showed the double metal dipping pots that you clip onto the palette, you menioned oil mediums, I've always used Liquin and Linseed oil in mine (and I usually had another pot with turps in it on the palette too). It would be great if you could do a comparison video on the various different oil painting mediums, and what effect they have, like liquin, stand oil, poppy oil, Damar varnish, Cold Pressed Safflower Oil, and mixing your own recipes for various effects. Or have you already done one?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 лет назад

      Fran OnTheEdge I haven't, I just got my long awated acrylic medium video done LOL! I don't feel experienced enough with oil mediums to do a comparison BUT if you order a free Blick catalog they have great descriptions of ever medium, it is very useful:)

      thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich The online version doesn't seem to have that, and I can't afford that much for a paper version. (not free to the UK) but thanks for replying.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 лет назад

      Fran OnTheEdge shoot, maybe you have a supplier in the UK that has a similar free catalog?

    • @FranOnTheEdge
      @FranOnTheEdge 9 лет назад

      thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich How about this Lindsay? Oil painting has much nicer smells than watercolours do, it's more forgiving than watercolours since a mistake can be scraped off and painted over much more successfully than with watercolours.
      You could get more into oil painting, find out what you think of the different mediums, varnishes and background preps and then do a lovely video for all of us oil paint lovers! ROFL! I just like listening to YOUR videos.
      Truth to tell I do go back to oil painting now and then, (and sometimes watercolours & acrylics) but these days I'm concentrating more on Polymer clay and getting into working with metal. I was just curious as to what you thought about Poppy oil, Damar Varnish, Liquin etc etc... but if you don't use them, don't worry about it. Our local art shop sometimes does pay-for classes if I REALLY want to know more about oil mediums. But it wouldn't be the same as one of your videos.

  • @heidicook2395
    @heidicook2395 7 лет назад

    Hi Lindsay, I am curious, normally you use a limited palette of colors when painting, shoo why do you have such big paint palettes?

  • @akartisan1
    @akartisan1 9 лет назад

    forgot, when you get down to the last of your oil and watercolor tubes, there is still a lot of paint in them. I use a box knife and cut across the top under the lid and down the side, then spread it open and either scrape the paint out with a palette knife or just paint out of them. I give them to students s o they try more expensive paints. For acrylic tubes or handcream tubes, I cut the end of the tube off. I'm really stingy and don't like to waste things.Before that, I use one of those tube roller things to get as much as I can out of my paint tubes or h andcream tubes.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 лет назад

      Isaiah Elizarraraz It depends on your budget. Reves are the lowest priced pencils I would recommend and you can get a 36 pack for under $20, Prima makes a nice quality too 12 pencils are about $12 biut there are duplicates between 12 color sets. Staedler makes a fairly affordable set too. I really like all the pencils by Derwent and I recommend getting at least a 24 set if you can afford it (if not go with the reeves 36 set for more bang for your buck) and if you want to get super awesome pencils and price is no object try Albright Druer pencils from Faber CAstell or the Caran d'ache watercolor pencils. Hope that helps. Shop around to find the best price because there is a huge difference from retail to sale prices.
