    1. Dariya is not a part of our daily vocab. It's mostly used by poets and lyricists. Nodi is our go to word.

    Some of the missing points:
    1. Odia is considered as one of six classical language of India
    2. It descends from Odra-Prakrit during 9th to 10th century AD
    3. Inscription of Easter Ganga Dynasty used Old Odia(10th to 13th Century)
    4. Works of Saraladas is considered as the first work of Odia literature
    5. Jayadeva's Gita Gobinda
    6. Upendra Bhanja's works were the milestones for modern odia.

The orthodoxy of Odia and the heterodoxy of Bengali are the most remarkable features that had always perplexed me since my childhood. But also become an objective "outsider" for the either culture with a different point of view when I want to.

I just came back from a trip to Odisha and your video got suggested on my feed. As a Bengali, I was really happy that I spoke Bangla to literally everybody in Odisha (because my Hindi is weak and I don't know if everyone can understand or speak English, as it's not mandatory to do so). I spoke in Bangla and they spoke in Odia and we had a very normal communication. In fact sometimes they spoke in English and I replied in Bangla and they were surprised and relieved and switched to Odia. It was a nice experience. It's also important that Odisha is closer to Andhra Pradesh, and their written scripts look similar. And Odia language sounds like Bangla. It's possible that the people who popularised spoken Odia and people who wrote Odia were from different places, aka Dravidian and proto Sanskrit.

  • @infinite5795
    @infinite5795 Год назад +225

Note-Panasa is a pure Sanskrit word as well, with Dravidian origins( Dravidian loanwords)-8:32
    2) Odia has grammaticalized clusivity with its verbal conjugation, Bengali has no concept of clusivity absolutely.
    3) Odia uses complentizers abundantly like Dravidian languages, such a concept doesnt exist in Bengali.
    4) Odia language is unique in the Indo-aryan languages to have no schwa-deletion at all which helps Odias to easily predict the origins of many words.
    5) Odia is also unique to be written in a brahmi derivative, in its initial centuries of Christian era, its called "Kalinga" Brahmi and it was used in old temple inscriptions and palm leaves/copper grants, until 12th century CE. Eastern Gangas adopted the Kutiļa or Siddhama script, by the 10th century AD, which overshadowed Kalinga Brahmi later on.
Plus, this video got me wheezing, because it felt like you wanna go more on the cultural differences, rather than the profound linguistic differences, be it grammatical or otherwise.
Of course if you are gonna go culturally,
    1) Odias are vastly different from Bengali, we are purely fervent Vaishnavaites since times anon such that, it is commonly said/believed in Odisha, Shiva-Devi have to take help from Sri Jagannatha to get worshipped in Odisha( our kings have always promoted Vaishnavaism), even Durga puja is a new age phenomenon for us.
    2) Odias don't keep Durga or any Mahavidya pics in their houses, because we believe that we are not well versed with Shakta worship, Shaktas requires blood sacrifice traditionally which Odias absolutely abhor( due to profound Vaishnava influence) and it might bring a sense of negativity in the house. We do have our local goddesses, but most of them have always been considered benevolent forms of lakshmi and Gaurika. Contrast to that, Hindu Bengalis are hard-core Shaktites, even today after Sri Chaitanya's influence.
    3) Odias are not that keen on non-veg as Bengalis, even the voracious have at most 2 to 3 days max, when we eat fish, fowl or duck, not almost everyday like Bengalis. Odias also leave non-veg entirely in the Kartika month of the year, Bengalis dont have any such concept at all.
    4) Also, Odias follow the "Hawaiian" kinship system and Bengalis( both Hindu and Muslim) follow the"Sudanese" kinship system.
    5) Architecture of both is different as well, Bengalis have mostly characteristic "chala" type where the roofs are thatched, with turrets, resembling kuccha houses of rural Bengal. Odisha on the other hand, uses black stone to create Kalingan architecture or Deulaw, more boxy in shape and a single Odia temple has 3 spires/divisions traditionally, natamandapa, bhogamanadapa garbagriha. Odissi is traditionally done in these natamandapas and was born in the Nata mandapa of Jagannath temple itself.
    6) Odissi, the cultural dance of Odissi is only based on Vaishnavaite themes like most Odia arts, most dances of Bengal if not all are modern or folk and have secular origins.

Orissa is the original leader state not Bengal. In Malaysia, Indians are called 'Keling' (from Kalinga - The ancient name for the land that is Orissa today) - The original ambassadors and spreaders of Indian and Hindu culture in South East Asia from Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia etc. to Bali. Bengalis capitalized on the fact that the British made Calcutta their first capital in India and took their culture and language to the next level. Orissa however faced a decline like the previously wonderful Bihar and ravages of cyclones and even wars, invasions etc...

I'm from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The city is an amalgamation of cultures. Especially Bengali and Odia, being near to both of the States. In my locality most of the residents are Odias and we constitute a few Bengali families. But the interesting thing is that most of the Odia speakers inevitably understand and can speak Bangla with ease without having received a formal education or being around the language that much . I was amazed at this observation, we Bengalis have a hard time understanding their odia dialects but they speak Bengali fluently.

Kerala was the gateway through which the Portuguese entered India. Hence, it is obvious they had a lot of cultural exchange with the Malayalis. This even led to the development of Malayalam-Portuguese Creoles. Apart from Janela and Perakka, Casera, mesha, etc. were also imported into the Malayalam vocabulary. The Portuguese have their largest influence in the Konkan region. Goa, DNH, Daman and Diu and even parts of Mumbai were controlled by the portuguese. However, the word for guava in Marathi spoken in the hinterlands of Maharashtra is also 'Peru'. Thus, divided by languages and united by guava.

India has six languages that are considered classical:
Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia.
There is no Bengali... Which clearly clarifies Odia cannot be a derivative of Bengali.

Odia language is one of the classical language.
There are six languages that enjoy the 'Classical' status in India: Tamil (declared in 2004), Sanskrit (2005), Kannada (2008), Telugu (2008), Malayalam (2013), and Odia (2014).

The timing was impeccable .. I was in at a party y'day and a friend asked me to explain the similarities and differences betwen Odia and Bengali. I tried explaining some of the similarities like the "Au" sound and the "Aww" sound ... I felt that I wasn't doing justice.. I was planning to do some more research and share it with my friends.. Then I see this feed coming in my channel today !!!
I am a malayalee who was raised in Odisha and had loads of bengali friends. I picked up both the languages because of them. Earlier in my career, it was so easy for me to move from BBSR to Kolkatta for my first job.. Felt at home in both the states, including the food. I must say, the flavor of food too is very similar in both the states !!!
The way you explained about Bengali's influnence from Portugese and Arabia and Odia being a lot more traditional with an amagamation of its rich tribal history.. I now see how true it is.. never realised it.. Pera for Guava from portugese is the same as Pera in Malayalam too..
Thankyou very much for such a wonderfully researched and crafted video..
