For your North American viewers, Cheap Joe’s has an in house brand called Kilimanjaro. It is 100% cotton and made by Fabriano. I love their sketchbooks and loose paper as well. Very economical but unfortunately not for other countries. If you can ever get your hands on some, it is excellent.
I honestly think both papers are lovely as I am watching you paint💕 thank you for sharing this video. I am starting to get back into my watercolor painting, and I don’t honestly know what’s the best paper out there going to try both of them and cut them to make my cards. ✌🏼💗
Thank you so much for this video with just 2 comparisons! I have watched several videos where too many have been compared at one time and, as a beginner, it's overwhelming! With that being said, I have had both Arches & Fabriano in my newbie "stash build-up", but I'm so afraid that I'll love them both so much better than the others that I have, and I want to use them all up while learning!? Hopefully, that makes sense! Again, thank you so much for this video! ❤
JElias, please do bear in mind that the sizing of watercolour paper deteriorates with time, and climate & or how it is stored can speed up this process, so my recommendation is to use it, enjoy it, and go on using those you like best when your stock runs out. I think you'll not go back to student paper once you've used 100% cotton and given it a chance - the results are worth it, as we'll waste less paper than asking a non-cotton paper to behave as we really want it to behave in some techniques and with colour vibrancy in most cases. A "sort-of disclaimer": I'm not agin non-cotton paper in general. I've used some, and still use them for certain things, but as Crystal's video so clearly shows, in the end, it's down to what suits us, and our way of painting. So do use yours and compare what you have, and above all, enjoy using them! 😊
just found your channel and immediately subscribed 😊 I love Fabriano, and use it constantly. Here in Italy Fabriano is more affordable than Arches (that's the main reason I haven't tryed it yet 🤭), even cheaper when you buy the big sheets that then I cut myself, I am currently buying them in packages where I pay 3 and get 5!
i actually quite prefer baohong to arches , i like the texture better and dont feel afraid to use it because of the price haha. i haven't tried fabriano yet. beautiful painting i enjoyed painting along : )
I wish your demonstration had more explanatons as to why you preferred one over the other. All I know is that you like how Fabriano is more absorbent and smoother.
I’m also more in favour of the Fabriano paper as I feel I have more control over my painting, but without loosing the flow of the colours (and I paint in a very different style to you). I now use my Arches paper only for very loose abstract pieces.
I hear what you are saying about the movement of the paint in Fabriano but I prefer the way the paint dries on the Arches. The granulating pigments are beautiful there.
The sizing going off in papers in Australia does happen. My mother in law gave me some watercolour papers she had been storing for years and I suspected it might be having issues because it had yellowed a little. So I tested it by painting along one side and there were clear issues with how the paper was taking the watercolour paint along one side of the paper. I have cut the rest of it up to test colours etc.

Such a fun video to watch, I usually just get whichever is having a discount, haha, but I am totally up for trying whatever is available at the market. X
I really like both paintings and think they’re especially fresh without a second layer. I’ve only painted with Arches, and when you say it floats on the paper, I’m thinking wouldn’t that be good if you wanted the work to stay wet longer so you had time to add more paint to let colors bleed? In any case, now I’m going to try Fabriano!
I know what you mean... The floating thing gives us more time to work. But Fabriano still gives you time without that floating look! Which is why I find it so amazing!!!! Give it a try and let me know.
Great comparison Crystal. I would go with Fabriano.. Just the flow and the way the colours mingled and dried. Arches felt a little 'stiff'. In India we have some local, handmade 100% cotton paper. Its much cheaper.
I can't use Arches, because it's sized with gelatin (not vegan). I've used Fabriano and didn't mind it. I mostly use Baohong but really love Hahnemule for when I want to use 'fancy' paper!
Hello, Crystal. I love Arches, never tried Frabriano because I cannot find it in my local art store. Maybe I will get lucky next time I buy paper. Nice video.
If your art store sells full size loose sheets of professional watercolour paper, they should have Fabriano alongside Arches. Try buying one sheet and cutting it into small pieces. My paintings on fabriano almost always look amazing!
Hahaha! I know right!? I'm going to give it one more try and get a Block which I haven't tried. I only tried loose sheets (which was disappointing) and pads.
I like your Arches painting better. I've used Arches and was surprised that it seemed difficult to adjust to. Perhaps I'll try Fabriano and see if I like it better.
This makes me think of doing like a watercolor paper tournament bracket, haha. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts comparing Fabriano to Stonehenge Legion paper! So for my environment (clearly not museum conditions), Arches is the way to go. I also find watercolor blocks to last longer since they are protected on all four sides. So if you live surrounded by humidity Arches will withstand better than softer sized papers in pads or loose sheets. Softer sized papers will last longer in block form. To save money I usually diy my watercolor blocks.
