    When I was little my dad (who was a 30 year marine) used to love to watch Gomer Pyle. He would laugh which was notable because he was always a serious man.
    I used to run around the house screaming "Citizen Arrest, Citizen Arrest" which drove my mom crazy. Thank god for reruns of The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. which I still enjoy today.

    Sylacauga, Alabama, is still a sleepy, little town but people there and in all of Alabama are still proud of the fact that Jim Nabors had such a great career in show business. He was a huge talent. The Andy Griffith Show and all of its characters are still favorites here and always will be.

      But

    What a great human being. People have no idea how much of his time and money that he donated back to different communities. That's because Jim gave without making a production out of it. I grew up in the late 50s and the 60s; during a time when social views were very different than the world we now live in. The world would be a much better place if we all treated others with the respect and kindness that he showed.

    • @ronaldmayle1823
      @ronaldmayle1823 4 года назад +2

      I grew up in the 60s, too. The riots, Vietnam war, blacks riding on the back of buses and assassinations of JFK and others. Where is the respect and kindness you are talking about?

    • @thinkcivil1627
      @thinkcivil1627 4 года назад +6

      @@ronaldmayle1823 I grew up in a small town (3,000 people). No one locked their doors and neighbors watched over each other. I have good memories of growing up in that atmosphere. Today, I live in a large city and when I go back to my home town, it is a different atmosphere and is much different. The growing up in a small town are the memories I was talking about. Yes, all of those things you mentioned happened and it's a sad chapter in history. But, why stop there? Go back a little further to Korea, WWII, the Great Depression, WWI, the Civil War, slavery, displacement of Native Americans, the fight to become independent as a country, etc. Society is constantly changing and the hope is that we learn from it and grow. You have 2 choices: Learn from it and become a better person (which means you can still find joy in life and good memories), or you can stay angry about the ugly things that happened throughout history. People who stay in the injustices of the past, instead of seeing progress in society, will remain angry and not allow the nation to learn and heal. We've elected a black president, along with other strides in the right direction in society. You can help educate people, or you can stay bitter. It's your choice. As Dr Martin Luther King Jr said: "Anger only tears down and destroys".

      @ronaldmayle1823 4 года назад +4

      @@thinkcivil1627 I agree, but so many people have a romanticized memory of the past. Today, we have 24 hours 7 days a week of news so the networks and cable have to invent "news." Now it seems like more is happening then long ago when we only had news once a day. I served in the military in the 60s, and I saw hate first hand. People are the same in every generation. The good and the bad, and there are a lot more good people in this world than bad. We just notice the bad more.

    • @thinkcivil1627
      @thinkcivil1627 4 года назад +4

      @@ronaldmayle1823 I agree. Back when we were kids, there were 3 TV networks and the news was professionally broadcast as it happened and without an agenda. Now, there are so many channels and the news is 24/7, with a format that is more like a political talk show. The news has become so sensationalized and biased (both ways) that I stopped watching all network television. Nice talking to you. Take care.

When he came out on stage my little nephew stood up on his chair and pounded on my mom's shoulder and yelled with excitement,' "Gramma, Gramma, Look ... It's Gomer Pyle". Everyone laughed including Jim Nabors. He is the very best and I have loved him forever.

I was a young teen and enjoyed entertaining my school friends, my parents friends! It was fun laughing! I finally grew up, and probably Gomer is the only one I could try out now.
