    New warm up! The focus is on coordination of airflow and tonal onset with special dispensation for vowel alignment. Five main vowels used in singing instruction are covered as well as tons of work in the zona di passaggio ending ultimately with an endurance exercise that goes over the secondo passaggio (the break.)
    Enjoy!

    This is honestly my new favourite set of warm up exercises. I’ve used for my last few gigs and it’s really effective. I love the range: super low but also over the break. I only wish there was one or two more exercises that went right through the secundo passagio. But that’s just me being nit picky. Thank you, Jeff!

      Wonderful to hear, Mandy! Thank you! To be honest, as I got into tracking these I thought I ought to have done one or two more that went over the secondo passaggio, but I'll have to do that in the next set of warm up!
      Thanks!!

      Jeff Rolka I think it was the exercise before the we-we-we-we, the octave trill. I just couldn't remember what vowel sounds I was making when. But I'm sure on the 2nd go-round I'll get it. Memory is important! IT WAS TONS OF FUN THO.

    • @MandyCummins
      @MandyCummins 7 лет назад +1

      Ann C I’m totally with you! I see it as an octave up to a “crest” and there are five “crests” each “crest is a vowel sound and after the fifth “crest” it’s all the way back down the octave scale again. Almost like a long incline, five little humps and back down an incline again. I sort of visualize it like that, like im driving on a a cartoon through mountains or something (haha!) and if really helps!

    The eeeeeayyyyyahhhhhohhhhooooo part at around 16:20 I always have trouble getting the high notes, does this mean I should be lower than an alto or just that I only need more work on them?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  5 лет назад +2

      Hard to say without hearing you but if you're not modifying the 'i' (from the IPA - sounds like 'eee') vowel it would be too narrow as you ascend making singing it difficult indeed!

    this is really helpful. thankyou so much in making this video! i want to ask some tips to avoid lacking of breathe and to crack voice when hitting higher notes although i can hit high notes it's just that sometimes i can't hit it right. and im frustrated about it. so faaaar this one is already save to my folder "watch it again it's worth it"

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  6 лет назад +1

      If you're inconsistent in your zona di passaggio or upper register then there are imbalances in how you're configuring you airflow and vocal fold engagement. This video will provide some practice in that, but there are plenty more in the high note technique playlist. Best, Jeff

      That's a video that does a lot of the usual scale patterns slowly but increasing in speed gradually.

    Thanks so much Jeff, these are incredible! For the eeaayyaahhohoo part at 16:20, should we be going over the break into falsetto, or is the purpose to make the chest voice more comfortable with going to that high of a note?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 года назад +1

      I always advise honoring the registration events, but it does depend on what you mean by 'falsetto' as to how I would recommend singing it. That term is unfortunately used differently amongst teachers and singers alike. Also, our goals may be different. I am always wanting to achieve voce piena in testa in my practice. If that is not your goal, then you may choose to sing these differently for perfectly legitimate reasons.
      Best,
      Jeff

      @@JeffRolka Thanks for the response Jeff! I'm a rock singer who wants to improve my "power vocals" but in a healthy way. I think in that case, I'll try to sing chest voice all the way up as long as I don't hurt myself.

  • @LoisGillespie
    @LoisGillespie 6 лет назад +3

    Fun warm up, however I get very little articulation at the speed you're playing :-(

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  6 лет назад

      Give a little thought, if I may, to a little additional engagement during those exercises. More consistent overall engagement will result in a more agile articulate sound making the tonal onsets more expedient.
      Best!

    I could no longer hit the lowest note of this, does this mean that i am not an alto???

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 года назад +1

      My videos cover nearly all of the range of a given fach, so you could still be an alto, but not have all the low notes. Also, it's normal to lose a note or two on the bottom once your voice is warmed up. As the tissues get more blood flow and get ready for action they tend to stiffen ever so slightly.
      All the best! Thank you for watching!
      Jeff

    Hey, are we altos supposed to be singing an octave above you (and the piano)?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 года назад

      With the piano, sometimes an octave above me, sometimes not. I mention it when I demonstrate something down an octave. Either way, though, unison with the piano.

      Jeff

    What can you recommend if your voice gives out in the secundo passagio? I already have some trouble in my lower vocal break but it’s manageable with mixing and practice (probably a tension issue). When I get to the secundo passagio however, I continue singing and no sound comes out. I call myself an alto because I tend to be a belter singer, but I know that I have a potential wide range and a whistle register as I’ve reached it in warm ups with my teacher when I was very relaxed.

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  5 лет назад +1

      Based upon what you've said in your comment, you're quite likely carrying too much weight on the thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice to allow for any elogation and cricothyroid dominant singing at or above the secondo passaggio. In plain speak - you say you tend to be a belt singer - in order to do that you have to increase breath energy as well as vocal fold engagement. That will limit your overall range. Backing off and learning to allow for vocal fold elongation (cricothyroid dominant singing) will then allow you to sing over the secondo passaggio.
      Best!
      Jeff

      Ugh, my hair! So glad I've chopped it off. So divided! On the one hand, I feel like I need to model neutral facial expressions during phonations, at the same time, when I clicked the time stamp, it looked like I was going to be sick! That was me ramping up my engagement to make sure I was phonating properly.
