  • Up-close look at every detail on a 1972 Ferrari Daytona Spyder, and deep dive into the history behind Daytona Spyder cut cars & how they differ from original Ferrari Daytona Spyder.
    The Ferrari Daytona, officially designated the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 for the Berlinetta and 365 GTS/4 for the Spyder, is a two-seat grand tourer produced by Ferrari from 1968 to 1973. It was introduced at the Paris Auto Salon in 1968 to replace the 275 GTB/4, and featured the 275's Colombo V12 bored out to 4,390 cc (4.4 L; 267.9 cu in). The Daytona was succeeded by the mid-engined 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer in 1973. The generally accepted total number of Daytonas from the Ferrari club historians is 1,406 over the life of the model. This figure includes 156 UK right-hand-drive coupés, 122 factory-made spyders (of which 7 are right hand drive), and 15 competition cars.
    The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder was featured in early episodes of Miami Vice - albeit a kit car built on a Corvette body.

    Which Miami Vice Ferrari do you prefer? The Daytona or the Testarossa?

    • @ImpactedWizDom
      @ImpactedWizDom 2 года назад +7

      I preferred the Testarossa but the Daytona holds a special place in my heart. I actually was working for the guy who had the contract with Universal studios to build those fake Ferraris used in the show when Miami Vice was on the the air. I built a few of the engines used in those cars on the show and worked on the “stunt” versions of the cars a bunch of times also. They had one each of the Testarossa and Daytona’s that were used for standard, non-action shots during filming, both of those had my motors in them. The other vehicles were primarily used for the chase scenes and crashes, etc. There was always at least one or two of their cars in the shop at any given time. Fun times until that arrangement ended badly….but that’s a whole other story!

      @charlesdalton985 2 года назад +2

      @@chuckp8705 Agreed! I had read somewhere, and can’t find the source right now, that there was one Cobra replica used for some scenes. If I can find that again, I’ll post. Regardless, most scenes were the real thing, rung out, awe inspiring.

    Though, as you mention. Car is a GT open road car. I remember watching on Vinwiki, the guy who stated I think the Pebble Beach concours.
    With his yellow Daytona, the steering was so heavy he had an electric rack & pinion steering installed. Very similar to Prius believe it or not. LoL

    To this viewer, a front-engined V-12 roadster making real-world power, with roomy interior and jaw-dropping visual appeal, is a far more appealing that Ferrari’s later mid-engined monsters - F-series, Enzos, La Ferraris, and so on - to own and actually drive. Years ago the Daytona’s valuation jumped dramatically. It is overdue for another.

    One other way to tell a cut Spyder from a real one. If is a spyder with four rocker switches on the dash it is a cut car. The genuine Spyders only have three switches as they don't have a rear window demister. Quite a few converted cars retained the switch rather than relocate the other three switches more centrally.

      or a daytona conversion, as a great number of them were converted over to as all it is, is a daytona that had a meeting with a can opener, and the only real difference is the decklid is more round while on the conversions its flat.

    Serious Ferrarista commonly pass wordless over _The_ _Gumball_ _Rally._ Just guessing, I believe this to be out of deference to Brock Yates.
    Yates' described Dan Gurney at the wheel of a 365GTB, at speed, through the desert, through the night, through an ice storm. No backup crew. No cellphone network. No third person in the world to know their whereabouts to within a hundred or more miles.
    I love that old road trip comedy. But Yates' paragraphs may be the most stirring account of a long, fast run on an open road since the days of Stirling Moss in the Mille Miglia. So far as I know, nothing has come out of subsequent highway rallies to equal Dan Gurney's Cannonball Run.

    Nice discussion of clues identifying a factory Spyder versus a Berlinetta. I believe there’s one other way to distinguish a Spyder from a cut Betlinetta: Michael Sheehan, another noted Ferrari expert, has written that the rake of the windshield is different - oddly, I think he said a real Spyder’s windshield is a couple of degrees more “upright” (less rake).

      It the same windscreen part number, Spyder or coupe. The silver car has the wrong Pininfarina badge on the wing/ fender, it should say, Desegno DI at the top and Pininfarina under that. It looks amazing though. Another way to you might be able to tell is a coupe had 4 mouse ear switches on the dash, one for the rear heated screen and the Spyder did not have a heated screen so only had 3 switches. I have just seen Matt said the same thing below!

    It was, and destroyed in the California River just after entering. It was rented, then another rented to complete. They also had no converted in 1976 as not valuable yet enough to make worth converting as an original of 121 were cheap. The cost to convert would cost more than the difference of a GTB to GTS. It was some time before they became valuable enough to convert. You still can at Scaglietti. Actually all 121 were Berlinetta Coupes, and converted to Spyders by Scaglietti even now. They don’t appreciate as much as still are documented as a GTB instead of a GTS. The GTS being heavier is actually a bit slower. Euro car’s are obviously faster.

    Please don't stone me for saying this.... but I actually prefer the coupé version. Don't get me wrong: That Spyder is an unbelievably gorgeous car, but... it seems to me that even Ferraris are subject to that old rule that states that you should buy the roadster or convertible that was designed to be a roadster or convertible from the get go. Not a coupé or sedan the factory took a hacksaw to and turned into an open-top car.

    • @Philcopson

      I think you're right: open cars look pretty, but they don't look purposeful or dramatic. Same thing with the E-type Jag - the Series 1 Coupe looks like a bullet on wheels, but the Roadster looks like a toy. (Now - where can I get me a roof for my Spider?)

    This guy knows almost nothing about this car. All Spyder’s that left Ferrari we’re actually Berlinetta or hard tops. Ferrari just took the 122 to Barchetta to chop into a Spyder or convertible. You can still send your Berlinetta to Barchetta and convert to a Spyder. The only thing is they will not change the model to a GTS. It will always be a GTB like it was originally. However it’s smart to convert even though still a GTB as it will automatically increase in value more than you paid to convert, but never appreciate like an original GTS. The Columbo engine is absolutely the best sound that ever came from any Ferrari, but unfortunately they are lousy performer’s in this day. Actually embarrassing. My Ferrari you have to rev to over 7 grand just to slightly overtake an inferior American car among many others. You can also take to Ferrari to increase horsepower and the spongy suspension that roll’s badly. If you do all of these things at Ferrari, you still have just an average car. However the sound of a Daytona is priceless.

    Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars, trucks and busses including
    classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia
    :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel
    supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state
    operated central gas station per city or county. They even plan to
    reduce the pump speed of public gas stations from 20 litre per
    minute to only 2 litre per minute to punish owners of combustion
    cars....from 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned
    too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and
    gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on....
    So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They
    even created a completely new kind of crime here in Germany, called
    emissions and smoke crime. "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbot" in German :-(((/////
