When I bought my first ever backpacking tent, having no experience, I bought a footprint. I have purchased 2 tents since and did not buy a footprint. I probably experienced more condensation when starting out and using a footprint than without -- not BECAUSE of the footprint, but because of my inexperience. Sometimes gear will not spare you or solve your problems. Care and knowledge can help. By clearing the site of objects that will harm the bottom of the tent, opening vents/doors, orienting tent with wind, and choosing an appropriate site the tent life can be prolonged and condensation reduced. Gear wont allow you to be careless in these respects. I have used that original footprint as a non-essential small tarp a few times (to clarify, I'm not recommending that as a reason to buy one--get a tarp if you want a tarp!). Thanks for the video.
If its muddy I'll use a footprint, which it can be more often than not in the UK 😂 purely so i dont have to clean the bottom of the inner. Id love to see some videos in the future on cleaning and maintenance on the Vern 1 PC with it not having a detachable inner. Thanks for the content 👍
@@DanielOutdoorsIt's interesting that some free standing American tent options describe the set up that OP describes, and I would be interested to hear from someone that uses a tent that way. I had a Big Agnes lynx pass 3 that advertised that set up. The outer tent just lays over the poles (no sleeves). So in order to create structure with the tent poles you need floor grommets, either from the inner tent, or as the OP suggests you would need a footprint with grommets if you were not using an inner tent. To me it's hard to imagine a situation where I would choose this set up as I would compare this to a rather heavy and bulky-to-pack tarp option. But I recall when purchasing that the manufacturer did advertise this footprint-required setup option as a selling point.
And youre about to actually mention an upcoming video on this term too I do bought an american designed tent with a footprint recently just to show the differences. But i still need sometime im pretty busy atm
I have 9 tents and only 1 footprint. I bought a footprint for my Helsport Turtagrø 4camp basicly for having a cleaner vistibule. It’s adding too much weight to the tent to carry along. So I agree, it’s not necessary.

Very smart comment and totally true

Well in Norway we do have the same mud, and wet envioment. So its barely a need. In my guess is that i will never use or will need a Footprint for PC.
You forget the times you don't want an inner and the footprint is needed to assemble the tent.
Never had happen on all the tents i have setup trough out the years.

I will not disagree with that, and totally understand that.
Bjørn Boris is the only man on the planet who need a footprint ;)
I just use a sit mat to enter and exit my Nortent Vern 2.👍
