Wild to me that And1 was actually a major brand at one point, because I've only ever known it as a department store brand. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's a bit of a downer to see a brand that was once a fairly big deal end up in that place, reminds me of Airwalk tbh.
Thank you so much for this video, Bryan! I remember this era of street ball fondly. My brother and I were probably the first kids wearing And 1 clothes back in high school. Those trash talk tees were amazing! I saw that Mitchell & Ness did a collab with And 1 and brought some of the tees back.
I had some And1 shoes as a kid back in like 2003 very similar to the thumbnail ones. My family was pretty frugal because money was tight, but they were cheap and I remember they lasted me a long time even as someone who was tough on their shoes.
Tom Austin the guy behind the footwear design team was obsessed with making a good product. Maybe that’s why they lasted so long for you! Thanks for sharing man
I always remember And1 pretty fondly, back in highschool we were all pretty broke, so the shorts, socks, and some of the Jordan knockoffs were pretty popular. The shorts especially, they were cheap and held up good enough for football practice
NBA Jam, SLAM Magazine, Shaq Fu… Man, this was about the time I began to lose interest in Bball and HipHop. “I Used To Love H.E.R.” I was with Common back then. I enjoyed the ride up, but everything became commercial and, therefore, homogenized. Road Running is going through this phenomenon now. It’s a good thing Track & Field isn’t as easy to pimp. Great upload. ✌🏽💙👟
And1 can make a comeback with the right marketing tools and player endorsement. And1 should start its comback by having top NBA players known for their impeccable ball handling skills endorse some newly designed kicks. Kyrie Irving would be a good start.
I miss the days when sports/athletics companies would make proper advertising campaigns. The whole lil story they would put behind a product and the athlete endorsing it.
My bros Bryan and Nacho with great content as always 💯🍻 This one took me back to the early 2000’s and on era, tai chis hold a place in time. Love u guys and your work
and1 created signature models for Sprewell and Garnett in the early 2000s. the first and1 shoe i was was a black/white Karat Mid. it was very comfortable to wear. the and1 shoe i regret buying for myself was the Sprewell. it felt heavy. kept it in storage for some years until i completely forgot about it. and it strangely disappeared. don't remember if i gave it to someone. it's sad to see no nba player wears and1 nowadays. if there's a particular and1 model i want to have now, it's the Tochillin slip-ons
You guys are a fucking college course in athletic history!! I’ll never laugh at the And-1 products at Burlington & Ross ever again!! You guys should do other histories in different sports!! You guys should do some history of soccer/futbol‼️
Dang yo this is sad...😢 I remember how HUGE the And1 Streetball scene was as a kid in the early 2000s it was the whole reason why games like NBA Street existed!
I remember watching my big sister's high school basketball game. And she's the only one who wore And1s while her teammates were wearing Nikes and Adidas
I remember those and1 tai chis where always in the NBA live games. this was before EA signed with all the shoe companies but they had them as a generic shoes in the game but everyone knew what they were
I tried to join and1 when they had auditions here in cleveland mid 90s ..shit was WILD YO.. you should have seen it,i met Allen inverson that year on that court💯💯💯💯Dope history!
The show was so dope. I would spend all summer trying to master those moves. Anytime someone would ball with the AND1 shirts on we knew they could hoop!
I used to own two pairs of AND1s, there was a pair of grey-shaded patchwork slip-ons, that were lightweight but durable. I can't find the model colorway anywhere on the internet, sadly. And then there were a white-blue pair of AND1 Uprise, that became my favorite pair of basketball shoes I've ever owned. They lasted me a looong time through continuous use on different surfaces. Indoor, outdoor, wherever. I've always appreciated AND1's dedication to making an affordable, but durable and well-performing product. I've had two pair of budget Air and Zoom Nikes since, that served me okay but couldn't dethrone the AND1s. Now I have two pairs of Adidas Dame 3 and 8 EXTPLY respectively, and time will tell.
And1 came out when I was in middle school and loved basketball. And1 was in my AOL username and email , not just becasue of the brand but because and1 was a basketball term. I remember really loving the Tshirts that talked crap on the back and I remember at basketball camp everyone having different ones.
Growing up And1 really got my attention. It what got me into playing basketball, i don’t know why but their peak was during 04 to 07 exactly when NBA finals is somewhat boring. No disrespect to Pistons and Spurs but their style is somewhat boring for me as a child. So I turned to and1 instead

This is pretty dope cuz I was too young to understand the impact at the time. I was born when the company was founded & didn’t fall in love with Basketball until the company was bought out around 06 lol. So it’s pretty crazy how quick things changed in a 10 yrs
Another reason they fell off was because some of the star players like Main Event wouldn't come off the bus during the Open Runs on the blacktop. They began to act like they were above everyone else once they started making that arena money. Hot Sauce didn't though, he was humble and down to earth. But one player by the name of Exile exposed the And 1 camp when he was hated off the tour bus because he was on the skill level of Hot Sauce. His team even dropped a mixtape of their own featuring all the top street ballers from the west coast, also Exile shook the hell outta Hot Sauce in that Streetball legends game back in 2003
I bought the original Tai Chi lows on sale but was a Nike lifer. I was shocked how well the Tai Chis were. I instantly became an And 1 fanboi. Wish they stayed around in original form.
And1 started off wanting to complete with Adidas and Nike in the shoe maker NOT with clothes. They shifted to street ware after the first NBA player they sponsored jacked up his ankle on his first game. That when they targeted the street ballers and to have an edge and gritty appeal they created the iconic tshirts.
6:27 is not Hot Sauce, but Roberto Yong aka Exile, an opposing player on the and1 open runs, but yes they do look similair. also Hot Sauce was not discovered on an open run himself in Atlanta, as he was incarcerated when the tour came to Atlanta. They posted bail and flew him out to LA, and put him on the And1 Team directly because of his status directly.
I remember every college hooper I knew in the 90's was rocking And1 gear. The shirts, the shorts, and if they weren't rocking Nikes on their feet, they were rocking And1s. Recently, out of curiosity, I bought a pair of And1s, and for a budget brand, they're still pretty good.

You made such entertaining and in depth videos about so many sneakers with big cultural impact but what about air max 90’s? In my opinion the air max line is one of the most recognizable shoe lines still relevant today and i would love to see you continue the air max series 🫶
And 1 messed up by focusing too much on getting NBA players, they should’ve focused on the mixtape players. I don’t understand how they never made a Hot Sauce shoe or a Skip 2 My Lou shoe 🤦🏾♂️
The designs were really good and they are really affordable. The quality of these shoes was ahead of its time, surpassing that of Nike, Adidas, and Reebok. These major brands offered shoes with excellent adhesive properties, ensuring they lasted for many years. You could even wash your shoes, and the soles wouldn't detach for years. In contrast, AND1's quality was considerably poorer, causing them to wear out quickly. Now, Nike seems to be following a similar path. While their shoes maintain good overall performance and technology, the adhesive used in recent models doesn't endure as long as the sturdy construction they were known for in the 1990s and early 2000s.
I used to love rockin AND1 and It would be relivent even today.... who doesn't like wearing roasting attire, and those first roasts were so basic, some of the later ones were nasty roasts.. If you could get a PR team like the one in the 90's I have no doubt it could be huge again. But instead of American players it would/could be advertised as international as I have seen videos of some nasty international hoopers that could really hold down their home courts...
It’s crazy how and1 went from a brand that was rivaling nike to a Walmart brand
