What a beautiful racecar.....and that engine note! Randy Pobst rocks. That guy knows how to go fast and he's always so knowledgeable. Great video!
I was passing through Colorado Springs on vacation the week of the hillclimb this year. I had just days before been watching some of Randy's videos on last year's climb. My daughter and I were having breakfast at Bon Ton's Cafe, and in walks this guy wearing all kinds of Porsche clothing. I did a double take and said to my daughter - "I think Randy Pobst just walked in." Of course she said who the heck is that? But it was kind of the highlight of my vacation. Randy and Jay, two of the most awesome car guys ever.
You missed the opportunity to do the old Rickles/Sinatra bit; have Randy come over to the table and say, _"Hi, Jon!"_ and you go. _"Not now, Pobst! Can't you see I'm eating?"_ - and, then, Randy has you tossed out "gently". 😂😂
Great episode Jay. Between Randy’s passion for this car and Jay pulling over for Randy to drive- may be my favorite now. Two entertaining experts. I liked it even more than than the Evo Dino! More content with Randy in racecars! Thx
Such an amazing video! I would have never thought that Randy would love the poor little 914, out of all the cars that I've seen him drive. He was really able to express how all 914 owners feel about their cars. I have one myself and have been working on it since the late 90s. I recently got to drive it on the road again for the first time since 99 it was absolutely incredible experience. My 914 now has a modernish VW 1.8t engine with a big turbo in it, all going through a boxster transmission with a gt2 shifter, it's making about 320+hp and is a total rocket. It can be driven totally normal till 3000rpm but after 5000rpm watch out as it explodes down the road right to the 8000rpm redline. I weighed it at my work and it was only 2080 pounds after all of my modifications.
@@thetachi5 I have a couple vids on my youtube page if you click on my icon. I just blew up the rear axle and have a replacement 930CV coming. I gave it the beans in third and it chirped the tire for a moment and then the clutch slipped, so I'll be upgrading that shortly.
Jay I love all of these. But this guy truly loves his ride. You open it up and he just smiles no worry no regret he loves this car as a passenger as much as a driver. And knows its gonna take anything you give it and keep going. Passion. And what a great example I am truly envious.
Big Randy was one of the only professional sports car drivers that came up through autocross and not in karting. So fitting that he comes on with a 914.
Interesting that you should bring that up. I used to compete against Randy in autocross in south Florida many years ago. I never did beat him, even if he showed up in a borrowed car he'd never driven with mismatched tires.
That sound.... Just magic. Probably one of the best engine sounds I ever heard. And just amazing that compared to many other test drives Jay does this is a long and pretty thorough. This car can handle it.
I owned a 1969 4cyl for a bit back in my 20s (1990s). After yanking the fuel injection, which was horrible, and putting in a 4 stack set of very illegal for CA Dellorto's, it really came to life! Intake noise was fantastic. Things I hated: Shifting was just awful. The long linkage bar between the stick and the transmission, along with the long shift cable that wrapped around from the rear towards the front of the transmission, which was behind the engine, really made fast shifting impossible. And the gearbox, because of the long linkage was just so vague. Also, getting into reverse was a pain. Push down on the shifter, then left and up if I remember correctly. Heat exchangers. I lived in CA, so not a huge deal, but they never worked well. Electrical. It was in bad shape when I got it and just kept getting worse, eventually it was the demise of the car. In the end, the car went to my uncle who pulled the engine and put it in a dune buggy. Not sure what happened to the chassis. :( Suspension was horridly stiff in the '69. It was great in the turns, but for every day driving it was miserable. They did adjust the rear suspension rate on the '70 models if I remember correctly. Things I loved: Handling was unsurpassed. I have never driven a car that handles better than the 914. So neutral. Once going on a 300 degree onramp in the rain, the back end kicked out. It took just a slight steering adjustment and it was back on track. I was so impressed that I did it on purpose once more just to see if I was imagining things. I wasn't. As to the suspension, it was 911 front, and the trailing arms were from a VW 412. It got the job done! The top came off! It stored nicely in the rear deck and was reasonably water tight when the rain came (for a 1969!). Looks. I've always loved the looks. Still do. I'd love to get one as a retirement car, but they are either overpriced or require a full restoration. Then again, I'm not sure if my back could handle it! Thanks for a great episode, Jay!
Funny thing about the very sloppy shifting - Put about 100K on my 914-6 and never missed a shift. Once you got used to where the gears were it was just fine. I know many who took a test drive didn’t like the shifter or the pattern, but it just worked. So well that I never did the upgrade to the newer linkage on my car. Best driver’s car I ever owned without question.
@J F About the shifting … Reverse is simply straight up from 1st, no lockout whatsoever. It’s very easy, too easy actually, to get into reverse. Though I wouldn’t call it “awful”, it’s true the early cars from ’70 to ’72 (there wasn’t a 1969 model year) had a somewhat vague shift linkage. It was dramatically improved on the 4-cylinder models starting with the ’73 model year.
Love this episode 😍. As a kid in the 1970s my uncle had a 914 that I remember cruising around in. I've always liked this car based on those memories. That 914-6 is a beast!!!
I ALWAYS liked the aesthetics of the 914. As an early teen, the car’s lines struck me as exotic. Unfortunately, I never had an opportunity to drive one. Until… In 1983, my then girlfriend bought an orange 1971 914-4. My girlfriend’s mechanic yanked the stock engine out, replacing it with the later 2.0 liter. Fuel injection was supplanted by 2 42mm (?) Dellorto dual carburetors. New cams and valves (sodium filled) completed the transformation. So THIS was my first experience with a 914! What a thrill. My friend has a 1997 911 Carrera. I’ve accompanied him to a few Porsche shows each year. (PorscheWerke in Monterey this past Summer) He is continually annoyed with me as I always gravitate to the 914 entrants’ cars instead of the 911s. I don’t care. First loves (more ways than one) always get primacy of place. I recently purchased a front mid-engined 2001 Honda S2000. I was pleased to have it mentioned favorably during this episode. Thank you, Randy, for sharing your knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm. Safe travels. ✌🏻
That raw metallic engine noise is just pure delight to my ears, I adore these little 914s and just like the boxsters now it's criminally underrated and unjustly looked down on by a lot of 911 snobs.
Jay leno is the best car guy EVER!! Ive been watching his vids every week for years. We all age and have different views and some stuff from the past is a bit cringy.
I remember the first time I experienced one of these. Seeing one out run a 911 with ease up the hill from turn 5 at Road America at a vintage race really opened my eyes to how cool these are!!
Maybe I'm just stoned, but Randy gives me a old vibe of my childhood. Telling my own stories and explaining my experiences just like he did in this video was an everyday occurrence when I was picked up from school by my mother or father.
I hope Jay has more guests like this. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, comfortable in front of the camera. The car is interesting but the guest/car combo makes this an engaging watch.
Bartending at 18 years old. A simpler world I wish I could experience. This guy is among the better guests, and this episode is among the best as well.
Randy Pobst: The only driver that can constantly & consistently push a car's limits while smiling & laughing; I just listen to his vids rather than music.LEGEND
How does Randy not have a show, very few people are as talented and enthusiastic as him. Crazy car I had no idea these existed, if all of those cars had a decent engine they would have been a big success.
The problem is Porsche fans only want a 911 as their top car/race car. Remember when they brought out the 928 which was supposed to be the 911 replacement. Porsche fans still wanted the 911 at the top of the line. Luckily Porsche has been able to tweak that design to get a fantastic performance car but it also caused the company to nearly go under. The cheaper cars like the 914 and later the Boxer along with some of their other less sporty cars like SUVs saved Porsche's bacon.
Love Randy, became a fan after watching him race in the old World Challenge series driving Porsches and Audis. Such an accomplished driver, knowledgeable and very likable. This episode is such a pleasure to watch.
I have ALWAYS loved the 914 Porsches! They just scream low COG and amazing handling. To see one in this iteration just blows me away! Thanks so much Jay.
That was a gift from god for a former 914 owner! What a car! I've driven several different sports cars over the years, English, Italian, German...and the 914 1.7 I owned was hands-down the best. No, the fuel-injected 1.7 didn't have enough power (is there ever enough power?) but with the 5-speed close ratio box, it got up and going pretty good. I got a top speed run of 117mph from mine, and it was a well-used car at that point. I worked nights at the time and one night on the way to work a cop pulled me over, clocked me at 90 and I'd had no idea I was going that fast. Pays to be a nurse, I was in my scrubs and he gave me a bit of professional courtesy and let me off the hook. I made a sharp left turn on a wet corner and spun the car a complete 360, wound up pointing in the direction I wanted and just kept on going. Only do that in a mid-engine car. Thanks Jay, you've made this old goat feel young again!
Same here! I was 20 years old living in Seattle and I purchased a pre-owned 1976 914 2.0 in 1978, and absolutely loved it. Got pulled over by the Washington State Patrol twice, once going up into the mountains and another time while comming along side and playing with a Lotus Europa. Got pulled over and in both cases the officer left me off the hook! Also had a gourgeous Alfa Spider that I was truly in love with! God I miss those days! Wanna go back!!!
I woke up this morning with typical Monday Dread. Then, I saw that this week's car is the 914-6, one of my favourite cars ever. Then Pobst, my favourite driver/car raconteur ever, comes walking out. You guys (all of you involved) not only improved my Monday, but made my week! Thanks, y'all!✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
Have you ever owned one? Sold my real 914-6, which had a modded 2.4 … and a good suspension … never missed it! But you can go into a corner, with little brakes (they’re crap anyhow) … and just yank the wheel. It is pretty cool
@@chriscarbaugh3936 sadly, no. I've had the opportunity to drive one, and I thought it was the perfect match between my Volkswagen and Porsche obsessions (when I got priced out of Porsches, hey, VWs!). I've always loved their quirky, red-headed stepchild relationship with Porschephiles!
These are twin plugged as well. You can make out the twin coils and the big dizzy when Jay is under the “hood”. Fun cars, but the 901 shifts very poorly!
I always thought these were beautiful little cars. A true SPORTS car. Nothing frivolous in the design or execution. These always captured my imagination more than the more commonly seen 911.
I remember when the 914 was introduced at my local VW dealership Renfro Motors in Orange, CA and they gave away flower shaped stickers and we all lined up to get one. As a kid I didn’t understand the controversy about VW vs Porsche all I knew was I liked the car just like the way I loved the Karman Ghia. My first car in 1978 was a 1966 VW bug and there’s nothing like like the experience of your first car. I paid $900 for the car and my insurance was $1,100. The sense of freedom of your first car was amazing and now that the government is doing all they can to get rid of the ICE cars it’s heartbreaking because the truth is it’s all about controlling all aspects of daily life including your freedom of movement.
I've always loved the 914, and I remember when they were dirt cheap, but I still couldn't afford them or the upkeep. Such a joy to see the car being driven the way it should be and appreciated.
Randy is such a great person. He's so honest and willing to listen. Watch the way he drives a modern Hypercar. Not many people have a feel for every generation of car, single seater, classic car etc he can drive it at 10/10. J Leno gave Randy the wheel, because he trusts him 100 percent.
I think the Porsche 914 is a beautiful design. So cool that it came in at position 6 at Le Mans in 1970. I have 6 - 914's in my Hot Wheels collection, including car #40, which I believe is a model of the Le mans 6th place car. I graduated from High School in 1970, wish I could have bought one of these at this time! I always watch for this model in diecast and collect them. Glad you featured this car. I own a 2006 Porsche Boxster S and it is a wonderful driving experience. It is balanced and a blast to drive every day (except for winter, here in the Midwest). I understand that people say that it isn’t really a Porsche (911). 914’s are neat and a great thing that broke Porsche out of their singular way of thinking. Thank you Jay and Randy for another interest video.
Have a niece who had just received her drivers permit a few years ago. She was the typical extremely nervous and inexperienced driver. The first time she backs out of a parking space she slams into a freshly restored vintage porsche 914. Her debut driving experience was very memorable, and very expensive!
In the late '70s, I drove one of these "factory-built beasts" at Elkhart Lake. In a word...!!!!WOW!!!! They handle like it's on rails. They're ridiculously quick & the best car in corners I've ever driven. With modern compound track tires, it must be insanely agile in the chicanes & hair-pins. 🙂 Best regards, Ben

Our neighbor Vic Meyer, had a Porsche 914-6 that he raced. I remember him take that car around the street corners in our town, Pekin, Il. What an amazing and under appreciated car the 914 was.
I think this is one of my favorite episodes. Two of my favorite You Tubers all in 1 place 👍🏻 the 914-6 even the non race version was an amazing car that was never allowed to improve itself. The balance of that car was far ahead of it’s time. I love how Jay commented on his test drive about Americans not wanting to rev it too high which he really doesn’t, then Randy jumps in and you KNOW what’s coming! Two really wonderful car guys for sure. Excellent episode! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Randy is one of the best out there. Glad I got to meet him at Laguna Seca some years ago when he was still driving a Mazda 6 in the Speed World Challenge.
Great video, knew a guy with a 914-6, did some SCCA racing with it. The reason for the dog leg shift pattern, with first being down and in, is because on the track, first is hardly ever used. Second through fifth are in the H pattern. Not great for drag racing, but perfect on a road course.
probably one of the best conversations I have ever heard on this channel. not too many people who can keep up with Jay, and teach him some things about these cars. I was a kid when these cars came out, and I remember how unpopular they were here. even looking at it today, it is not an attractive car, especially from a time of so much beautiful competition. I own a Porsche now, and still think this one is unattractive. its the front, the nose. well, the rear is nothing to look at either. and the profile, OMG. you would have to drive it- no, track it, to love it. a true gem, and even bit of a missing link, in the progression of motor sports, and the auto industry. good video. great content. love it.

You have to appreciate Randy Pobst. He absolutely loves everything about his car. Incredibly down to Earth!
This was one of the best episodes ever. Randy not afraid to say it like it is!
Great episode Jay. Between Randy’s passion for this car and Jay pulling over for Randy to drive- may be my favorite now. Two entertaining experts. I liked it even more than than the Evo Dino! More content with Randy in racecars! Thx
Three legends- Jay, Randy, and the 914-6 GT. This is absolutely the kind of stuff that I subscribed to see.
Jay is so humble and considerate. He knew letting Randy drive it was the way to let this car (and Randy) show off.
That’s awesome.
Very cool. Congrats on getting it back on the road.
Would absolutely love to see this in action if you begin to post on RUclips
@@thetachi5 I have a couple vids on my youtube page if you click on my icon. I just blew up the rear axle and have a replacement 930CV coming. I gave it the beans in third and it chirped the tire for a moment and then the clutch slipped, so I'll be upgrading that shortly.
914 is great specially with a bit extra power!
Jay I love all of these. But this guy truly loves his ride. You open it up and he just smiles no worry no regret he loves this car as a passenger as much as a driver. And knows its gonna take anything you give it and keep going. Passion.
And what a great example I am truly envious.
The 914 is just a great car. We own two - a /4 and a /6 GT rebuild.
People smile when they see you on the street!
A video with Jay and Randy is literally the GOATs squaring up. And who wins? We all do.
INDEED!
Loved hearing the revs when Randy took the wheel!
I could listen to Jay and Randy go back and forth all day. There’s a whole lot of auto knowledge between those two fellas.
Big Randy was one of the only professional sports car drivers that came up through autocross and not in karting. So fitting that he comes on with a 914.
You must be talking about just america. That doesn't sound right otherwise.
Things I hated:
Shifting was just awful.
Suspension was horridly stiff in the '69. It was great in the turns, but for every day driving it was miserable. They did adjust the rear suspension rate on the '70 models if I remember correctly.
Things I loved:
Handling was unsurpassed.
Thanks for the interesting additions, JF
@@randypobstofficial Thanks for taking the time to show us a race car, and your skill as a driver as well !!!
@@littlejohnny47 Ya, honestly I don't recall if I ever missed a shift or not, but it didn't detract hugely from the car.
@J F About the shifting …
Reverse is simply straight up from 1st, no lockout whatsoever.
THIS is a car show. Great stuff Jay and Randy!
Love this episode 😍. As a kid in the 1970s my uncle had a 914 that I remember cruising around in. I've always liked this car based on those memories. That 914-6 is a beast!!!
My sis Judi had one, as mentioned. She was cool. Great beach car w top off.
I ALWAYS liked the aesthetics of the 914. As an early teen, the car’s lines struck me as exotic. Unfortunately, I never had an opportunity to drive one. Until…
In 1983, my then girlfriend bought an orange 1971 914-4.
Randy And J! This needs to be a Series. It can’t get any better.
That raw metallic engine noise is just pure delight to my ears, I adore these little 914s and just like the boxsters now it's criminally underrated and unjustly looked down on by a lot of 911 snobs.
That missed shift at 30min mark wasn't very delightful.
@@DarylHiers jay has missed a few over the years. happens.
I have a 911 and I love those cars.
Nice to see jay enjoying Randy pobst driving..
Two national treasures sharing a few great moments. Thank you gentlemen. 👏
That is the Most Beautiful Car i have ever seen. Amazed how timeless the design is.
Maybe I'm just stoned, but Randy gives me a old vibe of my childhood. Telling my own stories and explaining my experiences just like he did in this video was an everyday occurrence when I was picked up from school by my mother or father.
Randy's the best - and very knowledgeable and patient with Jay.
I hope Jay has more guests like this. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, comfortable in front of the camera. The car is interesting but the guest/car combo makes this an engaging watch.
One of the best JLG. car, content, conversation 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Randy is too busy being on everyone else's shows to have his own. 😂😂
Love Randy, became a fan after watching him race in the old World Challenge series driving Porsches and Audis. Such an accomplished driver, knowledgeable and very likable. This episode is such a pleasure to watch.
One of my favorite cars. Should have bought one when I had the chance, back in the 1970s.
I could watch Randy everyday. Thank Mr. Pobst.
Had '73 2.0L 4cyl with 45mm Dual Dellortos and that thing was a beast! I can't imagine that extra torque with another 2 cylinders! Sweet Video! 👍
They sure are. Just a pure driving machine.
I've always loved the 914, and I remember when they were dirt cheap, but I still couldn't afford them or the upkeep. Such a joy to see the car being driven the way it should be and appreciated.
Saw very few of these around "back in the day", but even with a non-race engine, these things were monsters, absolute monsters!
Now back to the segment! - B-LOVECARS-Gardner
I would watch the Jay and Randy show every day of the week. Two great car guys are great together. Please have Randy Pobst back for more Jay Leno Garage.
Randy's so perceptive and knowledgeable about the brand. Fun watching the two parry about the fundamentals. Great content!
Love Randy. Jay and Randy together could listen to them talking about cars all day
Randy Pobst! Instant thumbs up! He's an automotive Legend!
I grew up on Merritt Island, right up Tropical Trail from Randy! Never met him, but I'd love to!
yup, hes really good at us liking him. just a cool cat
I am not sure what I enjoyed more the car or Jay and Randy’s banter!!! What a blast thank you Jay! Loved watching Randy he was like a kid on Christmas Day! 😎
Jay, you and randy pobst is by far one of my favorite videos/vlogs that I've seen and I've been watching both of you for years love the car and love the interaction between both of you. Big Thank You to the both of you for this post/content
Seeing Jay dart in and out of lanes tells me all I need to know about this cars handling prowess. Super direct.
What an amazing song that car sings!! Really great. I've always liked 914's (today I have a 928). Had no idea about 914/6's...great episode. Randy is one of my favourite drivers...so humble and enthusiastic, it's infectious. I hope Jay has him on more often - he augments the show very well.
These two guys. Classics. Seeing Jay and Randy talking is just a treat. Randy is probably one of the best precision drivers on track and his ability to communicate and imbue knowledge is without equal in my mind. Jay? What needs to be said? Love the guy.
I really enjoyed watching this video. In fact, I love watching everything that you put on this channel. Thank You, Jay
This is a real pleasure to watch. Thx🥇.
I couldn't believe the amount of room in the cabin, even with a cage. Randy and Jay weren't shoulder to shoulder like I was expecting in such a small car.
Pobst is a real legend. Not a boring word comes out of his mouth.
Mr. Pobst look up ultimate racing driver and got to be a picture of this great man! The man appreciates machines and their abilities and loves making these great machines perform, gets the best out of them, very enjoyable interview!!! Could you imagine a long road trip with these two men, Heaven on earth!!!
Oof. What are the chances?!
Randy is awesome. He’s also the reason I bought the car in my photo. Watched the video Saturday & bought the car Monday.
I always liked taking the interstate exits without lifting and watching the cars following me suddenly backing off. Too much fun.
Probably one of the best episode. Randy is so enthusiastic and seems this 914 is something special.
Best regards,
Ben
As they say at around 40 minutes in: Randy is the stability control and Jay is the airbag. Great stuff guys.
I enjoy everything Randy does. His passion and charisma are unmatched.
I love Jay Leno and his sense of automobiles.
So happy and excited 😆 I love the passion in this man
What a great video..... I love the enthusiasm of Randy, he's a car guy, without a doubt.
When I was a kid, a neighbor of ours that lived around the corner was in partnership with another guy, in a German car repair shop, in Peoria, Il.
Great episode Jay.
Hope to see Randy on here again. A legend.
A great car and a very entertaining episode. I love Randy’s passion, it puts a smile on my face every time I listen to him.
Great video, knew a guy with a 914-6, did some SCCA racing with it. The reason for the dog leg shift pattern, with first being down and in, is because on the track, first is hardly ever used. Second through fifth are in the H pattern. Not great for drag racing, but perfect on a road course.
Beat me to it. Thanks.
probably one of the best conversations I have ever heard on this channel. not too many people who can keep up with Jay, and teach him some things about these cars. I was a kid when these cars came out, and I remember how unpopular they were here. even looking at it today, it is not an attractive car, especially from a time of so much beautiful competition. I own a Porsche now, and still think this one is unattractive. its the front, the nose. well, the rear is nothing to look at either. and the profile, OMG. you would have to drive it- no, track it, to love it. a true gem, and even bit of a missing link, in the progression of motor sports, and the auto industry. good video. great content. love it.
Loved this episode. Those guys looked like they were really having a blast in that thing😎👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Two real-deal car guys enjoying a real-deal sports car. What a treat! Thank you all who made this happen.
This is the first time I see Jay switching to the passenger seat to let the guest drive. But it’s Randy Pobst so I shouldn’t be surprised.
Shows you how much Jay respects Randy's abilities
@@farmerdave33 yeah and he still didn't put on the harness.
Watching on my living rm system, through my stereo, this little beast sounds incredible when it winds up. Never knew this version of the car existed. Very cool.
