- Amongst all of Disney’s CEOs in their history, Bob Chapek is arguably the worst of them all and did so much damage to the company in just a few years. But why did Disney hire Bob Chapek in the first place if he was proven to be so unqualified for the job? It’s time to look at a small, yet chaotic part of Disney’s history where they were left in the hands of the worst CEO they’ve ever had.

zaslav is ceo of wb discovery and before that, discovery inc. he was good in his time at discovery inc, but we saw how bad he was in wb.

Even before and after Chepek left the picture, Disney has been found down a dark path. The company was still overly gluttonous and have been doing shady things. From scrubbing LGBT and black actors fork Chinese marketing to making the prices skyrocket at their parks. They were always going to go down that path, but Chepek when full throttle.

Envy: Their Rivalry with Don Bluth & DreamWorks.
Lust: Their Desire For Dominance.
Greed: Their Need & Want For Money.
Not to mention during Chapek's time as CEO, The Owl House sadly annouced it's cancelation after greenlighting S3 prior to Season 2's premeire and during work of TOH Season 1, as one guy said that TOH didn't fit the Disney Brand.
I still believe he was the guy the gave the go ahead to kill ToH even though creator Dana Terrence said it was not his fault (but then again, we know she lied, he did it). I still hate hearing the words "3 45 minute specials" like I want to punch Chapek badly for it for the sake of ToH fans.
And because of what happened, she left Disney on bad terms, probably never wanting to work there again as she's now doing stuff for Adult Swim
I enjoy your work, but there is almost NOTHING about Iger's own faults on Disney going to the gutter. A massive oversight, it was a failure from both Iger and Chapek.
Thank you it's ridiculous to try to put everything on Chapek when most of the bad decisions were Iger's.

I'm still unforgiving towards Bob Chapek for his comment about animation "being just for kids", but hearing the rest of this story and the other problems that Chapek caused to Disney only makes me further glad that he was fired.

Bob Chapek’s time at Disney was definitely one of the worst periods for the company. Oh and thank you for using a bit of that hilarious video where Mickey fired Chapek. He truly f***ed with the magic!

The sad part is Bob Chapek is from Hammond, Indiana, Not far from where I live and grew up in Hobart, Indiana. I thought he was going to do well and make Northwest Indiana proud. Boy was I wrong.
What's even worse is that Bob Chapek supports Donald Trump. No wonder why Bob Chapek is a Trump supporter.
I remember the morning this happened, I woke up and checked my phone to see a bunch of notifications that chapek left. I was so damn happy that I accidentally woke up everyone else in my house, after that it was literally one of the best days of my life for more than that reason
Let’s see….Chapek put in charge RIGHT BEFORE the pandemic…and then finding out that Iger was basically still in power (not leaving the company)…I kinda feel sorry for him. People thinking Iger coming back would save it are fools….the guy put the company in the position it’s in today.
I feel Iger is more to blame. Everyone scapegoats Chapek but almost every bad decision made under his tenure has ties to Iger and 2 years is hardly enough time to construct and implement every disaster. Iger is so legacy focused that people shift the blame even though Iger’s legacy is still worse in my eyes.
Iger made poor decisions, but Chapek said animation is for kids. He's unfit to own a company with animation as its foundation.

@@Nightman221k Tim Burton started it. He directed Alice in Wonderland. And on a technicality, the remakes started in the 90s with the Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians.
@@CaptainCat101 I'm meaning the wave of direct remakes of things like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, etc. where it's a quickly pushed out barrage and not a one off that was trying to do something unique like 101 and Alice were doing. And yeah Alice did pretty much start it because that was what showed them it could be successful.

Disney needs a leader that actually understands their arts and respects creativity. Even during Bob Iger's tenure, Disney has been relying too much on the past and familiar IP's. With all the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm. As well as doing all of the live action remakes, which is just as much of an insult to the originals as the direct-to-video sequels were. Which funnily enough were ended as soon as Bob Iger took over Michael Eisner.
It was actually John Lasseter who stopped production of the sequels. He most likely didn't stop the remakes (if he didn't like them) because he wouldn't have had control in that department
@@CaptainCat101 Yeah, I forgot to mention him, since he was promoted to a creative executive over at Walt Disney Animation Studios around the same time when Disney bought Pixar. It's a shame that the type of behavior Lasseter had caused him to be let go in 2018. And what did we get the same year from WDAS? Ralph Breaks The Internet! The first Disney sequel since The Little Mermaid 3, and the first WDAS sequel since Fantasia 2000.
I know people will say something like "Isn't Ron Miller the worst Disney CEO?", or "What about Michael Eisner?" However, both Miller and Eisner did things that ultimately helped Disney in the long run. Miller oversaw the creation of both Disney Channel and Touchstone Pictures, while Eisner brought in the Disney Renaissance before things went downhill.
Unfortunately, Chapek's tenure was one marred by unfortunate circumstance; COVID-19 instigated the Black Widow lawsuit and the Disney+-exclusive Pixar releases, and his response to DeSantis's new bill and the ensuing fallout was rather chilly, to say the least. Not to mention no one thought Chapek would be the next head at Disney, if not wanted him to.
You know you didn't do well when the masses at D23 booed you when you make your entrance.
Ultimately, it's no surprise that Chapek was ousted just less than three years after taking Iger's job. And while the returning Iger currently has his own problems with the dual strikes, he's still determined to right the course and not only bring Disney back to its usual self, but make it better than before.
And there are certainly signs that Disney's recovering. Elemental was the theatrical success Pixar needed, with nearly $500 million at the box office. And "quality over quantity" is now being prioritized throughout the studios, after the opposite caused the MCU to have its reputation plummet (Eternals, Quantumania and Secret Invasion gaining Rotten status is proof of that).
I think that Disney can and will learn from the Chapek era, and I'm certain that Iger won't make the same mistake twice. And regardless of what the future holds, it's going to be exciting as to where Disney heads next.
(To his credit, though, Chapek acknowledged that his tenure was rather hellish. So he seems to agree with everyone here.)
plus people in the Parks division already hated Chapek for his penny-penching ways. Eternals and Quantamania are damn good films.
Chapek is 100% to blame for the current state of the MCU in my opinion. The only bad things that Iger has done/did to them was firing James Gunn because of Twitter Nazis and asking for Disney Plus content because up until 2019 he kept his hands out and let Kevin Feige do his thing.
I actually liked Quantumania personally, but to each their own. If I’m honest, I’ve never been able to fully comprehend just what CEOs do. I get they’re in charge, but I guess I never truly understood the scope of their jobs enough to be overly interested in the parts they play, large as they no doubt are.
Eisner was far from perfect, especially towards the end of his tenure, but when his successes were massive. The Disney Renaissance, Disney Afternoon on TV, the parks were a perfect blend of classic nostalgia and new innovations, he even hosted the Sunday night movies on TV (and can you imagine Iger or Chapek doing that? 😬)
Eisner was far from horrible. Yes, he made some bad decisions near the end, but all in all, he treated the company much like Walt did, focusing on innovation and imagination. The issue was after Wells passed, Eisner no longer had the financial partner necessary to keep him in check, thus why he started making bad decisions. This in no way means Eisner was awful, where we have him to thank for the disney park resurgence and the Disney renaissance, which lasted from 89 to 2000.

Over spending on the fox deal, destroying the Star Wars brand, increasing prices at the parks, mismanaging the MCU, Green lighting multiple box office bombs, turning Disney woke. All of these things where done under Iger but Chapek is the worst CEO???

Personally, I wish Michael Eisner should’ve stayed and still kept his job as CEO of the Walt Disney company, because back in the 90s, he started the Disney renaissance.
LMFAO never. He was running things into the ground near the end of his run. By then, only Pixar was making constant box office hits for the company, a since Pixar was independent at the time, Eisner caused Pixar to consider breaking up with Disney until Iger came in and patched things up with Steve Jobs so the studio could be acquired. Not to mention the disastrous openings of EuroDisney and California Adventure.
He also thought Lion King and Finding Nemo would be a failure, said NO to Lord of the Rings, and treated pixar like crap pretty much the same as Chapek.

Disney was completely Directionless and Leaderless. Miller was acting CEO from 1977 until 1983 when he was officially named Disney CEO. Don Bluth had actually started pitching several film ideas to Disney and "Secret of Nimh" was originally pitch as "Mrs Frisby and The Rats of Nimh" as Robert C. O'Brien's Widow Sarah had given clearance for the Novel to be adapted into an Animated feature in 1975, Miller hated the Novel, but Roy Disney was very optimistic after The Rescuers returns came in very solid and impressively well but Miller convinced the rest of the Chairboard to turn down the idea. When Bluth attempted to pitch his original Creation "Banjo The Woodpile Cat" to Disney in 1978, Miller flat out SCOFFED at the concept, which is why Bluth Stormed out of Disney and convinced several animators working on "The Fox And The Hound" to leave with him.
Although Ron was officially appointed CEO in 1983 to oversee the launch of Disney Channel and Touchstone Pictures, Both of these Ventures were "Leaky Motors" which is a business term for Startup Ventures of an Existing Corporation that are operating in Red and not making profit. Neither were making any profit until 1985.

That being said, “Splash” being a success with critics and audiences didn’t stop Ron Miller from getting fired 6 months after its release.
It also didn’t help that the second movie from “Touchstone Pictures” titled “Country” was released 3 weeks after Ron Miller’s forced resignation, and was a box office bomb (grossing $9.64 million on a budget of $10 million becoming the 82nd highest grossing film of 1984! 😬).
Ron Miller may have been instrumental in creating “Touchstone Pictures”, but it was Michael Eisner who helped “Touchstone” regain its touch (pun intended) in 1986 with hit films like “Down and Out in Beverly Hills”, “Ruthless People”, and “The Color of Money”.
Of course, the rest is history!

When you first talked about Chapek’s firing, I commented on your podcast episode (where it has this news story) where I said “rise and fall of Bob Chapek or history of Bob chapek then”. To my surprise, my prediction came true. Somehow, I have the ability to see the future like Bruno.
But anyways, fantastic job on this video Mat. Business wise, the Chapek era might as well count as Disney’s 4th dark age after the the 2nd half of Eisner’s era. There may be highs during the era like a handful of animated films getting great praise and success on Disney+, some highly acclaimed rides, Hamilton, and other good things & benefits but this and the pandemic era will unfortunately go down in history as one of the the roughest periods in Disney’s history. As you said, the business side of Disney isn’t that great for now but the creative side is perfectly fine and solid the way it is
Sure, Bob Iger may not be a perfect CEO (even during is first tenure as CEO) and they may have a long way to go to fix things up like to bring them back to how the business side of Disney was before the covid period but I 💯 agree with your conclusion at the end where you said that you said that they’ll get better for sure. I’m not worried about their future either. After all, they bounced back after rough eras before. Regardless if the strikes and other low points happened or not they’re going to be ok. It may be a long road to recovery similar to the 1970s and especially the 1980s period, but i hope they’ll get fully better someday soon. That’s my overall piece for now
The decisions Bob Chapek made during his tenure were not only awful, but down right baffling. I hope Iger can repair most of what damage has been done.

So someone actually made Eisner look GOOD? That's the hardest part of the story to believe...
I think Eisner was amazing in the 80’s and 90’s. But his time was up in the 2000’s.
Chapek wasn't left with a perfect blueprint to move Disney into successful times (COVID, the star wars fanbase imploding, etc). But some very poor decisions were made regarding Pixar (disrespecting their content by making some of it streaming only content even after 2020), Marvel (the lack of quality control it used to be known for, alongside way too much content getting released), and the parks (that star wars hotel nobody with good financial decisions was going to stay in).
Whatever you thought of Disney before him, it absolutely got worse when he left his mark.
Especially when it came to Turning Red, it was inexcusable they didn’t give it a theatrical release over COVID concerns.
By 2022, it had greatly subsided and theaters were already reopen.
It took revenue away which was horrible.
At least though Elemental had a massive rebound, especially for an original.
I do see more potential with that too as the film was phenomenal

@@boydixonentertainment There is one that people forget about and that is Frank Wells, he and Eisner took over after Ron Miller and created the Disney Renaissance. Sadly Wells passed away in an helicopter accident. This led to Eisner eventually makeing bad decisions.

Chapek got saddled with most of Iger's failed decisions. Most of the shit that happened during his two years was started by Iger and his people, and before Chapek even had the chance to course correct, they scapegoated him.
Who knows if Chapek would have been a good CEO for disney, but he was left to clean up Iger's timebombs.
It takes years to get new movies and projects greenlit and into production. None of Chapek's ideas even reached that far when they fired him. Everything that released during Chapek's time was started by Iger.
Chapek said animation is for kids, that alone makes him unfit to own a company that has animation as its foundation.

Just cause you want more adult animation, doesn't mean that's what's profitable.
Most of the disney animation movies you've probably enjoyed have been focused on films that were made with families in mind.
Plus you forget the most important aspect of business. If you hook a kid on your company at a young age, they'll probably grow up to spend money with your company when they're an adult.
@@shonen991 kids doesn't always mean families. The Incredibles is a family movie, Paw Patrol is for kids. They're both animated, but one appeals to a wider audience.
Not to mention that Disneyland/DisneyWorld has stuff for adults too. They've made several decent horror-themed rides in the past.
Yes Disney is more of a hook at a young age, but it has lasting power that can still appeal to adults, animated or otherwise.
And honestly, I don't see Chapek as definitively homophobic because of how he handled that bill. Disney was donating to those politicians because Republicans in general give them less regulatory hurdles (corporate lobbying, *period* is the elephant in the room here) and he was basically under gunpoint. That is cowardly, mind you, but I don't think he agrees with homophobic sentiments himself.

Tom Staggs was pushed out by Iger. He didn't quit. Iger saw him as a potential threat to his continued contract extensions, and he got the board to dismiss him. It's in the New York Times. "Behind the Scenes at Disney as It Purged its Favorite Son."

Edit: And yeah, 2022 was definitely a depressing year for Disney fans like myself (even with films I liked such as Turning Red and Puss In Boots: TLW), heck the only thing I really hoped Chapek wouldn't screw with when he first took over WAS the animation side of Disney, since that was the side I always cherished the most (even when the main company was making dumb decisions)... and yet he did exactly that...
I was so saddened by WDAS and Pixar's recent struggles that I even went out of my way to beg others to see films like Elemental and Wish in theaters if they truly cared about WDAS and Pixar as much as I did.
It seemed to work so far with the former, but now I'm really hoping that the latter will be even more successful, especially now that Disney is about to reach a certain milestone. PLEASE! I can't bear to see one of my favorite animation studios suffer even more when they are just turning 100 years old!
Chapek’s inept response to the bill was especially egregious because Disney was playing lip service when it came to inclusive content. Many properties kept representation minimal so it could be censored when sold overseas, and properties like #TheOwlHouse were outright mistreated.

It can be argued that Iger was worse as many of his projects and directives came to fruition during the Chapek era. Ultimately the Iger/Chapek woke overlords from Blackrock, Vanguard and Front Street controlled the strategic planning.
How Disneyworld dealt with the virus was a joke! In 2021 I was barely a year after fighting Cancer and we were celebrating. Pretty much there was no social distance( and wearing a mask) in the lines all the members did ( not bashing you guys) for hygiene all they did were passing sanitizer before or after the ride and gave us a parade to meet our favorite characters. Universal on the other hand still made it fun! 6 foot encounters with characters in creative ways, they made sure that masks were on and sanitizer before and after the ride! I felt more safe in Universal than at WDW. In fact, I need to redo that trip.

You know generally, I didn't think I was going to like this, mainly the fact I'm not a business guy, or somewhat of a politician. I'm more into the process of how a movie production is made and it having the consequences when things don't go well. But with this said after seeing this I finally got the whole issue when it came with Chepek's damage to the company.
At first, it didn't seem like it was too much of his fault like COVID-19 was something nobody could prevented and I can guess it was a nightmare for everyone who had to deal with it. But once it was over, THAT'S when everything gets bad! Like all the poor choices, bad ideas, lousy setups, and dealerships like WOW. It takes effort to actually a beloved company look bad.
All of that aside, this will probably take years for them to recover from a hit like that, all is to know who could be the real superior CEO to take over after Iger? That's like a real cliffhanger when you think about it.

2022 was actually a really dark age for everyone. Warner Brothers Discovery, Bam Margera got kicked out of the movie, Jackass Forever due to his drug abuse & how his sober life always gets back to be sour, and so many of our iconic stars passed away, Olivia Newton John, Queen Elizabeth, Bob Saget from Full House & the actor who played the legendary Tommy Oliver from Power Rangers, Jason David Frank. Speaking of that… what I think is Disney’s most terrible decision they’ve ever done than hiring Bob Chapek as CEO… is that the company no longer wanted the Power Rangers. Disney & Michael Eisner acquired the Power Rangers in 2001, as part of the acquisition of Saban & the whole Fox Family network for 8 billion dollars. And the only show from Fox Kids Disney continued is Power Rangers, but they actually made most of the best seasons ever made for the show! 😱 Wild Force, Ninja Storm, Dino Thunder, SPD, Jungle Fury, & RPM! That’s probably the reason why I don’t understand why they decided to sell the franchise back to their original owner. Since then, the Power Rangers universe wasn’t really been the same. No longer wanting Power Rangers is the worst decision Disney has ever made.

I thought Michael Eisner and Ron Miller were bad ones since they also almost tarnished the company, but Chapek made more things worse. But Michael Eisner did try make things better but the failures or Euro Disney and the Loss of Frank Wells was the reason why the 2000s is a bad era. With Chapek I believe the Disney Revival Era is Over and now that were are in a third dark age even with Iger. Chapek doesn't look good

Wow, Bob Chapek really screwed Disney up. And the COVID-19 pandemic was of course no help either. Let's just hope Disney can build their roots back up with Bob Iger back in charge, with its 100th anniversary this year. Yes, there's those strikes, I know. Somebody, please do something! And some Disney+ content has been removed, like what?! Oh, yeah, I also do not care for all the needless live-action remakes Disney will not stop doing! And I do not forgive them for closing Blue Sky Studios down; it was way better before Disney bought 20th Century Fox, I realise now.
Hence why I only have respect for Disney's sub-companies, at least Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm.

As a Disney fan, I am more happy Chapek got the boot! I was cheering and celebrating when that happened; it was like watching my worst enemy fall into a septic tank. But still, Disney needs to fire their newest workers that are constantly making shitty remakes and horrible animated movies!

I know people are also saying the same about Bob Iger, but when comparing him to Chapek, Chapek failed to understand what Disney truly stands for. Iger on the other hand does, and his recent comments regarding that the company has been focusing too much on quantity and not enough on quality, is proof of that. And he's right, when Chapek was in charge, he spent the whole of last year looking at ways of gaining more Disney+ subscribers that he just didn't care about anything else, not even the quality of the content they were releasing to Disney+. Same can be said for their theatrical films as well. Then, there was rushing the roll out of Disney Genie at the parks, which I personally don't think would've been half as bad, if he had just chosen to roll it out gradually instead of rushing it. But because of Covid, he had a good excuse to roll it out sooner, rather than later.
However, ever since Bob Iger returned, things have slowly but surely been improving, especially at the parks. Free resort parking has returned for guests, park reservations are being dropped at Disney World, starting 9th January 2024, Disney dining plan is also returning. All day park hopping is coming back on 9th January too, and most importantly, Genie+ will change up to the point of where we will be able to spend less time on our phones and more time having fun at the parks, starting in 2024. And as mentioned above, Bob Iger has said that going forward, they're going to be focusing more on quality, rather than quantity. So all and all, things are staring to turn around, and we just need to have faith
