The only thing I dislike about Halle Bailey’s Ariel is the shade of red they chose for her, because the movie is so dark and dull, it causes her hair to look like it blends into her skin. And it ruins the point why they chose the iconic red in the first place, it was a nice complementary color with the blue and green backgrounds and it still maintained a nice color in the dark scenes.
@@RobertK1993 the original story didn’t have any animal friends either. And the other girl who the prince falls in love was another princess, not the sea witch.
@@RobertK1993 Lol in the original novel Ariel feels incredible pain every step she takes as a human. She also turns to sea foam at the end. As for her colour, that is dependant on the illustrators. I’ve seen many renditions over the years and not all of them white either. 🤷🏼♀️ Plus expecting Disney of all companies to be true to the original is like expecting book nerds not to complain about adaptations lol It’s fucking Disney my guy. They’re not exactly known to be accurate to anything they’re adapting for screen. There’s a reason why we say “Disney Version” after all
The thing is these remakes generally make more money than original ideas. If you want to consider the Lion King remake animated then it's the highest grossing animated movie in history.
Disney demographic targets grew up, younger people don't really care about long movies, I have Disney and they are always making new animations then cancel the shows because nobody is watching it, my little ones don't even bother to look at the tv they get bored and just go straight to RUclips. As for movies, encanto per example became big because adults watched it,not kids. So they are following their targets to make money, they are playing the nostalgia card because we will want to go watch it.
@@danielgudinojuarez6729 Yeah and that movie had like zero color, it made Neverland look like Netherland. The Little Mermaid 2023 is also pretty dark in several scenes but at least there was quite a bit of color in shallower water scenes and in the Under the Sea sequence. But in Peter Pan and Wendy? Practically zero color.
As much as I had fun with the remake, I would not watch it again and just forget about it weeks later and go back to admiring the 1989 movie either way.
Sorry to have to say this, but in the original film, Ariel's main focus wasn't Eric, but his amazing world she wanted to explore, and the reason she made a pact with the witch was because of her overprotective and all-evil father's cruel behavior. So I can't say that this movie is just about romance, but also about letting your kid go his own way.
I hate that this argument is being used at the og now that the reboot is out. And it’s not even true! That’s why I’m rewatching the animated movie before seeing the remakes
Yeah even the original animated series and comics went more into this, she was curious about all humans , even the ones who built crazy machines to go under water
@@VademecumPopkultury You should, there’s a recurring mafia lobster in it voiced by Joe Alaskey and a manta ray voiced by Tim Curry that tries to make everyone evil, it truly is something
The only thing I hated that they missed was the whole wedding scene with the witch…and Ursula’s part where she’s laughing at the mirror but she had a catchy song I would’ve loved to hear…”soon I’ll have that little mermaid and the ocean will be mine” it was so minimal but it was really like the cherry on top for that scene
My biggest complaint is how visually DARK everything is, there are shadows EVERYWHERE, the colours are muted, and when I CAN see what's going on, I'm bored. I personally wish everyone had been CGI, like Tangled.
I know this was a while ago, but personally? The muted tones contrasting against the vibrance of the sea and the cultural sections was quite wonderful to see and appreciate as someone who works in the arts. Animation tends to be much more colorful because it's animation, therefore stylized, but the artistic direction for color was phenomenal in my opinion. Well contrasted, and well orchestrated to fit every shot. But I can understand the contention.
That rant about the people who discuss about Ariel's "woke" casting was needed. Thank you for telling those idiots to shut up and get a real life. Also I 100% agree that those RUclipsrs should be punished in some way since saying those things just don't fly at all on this platform. Also, I watched this movie as well and I was also surprised that it came out decent. But that Scuttlebutt song is one of the worst things I've ever heard in my life. Saying all of this has made me realize that this whole movie has been an nightmare when it comes to online discussions.
But lets be real here, Disney does this "woke" recasting cause they think that's the only way to be "progressive" and "diverse" while trying to hide all the shit they commit in other fields just like Blizzard. If you do your research, you'll understand.
@NQProductions I agree 💯. It's so goddamn stupid and headache inducing, it makes me question what the hell happened to these people that made them so stupid. Was there a tragedy that happened to you in the past? Furthermore, why do you even care? You're an adult. Act like it and get a life. An actual life where you care about things that no rational human being wouldn't. Man, do I envy my dad and grandma's generation. I believe we all love both versions of "The Little Mermaid" so much that Jodi Benson and Halle Bailey became best friends in production life at Disney for fun hope and fun dreams like a mashup
I honestly don't care about Disney remakes anymore and honestly the last one I truly saw was The Lion King and that made me angry to the point I almost had a stroke. And no I'm not unhappy about Ariel being a different color I honestly like it so I can tell the difference between the animated mermaid and the live-action mermaid.
As someone who has never been biggest fan of these Disney live-action remakes, but this one was not that bad. Not great movie, but its enjoyable movie. Great review Animat and take care and stay safe 👍.
Oh, ESPECIALLY the Lion King remake, for sure. Did you know that that movie actually ranked #1 on the highest grossing animated films of all time list? I'm not sure if it was beat out by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it did beat out Frozen, though.
Thank you for standing up against these people who has an obsession with the woke term. People keep telling me *iT's hOlLyWoOds fAUlt tHeY mAkE thEiR mOviEs wOkE oN pUrPoSe* but woke is not a vaild criticism at all. I've even heard RK Outpost called Across the Spider-Verse woke just because Gwen's room has a political background I forgot what it was but it was trying to promote an "agenda" (I saw the movie and I did not notice it at all). As for the movie itself, I honestly have no interest in seeing it in theaters mainly because of my Disney remake fatigue. I'll probably watch it on Disney+ with an open mind.
What's more, Ariel's sisters are all different races too. Including ANOTHER black mermaid who've even *darker* than Ariel! I'm a little surprised they aren't going on about Triton being a himbo who's been spawning all over the place with a bunch of baby-mamas. 🤣
How come with white washing, everyone calls it racist but with black washing is acceptable and everyone who speaks against it is labeled racist? Because it's a racist double standard. People freak out when an asian or black character is turned white but don't seem to care about white characters are turned black or a different race. Do people really hate white people that bad?
As a person of color myself, I have no problem with a black Ariel. My only small problem I had was the hair color. The animated hair stood out from the other Disney princesses with her fiery and vibrant hair. I can see that they went for a natural look for Halle, but it doesn’t stand out to me. It’s like they had an Ariel costume, but forgot the hair
I also disliked the shade of red they chose for her. Halle Bailey has a lovely skin tone. I would have picked a rich dark red, like a red rose or a red wine color.
They used 3 different reds mixed with a single blonde. I think it's perfect, but totally get that everyone is going to have their "perfect" red they want for her. It's all preference.
There are many people are genuinely welcome wanting to see any type of personal ethnicity in media, but the main takeaway that instead of a more new OC character being brought in rather than switching them out for representation when it’s really not the case, as since Animat has pointed out it’s not really anything new if it was already played by different actresses from same/different regions before. Why not tell the story different and genuine like the character Gabriella whose Deaf and Hispanic wanting to learn to be a singer, which was a really interesting story in the little mermaid show.
I liked it too but I'll never get why some people including my parent will say something like " Why go see that silly cartoon movie by yourself now when you can wait for it to come out on streaming?" When they want to go rush out and see a live action remake based a better animated film they grew up on is hypocritical.
I saw the short about the different nationalities playing Ariel and that was a good point. Halle (another non-white actor) being casted as Ariel is no different so, the hate and controversy surrounding this is downright absurd.
@@c0mpu73rguy Its pretty redundant to just call these people racist, when they have much more nuances to them. They usually are also sexist, as well as homophobic and transphobic and many of them whould prefer a white christian theocracy.
Look I have to bring this up. It wasn’t the fact that Ariel was black that got people on the right mad. It was Disney’s intent with it. The only reason they casted her in the role was because they wanted to be diverse. That’s it. They have been clear for a few years now that that’s all they care about. Halle Bailey’s performance is great and I have no problem with her in the role and she did it Justice. It’s all about the intent by Disney. Disney would never do this but imagine making Tiana white (no they’re gonna have her be Mexican) It just doesn’t feel right. With every other live action remake, the actors chosen for their respective leads matched the ethnicity of the character. It just comes across as incredibly lazy way to get black representation into their films. When you stray so far from the original look, people are gonna notice.
Disney always does stuff like this with the intent to piss people off. They want to cause a quote unquote "racist backlash" just like how companies have been doing for the past 5 years due to the unhinged activist they have working for them.
I agree with you. But a bunch of people don’t care about double standards when their against white people because according to the media your privileged if your white and oppressed if your literally anything else. When society sees you as a victim based on nothing but your identity (in this case skin color) these sorts of things that would be called out as racist if the roles were reversed are suddenly okay. Race-swapping white characters isn’t the only double standard either.
Also another thing I didn’t bring up. A ton of black people on the right don’t like the casting either for the same reason I do so that’s another point against his argument. And also I love that every single buzzword was used. And the clips of the most hated conservative men when women also hate the race swap.
Ok but even if they did just hire Halle because of diversity that still doesn’t excuse the racist hate that she got since it was announced she was going to play Ariel. That just sounds like an excuse and it’s not really true because I remember when the news about her casting came out and the #Not My Ariel thing happened with people losing their minds over nothing. Halle’s casting whether it was for diversity points or because she was actually talented isn’t and hasn’t harmed anyone. Ariel’s race is irrelevant to the story and the criticism over her casting was stupid. They casted a talented singer and actress who clearly put her all into the role like any other actor would.
@@PeterGriffin11Oh lord. You’re a grown adult in your feelings over a live action Disney remake. Like y’all are only making his point that he made in the video. There are actual problems in the world and I promise you this isn’t one of them.
I’ve posted my thoughts and feelings on this remake on Twitter, so i’ll keep it somewhat short. I DO however have a message to those who are both LOVERS of the original animated masterpiece AND have become fans of this remake-and it is this. “I truly hope we can see these films not competing with each other but standing together side by side with their own renditions. I love both of them-for different reasons of course-and the 2 movies together just reinforce the notion why I enjoy Disney’s take of the classic fairy tale SO MUCH.” (Now gimme the 4k blu ray of the remake and I’m all set!) 1989 film-story, animation and characters-10; songs-9; overall score 9.5/10 and animat’s seal of approval 2023 film-story-6.5, visuals-7, chartacters-7, songs-8, overall score 7/10 Also, no joke, the initial reveal of the final battle in IMAX got me TEARY-EYED. (Yeah, original final battle is arguably one of the best Disney final battles. The scope, the stakes, the dialogue and THE ANIMATION?!)
7:40-11:54 Thank you! I had heard about people complaining about the casting of Ariel in this remake, but I never had an issue with it. I never understood why so many got so worked up over something that, at the end of the day, is pretty minor. Besides, shouldn’t an actor (or actress in this case) be judged by how well they act the part, rather than the color of their skin?
Yeah, unless the story is race centri, for a film like The Little Mermaid, you don't think about skin color or race in the first place, scratch that, that shouldn't be a problem.
Just saying, you should look into more about what they criticize about it. It was more then just the race recase. Which, lets be honest, happens to much these days its not even unique anymore.
@@m.syauqiabdurahman2798 The film didn't even need to be race centric cause the original book had nothing to do with race. At this point, you should've just made a new movie instead of trying to apply something to a popular book that didn't fit in the first place.
Finally a reviewer, who isn’t afraid to admit the remake isn’t horrible. I have watched so many reviews and waaaay too many of them talk like they haven’t watched it, or been paying attention while watching. Picking at things and saying they didn’t make sense, while those things were quite obvious, if you paid attention. It’s like people are afraid of admitting they perhaps were wrong and afraid of not following the mashes and bash on it. People wanna see negative things and watch reviewers tear it to pieces! Personally, I actually think I like this more than the original and several of my friends agree. Solely for the reason, that the remake has put much more time into the bonding, chemistry and relationship between Eric and Ariel. Also that Eric has been fleshed out muuuch more. I didn’t really care for the romance and relationship between Ariel and Eric in the original, but the remake made me like the characters and actually care about the romance.
In Mulan , The Little Mermaid , Pinnochio and Peter Pan in the Remakes version The protagonist is portrayed for being too OP Its like eliminating the element of struggle which crucial for the hero of the story development and makes the audience even more sympathetic with their development , You Can't make a good story with a Hero that have no flaw
They did yet another peter panz. 😮 i liked the one with the blonde kid. I forget his name. As annoying as some of the scenes were, it was a pretty ok movie.
So as someone who either dislikes or outright hates the remakes besides Cinderella, I gotta admit, I really enjoyed this (minus a few glaring issues). I'll even admit that if someone asked me to, I'd go and watch it in theaters again.
Well the cartoon reviewing community (of which AniMat is part of, I think) is actually very sane for a RUclips community, especially compared to communities like the anti-woke. Let's remember that the low level of toxicity on the community is what basically saved it when the whole Cosmodore thing happened.

I actually loved the new songs wild uncharted waters because of Eric's amazing singing voice and For the First Time. I think pretty much everyone hates Scuttlebutt
Though I'm a little surprised they didn't use some of the songs from the Broadway version to help. Those are pretty good (or at least decent) Lord knows I would've preferred "Human Stuff" or "Positovity" over "The Scuttlebutt"... (though Awkafina still might've butchered them😐 )
Amazing voice? Amazing voice?? I think you mean amazing autotune. Actually scratch that, offensive and horrible autotune that was so blatantly obvious.
Honestly for me this one is a 5/10. Not one of the worst of the worst of the live action remakes, but definitely not one of the better ones either. Btw, from 8:06 - 11:39 this is the same way I feel about the controversies behind The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
I have mixed feelings about this film. Certainly one of the better remakes, but not entirely enjoyable, at least for my taste. I heavily disagree about McCarthy being a great take on Ursula. Perhaps it’s just me, but I felt like she was trying more to mimic Pat Carroll’s performance from the original, and less likely to put a more unique spin on the sea witch. Personally I think she would’ve made a better Scuttle given how laid back his personality is and how McCarthy’s previous roles fits with that. I do love Bailey as Ariel, and certainly appreciated the Rant you gave about how irrelevant the color of a fish is to suckers like Ben Shapiro
I went to see the remake last week, and I thought it was ok. Definitely not as good as the original, but it was still ok. I give praise to most of the actors for their takes on these classic characters, especially Halle Bailey as Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Eric. Bailey, especially, did a fantastic job singing Part of Your World. It almost reminded me of Idina Menzel's singing when she did Elsa in the Frozen films. Some of the other characters, I also enjoyed, like Grimsby and Ursula. That said, though, I wasn't a fan of the designs of Flounder, Sebastian and Scuttle, and I felt some of the musical numbers could've been better. I especially did NOT like the ScuttleButt song at all. In fact, I remember when it came up, I was literally asking myself "why is this happening? Why are we getting a rap song in this Little Mermaid film? Do we need this? I don't think so." Also, thank you for calling out those anti-woke idiots who criticized the casting choice for Ariel. That was awesome and much needed! Also, Chef Louis, I know you're a powerful force in animation, but man, I wish you came back in the remake. You were psychotic, but you were still really funny in your own twisted way!
I feel as though the actors that were physically on screen had a better performance, the actors who only provided their voices were held back by the atrocious hyperrealistic designs.
So as a person of color, what bothers me about Ariel being black isnt that shes black its that its lazy representation. What could have been an opportunity to make substanive original representation, just feels like kind of a hand me down. Like they couldnt make an orignal character with lore that could be something interesting and the start of something new, so they just made her black. Im not saying Bailey is bad. Im saying her casting reeks of cheap corporate progressivism that doesnt actually do anything to further positive attitudes towards POC especially in an age of increasing hostility and divisivness. Tiana being an orignal character will always be more meaningful that a live action recast of an existing character. And whats worse is Disney can do this and simply chooses not. Also they did my boy Daveed wrong.
I’m honestly glad you’re distancing yourself from these racist because those racist don’t even care about filmmaking just their politics, companies nowadays seems they put diversity first instead of a decent or appealing story or more original characters I wish we had more of that.
I personally did enjoy watching the The Little Mermaid overall but I can’t say that I really like or love the movie overall. What I did like was Halle Bailey’s performance as Ariel, she’s fantastic and has a great singing voice. I also liked the entire cast and I love the production design and the world building. What I didn’t like was the overall runtime because it was way too long when compared to the original animation movie, did not like any of the new songs, especially Awkafina’s song “Scuttle Butt”. And finally I did not like the CGI or visual effects in the movie overall, especially when animated the sea creature characters. The movie had the same $250 million production budget as Avatar 2, but Avatar’s visuals are WAY better visuals. Where did that money went to? It’s obvious that it didn’t went to the visual effects department! My rating is a 6.5 out of 10.
It just looks lifeless and soulless and it’s a moneygrab. Lacks the beauty of the original classic from 1989, the cgi looks shitty and some things just don’t translate to live action
The arguments about Halle Bailey being Ariel isn’t about racism, it’s the fact that Disney is trying to appeal to multiple demographics by race swapping. The same thing is happened with Cleopatra from the Netflix documentary and many people are just as mad about that too for precisely the right and same reason why people are upset of Halle Bailey as Ariel….They are pointlessly changing history. Do you know what Disney movie had a black main character that people were happy about? The Princess and the frog. because of the location and modern setting it absolutely made sense why the main lead was black, and because the story has never been told before by Disney there was no race swapping anger towards it. Enough said
Don’t loop the mess that is the Cleopatra documentary in with the Little Mermaids casting decision. That’s a whole separate conversation. And may I ask how the little mermaid being casted as non-white is “changing history”?
@@confusedgrapes349 because Disney made the little mermaid 33 years ago. Since they ran out of ideas they’re just taking what they’ve made in the past and literally change it. If this was going to be a straight up new interpretation of the story then Halle Bailey being cast as Ariel wouldn’t of mattered. However, because this is a remake of what Disney did before changing your characters makes absolutely no sense. Remember Pete’s Dragon? It was a story about a little boy that ran away from horrible hillbillies that bought him and became friends with a animated dragon they got in misadventures in a town and helped Mickey Rooney by lighting the lighthouse fire. A live action remake was made a few years ago but the story was completely changed and I like the fact that they took the story in a different direction, that’s what needed to happen with the little mermaid if they were going to completely change the main character.
@@jacechretin4597 Mermaid are fictonal though they have never been portrayed as a certain race because well they don’t exist. If you heard how the auditions went it was that Halle showed up and auditioned first and out of all the other auditions they felt like she did it the best. Ariel could have been anyone Asian, Native, or of course white. Her race is never mentioned making it just talent casting.
@@confusedgrapes349 that may be true and I agree that Halle Bailey‘s singing is good, however this isn’t the first time Disney try to remake the little mermaid and live action. Years ago they tried a live action remake with Elle Fanning and they wanted to make the story darker where Ariel dies at the end just like the original story, it’s unclear why they abandoned that idea but it would’ve been so much more interesting telling the story rather than hearing Aquafina sing the worst added in song in Disney history. I can’t wait to see how DreamWorks’ “fuck you Disney” film Ruby Gillman teenage kraken turns out.
I agree. To add another layer, I would say the movie is pretty inconsistent, too many things don't make sense, and too me, this is a big big flaw. Whatever movie it is, I don't like when the director's choices don't feel genuine and break the flow of the story, especially if it's supposedly a remake of a beloved movie. If Disney retold the story and made it different enough, like many remakes do, I wouldn't mind seeing any ethnicity as the main character. But nowadays most Disney remakes are lazy and uninspired. I genuinely think Maleficent was interesting, because it was a well-crafted story (though the second movie was not). And I appreciate the Jungle Book, the world they created was pretty realistic and the CGI was so good! And they made some interesting changes, for example with King Lou, he was so impressive!
I’m very happy that you stood up to those anti-woke people and call them out for their attacks on the film. It’s really needed because those people need to shut their mouth.
@toontasticjuju2479 You can't talk to these people in a rational way. It's pointless. I don't mean to sound cynical, but you're better off avoiding these clowns as if they were a combination of COVID and the killer STD from the movie It Follows.
While I’m sure Halle Bailey is a wonderful, talented actress, she isn’t right for the role of Ariel, and saying that does not make me racist. Would you want Tiana’s actress in the Princess and the Frog to be Caucasian, or would you saying she shouldn’t be white be racist? And aren’t the same people who are upset about us the same people who are upset about the casting of Nani in the upcoming live action Lilo and Stitch film, saying she’s not “dark enough” to play her?
Hey guys here’s my opinion! 1. I don’t understand the lack of the costumes. To me the costumes are bland and much much different from the beautiful, bright dresses Ariel wore in the original film. 2. I would not say this is the best film. Personally, I do not think that some of disneys remakes were bad. For example, Cinderella was one of my favorites, and the dress was gorgeouss. 3. The CGI. The cgi in this film was umm… interesting. 4. Ok y’all have heard this a lot but I think they should’ve stuck with the original characters look and accent. This applies for a lot of characters. And Halle Bailey is definitely stunning, but I think Disney should stick with the original movie. The original character’s look that everyone knows, and it also brings back that sense of childhood. Disney should’ve made their own unique African American princess, not change a princess that has influenced young children in their childhood. Just my opinion thanks for reading!
I have a great conflict with the last part myself. Personally? Taking the movie at face value, I absolutely love and adore the culture shown, and Ariel's actress is absolutely gorgeous, and has an amazing voice. I am not black, but I am POC, and because I overall was raised in a pretty racially diverse community, actually frequently being with my black friends and being close to this day with them and their families, it's very personal to me in that sense. However, while I hate the argument that people have for being the film, or Ariel particularly being "inaccurate" and not having her be a white ginger girl or girl with dyed hair, as it typically falls into racism from what I've read... I feel for the now represented race here, being black and brown people, shoved into this remake rather than given their own princess movie, such as Princess and the Frog. But then I have another point to make against that. Little girls will see Ariel and connect to her, then either the same or other little girls will see the new Ariel's depiction, and then others will connect to her. I think that's great. Children don't think too much about the "issues" of such a thing. They may ask why she looks different, but that can simply be explained as "They chose to depict a different culture to reach more children here", or however else. I think most girls will understand that. The only ones who will be upset is the now adults who have seen the little mermaid as a child, now seeing this one, and have hatred for change. It's a difficult situation. As I said though, all of that could be solved if they did just make a new original princess, as you also said, rather than do this remake. It is frustrating in that sense. I would have loved to see them truly explore various different cultures of black and brown people, rather than fit them into an already established story and film. On the first few points you made. Personally, I enjoyed the character design and costume design a lot. I enjoy more rustic fantasy and medieval plots, especially grimdark, with a more realistic tone also onto the fantasy aspects. Obviously this is not grimdark or dark fantasy medieval in the slightest, but I love how they depicted the mermaids and how the sea contrasted in color to the more muted but, again, rustic nature of the humans. That itself has beauty in my eyes. Typically I can't help but roll my eyes when the depictions are too modern costume based, like a gown that would not make sense in the already established setting / time, which is based in reality, with the difference being the mermaids and such. But, to each their own of course. I tend to enjoy Disney's films which explore other established characters more and therefore make something new and original. Funny enough, this was the only remake I enjoyed the watching experience of deeply. Otherwise, Maleficent and Cruella are still my top favorites, as I also am more privy to the edgier villain types, but being shown to be more realistic or having a twist on the typical "Villain is evil for no or silly reason" trope. The CGI... I liked Scuttle a lot. And Sebastian a good bit. The more pretty scenes like the jellyfish during Seb's song were very beautiful. Otherwise? Flounder, and those damn turtles. I know we can do better... That fish's eyes may haunt me. Anyways, so sorry for the rant. Just felt like adding on to this. Very valid points though!
As someone who has recently seen the 2023 adaptation, I can honestly say that it was actually good, after the most recent reimagined films of Pinocchio and Peter Pan. The soundtrack was well done, most of the actors did an amazing job, especially Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy. The film wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t terrible either. I did enjoy this film, one of the better reimagined films. P.S: Chef Louie being cut was a misfire.
As a fan of The Little Mermaid... I'm not a fan of this version. But I admitted that Halle Bailey is a good singer. I just wish she was expressive enough and acted better. Melissa McCarthy did good as Ursula, but not so great. And since she's Ariel's aunt in this universe, I was thinking either Roz Ryan or Octavia Spencer would play her. Hell, or even guys like Ken Page or James Monroe Iglehart. Prince Eric is bland and boring (even though they told us they would make him better than his animated counterpart). King Triton is even worse, especially since there are too many questions to ask about his (clearing my throat)... marriage. However, Ariel's animal buddies are no better either. Aside the nightmarish designs, Awkwafina's Scuttle is the one I hate the most since Sisu from Raya and the Last Dragon. And don't get me started on the Scuttlebutt song. Speaking of songs, the rest is okay. And finally, the scenery looks hollow, but no worse than Peter Pan and Wendy.
I do hope haille Bailey can get better film roles in the future and not just be known for “I was in a live action remake to an iconic Disney movie that divided the public”….defend this movie all you want but you can’t deny that it DID in fact divide the community!
@@hunterolaughlin Kate McKinnon would be Ursula's sister, that girl Laylay would be Melody, john molaney & josh gad as tip & dash, and ron pearlman as undertow.

You can dislike the film without being racist towards Halle Bailey. Personally, even if they cast a white girl to play Ariel, the remake would still be awful.
Halle Bailey has received nearly universal praise for her turn as the aquatic princess. The film has been well received by the majority of people in audiences (some even going back for more a second and third time); so those who have not even seen it, and/or just want to bash this enchanting tale that has captivated the hearts for generations, need to face the reality that it deserves being a hit even landed the Number 1 spot during the holiday weekend…and still going strong with ticket sells.
@@RobertK1993 No it's not lol. Their audiences aren't overlapping. It's beating Spider-Verse in Italy, it only dropped by -4% in the UK & Ireland, and it's holding very strong against Spider-Verse domestically. Word of mouth for TLM is very good.
@@digitalbritt2k Also losing to Across the spiderverse wouldn't even be a disgrace, its the long awaited sequel for the movie that made Miles Morales a true fan favorite.

You clearly haven't seen Matt Walsh's video on The Little Mermaid. All you say was his joke that was taken out of context, and that's it. If you're going to criticize a person's video at least be strong enough to watch the entire thing.
@@thewiseadamo9105 That's what I thought. I mean I like his reviews, and have been watching them for years, but whenever he opens his mouth about politics it's quite clear he doesn't know what he's talking about. The same goes with MovieBob.
Well I will say this: This is a little better than god awful Mulan. I guess that’s because this is pretty much the same thing just like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Lion King, while Mulan was just completely bastardized and stupid. You know maybe if Mulan was just the same thing like these four, maybe people would've actually liked it.
Mulan was a weird case because it ended up so much like a super westernized version of what white people think Wuxia movies are, with the whole magic subplot going against the whole point of the original movie. Also the removal of General Shang was such a case of corporate feminism missing the mark and not understanding the audience it tries to please. The Mulan and Shang romance is generally popular and positively received by feminist and queer fans, because it is build on Shang admiring Mulans abilities and the whole implications of him starting to crush on her while she is crossdressing made him a Bisexual Icon. Like, just remake the thing, cast a dreamy actor with a great singing voice for Shang and let him do a rendition of I'll make a man out of you and everyone would have been happy.
On the topic of the casting of Halle Bailey: If you for some reason need lore to justify the presence of a POC in a movie, there kinda is here? As a Swede of Danish descent who's spent a lot of time in Denmark, I can assure you the 1989 movie rarely if ever takes inspiration from the source material's country of origin in terms of setting. The setting is very much Caribbean-themed, with some Greco-Roman elements thrown in for flavor. And as it happens, during H. C. Andersen's lifetime, the US Virgin Islands were a Danish colony. With that in mind, I think an Afro-Caribbean Ariel is an interesting take on the character! This tie to real life history isn't needed to justify the casting, but it's just simple and fun attention to detail
That would be a decent argument if the original the didn't have an animated crab speak with a fake Jamaican accent (while reenacting stereotypes) and didn't incorporate so much Caribbean culture in their most memorable musical number.
A) change of the race wasn’t done because they care about the lore or the book. It was done in order to check some diversity boxes B) if you have created an iconic design then there’s 0 reason why they changed it. Are you telling me that there isn’t a single white young actress than can also sing? (Remember halle isn’t even a proper actress.she has like what? 3 mediocre movies under her belt so far?) C) Disney never cared about the lore. Throughout history, Walt Disney changed stories in order to sell tickets and entertain children and the team did that too. The changes they did to the story and stories they adapted were chosen in order to sell tickets and entertain. Now tell me how the new design of the Ariel is entertaining if it has created a huge backlash among the community? They could’ve chosen a cast that actually looked like the original animated version and there wouldn’t be this much controversy. But nowadays Disney has chosen controversy over entertainment. That’s why their movies are big flops back to back
Even if his newer songs ended up being weaker compared to the late Howard Ashman’s songs, I’m glad Lin Manuel Miranda got to collaborate with his partner Alan Menken and I hope the two can have more collaborations in the future. Plus, at least Lin has stated part of his motivation of getting into music was because of the original Little Mermaid and the original songs by Ashman. So at least his heart was in the right place when writing them… well, maybe except for the “Scuttlebutt song”. And for Halle Bailey, I think this is a good start and a good representation of her talents she has a singer and actress, and even if some criticize it as not great, they should keep in mind this is her first performance in a feature film, so of course it’s not going to be perfect. But hopefully this opens the doors for her to get other performances in films and grow by experience. Also love your rant on the racist trolls for hating Halle Bailey just for her skin color. I think I’ll use that as well against any racist trolls that harass Awkwafina for her performance in this remake as they did to another Asian actress with Kelly Marie Tran for her performance in The Last Jedi and recently with Moses Ingram for her performance in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Ironically, Ellen Ripley was supposed to be a man. Funny how no one complains about Ellen’s gender change, but Ellen’s race changing is what would get people upset.
Halle Bailey not doing more physical acting is probably more of a direction issue. I don't assume she wasn't performing as directed. Also, that much movement in live action would look pretty wild. It's better suited for animation.
A review that talks about the remake with positive feelings and thought it's fine? Finally! Just like most Disney Remakes, this one is fine. It has changes I really hated (like Ariel killing Ursula) but has changes that I really love (like Ariel and Eric's romance). Thanks for the review
Melissa McCarthy's Ursula is probably the Best villain we'll get in these Live-Action Remakes. She isn't nerfed in terms of evilness or power, she doesn't have an important trait or item taken away from her. She feels like her original animated version. I'm not saying that makes the movie good, but it's a miracle considering most other Disney Villains feel inferior in these remakes.
The only way Louie would have worked here is if they did the cooking class approach aka Julia Child Several actors regardless of skin gender COULD pull of physical comedy under the guidance of Louie It's what they did in the stage versions AND the most of the CGI animation would have been Sebastain leaping jumping etc
❤️💖 I actually watched and saw the Little Mermaid 🧜🏾♀️ remake at my local AMC movie theater 🎦 🎥. And honestly, it is good. The remake did an improvement over Ariel and Eric's romance. Don't get me wrong, I do loved the original animated film but Ariel's and Eric's relationship but kinda problematic because their relationship felt bit too rushed and Eric doesn't have much personality in the film. Sure he was good looking person and he did do something in the climax. Seriously what the heck would Ariel fall in love with someone who has no personality and she is the age of 16? Ouch. But what else is there for him? Here in the remake, Eric does have personality and the relationship between Ariel and Eric is kinda cute and their romance feels decently paced and it does take time to get to know each other as the two have similar in common. One improvement that the Little Mermaid remake improve than the previous remake is the use of colors and it is very colorful remake. The biggest problem I had with Peter Pan and Wendy it that there is lack of color in the movie and it looks too dull, dark, and very gloomy. Here in the Little Mermaid remake, it looks very colorful and I do loved the use of colors by the underwater sea world 🌎 especially Under the Sea and the village around Prince Eric's 🤴🏻 kingdom. Anyways another improvement the remake did is the setting of Eric's kingdom. In the original film, it was set like a European village. I do admired European setting but in the original film it only last for few seconds and we barely get to know Eric's kingdom and the European setting can gets pretty cliche in fairy tales. Here in the remake it is set on Caribbean setting is a refreshing I do admire the Caribbean setting and seaside residents live there but mixed between black and white people. 😃 The songs are good while the new songs well kinda mixed bag. I do loved Lin Manuel Miranda, but the songs here are kinda weak and they aren't catchy compared to the songs he wrote like Moana, Encanto or Vivo. I find Scuttlebutt kinda pointless. Seriously that song feels like a out of place in a Little Mermaid movie and it feels more like a deleted song from the Rio franchise. Seriously I expected Blu and Jewel encountered a sea gull singing Scuttlebutt! Although I loved the fact that Jodi Benson makes a cute cameo appearance. True, it is nowhere nears the levels of the Jungle Book remake or Cruella but still better improvement than 2022 Pinocchio remake and Peter Pan and Wendy. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
I liked it better than I thought before hand but I prefer the animated one any day being the better version as Ariel is a teenager so it makes sense she'll simp over a guy with no personality being that time we like others for their looks. Better remake than Peter pan and Wendy as that rap number is Lin's Weakest song being honest.
I had similar issues with the original movie, as it seems like both are mainly attracted by each other's beauty and its more a love on first sight. Its heavily focused on looks. Such like Ariel is tending the face from the destroyed statue, in the remake its his hand and she's also talking about Eric's characteristics, such like his kindness and openness. Also the iconic pink dress scene - as popular as it is - is more like a makeover trope, as its shown how it increases Ariel's "attractivity". The Scuttlebutt is not pointless. It feels rather like a little revenge against the original movie, where Scuttle is forced to shut up. And they are aware how terrible it sounds (also Ariel is trying to cover her ears...so,... they're aware of the randomness and that's probably the fun of it (; )
@alexslusher16 Social Justice Warrior is also a term that is misused over and over. If it's wrong to fight for social justice, I don't wanna be right -.-
All I was saying to myself during the film was that Phil LaMarr should’ve been casted as Hermes. This would also bring mainly voice actors into the mainstream as main billings. It happened with the Mario movie with Kevin Michael Richardson. I say we need more of this.
I personally still have no interest in watching it, but I'm happy to hear that it's one of the better live-action remakes. And to all those anti-woke idiots who don't want to watch it just and only because they casted a black actress to play as Ariel, I'm not even going to bother having a conversation with them. I have no patience or tolerance for their racism. Nor should I. I'm glad that you called them out for their stupid takes on the pointless uproar and controversies that they cause for the sole purpose of generating revenue. Sad to say though that this isn't going to shut them up. I wish it would because I'm just so tired of hearing them bitch and moan about things that aren't even an issue in the first place.
7:54 and 11:54 Well it's about time, not only that I agree that those "Anti-Woke" wannabe overlords on YT who act like they're our "Gods" of the Internet should stop with their lousy hatred, but they should also stop taking control of our own opinions too. Especially those 2D Disney movie elitists who tell me I have no right to remain neutral over those Live Action remakes lol. It's like those elitists forget, I wasn't even alive when those classics were made since I was born in 2002 and Pixar was my first introduction to Disney along with Winnie the Pooh,Lilo & Stitch,Pirates of the Carribean, and Jetix/Toon Disney in the 2000's, plus my favorite guilty pleasures in 3D of that year too like Chicken Little,The Wild, and A Christmas Carol.
It was never going to be a white person. They even cast Snow White as a non white person. That's identity politics which is a wholly woke ideology. If it makes you happy to think otherwise by all means keep your head in the sand
You are absolutely right, I don't care much about this movie at all. I stick with the original. Jacob and Melissa were not enough to save the movie. And ai knew this movie was gonna flop on the opening weekend. And not to mention they didn't include my favorite character, Chef Louie.
This remake has its good points to be sure. But I could go the rest of my life without hearing Scuttlebutt again. Seriously Lin Manuel Miranda, what's wrong with you?
I acknowledge that the Scuttlebutt is a bizarre and annoying song that sounds like nails on a chalkboard but for some reason I..... tolerate it? It was clearly MEANT to be annoying anyway cuz Ariel herself was covering her ears with a pillow and then she threw the covers on Scuttle and Sebastian to shut them up. XD
No let’s be honest. It’s bad. They changed so many story plots for no reason and made the usual bad choices that strips the story and made it 💩 like for example why did Ariel Need to forget the most important part of the curse? To kiss the prince. It took away the majority of the urgency. Disney is garbage.
@@BlazeHeartPanther Maybe or maybe it’s just his honest opinion. I don’t like the remake or the double standard with race swapping but I can at least respect people’s opinions if they like the movie as long as their not claiming anyone who hates it is automatically racist.

This remake was AMAZING!!!! I love that they put new changes in the remake such as Scuttle being a female northern gunnet instead of a male seagull and Ariel killing Ursula instead of Eric during the final battle!
Why Don't Disney give a scene where merfolks is having a concert for celebrating Ariel's wedding ? Thats sounds more fun The remakes feel bland and somewhat rushed
"The characters skin colour is irrelevant to who she is" Then why change it? Disney thinks it relevant. Snow White is also non-white. The character who's "skin is white as snow". You guys are hilarious.
They changed it bc she's had the best voice for the role out of the people who auditioned. And she embodied ariel . It wasn't about skin color. That's the whole point. She was the best person for the job , no matter what color her skin happened to be .
I was surprised that this movie is getting some positivity since I was expecting it to be some bad pointless remake. I could agree that Scuttle, Flounder, and Sebastian are a complete downgrade, but I am thinking of giving this remake a shot. It’s obvious that’s it’s not good as the original animated version
Flounder looks like he belongs on a frying pan, LMAO, but at least Sebastian and Scuttle are quite better at emoting than everyone in the Lion King remake. 😅
my thoughts on this remake are kinda skeptical, animat its basically like when disney had tried to remake lion king and as i commented on john campea's channel the other day the more they remake these movies the wrong way it kinda makes the viewer kinda unsettled when they add things that wouldnt be appropiate for the viewer and i actually agree with you : ) the general opinion about these remakes stems back to when most of these remakes started awhile back sure it didnt became a general problem for most viewers But when they started to push for remakes of beauty and the beast , aladdin and lion king that is where you have that "houston, we have a problem" situation of the writers dont have a general idea of what they are doing less of a problem for beauty and the beast and aladdin, more of a problem for lion king cause they had writers that didnt have competant writers, and the cast was a mix , some were good, others were completely NOT in favor of the viewer, the little mermaid original movie worked because it had great animated characters as well as goofy comedy at times, especially the chef this live action film, on the other hand, it does have some good elements, But it lacks the charm of the original which again, shares the recurring problem with most of the other remakes, which is that they dont seem to connect with many viewers and that they have a badly done story a black ariel is ok in this film Alone, But when you have the storytelling done poorly, it has a Negative effect
So despite the cast and crew claiming that the remake is the better film because of its "updates", the excicution in the writing ended up being messy. The romance has improved (I'm not gonna blow a fuse on that), but when it comes to the other updates by "fixing Ariel" by having her "not be defined as a 1 dimentional damsel who needs a man's love", "improving" the story with a modern spin, and "fixing the ending" by having Ariel defeat Ursula instead of Prince Eric, the writing turned out messy. So, it had a messy execution.
The stage show was a much better live action remake. Ariel killing Ursula by smashing the conch shell makes more sense than Ariel driving a ship into Ursula. The new songs were more memorable like “I want the good times back”, “she’s in love”, “beyond my wildest dreams”, and “if only”.
@@beethovensfidelio In the current licensed version of the musical, “I Want the Good Times Back” has been replaced with a new song called “Daddy’s Little Angel”, which gives Ursula a new backstory where she was envious of her elder sisters and her father Poseidon gave her her shell to ease her pain but uses it to kill him and her sisters and takes over the throne until Triton comes of age and overthrows her.
Hi Electric Dragon, I enjoy your Disney reviews. They are very informative and cartoon history is fun and relaxing. That being said, I do think that the social, political and cultural issues surrounding race portrayals in the entertainment industry are more complex than you believe them to be. Look at the whole thing that has been going on with the Netflix Cleopatra. The entire nation of Egypt was, and still is, throwing a fit over it. If you say that race doesn't matter at all and all actors should be able to play any role, then you are getting on the slippery slope of condoning white actors putting on black face or hispanic makeup or slanting their eyes like they did to play characters of any race in the Golden Age of Hollywood. As a fan of Classic Hollywood movies, I have seen that many, many times. There definitely should be room for directors to interpret literary material in the way they see fit, but in this day and age, they will have to consider various cultural sensitivities. As a filmmaker myself, this ongoing debate in the entertainment world is one I follow with interest. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 🙂
If a character’s race is NOT important to the story, then it’s fine to change their race. That’s why it doesn’t make sense for Mulan to be white, but it’s ok for Ariel to be black. Mulan’s Chinese heritage is integral to her story. It wouldn’t make sense for her to be white. Ariel’s whiteness doesn’t impact the plot because she’s a mermaid, and mermaids don’t have a race or ethnicity.
Not only Egyptian I also heard that some Greece people are angry because she was Greece also the thing is Ariel doesn't and never existed in real life while Cleopatra does and is also important for Egyptian
Ariel is a fictional character. On top of that she’s a fictional being altogether. Mermaids don’t exist, my guy. She could be portrayed as purple and still not lose any accuracy. Cleopatra is a real life historical figure. Accuracy is going to be a much higher concern for folks because she actually existed in real life. That’s what happens when you pluck things from the real world. People will expect a certain level of accuracy, even in fictional recreations The only fictional character that is canonically black I can think of (in regards to the West anyway) is Shakespeare’s Othello. And guess what caused controversy? Getting a white actor to portray him in blackface in an otherwise celebrated movie adaption. And that’s a valid criticism, despite the obvious talent of the actor in question. I mean it wasn’t his fault, but that was a very controversial casting choice. One that is criticised even by people in the theatre. So the people crying over Ariel for being black don’t get to hide behind caring about accuracy. She’s a fictional creature, ffs.
Woooooow. "Having a black Ariel makes no difference as the characters skin colour is irrelevant". See this is what I used to believe. I seen many programs and films with black actors and I just saw them as people. Never once listened to a black singer and thought pity they weren't white. But that's the crap that's happening now. You do realise that the actress and people involved in the movie aswel as people involved in wokeness came out and contradicted what I quoted you on? The skin colour matters to them. Having a black Ariel matters to them. The recent go to is that we need a person of our colour on screen so we can see our selves in them. Like what? We're all people man. Can't you see yourself in another person? Go make a new movie with a black heroine if that fussed instead of stealing Ariel and Velma these past few months ffs
Ngl, this is my fav disney live action remake so far. Yes Scuttlebutt maybe weird song, but it is a guilty pleasure to me. I think Rob Marshall and David Magee succedeed at expanding TLM while stays true on what makes The Little Mermaid special. The perfomance is stellar (Especially Halle as Ariel, Go girl, shows that bigots that they're wrong). Yes the vfx maybe a little bit weird, but at least Daveed, Awkwafina, and Jacob makes the animal character passable and even enjoyable.
Scuttlebutt actually works alot better when watching the movie and the kids love it . I wasnt really a fan just listening to the soundtrack . Honestly People actually clapped after that song .
@@XoEclipsEoX I mean i can see why people weirded out by it and tbh me too but i have fun time with the song so yeah it's a bit weird but hey it's Lin Manuel Miranda
I saw the remake yesterday and uh...... yeah it's.... ok? For a remake. Don't get me wrong, the original is still far superior and these Disney remakes have no reason to exist (except Jungle Book, you a great remake), but I dunno, for a Disney remake, TLM 2023 was pretty solid at best, can't put my finger on why tho. I guess it's because many of the other remakes range from mediocre to insultingly bad. Remember how the Lion King remake had the most lifeless, expresionless animals ever put to screen? Well TLM 2023 somewhat fixes that cuz Sebastian and Scuttle can actually emote to a degree, they can smile and everything, I can actually tell what they're feeling unlike the Lion King remake animals. Flounder tho..... nah man, bro looks dead AF, LMAO, he looks...... delicious...... XD
If i were a film maker , I don't want people over praising the diversity side Because i want to be praised for creating a movie that showcase qualitative story telling When people overpraised the diversity side , i don't think people appreciate the story telling aspect of certain movie , theyre just worship ideology and marketing strategy
Speaking of full honesty, I never had any doubts on it, as is coming from the director of Mary Poppins returns and Lin Miranda's contribution is what really gives me a sense of hope this might turn out to be a great film. I really don't mind Haley on the side, at first i didn't think she would be good as another "Pop star celebrity" but just hearing her sing afterwards she is a great and worthy contender to be Ariel.
I saw this in the big screen. I thought it was wonderful film. I’m not saying it’s perfect but I enjoyed it very much even with some flaws. Much like the other remakes of early Disney renaissance films, I think this is the proud definition of a crowd pleaser. Something to give the audiences a good time or to properly relive the magic. I mean, this showed more dedication to nostalgia than Pinocchio (2022), Mulan (2020), and Peter Pan (2023). I’m just saying this to say just be glad we got a new Disney remake where a lots of adults can feel nostalgic regardless of what we think of it. Also, speaking of the Mulan remake, if that one we’re staying faithful the original, I feel that it would’ve give audiences a chance to properly relive the magic Mat, your rage towards anti-woke people is justified!! Other than the stuff you mentioned while talking about this matter, they also don’t even realize that the idea of a black actress playing an iconic Disney princess like Ariel has nothing to do with the movie’s writing (aka the heart and soul of the picture) either! To paraphrase Grace from Avatar, “They need to wake up!” Really goes to show why culture war channels or culture wars in general are worthless, toxic, unhealthy, annoying, stupid, and harmful. Mulan was such a trainwreck. I think the most funny part of the trainwreck is how they removed General Shang in a glowing example of corporate feminism missing the mark, when he is such a feminist and queer fan favorite. All they had to do is just remaking the original in Live action and cast a dreamy hot actor with a good singing voice to make him do a rendition of I'll make a man out of you and it would have been a glowing success.

When they want to go rush out and see a live action remake based a better animated film they grew up on is hypocritical.

That movie remake was terrible
I saw the short about the different nationalities playing Ariel and that was a good point. Halle (another non-white actor) being casted as Ariel is no different so, the hate and controversy surrounding this is downright absurd.
Oh what’s the name of the short
@@loveapureheart “The Women of Color who played Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid”
It’s not absurd for racist people (because let’s face it, that’s what they are).
@@c0mpu73rguy Its pretty redundant to just call these people racist, when they have much more nuances to them. They usually are also sexist, as well as homophobic and transphobic and many of them whould prefer a white christian theocracy.
Listen, anybody with half a brain can see that this was a dumpster fire. And Halle's race has nothing to do with it.

I prefer it to the original
@@loveapureheart why do you prefer it? One aspect I really liked was how they developed the romance.

Agreed.

I think you're one of the only people who haven't been blinded by Disney's charms.

That’s because you can’t shut up and all you do is take those remakes to the extreme
Uh you’re definitely not in minority.
Trust me man, you're not in the minority. It is BAD. Mat's being a shill to protect himself from the outrage he would receive for saying its bad. Lots of people on twitter would like to label you as racist for not liking a film that race swaps its main lead for virtue signaling.
You can dislike the film without being racist towards Halle Bailey.
Personally, even if they cast a white girl to play Ariel, the remake would still be awful.
You're not. There are more of us than you think.
It's a woke flop and your Disney shill shame.on you for lying.😂

@@RobertK1993 No it's not lol. Their audiences aren't overlapping. It's beating Spider-Verse in Italy, it only dropped by -4% in the UK & Ireland, and it's holding very strong against Spider-Verse domestically. Word of mouth for TLM is very good.

Those are actually valid points!
That’s amazing wow 🤍🖤
Blackwashing a character for diversity points instead of creating a original one isn’t interesting 🤦🏾♂️
That would be a decent argument if the original the didn't have an animated crab speak with a fake Jamaican accent (while reenacting stereotypes) and didn't incorporate so much Caribbean culture in their most memorable musical number.
A) change of the race wasn’t done because they care about the lore or the book. It was done in order to check some diversity boxes
B) if you have created an iconic design then there’s 0 reason why they changed it. Are you telling me that there isn’t a single white young actress than can also sing? (Remember halle isn’t even a proper actress.she has like what? 3 mediocre movies under her belt so far?)
C) Disney never cared about the lore.
Oh really? Didn't know that!!
So if Ellen Ripley, Arogorn and Harry Potter got race-swapped for no reason and I got angry, does that make *me* a racist?
Ironically, Ellen Ripley was supposed to be a man.
Funny how no one complains about Ellen’s gender change, but Ellen’s race changing is what would get people upset.
No, it doesn't make you racist. You have every right to be angry.
No cares because Ellen was a great character at the end of the day.

Oooooh your totally on *Disney's* side of things.
And they are aware how terrible it sounds (also Ariel is trying to cover her ears...so,... they're aware of the randomness and that's probably the fun of it (; )
“Sis bird.” Got me dying 😂😂

I especially loved the new song "For The First Time"
"The characters skin colour is irrelevant to who she is"
Then why change it? Disney thinks it relevant. Snow White is also non-white. The character who's "skin is white as snow". You guys are hilarious.
They changed it bc she's had the best voice for the role out of the people who auditioned. And she embodied ariel . It wasn't about skin color. That's the whole point. She was the best person for the job , no matter what color her skin happened to be .

and as i commented on john campea's channel the other day
the more they remake these movies the wrong way
it kinda makes the viewer kinda unsettled when they add things that wouldnt be appropiate for the viewer
and i actually agree with you : )
the general opinion about these remakes stems back to when most of these remakes started awhile back
sure it didnt became a general problem for most viewers
But when they started to push for remakes of beauty and the beast , aladdin and lion king
that is where you have that "houston, we have a problem" situation of the writers dont have a general idea of what they are doing
less of a problem for beauty and the beast and aladdin, more of a problem for lion king cause they had writers that didnt have competant writers, and the cast was a mix , some were good, others were completely NOT in favor of the viewer,
the little mermaid original movie worked because it had great animated characters
as well as goofy comedy at times, especially the chef
this live action film, on the other hand, it does have some good elements, But it lacks the charm of the original
which again, shares the recurring problem with most of the other remakes, which is that they dont seem to connect with many viewers and that they have a badly done story
a black ariel is ok in this film Alone, But when you have the storytelling done poorly, it has a Negative effect
Your rant about Anti Woke people from 8:00 to 11:23 is too god damn right! You roasted them so hard, we're gonna need Fireman Sam!

You know you’ve been on a comeback since the Mario movie review that I hate
People will expect a certain level of accuracy, even in fictional recreations
The only fictional character that is canonically black I can think of (in regards to the West anyway) is Shakespeare’s Othello.
She’s a fictional creature, ffs.
they should remake the black cauldron (1985)?

I guess it's because many of the other remakes range from mediocre to insultingly bad. Remember how the Lion King remake had the most lifeless, expresionless animals ever put to screen?
