Barry, parboiling sprouts isn’t necessary, I hated them til I tried roasting them. Peel & halve them, coat them in an emulsion of olive oil and maple syrup (how much is based on how many sprouts. 2 pounds of sprouts requires 3 tablespoons of oil & 2 tablespoons of maple syrup) place just the coated sprouts (not any residual oil & syrup) on a baking sheet, sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast at 450 degree oven (the temp one usually roasts a potato at) for 30 or so minutes or until caramelized & you can insert a paring knife in easily. I start checking them at 25 minutes, sometimes it can take 40 minutes. My kids love them

I’ve never had or used an air fryer.
Got one this Christmas, unpacked and prepped it Christmas Eve.
Watched a few RUclips videos and we cooked the whole Christmas dinner using it.
It was quick and easy. There was very little washing up and that was done while the meal was being plated up.
The meal was delicious and the ALDI Turkey crown was moist and tender. Only cutlery and plates to wash afterwards.
We had one of the most relaxed Christmas days ever.

    • @markylon
      @markylon 9 месяцев назад

I think mine was more relaxed. TBF. I didn't spend a penny and visited friends and walked away stuffed having not spent a penny or moved a finger. I've done enough Christmases in my time, now I sit back and let everyone else do it.

Many people think sprouts are not tasty because years ago when most of us were kids, they weren’t very tasty. Nowadays they’ve been grown to be a lot less sour and much more tasty. So if you haven’t eaten a sprout since you were a kid, may be worth trying one this Christmas and giving them another chance. Also we know how to cook them properly, as years ago they were just boiled until they were mostly water!

    • @anndownsouth5070

I believe you are right. I have not yet recovered from the trauma of watery, overcooked sprouts from my youth. I do believe that roasting them are the way to make them good. Maybe I'll get myself an airfryer next year and try that.

@@xChimkin I did too but was lucky my parents used to steam them, so they weren’t watery or mushy. Had some at a friends house and they were so awful and water sprayed in my mouth as I bite into them I was so confused. I love our air fryer, it looks like a little oven, though it's not the kind that you were using. It saves a lot of electricity and time. Also, I always microwave potatoes and veggies that take longer to soften, for 10 to 12 mins in a bowl covered in water before air frying. For weeknights, there is no more switching on the oven in our house. 😛

A recommendation: If you want to gently warm a sauce in the air fryer, put the sauce into a small stainless steel bowl that is tightly covered with aluminium foil. It's a LOT less messy to clean up after.

That looks bloody lovely, Barry. I do think that a quarter of that turkey roll (brilliant idea, BTW), would be fine for one person, especially with all the veg, and PIB, etc. It'd be perfect for me - as I've got older, I actually find eating big meals a bit of a chore, to be honest. You need to get a Ninja Foodie Barry.
    You can
    Sauté
    Bake/roast
    Air fry
    Slow cook
    Dehydrate
    Pressure cook
    Make yogurt
    Steam
    & grill
    With it

@@mrbarrylewisI don’t use my oven any more except if I am doing pizza and make very good Stews and casseroles in it on the pressure cooker feature
You can also do good rice or risotto or pasta in it as well

The fing about spouts is... My gran used to start boiling them on the 10th of December.
And I think many Brits have the same experience...
Our family has a joke about starting to boil cabbage on a monday for a sunday roast.

Couple of suggestions there - Firstly, ditch the spray oil and just buy a cheap atomizer and fill with your own regular cooking oil. Much cheaper, better oil, less harmful chemicals ("Lite" spray oils are far worse for you than the small amount of oil you need)
Secondly - you wasted all those delicious meat juices by cleaning the pan before heating the packet gravy!
Third - don't parboil the sprouts, that actually makes them taste more bitter

I'm baffled by the lack of peeling of the potatoes.
Also while I don't eat potatoes enough to really justify it, I got a home potato rumbler and it's amazing.
