when you explained how getting tattooed on specific body parts that you may be slightly insecure about, getting tattooed there helps sort of reclaim that body part and helps you fall in love with it again. love it.

This is exactly how I feel. I never felt “at home” in my body until I started getting heavily tattooed. I’d always try to cover every inch of my body in hopes that I could essentially “disappear” but now I always want to proudly display my tattoos. They’ve also helped me come out of my shell and be more social with strangers.

So cool to hear about how tattoos help your insecurities, as a pre medical transition trans man I find getting tattooed helps me to fall in love with my body despite its dissonance. I don’t tattoo areas of insecurity for practical reasons (pre surgery and scarring) but I find that even have tattoos on my body away from these places helps me to embrace the whole.

11:32 I used this numbing cream for my upper back piece . I applied it like around 10:30am and wrapped it. Took the wrap off around 12:30 and it was numb until 6 . Then I felt the pain near my armpits. So then I applied more cream every break we did after that for about 5 minutes and it’ll last another 10-15 minutes . My session took 10.5 hours . 1.5 hours of drawing with the sharpie and 9 hours of tattooing . If you guys would like to see the piece, the tattoo artist posted the video on his channel . His RUclips channel is Ad742n and the thumbnail is my back saying Familia BARRERA

When I saw he was coming to London the same time I was there too, I was so excited and thought it was a sign to go ahead and book an appointment! 😁

About a month and a half ago I started a rib piece and we got linework done. I used Bondi numbing cream and boy does that shit work! I didn’t feel anything except for the spots I missed. That stuff is super expensive but totally worth it! Like it’s $30-$35 a tube.

Funny you should mention moth&dagger tattoos. Because that's the newest tattoo I got xD It was a flash from march, LOVED it so much I had to book it! I was unlucky and it got very irritated two days later - probably because I did a 3 day wrap thing which apparently will make so the ink stays better and not really scab over? I dunno, my skin for sure did NOT like that! - but we live in such wonderful modern times that, even if it was easter holidays, I could still get hold of the artist and ask what to do. It's all good now, but I sure got a good scare out of it :,)
I had tattoos only on my right side until two weeks ago, so you weren't alone in that xD I love me some asymmetry though, so I never minded, but it was a weird thing how all my tattoos ended up on the right.
Love your new piece, how it all heals well and that the last session won't be too bad :)

I just got 3 big peonies on my left hip from like waist to mid thigh and it was hard. The middle flower alone is like 8x8 inches and shading nearly did me in. It also was hitting nerves that were making my toes twitch, which was so annoying for me and probably the artist. But, after a quick break, I actually felt better and we were able to complete the whole thing. Its black and Grey and took a little over 7 hours.
I also just booked my next two tats in August and October - my artist is super busy.

I have not used numbing cream until very recently, but I've had experiences with two different creams. TKTX has gotten some bad feedback recently, but it apparently contains about 20% lidocaine. That can cause some irritation for some people, but it works and it lasts for a couple hours. The other cream was painless tattoo co and that's about 5% lidocaine iirc. It works and it lasts for a couple hours, but it's not totally numbing like TKTX.

(Not completely related but you talking about shaking reminded me of this)
I have ADHD, and due to that I'm really shaky and I have a hard time keeping myself shaking (especially my legs)
And it's even worse when I'm nervous or if I try to stop shaking. Also, I know I would probably have to stim pretty often if getting tattooed because of just the nature of how tattooing is.
I'm worried that I would be a really difficult tattoo client, though I'm really interested in getting tattooed a lot.
Does anyone have any advice or just personal experience with this? I'm curious how tattooing neurodivergent people would go.

This is an older comment but I have adhd and I usually bring earplugs (because the machines are really loud and it makes me anxious), a fidget toy and I change pose slightly every now and then - just tell the artist „hey, I’m going to move“, so they can take off the machine. Also make sure you’re comfortable, take your meds and have a snack beforehand :)

My adhd makes my skin twitch so bad, the artists sometimes think I’m struggling with the pain but I’m just trying to stay still😭. I totally understand my legs be going crazy I get so embarrassed. I just explain to my artists, they’re usually really cool about it, and numbing cream helps because you just don’t feel as much so you’re able to just close your eyes and wait for time to pass. As long as you’re not making a bunch of noise or being rude the artist should be able to handle it. Just make sure to tip and have a good attitude!

I use big over the ear headphones to keep my mind focused on being still/calm. Depending on where you're getting tattooed you can play with stim toys or draw/watch something to keep yourself busy! Also, you should let your artist know that sometimes you need to stim! Don't get tattooed by someone you don't trust or feel safe to stim around, there are plenty of kind and considerate artists out there! When the artist comes to a natural stopping point (like when they're lifting up the needle to get more ink, not while they're in the middle of tattooing) just let them know you need to stim and they will give you a minute to do so!

Getting my left leg done as im watching this. Only have inner thigh, knee and inner calf left and am thinking about getting nunbing cream. I completed my right leg without cream and have never used it on my other tattoos on my body. I just never remember my leg hurting this bad 😅

Thank you for being so honest about this. My first tattoo was a 3/4 sleeve and I used numbing cream (Dr. Numb) + wrapped (which also smelled so bad and it was so obvious) but I felt so bad for doing it since it seems like a lot of people talk trash on anyone who uses numbing cream/the whole, you dont deserve it if you dont feel it crew. anyway it didn't help but I will check out this mithra for my ~under boob area~.

Most tattoo artists I know are total babies when they get tattooed themselves so no need to feel wimpy using numbing cream - especially for those more sensitive areas! I would recommend maybe getting two of the creams since the tubes are pretty small.

@@neoxochitl I would definitely talk to you’re artist and make sure they have tattooed on numbed skin. I don’t use numbing cream bc I have a very high pain tolerance. But I asked my artist about what it’s like to tattoo numbed skin bc I was curious and she said it can get tough and be rubbery like chicken skin. Every artist is different though so I would at least make sure you’re artist has delt with numbed skin! It definitely does suck to hear how many artists hate numbing cream though because I think if someone needs to use it why not, everyone deserves to have amazing pieces of art work on themselves

🦩 I'm toying with the idea of a lower leg sleeve because there's an artist in my area who does amazing geometric designs and I don't think with work I could do an arm sleeve. Definitely nervous about the potential pain level on my shin and how well it would heal, although I feel like if I got it in the early summer I could wear lower shoes and/or socks during the healing process. I love hiking though, and I feel like the hiking boots and socks would cause problems if I didn't take a few weeks off to heal it properly. 🤷‍♀️

Numbing creams are a bit like having an epidural when having a baby. Fantastic when it's working but if your in labour a long time & you don't get topped up early enough, the pain comes back & hits you like a truck. Stunning tattoo.

I have a big tattoo that covers my knee, part of thigh and shin. One of the artist in the studio has a photo of me crying. It was intense. I'm also not tuff by any means. Looks cool AF though. Congrats.

I have perhaps 60ish hours of work done on me. Now I have a loose idea and I let my artist decide on the flow and direction. I’m less involved and it looks better..

I’m getting a mandala on my knee in a month. I only have a tattoo down the back of of forearm and a small one on my butt lol. Went I went for the consultation for my knee the artist said he doesn’t like numbing cream and I’m over here just like uh yeah ok but I’m still coming in with my knee covered in it because I’m scared for how bad it’s gonna be
