This guy knows nothing about his cars. He has great stuff but he’s a terrible guest because he’s the typical rich guy who accumulates cars to score clout but doesn’t know a thing about them. Some of Jays guests are awesome because the guys really nerd out on their cars and know tiny details even Jay doesn’t know. But when Lee is there you can tell he’s just a total ignoramus poseur. Every single time he’s on it’s the same.
My grandfather bought a new Ferrari 365gtb/4 in 1973 when he was 65 as retirement gift to himself. He was a very physically fit man, he looked and acted much younger, so seeing an “old” man in such a car wasn’t that odd. I remember the day he brought it over to my parents house so we could all go for rides, it was the most beautiful car I’d ever seen. That and the Miura are my favorite all time cars. It was black with a black and red interior with the black and red special “Daytona” seats. I remember my mother being shocked that the car cost the outrageous sum of $23,000 (which is about $153,000 in today’s money), which was actually a lot of money back then. We lived in coastal Oregon where there were lots of great driving roads, and my grandfather took it up to 140 and held it there for about 5 minutes, after he made me promise not to tell my parents. That became a habit with us, he would often take me for high speed runs when he drove out from Portland to see us. I was 8 in 1973, and I remember everything about that car vividly. He kept it until he died at age 76, then it became my fathers car, which he held onto until the cost of keeping it in top shape was just too much. I drove it countless times, the steering was a bit heavy at parking speeds, but otherwise it was a mind blowing experience to drive it. The only downside was that I often got followed by strangers, some who would literally follow me to my house, so I had to keep driving until I lost them. They could’ve just wanted to talk about the car, or they could’ve wanted to kill me and take the car, I never was sure. It was extremely depressing when it got sold, but my father did get a sizable amount for it that made his retirement much easier.s
That's a really nice story. I like that you didn't just throw it in the back yard after it got too costly to maintain. You had a great run with it, got all the joy you could ask from it and then it went to someone else for them to experience the same thing. It's a suiting end to your story that you helped the car continue a great life and it helped your father have a decent life after retirement.
@@pandras8312 It wasn’t lost on our family what a stunning car it was, how rare it was, and how much it was worth. The values of these cars were all over the place in the past decades. In 1973 the OPEC oil crisis hit, making gas suddenly extremely expensive. For the rest of the 70’s these cars weren’t worth much more than their sticker price new. My father has a newspaper ad from 1978 from someone looking to sell a Ferrari 365gts/4 and asking $15,000. By the time my father sold it in 2014 he got $375,000 for it.
A guy about my mom's age (in Fullerton, California) had a Ferrari Lusso, and when I got to know him a little, about 15 years ago, he did tell me that someone followed him to the house, and started talking to him. Things turned out as the guy was local, and had a Shelby collection that he wanted to show him. And yes, I think that Gary went over to his house to see it.
I saw Jay help fix a Dusenberg at BJ one year, the car was in the staging area outside waiting to go up on stage. Jay and the owner were talking and next thing you know someone brought over some tools, they opened the hood, Jay had it fixed in about 5 minutes. Jay's love for automobiles is always evident and his knowledge is remarkable. The Daytona is without a doubt my favorite all time car, great episode.
"Hey, let's just casually take my Daytona out for a rip." "Sure." 😂 I think these are the only two guys on the planet who could do this without making me jealous/angry. Thanks Jay, David and crew for a great episode! ✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
Cars really were at their aesthetic peak late 1960s early 1970s …. The design is a work of stunning art, the performance exhilarating, the sound a mechanical symphony to the ears.
When I was 21 years old in 1977 I went for my first big driving holiday, from my remote northern Canada town through the western states; I can recall sitting by the Pacific Coast Highway near Santa Monica one day watching all the neat cars coming and going, heaven for a kid like me who had been a car nut since childhood but grew up in a place where you just didn't see anything exotic. Anyway, along comes this beautiful arrest-me-red GTS Daytona, top down on a sunny California day, and I will never forget the sight and sound of that car. I would see one more Daytona in my lifetime, a green coupe in downtown Vancouver in 1979, and that sight and sound will also be there forever - beautiful cars.
Jay said, "Somebody 6' 5" could drive this car." The first Cannonball Run in November 1971, Brock Yates and Dan Gurney, who was 6' 2", drove a Daytona coupe from New York to Redondo Beach in just under 36 hours winning the event. With a perfectly straight face, Gurney said, "We never went over 175mph." But after getting a ticket (the only one they got) in Arizona, just to see how fast it would go, Gurney took it up to 172 and said it was rock steady.
Gurney was full of sh*t. No tires existed at that time that could spend hours at 175mph without a blowout. It was also not possible to find a stretch of road anywhere that would allow those speeds for more than 50 miles or so. At NORMAL highway speeds TODAY the trip is only 42 hours, so to save another 6 hours would not require anywhere near those speeds.
I 'm 75 and always loved the gated shifter. I still love it but my enthusiasm was slightly diminished when I learned they started because of weak linkage
@@stanleymasterson1135 42 hours is 65 average. Yates/Gurney averaged 100 mph. Google: 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX as fitted to Daytona. Speed rating 168 mph, so may not be so 'full of sh*t. I don't recall him saying 'hours at a time'. Besides, the traffic was much lighter then, so higher averages. I drove from LA to Miami in '89, with mostly empty interstate along the way, doing 90/100 for hours.
@@moyadapne968 yes I made it from Michigan to Florida overnight in 1990..... 1200 miles in 12 hours with my old school radar detector and my new 5 speed Camaro.
oh, yes! The famous J Leno drive all over the lane markings! That's OK he has a following car and a car ahead of him to make sure he doesn't go right off the road! Ha ha ha
Back in 1975, when I was racing in the SCCA, a Chicago guy named John Cooper had a Daytona coupe. One Sunday, I was standing in the pits at Blackhawk Farms Raceway and John was sitting in the Daytona, waiting to lead the pace lap for the next race. He motioned over to me, rolled the window down and said, "Hop in!". I jumped in, belted up, and watch him flip switches, hearing the fuel pumps come on, a ticking and beeping sound, and then he hit the starter and the V12 roared to life. I was thrilled! The starter waved him out and the field lined up behind him as we drove around the course. So smooth and wonderful was the ride, with that great sound. At the last corner, he floored it and we rocketed about 100 yards and then ducked into the pits as the racers roared by. I thanked him profusely and will never forget my 1.9 mile ride in a Daytona. About a year later, Mark Donohue mentioned in his book, "The Unfair Advantage", that Roger Penske had bought a Daytona when they were working with Ferrari. He said, "I couldn't believe it, $25,000 for a car!". Wonder where that car is today.
Mr. Lee, thank you once again for sharing another stunning car from your incredible and unique collection. The Ferrari 365 GTS/4 is a top 10 car for me and I never get tired of seeing owners talking about them and driving them.
During the COVID-19 fiasco I look forward to Jay Leno‘s videos they literally got me through that entire nightmare. I had the pleasure of seeing Jay Leno live in Lake Tahoe back in the late 80s early 90s He put on quite an enjoyable show very talented man.
I like the way David really ask questions to Jay and want’s his honest opinion. It really matters to him wich I can understand. Jay is so knowledgeable. They became real friends and have a lot of respect for each other. Great to see that.
Am 25 years old. And watching this old car being explain to detail with actual memories by the host . It's very refreshing.. I feel left out wasn't born at that time
I'll probably never see, let alone drive a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona but it is great to hear two proper car enthusiasts discussing this amazing car/work of art. Thank you David & Jay. Very much appreciated. Stay safe, stay special.
Just legendary. Years ago, my brother, and Italian car master mechanic, worked on a couple of Daytona's owned by a client. One had a tweaked engine with wide Cromodora Daytona wheels. Just moving the car in the shop just off idle, the sticky Gatorbacks wanted to break loose. Awe-inspiring.
Can't believe how generous that guy is to share his collection with us. And I'm pretty sure he drives all his cars - not hoarded away waiting for them to appreciate.
Okay Jay and David are both car guys, and living our fantasies for us. Thank you gentlemen for generously sharing these experiences with us. Just great. Hats off to both of you.
David Lee making Jay's dream of driving a GTS come true, hope the GTS lived up to his expectations...mad respect! Can't wait for Jay to drive an 812 GTS. What a car and what a story about Miami Vice as well as all the history too.
Honestly, Jay Leno is an international treasure. The fact that he is recovering from his accident, persevering, and providing us with great content is a testament to his resilience and dedication
One of the best looking cars of all time. I really enjoy how the way Jay reviews cars. He breaks it all down so car people and non-car people can follow along comfortably. He is never really negative, and can appreciate what a car represents (could be a super car or something that was cheap when new). Well done sir.
Thank you Mr. Leno for another great history lesson, I’ve noticed whenever you feel like doing a Ferrari review, you call your good friend, David Lee who has an awesome Ferrari collection. You both have excellent chemistry together 🙏🏽
To be truthful I sometimes feel jaded watching the ultra rich in ultra rich cars but Jay brings it down to earth every time. David you scored a real beauty here. Cheers 🇨🇦
I was walking around Hollywood one day in 1969, just to take a look, and wandered into Hollywood Sports Cars. I’m 6’7”, and I opened up a 365GTB and sat in it just to see if I could fit. I did, but just barely, and remember pulling on that peculiar little door latch! The sticker said $19,000-something! I never got the chance to become an “enthusiast” before things got totally out of control, but I always thought of the Daytona and the 275GTS as the ones I would have really liked to have had. I clearly remember thinking of the 275GTS as what the Fiat 124s I was seeing everywhere “ought to be”.
Thanks for bringing this fantastic car to us. This has always been my ultimate dream car. I was 16 in '69 when Road & Track had a red Daytona coupe on the cover, saying it was the fastest car they had ever tested, at 175 mph! I've been in love ever since. I completely concur with your sentiments about the car, I've never seen another Ferrari I lusted for like this one, it was the pinnacle of the front engine Ferraris. By the way, that car was listed at $20,000 and change,
Remember going to the local cinema ( Kidderminster , UK) and watching The Gumball Rally , with Michael Sarazin driving AC Cobra and his mate driving against him in the Ferrari 365 GTS/ 4 Daytona . Fun film , battling against the then 55mph in the USA at the time.
This is PURE JAY LENO. You know he’s enjoying himself, but there’s REAL ENJOYMENT in driving a vehicle like this and ANALYZING what’s going on with the car. Love the SOUND this Ferrari creates, a MAJOR PART of how the car makes the driver FEEL…!
My son.has been working and playing in a new form of racing. It is called drifting. It takes talent experience and money money money. That means he lives in his car or his g ar age. But he is having fun fun fun fun. I help when I can. CARS IS A GREAT ADDICTION AT ANY AGE. I am 70 and my husband and I love watching your car show. Thanks. DERRYL AND PATSY HIMEL
FABULOUS ! 365cc per cylinder is just less than 4.4 litres. Beautiful 2 valve hemi, with dry sump. Wonderful body in hardtop as well 170+mph in all the road tests. Autocar reviewed it ten years after their first roadtest and declared it "Still the Greatest" ! Classic statement from Autocar..... "All our worries went up in smoke as we let out the clutch..." or words to that effect. They also added, that the Daytona Coupe, was faster in the midrange than the original road test figures. It was like a fine wine......
Wow Jay. Back to what I love. I loved this car in the magazines before Miami Vice. I was waiting for this. A small problem and Wham! Mr.Lees car was fixed. Love it .I would like to see more Ferrari's from this era. Wonderful Jay.😋😋♥♥🔥🔥😎😎
Best we had in my immediate neighborhood was an air cooled 911, but back then, when we were kids they weren't crazy for the air cooled ones yet. I never saw it move, last I heard it sold a bit ago for an insane amount of money.
Next to the Miura and, God forgive me, the early British E-type coupe, it's probably the most beautiful car ever made. Not the cheap looking tacky stuff Ferrari and the like produced the last 30 years. Cars like these had style and a soul.
My dad ran a pokey little garage in the English Midlands, and one of these used to come in regularly. 1972 GTB/4. The owner didn't drive it that often so he used to give it to my dad to drive, sometimes for a fortnight. Never felt more cool sitting in the passenger seat of that thing, although apparently it felt like a truck when not up to speed.
Owner: Is this the way it's supposed to sound? Ferrari Technician: Yep! Jay: There's something not right. Jay's team: I got a loose wire Boss. Engine: Perrrrrrrrr Jay: Now she's working! Just the greatest show on Earth.
If you pay close attention to the pilot episode of Miami Vice, the first time we see Crockett sat in the Daytona, it is in fact a real one with a screen presence of about 10 seconds. After that, it's all Corvette based replicas and a couple of Testarossa - apart from one episode in season two where a rich lawyer (John Heard) also has a rather lovely, genuine Daytona in yellow.
Its a good thing that less expensive cars were used in actual filming because repeated use as TV or movie cars often damages them. Attaching heavy cameras and other filming equipment means putting various braces against the body lol!
alot of people dont know that in the testrrossa era they has 2 real testarossas and a fake one, there was one stock real one they used in most scenes, and the other one had a bunch of camera equipment to film the interior shots while driving, the fake was for the stunt scenes where they used a ford powered detomasso pantera to do risky stuff,
As I heard it, The production wanted a real Ferrari and wanted Ferrari to give them one as product placement. Ferrari refused because they didn’t want their car associated with the drug trade. But after the show became a huge hit, they changed their mind, yet demanded proof that the replica they were using would be destroyed. So they decided to blow it to pieces on camera.
In the early '80s there was a Daytona Coupe that parked on the street in my condo neighborhood in Virginia. Red, some rust, just a driver. This was about the time just before prices started to really take off. I ended up getting a '69 Maserati Ghibli in '87, 4.7L grey-market import. Big heavy car, no power steering, drove like an elegant truck. Times were simpler then.
Thanks again for a wonderful episode. That's one of my favorite Ferraris. Did you know when Brock Yates had the first cannonball run he and Dan Gurney drove one across the country at breakneck speeds. And I'm sure you've seen the classic movie gumball rally. There's a red Ferrari Daytona spider driven by Raul Julia playing the suave formula one driver And before he starts the engine a classic scene is when he says to his passenger "the first thing you've got to know about Italian driving. It makes no difference what's behind you (grabs the rearview mirror pulls it off the windshield and throws it off the car) . Only what's in front of you! And thank David Lee for availing his collection for us and he's pretty cool driving these cars and not treating them like some portfolio investment garage queen. I saw another episode with Nicole Johnson and she visited Lynn park a.k.a. "Mr. cobra" and he is the same way He drives them all And glad you were OK after that horrible burn they really worked miracles
I always remember the 427 Cobra out dragging the Ferrari Daytona Spyder as they exit the L.A. river heading towards Long Beach in that movie(The Gumball Rally).
Thanks to both David Lee and Jay Leno for an interesting opportunity to hear two true automotive collectors discuss openly this Ferrari. It is not often a discussion like this is recorded.
I also agree with Jay and David, i am 25 years old but i love the old gauges. I just prefer pressing on buttons instead of touching on a screen where you have to look instead of looking on the road.
I consider this to be a 60's car as Jay was saying and I think that was the best and last era of true sports cars and my favorite Ferrari was the 250GT and this 365 GTS is really nice too. Modern cars are technically impressive but for the pure fun of driving and connecting with the machine and feeling the thrill of driving, this is the type of car you want to be have imo. A big thanks to David and Jay for taking us out for a spin with them - very cool!
I love that Jay is diagnosing and fixing David Lee's car.

Yeah, and what's ironic is that Jay gets heckled for not owing any Ferraris, but of course that's his personal choice.
Obviously David should have had Jay vet the car before he got hosed for a car with slipping clutch.
Now it just needs a clutch job

Beautiful Car! Easy fix at the end by Jay. Mr. Lee, always a respectful man. It doesn't get much better!
Great engine sound! Loved the portugueses license plate!
Thanks David and Jay for showing us this beautiful Ferrari. It sure sounds good!

David is Jay's best overall guest. Love it when he visits
Can't believe how generous that guy is to share his collection with us. And I'm pretty sure he drives all his cars - not hoarded away waiting for them to appreciate.
hmmm...not 😂
@@memphis_sean8169 sorry, I forgot you were the better guest
That is my favorite Ferrari. Beautiful car.
The most beautiful car ever built. IMO. #1 !!!!!
Probably my favorite car of all time with my favorite collectors in the seat.
Tremendous episode. Loved every frame.

Jay is becoming a Ferrari guy thanks to David. He is trying to conceal how much he loves him, but he can't. David is his son figure. Thank You gents!
Grotesque color
His son figure? Yea I think taken it a lil too far 😆
My all time favourite car. I have a 1/18th Die Cast model exactly the same as this I've had since I was very young. Beautiful car
Honestly, Jay Leno is an international treasure. The fact that he is recovering from his accident, persevering, and providing us with great content is a testament to his resilience and dedication
I agree, but are you going to say that on all of his videos, copy and paste style?
@@joemamajohnsonquietstorm2690 Yup.
In my opinion, one of if not the, most beautiful cars ever created.
One of the best looking cars of all time. I really enjoy how the way Jay reviews cars. He breaks it all down so car people and non-car people can follow along comfortably. He is never really negative, and can appreciate what a car represents (could be a super car or something that was cheap when new). Well done sir.
Boring wedge
The David Lee episodes are my favorites... and it's not even close.
Thank you Mr. Leno for another great history lesson, I’ve noticed whenever you feel like doing a Ferrari review, you call your good friend, David Lee who has an awesome Ferrari collection. You both have excellent chemistry together 🙏🏽
I love how the in general the Asian culture is so respectful towards older people. David is always humble around Jay and asks lots of questions.
Such a beautiful car and wonderful sound!
My absolute favorite classic car! Best episode for me so far!
Man David has some sweet cars! Always love seeing his collection. Glad you’re doing well Jay! 🙏🏼
One of the very few Ferraris that I don't care for. But as always, thanks for sharing her with us David and Jay!
The sound this car makes is divine.
To be truthful I sometimes feel jaded watching the ultra rich in ultra rich cars but Jay brings it down to earth every time.
David you scored a real beauty here.
Cheers 🇨🇦
I just love watching Jay do this. It makes my heart sing. I never sat in a car like these but wow are they beautiful.
Thanks, Jay and David for a look back at the past with a classic V12 Daytona
Great Vid. Thanks Jay and David. Free repair on the alternator but that clutch is going to make up for it. Beautiful rare car.
probably just quick adjustment
one of the best, if not THE best Ferrari ever built. Such an iconic car ❤🔥

It seemed as if David was the interviewer. He really respects you Jay, and we do too.

By the way, that car was listed at $20,000 and change,
Thank You,Mr.Jay Leno& Mr.David Lee,so nice car.
Franco : And now my friend, the first-a rule of Italian driving. What's-a behind me is not important.
I love the comedy chemistry between the two!! David!! You convinced me, with this fave of yours…. I’m getting into watch making!!
Such an iconic car. It’s absolutely stunning in every way.
Have seen a few, at shows but still stop and stare when I see one. Just perfect!
In my top two of desirable cars, would even settle for a coupe!
The best Leno's Garage yet! That sound!
Not a big Ferrari fan, however the sound, look And color of that classic is an exception. Mr. Lee always brings some cool cars.
Slipping clutch & all, this car is the most beautiful thing. And it seems like Jay truly respects David with the knowledge he shared. Nice.
Thanks to Mr. Lee for sharing his wonderful Daytona with us.
Wonderful body in hardtop as well
170+mph in all the road tests.
Love your child like energy with these great cars Jay. You are a gift to us all.
I was introduced to this car in GTA Vice City, back in 2009 when I first played it. It was the ‘Stinger’ convertible car.
Simple lines, one of the most beautiful cars ever produced.......
thank you david from bringing all these gems to the jay studio :D
When I was a kid, a person in my town had a 1970 coupe. The sound was unbelievable. Still one of my first picks of classics I would love to own.
Best we had in my immediate neighborhood was an air cooled 911, but back then, when we were kids they weren't crazy for the air cooled ones yet. I never saw it move, last I heard it sold a bit ago for an insane amount of money.
It's like a Harley. You know immediately when you hear that engine what's coming around the corner. Like music to the ears.
and your home town was Miami 😅
I was fortunate enough todriven this car belonging to one of my customers was 1 of. My favorite. Heavy clutch, heavy steering lots of fun.
Owner: Is this the way it's supposed to sound?
Ferrari Technician: Yep!
Jay: There's something not right.
Jay's team: I got a loose wire Boss.
Engine: Perrrrrrrrr
Jay: Now she's working!
Just the greatest show on Earth.
This is the reason people love Jay, simple fix, plain language.that everyone understands and feels comfortable with!!!
Attaching heavy cameras and other filming equipment means putting various braces against the body lol!
alot of people dont know that in the testrrossa era they has 2 real testarossas and a fake one,
there was one stock real one they used in most scenes, and the other one had a bunch of camera equipment to film the interior shots while driving,
the fake was for the stunt scenes where they used a ford powered detomasso pantera to do risky stuff,
As I heard it, The production wanted a real Ferrari and wanted Ferrari to give them one as product placement. Ferrari refused because they didn’t want their car associated with the drug trade. But after the show became a huge hit, they changed their mind, yet demanded proof that the replica they were using would be destroyed. So they decided to blow it to pieces on camera.
The Daytona is such a beautiful car. How cool
David Lee is the most down to earth and friendliest guy in the car scene ! 👍 Great video Mr. Leno !!
Another sexy car that I probably will never have an opportunity to sit in let alone drive featured on this channel. Great episode, thanks Jay.

I love the chemistry between David Lee and Jay Leno, it always becomes more of a conversation about the car instead of an interview with these two.
Marchand
Thanks again for a wonderful episode. That's one of my favorite Ferraris. Did you know when Brock Yates had the first cannonball run he and Dan Gurney drove one across the country at breakneck speeds.
And I'm sure you've seen the classic movie gumball rally. There's a red Ferrari Daytona spider driven by Raul Julia playing the suave formula one driver
And before he starts the engine a classic scene is when he says to his passenger "the first thing you've got to know about Italian driving.
"Mr. cobra" and he is the same way
He drives them all
And glad you were OK after that horrible burn they really worked miracles
I always remember the 427 Cobra out dragging the Ferrari Daytona Spyder as they exit the L.A. river heading towards Long Beach in that movie(The Gumball Rally).
That car sounds SO good, I heard it before I saw it, VERY NICE!!!
Thanks to both David Lee and Jay Leno for an interesting opportunity to hear two true automotive collectors discuss openly this Ferrari. It is not often a discussion like this is recorded.

I think we all love David Lee and videos with Jay are the best. More please. Also, just subscribed to David Lee's channel as well.
No, I can't stand David
He's terrible
I also agree with Jay and David, i am 25 years old but i love the old gauges. I just prefer pressing on buttons instead of touching on a screen where you have to look instead of looking on the road.
Love David Lee! Thanks for another great start to the week Jay 👍
Gumball! This Ferrari's greatest starring role...
