I run a fleet of them and have very little issues pulling close to 40k fully loaded 6days a week .. Ram just doesn’t have cut it when pulling heavy
Yeah, once ZF comes out with that power line it's all over for the other two. Heck, there's even a chance that it gets an Allison 9 speed that they're going to start making according to TFL.
@@NewTrip_NewAdventure they will be making one at some point, they have announced it, just hasn't started production yet. ZF has 10 speed tranny's? I thought they just had 8 in rwd configurations.
The Dodge is a Cummins HD commercial truck engine and the trans is a commercial HD transmission designed to work with an HD diesel engine. They are not just big pickup truck motors designed to make big numbers, sell trucks and last beyond their warranty periods. For a truck that needs to work every day, perform as expected, last a reasonable amount of time and give a good return on investment Dodge seems to be the clear choice right now. Just my humble 2 cents.... --gary
@@WV_Outdoors I’ve heard those rumors, and I’ve also read that ZF designed an 8 speed transmission directly with Cummins. My money is on a ZF over an Allison for the next gen ram.
@@jorrick66 I'm hoping they go with an Allison. Ram knows Allison is proven and would attract a ton of customers from the other two manufacturers. What does everyone always say their ideal truck would be? "An Allison behind a Cummins" and with the improvements Ram has made to the interior of these trucks as well as all the issues Ford is having with cp4 and death wobble, Ram should have no issues stealing the Ford crowd. That's my thoughts, I'm wanting to get back I to a G56, but now I'm second guessing on if I want to wait for this new auto Transmission. Currently have an 18' tuned and deleted 68rfe which I have no issues out of. Shifts like a dream with the trans tuning from CTT
@@WV_Outdoors I agree, and I hope you’re right. I’d love to see an Allison go in them, I just fear we’re going to be let down. FCA already runs the ZF in Jeep, Challenger, Charger, and the gas 2500 trucks.
@@WV_Outdoors zf is the most reliable transmission in the world. Last year alone they sold over 3 million. Ferrari and a bunch of others use them. I wouldn't be afraid of one especially seeing what the did for the truck 392. Either of the 2 would put more power to the ground than the Japanese Asian 6 speed.
Having had both, including my current 2019 RAM 3500 HO, my observations are that the RAM certainly has a stronger exhaust brake while the Ford has a smoother transmission. The Ford pulls just as hard, RAM has a nicer interior.
It sure does, which makes it faster to 60 miles an hour but once you get set on a hill pulling a heavy load the Cummins digs in and pulls...then it becomes about torque.
I tested a 2020 Ram and was not impressed with the truck but the engine was powerful. The Super-Duty is a way better truck and is equipped with an excellent transmission and decent engine. I’ve got to say this guy was real generous for letting you use his brand new truck hard. It’s like letting your friend use your new woman for a night while you watch in the corner with the lights dimmed. At least Tow Pig’s was a lease. Just sayin not saying.
So if you think about total stopping distance with hot brakes as opposed to nice cool brakes coming down the 6 percent. The seat vacuum factor will be much lower if you encounter the need to stop.
I still haven't figured out why you don't use air bags....airlift loadlifter 7500...the best purchase ever!! No squat...planted to the ground. Sweet ride.
Kenny bates powerstroke yes. Issues in just one yr that have been replaced. Battery, 4 valvestems, ac compressor, cat, exhaust filter, o2 sensors, seatbelts, and panic alarm goes off when you lock doors with key phobe.
Side note, for the Cummins you can actually get a engine brake on top of the exhaust. You have to do it aftermarket but they make it. Cummins has the best engine break of all the semi trucks, personal experience. The old cat had the best pulling power.
Considering a similar Ram to pull our 41' fifth wheel. Our 2008 SRW 3500 would probably pull it fine in our rural, flat, mostly 55mph speed limit home area but we plan on retirement and travel with this 5er and a white knuckle ride definitely takes away from the experience. Better to have too much truck than not enough. The newer ones also have the fifth wheel prep and built in trailer brake and wiring. Enhanced safety features also. Our 2008 has been a great truck and we will probably keep it for lighter chores but definitely shopping in the next few years. That was the comparison I've been wanting to see, a mostly unfiltered honest haul showing both trucks. Subscribed.
Nice Truck!!! I have 2016 3500 with 3.73 gears and the G56. It's about the same color. Its called maximum steel or something. Looks grey but also blue. Mine ain't as fancy as yours but it pulls like a tractor. Enjoy that pretty truck. Man, that thing looks good.
Diamond c gooseneck 12,000 lbs axels Total weight on the trailer and the weight of the trailer, as far as I know, can't be more then 25,900. Unless you have 15,000 lbs axels.
For anyone that has actually towed 25-30k lbs and had inferior braking ability its no joke and can be scary. Ive been in situations where i knew i couldn't stop if someone pulled out in front of me. so for me engine braking is a huge factor, yes the fords pull uphill a little better and for having such a bad ass f350 its kinda a slap in the face that the exhaust brake is a joke. if ford gets that fixed they will be back on top again. These trucks just keep getting better and better.
There is test video of a Ram Cummins with a ZF 8spd, guess they didn't get all the development done prior to the launch of the 2019 HDs. I'd imagine that with the next refresh that the HDs will get the longer cab off the 1/2 tons and we'll see the new transmission with 1100 ft-lbs of torque.
After driving the 2020 ram and the 2020 ford (ended up going with the ford) i can say without a doubt the ford absolutely smokes the ram, its not even close.
I am with u on that when u unhook the trailer like when u test drive them and driving both ford was a lot more fun to drive and the throttle response is not even close
I was thinking the same thing. Looked at the truck at the end of the video and I thought to myself well gee golly that thing was squatting maybe 6" (hard to tell on video). Ultimately though it was very close to level while hooked up to a large amount of weight so can't ask for more than that. I'm a proud '20 2500 Denali owner but all these people arguing over trucks is silly...this man is showing us his true experience and IMO it's amazing what all of these pick ups can do
If you use the brakes, every horsepower needed to slow is the same as 750 watts. My guess is that Ford was only making about 100 horsepower of exhaust brake. So 90 horsepower had to be provided by the brakes. 67500 watts. The equivalent of 45 electric frying pans.
Ya they have differnet gear ratios and stuff but that only matters if your compairing engine to engine, when you compair truck to truck not engine to engine then it really matters
I noticed they’re still putting those crappy Nexen tires on there. I got about 22,000 off the front left and 28 off the front right. The front left de laminated and I have a bubble on the inside of the tread which led to a funny vibration at speed and I only discovered the actual problem when I lifted the truck up spun the tire and saw that it was out of round.. on the rear Dooleys which made it to about 33,000 passenger side outer rear developed a flat spot and could not figure any clue why except that I did it all a fairly have a camper that was 600 pounds heavier on that side. We put Michelin‘s on there and all is good
Rumors are that Dodge is talking to Allison about a 9 speed. Also heard ZF or maybe just keeping Aisin. Aisin have been amazing and have heard that they’re just as good if not better then Allison in this style of truck.
2021 ram is up to 1075 tq now to go back to the lead. Next yr they are putting looking at allison or an all new zf. The allison is supposed to be 9 speed I think.
My son and I test drove a RAM 3500 crew cab dually diesel with 3.73 gears, it pulls like a tractor. I currently tow 9k - 10.5k pounds si exhaust brake on RAM or Ford should be fine. I am looking for a single rear wheel one ton diesel to pull my toy hauler
I personally think they are both good trucks. I owned a 7.3 Ford and loved that truck. I have always been a mopar fan, my first car was a Dodge. I have a Dodge Dually now that looks similar to yours. The only thing I don’t care for is how they heat up on the temp gauge going up the hill, the main reason I bought the 2010 is Ford had a lot of issues with their new engine at that time, the new trucks have proven theirselves. The Dodge does have a recall right now for their low oil pressure on start up, they have a fix for it, but how much damage has been done by the time it’s fixed? I am not sure which way I will go. I did like the comparison. Thanks and great comparison!
My truck specifically has not had that recall, spoken with other techs and the pump is not ECM controlled when the motor is on it’s pumping oil into the motor, haven’t seen any engine failure on other pages or discussions.
I battle my 2017 ram 3500 with the exhaust brake. It doesnt bite and refuses to downshift when towing. The 2018 ram 3500 bites and will throw you through the windshield. Both at 68RFE. The 18 has 3.73s think the 17 has 3.42s. Either way, i noticed the differences and prefer my 18 over 17.
Nice truck and nice video. Would love to see a new dmax just for comparison sakes. I have a hard time going with any of the new ones after having my 6.7 Cummins swapped super duty. Just need an exhaust brake to be a perfect setup.
Thank you for sharing. I am new to your channel. Can you advise me please. I will be towing a 20 ft. goose neck trailer, hauling pickup trucks 1/2 to 1 ton.I have narrowed it down to load trail, Diamond C, and PJ. and maybe Shure track. Do you have any suggestions? I live in Missouri and don't mind driving to pick up the trailer I will be purchasing a rebuilt truck from Powerstroke help.
The 2020 Fords are farily weird. They are soild daily drivers, and a quick. They drive like a tuned 6.7 truck. The 10 speed changes the game with transmission. But they get the same mileage as the 6 speed Dodges. It still comes down to the platform, the new aluminum duty trucks look nice, but they have some solid issues. The 5th gen dodge trucks are nice but they need to fully upgrade the truck. 8/9 speed and the new 1500 cab. I might trade up from my 4th gen if they do that.
I have both a F250 and F350 dually with same everything except gear ratio. Lower gears in dually make a huge difference in how ex brake works. Cummins is nice, but if comparing you need to try a Ford dually to get a true comparison. Would go up the hill faster also with lower gearing. Enjoy your content!
I honestly think it’s a very fair comparison, I might of had lower gears in my truck but the ford had 4 more gears to work with in its transmission. Ford should have had an advantage over my truck regardless however after what we did it still didn’t.
I am a ford guy but ford does alot of goofy things as far as packaging cab and chassis f450 f550 can't get a pickup bed unless custom made and down grade in hp and torque cab to axle is 56" for pickup trucks but cab and chassis is 60" gearing is all over the place as far as tow ratings go also can range 40k down to 32k depending on axle ratio so if you want the perfect truck your probably going to have to order
This was sick! 🔥👌🏼 Yo, what should I keep an eye on for the longevity of my truck & trailer? Like the crucial things, everytime. I'm a hotshoter. (beginner)
The 5th Gen Ram Cummins trucks are outstanding, I own a 2019 Ram 2500 Cummins and it feels like it’ll walk over an F-250 ferd all day long towing. They stay cool, they tow with less rpm’s the exhaust brake is outstanding, Ram has the strongest exhaust break of all the HD pick ups. They have the best lights, so night time towing is effortless. Only thing I wish I could get with the 2500 is the new HO with the Aisian, I feel like the 68RFE should be a 6.4L Hemi transmission only, and give all the Cummins trucks the Aisian, with both SO and HO options, as well as leaf spring optioned 2500’s. But all in all still an awesome towing monster. I wanted a 3500 single rear wheel with leaf springs, and HO, and Aisian in an 8 ft bed, but after thinking about my needs over my wants, 2500 short bed was the way I had to go, still no complaints other than all the emissions Bull crap, but ima fix that in a hurry on mine I live in a state with no emission checks so it’s gonna get opened up to breath soon.
I have had my 2019 Duramax dually since October of 2019. Pulling a 40ft big Tex hotshoting. I have yet to run into a Ford or Ram(FIAT) that could pass me on any hill. Maybe I've just been lucky, who knows. Really enjoyed the video, but until you test a Duramax, don't knock it. You might be surprised.
The only thing going for the RAM is the Cummins turbo diesel, which they don't even make. And they definitely need a transmission with more than 6 gears...both Ford and Chevy offer 10 speed now. Purely from an engine perspective I would choose the Cummins over both Powerstroke or Duramax. But in terms of the whole package and engineering competency, I gotta give it to the Ford. Then Chevy. Then we have the FCA Dodge. But as long as they keep selling a truck with an engine they don't even make, I'll be happy.
RD I thought the same thing about to lack of gears but after driving both. I could care less about the new 10 speed. The 6 speed aisin in a 2020 truck rips. No complaints
Great comparison man. Any way you could do a further in depth video about why you chose the hydraulic dovetail on your Diamond C rather than a full tilt deck over?
I think this is a good comparison video, but I think comparing the 3500 to an F-450 would have been a bit fairer as the F-450 is Ford's king of towing and the 3500 is RAM's.
I use an 18 speed manual all day every day at 130,000 pounds, and I cook my food with both hands while driving down the road. I would never own an automatic transmission in my life, especially if I'm pulling something
Apology accepted welcome back to RAM family

I run a fleet of them and have very little issues pulling close to 40k fully loaded 6days a week ..
Ram just doesn’t have cut it when pulling heavy
that was a gas truck that shit don't count
Q put my 6.7 powerstroke against any Cummins you got just make sure you stud yours first since them Cummins blow head gaskets like a 6.0 now
Simon freeman yea the new 6.7 with the 10 speed will out pull anything
Dodge I mean Ram just needs to design a heavy duty version of the zf 8 spd.
zf is a good transmission because Ram or FCA didn't design it
Yeah, once ZF comes out with that power line it's all over for the other two. Heck, there's even a chance that it gets an Allison 9 speed that they're going to start making according to TFL.
Yo Dawg Ram is working on signing a deal with either ZF or Allison in the coming future rumor says they're leaning towards ZF
Ethan Legler Fords 6R line was all based off the zfh line
--gary
Just imagine how even more glorious it would be if they’d put an 8 or 10 speed in it
Not if, but when. They are supposedly putting a Allison in the next gen
FCA already runs the ZF in Jeep,
Challenger, Charger, and the gas 2500 trucks.
Hope I dont regret buying a new f350 for my hotshot business. I'm Scaling 16k on the trailer and registered at 38k.
Love this Video,GOD BLESS Y'ALL
So eager for my new Cummins after that.
Wish I could afford that new Cummins
I'm still stuck in 2nd gen
Having had both, including my current 2019 RAM 3500 HO, my observations are that the RAM certainly has a stronger exhaust brake while the Ford has a smoother transmission. The Ford pulls just as hard, RAM has a nicer interior.
ford has way more horsepower
It sure does, which makes it faster to 60 miles an hour but once you get set on a hill pulling a heavy load the Cummins digs in and pulls...then it becomes about torque.
Cummins pulls harder for longer time!! 💪💪
Glad you finally got to see what the 2020 is capable of. I knew you would be satisfied.
Sweet ride.
lol I have air bags on all my trucks
@@VBELTandSON awesome! I must have missed that video. I've watched most of them!
This was good video to watch. I plan on trading in my 2019 f350 for 2020 ram 3500 soon.
You might as well wait a year for ZF to finish their medium duty transmission (think its a 8 speed) that will likely end up in the 2022 Ram.
I would wait until 21-22. I bet they restyle and update the trans. Just get a used 19 to hold you over.
Id like to wait just cant make it more than a few days without something breaking and it going back to dealer.
Is it a powerstroke ? What issues are you having with it?
Kenny bates powerstroke yes. Issues in just one yr that have been replaced. Battery, 4 valvestems, ac compressor, cat, exhaust filter, o2 sensors, seatbelts, and panic alarm goes off when you lock doors with key phobe.
Side note, for the Cummins you can actually get a engine brake on top of the exhaust. You have to do it aftermarket but they make it. Cummins has the best engine break of all the semi trucks, personal experience. The old cat had the best pulling power.
I have one on my 5500
Considering a similar Ram to pull our 41' fifth wheel. Subscribed.
Awesome video. I'm a big fan of the mighty Ram. Thanks for sharing.
Didn't know the new rams come with anti wrap leaf springs, thats awesome. My 18 with the factory air has them, but not like this truck.
They are a beef set up. They even upped the rear differential to a AAM 12
Planed to buy 2021 3500, I have a bunch of miles on trucks that requires CDL. RAM specs impressive
Great video 👍
My boy austin did what...? Come on sam now we NEED to know. Get him on here
Nice Truck!!! I have 2016 3500 with 3.73 gears and the G56. It's about the same color. Its called maximum steel or something. Looks grey but also blue. Mine ain't as fancy as yours but it pulls like a tractor. Enjoy that pretty truck. Man, that thing looks good.
Dodge/ Ram should pay you royalties man, I bought my 2021 Ram 3500 because of your videos 😂😂
Hahah that would be fricken awesome if they did! Hope you love the truck!
Diamond c gooseneck 12,000 lbs axels
Total weight on the trailer and the weight of the trailer, as far as I know, can't be more then 25,900. Unless you have 15,000 lbs axels.
Weight distribution is applied here. And you can have a 30k trailer with 12k axles. Prorate is aloud +25%
Rate the Ford and Ram in 5 categories- power, handling, ride quality, braking, mpg. Only one winner per category. Who wins more categories?
Ford gets power and mpg rest is dodge
There is test video of a Ram Cummins with a ZF 8spd, guess they didn't get all the development done prior to the launch of the 2019 HDs. I'd imagine that with the next refresh that the HDs will get the longer cab off the 1/2 tons and we'll see the new transmission with 1100 ft-lbs of torque.
And you did it with 25% less cylinders.
After driving the 2020 ram and the 2020 ford (ended up going with the ford) i can say without a doubt the ford absolutely smokes the ram, its not even close.
Empty yeah but towing seemed pretty close
I am with u on that when u unhook the trailer like when u test drive them and driving both ford was a lot more fun to drive and the throttle response is not even close
Just cant go wrong with a Cummins and the Aisin trans, those things really hold up to abuse well.
Awesome review! You got to line up a GM test for curiosity.
Not knocking the truck but it was very obviously squatting! Sam is kinda like me he's as ram biased as I am Ford biased! At least almost! Lol
I was thinking the same thing. Looked at the truck at the end of the video and I thought to myself well gee golly that thing was squatting maybe 6" (hard to tell on video). Ultimately though it was very close to level while hooked up to a large amount of weight so can't ask for more than that. I'm a proud '20 2500 Denali owner but all these people arguing over trucks is silly...this man is showing us his true experience and IMO it's amazing what all of these pick ups can do
It looked like the whole Bed was squatting
Even if it’s squatting it’s 31k lbs, can’t be too upset with some squat that’s what overload springs are fpr
Bradford Nielsen the whole bed looked like it was twisting tho
If you use the brakes, every horsepower needed to slow is the same as 750 watts. My guess is that Ford was only making about 100 horsepower of exhaust brake. So 90 horsepower had to be provided by the brakes. 67500 watts. The equivalent of 45 electric frying pans.
Wow, now that's what I'm talking about I love to see these dodge ram tow heavy like that, I'm picking up a 2022 dodge ram CCLB diesel.
Ya they have differnet gear ratios and stuff but that only matters if your compairing engine to engine, when you compair truck to truck not engine to engine then it really matters
Cummins is a great engine!
At first I thought you had boughten a new truck... I was damn...... But can't beat a Dodge..... And once again so close to my house
My little bro kicking ass and taking names! Lemme know next time you’re in Idaho, we’ll do some more tests up in the desert 💪
They need to team up with Spicer and create a 6 × 4 transmission. That would be cool !! Twin stick Cumm3
Nice truck. Now you need to test a gm. haha
Dang, sweet setup.
Monster tow rig. I have a 2001 Cummings and obviously I can't do anything like that.
I’ve got a 01 24v also. She has fun pulling 14-15k lol my 3500 makes that weight a joke now
Nice truck and nice video.
Very nice truck 👍, monster on trailer 👌
Gotta test a duramax on that stretch. Just to know what they all do
You buy
More trucks than anyone I’ve seen in along time man
Watch untamed motors he buys everything
Get the new ram 5500, add a few go fast parts, have a few parts fall off, and you'll be set
Ram has a wider frame is why you felt the difference in stability.
Even better reason to go with the dodge
This was sick! 🔥👌🏼 Yo, what should I keep an eye on for the longevity of my truck & trailer? Like the crucial things, everytime. I'm a hotshoter. (beginner)
Do you pre trips every time you hit the road. One day it will save you. Print out a list online and check everything.
That Ram is a nice truck. I just dont trust the transmissions in them.
The aisin has proved to be a very good transmission
That would be my choice if I had the budget. Thinking of trying to find another truck myself but used. Be looking for a Dodge truck again.
Lol. My 20 ford makes my 23 duramax look pathetic
I'm looking at buying this exact truck against a 3500 chassis with a dumpbed.
Sorry, stumbled on this video and enjoyed it. Do these guys need a Commercial Class A CDL because of the weight and length?
Cdl class a is required for the weight
Great comparison man.
Any way you could do a further in depth video about why you chose the hydraulic dovetail on your Diamond C rather than a full tilt deck over?
DiamondC doesn't make a full tilt
offroadinginaz still would like to hear Sam’s opinion on why he went dovetail instead of tilt, brand irrelevant
I think this is a good comparison video, but I think comparing the 3500 to an F-450 would have been a bit fairer as the F-450 is Ford's king of towing and the 3500 is RAM's.
All fords even the 450 suffer from weak exhaust brake. And 3500vs350 as fair as it gets
Great color! I have the same but 2019
Maybe you can find someone with a 2020 Duramax dually to see how it compares to the Ram and Ford. I’d be interested to see how it would do.
If someone reached out with a truck to try I’d definitely give it a shot
I use an 18 speed manual all day every day at 130,000 pounds, and I cook my food with both hands while driving down the road. I would never own an automatic transmission in my life, especially if I'm pulling something
How old are you?
For a second I thought you were gonna unzip the trucks tailgate and go to work.
I’ll leave that to you ford guys. Lol
