Rory is so critical about the cars he reviews. I love it. Nobody else in the business really says their opinion about the car, but Rory gives some real, fair and justified advice.
In terms of looks, that statement sums it very nicely 0:36. For me, the A5 has always been a head turner. The designers of the car really nailed it, even with all the previous generations
The designer of the original A5 said it was his masterpiece. The design after 2016 I think is awful. Gone is the elegance of simplicity. It no longer has flowing lines.
I purchased an A5, I think it's amazing if I listened to this guy, I most probably wouldn't by it, it's a wonderful car if you really want one don't listen to this guy and go for a test drive. I love my Audi A5 and it performed excellent on the motorway, I don't know what this guy talking about
I'll pass on this one. The pre face lift was nicer to look at, the engine changes on these are sad. Definitely this a5 is a posers car. All looks, no soul
This is a brilliant review of the A5. I have a 2018 TFSI which has the 190bhp engine. What the reviewer says about the engine edchoed what an Audi salesman said when comparing the A4 40TFSI against the 35TFSI. The former being much better. The eviewer is absolutely correct about the rear seating. It's difficult both getting in the rear as well as exiting from the rear. Nice car to drive but I wouldn't buy another; mainly because of the lack of usefulness of the rear seats. Better buy a Sportback so you get 2 extra doors.
For that driving thrill that some people seek, the S5 is a good bet. Still smooth, still comfortable and refined, but with a decent engine note and driving dynamics to make you smile.
I bought 2008 A5 coupe, absolute beauty. Lots of people look at it and talk when i drive around with it, maybe bit too much for my taste lol, i wasn't expecting that much.
Agree with Rory about the car q competent, reasonably practical, safe and hopefully good looking. I think this offers a great deal in its segment. If you want thrills and pay the money the 2021 RS5 Sportback is a great car, its ferociously quick and still fights well, with its competitors, even though its at the end of its model life. The shape has endured because its pretty much perfect and copied by many including the 4 series coupe which still hasn't pulled it off imo.
That is Audis latest MMi system. The dual screen is the same system with the climate controls switched to a screen. A3, Q3 etc all have this one screen system which is far superior. Also, this is a facelift hence it still has the original controls
Serious question; how are 4 seat 2 door coupes legal? To get out in an emergency in a 4 door car, you just open your door and get out. In a 2 door coupe in the back seat, you have to wait for the front passenger to get out and open the seat before you can leave. In an emergency those seconds could mean you don’t escape a fire. I love 2 door coups. I accept the lack of practicality for the better styling. That being said, you would think that by now that governments would have jumped on them
European viewers might be interested to know that you can't even get the watered-down versions of most Audi's in American. It is sold as a more luxury brand here. For instance, the 35 and 40 A5 Coupe FWD does not exist here, only the 45 Quattro.
For that amount amount of money you can get so much better, more involving cars, like a GTI, a WRX, even base model Mustang (correct me if I´m wrong) Though for people who don´t really care about cars but still want to look wealthy, this is a worthy option.
I just don't understand the point in reviewing a coupe, and then complaining about the fact it only has 2 doors. ??? I bought my A5 coupe for the styling and rarely need to use the read seats. Love it and will buy again.
I have owned both BMW420 and Audi A5 cabriolet Sline special edition. The Audi wins by a mile in everything. Handling, looks, performance, comfort level,..etc. The Audi has more sophisticated looks about and its aim for a sophisticated people where as BMW are tacky for petrol heads and the uncouth.
Nice review direct to the point, specially when the talks about road noise, something unacceptable for a premium car, for this I discarded the BMW series.
"Allegedly seats four". That line killed me 🤣🤣🤣. Rory i keep saying you're on a league of your own. On another note I really don't understand the design of these 3 German coupes (C Class, 4 series & A5). Big bodies but no rear passenger space at all - worse in the C Class. I currently drive a Kia Cerato Koup (Forte Koup in other countries) but the rear leg & head room is quite generous. I'm 5 foot 11 but with the driver seat in my driving position I seat comfortably in the rear seat on long distances. I can't lie though, I'm aiming to get one of these German coupes. I love them.
Well coupes are supposed to be smaller versions of sedans so I'm not sure why you're surprised about the lack of rear space. Think about it, if you really shuffle people in the back a lot you're going to go 4-door without the shadow of a doubt. Big body does mean you've got more room in the front too though, which is kinda the point.
As many nice details as Audis have these days, there's too many dealbreakers (wont list because too long). I thought their last gen cars were much more solid choices. There's so many dealbreakers in every car across the range that I would rather take either the BMW or Merc depending on which car we're talking about. It is such a shame because we KNOW Audi knows how to build an amazing car. It feels like VW is kneecapping Audi to keep Porsche the really premium range. I think Merc and BMW are one tiny slot below Porsche, but Audi is like five big and unnecessary paces behind even Merc and BM across the board. In a world where the new gen Mercedes and BMW are pretty much perfect, and either is a fine choice depending on your personal taste, plus we're seeing more competition from cadillac, genesiss (+stinger), I think Audis should be a lot more compelling.
Largely agreed, I'm just not sure if they're keeping Audi lower down to make Porsche look premium. It rather looks like they're trying to make VW seem more premium, when in reality all they've managed is to sabotage Audi. I ain't gonna shit myself and say that A7s or A8s aren't nice cars, but boy does everything below the A6 absolutely scream of cost cutting. Meanwhile VW is trying to charge more for the same thing. Feels like the dieselgate fine is catching up to them.
I have A5 3.0 Tdi Quattro s Tronic, looks great and fairly nippy being 245bhp, this is a great all rounder car with a little grit under the bonnet should you want it 😃
Couldn’t agree more with that. I got one on lease as it was cheap in December, but I’ve realised I need more. I’ve just had to order a Porsche. Nice looking car and good tech, but massively lacking driver involvement.
Good review, don't know why they got rid of the 3.Od. great engine but now its only on the S5 which is a lot more money not fair for the normal punters. Not everyone can afford the S4
Audi seats do not adjust low to the chassis like a BMW. Mercedes come close, but Porsche are the best IMO... But, for absolute comfort, I think any car manufacturer would be hard pressed to beat Volvo's electric, heated, ventilated massage seats. Oh, and in case you were wondering I prefer knobs in cars too, but you get used to the touch screens and soon build your muscle memory to locations of heating and ventilation.

That’s the only good thing about the car.
Rory, in plain spoken terms.. you are a man of benevolent words. The one and only, as far as I am concerned. You literally have no competition.
