Whenever I think of a name for a microwave I think of Gordon Ramsey and Kitchen Nightmares. There are references to "Chef Mike" in a restaurants that mainly used the microwaves to reheat the food instead of actually cooking it. lol
Having worked in chain pubs that use microwaves a lot I can confirm this is an industry name for them. Chef Mike was referenced almost daily during my time there 😂
When I was a child, my mother got her first microwave... it was 1970 something. She went to a class at the department store to learn how to use it. She made a cake in her largest mixing bowl and an upside down glass. The whole family stood in front of it watching in amazement. I think it tasted like a sponge as well.
Our first microwave c1983, we baked a sponge. It was so pale we kept adding minutes. Eventually we thought it must be done now. Sliced it up. White on the outside, charcoal in the middle.
I love how Barry is marveling at the size and wattage of the microwave. The new one is pretty much exactly what we have here in the US! Someone send him microwave cookbooks, stat!
She's become a little mini-me of your wife lol. The way she said "thank you" when you said there's your breakfast was so sweet, but the dubious look she gave you when she said it was missing some sauce and meatballs was so your wife! LOL I've seen that look so many times in your gadget testing videos. Ugh - that cake brought back memories. "Mom's" specialty that she sent to every potluck dinner was a storebought Angel food cake (the kind with a hole in the middle), iced with canned cream cheese frosting, then filled the hole with canned fruit filling - cherry or blueberry. She had issues, so it was usually one of us kids who made it, which explains part of my resentment as she took all the credit. My other complaint was that it was so popular at church potluck that we rarely ever got to taste it. It was insanely sweet, but people would skip through the line to the dessert table to get it.
This was my thought. I don't see how this is doing anything more than a big plastic or glass bowl with a lid or some cling film (maybe a couple holes poked in or the lid cracked open)
The shape and the drainage lid make it worth it. And it's not overpriced, it costs as much as any other plastic bowl so I don't think it's that crazy if you microwave a lot of pasta.
I did that for years when I only had a microwave to cook with. Similar shaped plastic bowl with lid (but smaller) from dollar tree, I made pasta and rice in it all the time
Hey Barry, you’re absolutely right: The microwave and your WiFi operate on exactly the same frequency! 2.4GHz. If a tiny proportion of your microwave radiation leaks out (as it would do) then it would interfere with regular WiFi. Try using the 5GHz band on your router, if it’s available (some have two network names you can join)
You, jokingly to your daughter: "that's your breakfast there..." Your daughter, genuinely, and without missing a beat: "Thank you!" She was just grateful you provide her with food. Must be a case of good parenting.
Your story at the beginning reminded me of my MIL's $152 bottle of Italian dressing. The dressing was $2, the speeding ticket she got on the way back was $150 😂
Pro tip from a microwave quasi chef: boil the water in a kettle, fill to the respective line. Obviously salt the water generously before inserting the pasta. Put it in the microwave at full blast for the exact amount of time listed on the pasta. It will be perfectly al dente with a lot less water. Have fun, Barry. Greetz from a German in Hamburg.
There was a period of time where we practically lived off of one of those pasta cookers. We didn't have a stove for about a year and the kids were all the kind of picky eaters to eat pasta every night. Totally worth it gadget
hi barry! i don't know if you'll read this, but your theory about the microwave interfering is absolutely right. the older wifi networks share the same frequency as a standard microwave (2.4 GHz). however, this is easily fixable by setting your wifi network to run on 5 GHz. you'll get faster speeds and you can use the microwave any time :D
@@jbug64 none of the faraday meshes on those doors are perfect, but it was and is used in wireless communications for a while now with no ill effect. I own a US equivalent called the Microwave Pasta Boat, with one Cathy Mitchell on the box; instead of Chef Tony. Released around 2010, I grabbed one off of Amazon several years ago. Absolutely love it, still being used to this day!
Top tip. To get rid of lumps in mince use a potato masher. That lasagne did look pretty good but, NGL, all of the things you can make in that plastic thing can be made in a pyrex casserole dish which can be used in the M/W and the oven.
These microwave pasta cookers are great! They are one of the only kitchen gadgets that I've used enough to have to replace it! They work well and are a great safe way to cook noodles even for kids who cant use the stove yet.
Was literally about to say that. Sometimes these plastic pots are more dangerous imho as they bend and flex as you handle them, and the steam that is released from opening lids can be a lot worse than a saucepan lid which tend to have vents.
You should definitely name your microwave Tony after chef Tony from the gadget ! Loved this video, can just see the look on Mrs Barry's face with you making all this random stuff!!!!

Corn in microwave Pro Tip: Keep the husk and silk on (trust the process!). Cut the stalk end off, about 1 to 2 inches. Microwave 4 minutes. Using potholders, squeeze from the narrow end - the cob slides out the stalk end, and the silk stays in the husk!
Well done for working out wi-fi issue it was the new microwave so fast, it took us weeks and many calls to our service provider(plus a new modem) to finally work out it was our new microwave not our hardware issue, when we finally worked out that using it interfered with wi-fi the only suggestion they could give was change the channel the wi-fi signal is sent out from modem on , hope this helps

Barry and the Lewis-niks, I make LOTS of cakes, I had to learn how to make one in the microwave at my mother-in-law's because they don't have an oven. You put the glass in the middle because otherwise the middle would come out raw. My European friends complain that American desserts are much too sweet. Always cut the sugar in half, and pre packaged cake mixes need a bit of sour cream or vinegar or more egg...something to tone down the sugar content. Always TASTE the mix before you mix it with the egg, since I don't care about eating raw eggs (I've consumed at least three a week most of my 70 years) I always taste the mixed batter before I bake it to see how the balance is. I would have put the cheese on top for the last 2 minutes only, kindof like you did with the parmesan...the microwave is famous for not cooking uniformly Since the microwave doesn't boil off liquid always use less sauce...or boil down the sauce to get the extra water out. Kids tend to like sweeter stuff, I bet they enjoyed the cake (I stopped the video at the lasagna taste test). Ah no kids! You can make a lasagna in a microwave safe dish without sinking the titanic. Thanks Barry this was a hoot. Jim Oaxaca Mexico
I've used it for years. I have the original which was called the Pasta Boat. I love it. Mine came with a rack but not a storage lid. I haven't cooked pasta on the stove for a few years now, because the pasta boat is so simple. The pasta also cooks slightly faster than on the stove because the water reaches boiling faster in the microwave. I've also steamed vegetables and shrimp many times in it using the steamer rack. Works like a charm. I've never actually tried any of the recipes in the booklet other than the two for steaming vegetables or shrimp. I'll have to give some of them meals a try because that lasagna looked pretty good. Also, you can just microwave corn on the cob right on the microwave plate. No gadget needed. if it's still in the husk, microwave for 4 minutes for 1 ear, 4.5 for 2-3 ears, and 5 minute for four ears. Then cut the bottom of the cob off, hold onto the top of the husk with a pot holder, give it a couple shakes over the plate, and the corn will slide right out of the husk. If your corn is husked already, wet a paper towel and wring it out, then cover the corn on the cob entirely with the paper two and cook it as if it was in the husk
Boston just making himself at home in the box. Reminds me of how some people buy a cat tree, only for their cat to be more interested in the box it came in. Also, it's cool that the new microwave actually shows the wattage when you adjust the power, rather than just a nebulous power percentage. It's like centigrade or fahrenheit on an oven, making it a lot easier to follow cooking instructions. Also also, said microwave is probably a rent boy in disguise. Either that, or you really CAN brown your meat in a microwave.
@@TheErador It's a pretty old joke. Maybe a little too "old-fashioned", upon retrospect, but it's what sprung to mind when I saw that you could actually brown your meat in a microwave. Until this video, I genuinely believed that you couldn't brown your meat in a microwave. But I guess it's a lot easier to do with mince than with a solid wodge of raw meat.
Yeah just a somewhat insensitive turn of phrase these days. But yeah it's pretty difficult to get a maillard reaction in a microwave unless the food's in contact with something that's getting hot enough to provide direct heat. Or you have a combo microwave that has a grill element
Loving the video as always. I think that mention makes the microwave tax deductible ;) ps If it is affecting your wifi and phone I would get a replacement - could be an insulation issue
That lasagna recipe is close to the one I've made years ago using a normal plastic storage container. Instant and normal lasagna noodles don't make too much of a difference, nor does cooking them beforehand because the sauce cooks them the entire time. I also subbed frozen meatballs for the ground beef and broke them apart since fresh meat wasn't available at the time.
Jamie, you keep telling us what you're looking for, and we'll keep manifesting it 😂 The more detail the better! Meanwhile, sending warm wishes that everyone feels great again soon.
I think you could call it Brave Dave the Microwave. As it is a brave microwave for having the testing gadgets and experimentations with food in it and Dave cause well it rhymes. lol Love watching your channel.
@@Elwaves2925 I don't know the show but according to Suede the title was a small nod to the show but mostly inspired by something else. It's definitely not a song for children :D
My main issue with the pasta cooker is the marketing. The lid for draining is a good idea, but apart from that it's just microwave safe plastic container. That they are then trying to market as something more special. Like I have an ancient tupperware that I've used from time to time to boil pasta and other things for ages.
This could be so useful for people who live in a situation where they only have access to basic kitchen equipment like a microwave and tea kettle... Like people living in a hotel or dorm room. Or maybe in a work kitchenette.
I always cook corn on the cob in the microwave. You leave it in the husk and microwave it for a few minutes (4-5?). It would be smoking hot and then you grab it CAREFULLY with some towels and pull the husk and silk off. Perfectly cooked. The hardest part was getting the husk off right away because it was so freaking hot. I always burned my hand trying to snap off the end with the husk.
I cook sweetcorn in my microwave by simply wrapping each corn ear in some waxed paper like a sweetie and microwaving on High for 4 minutes - so quick and easy. There's no need to immerse them in water.
I actually bought one of these about 7 years ago to make super lazy pasta dishes as I’ve never had to worry about the water boiling over. Mine was also on sale at the time but also included the steamer tray. It is functional which it a better compliment then I can give most as seen on tv products and I still use it to this day whenever I want to cook macaroni and cheese
Hiya Barry! I'm really not totally convinced on plastic cooking in microwave. I'll cook in pyrex instead, or clay dishes. A lot of the newer coated pans when the coating comes off in your food; your eating dangerous to your health stuff. Now people are eating micro plastics. More then ever I'm asking people to stop using plastic in the microwave until newer research is completed by people not affialiated with production, sales, ectera; of plastics. Lead poisoning was no joke back in the day; neither was asbestos. People were dieing before the truth came out. Barry you are an awesome cook, and you need to really look into what I'm sharing here. I saw my younger brother go from normal kid, to high functioning autism from consuming some lead based paint when we were kids. Thanks for the video!!!
i have the original called the pasta boat and it came with a steaming tray use it mostly when its hot outside for spaghetti or anything else you want boiling water to cook in the microwave to keep the heat down inside the house
Barry, can you please do a ChatGPT challenge, by listing ingredients you have in your fridge and asking it if it has any recipe suggestions, and follow its instructions and if it suggests a good meal!
Great idea, Sophie! I haven't seen how ChatGPT handles recipes yet. It's creepily good at so many things that I'd like to see what it can do in the kitchen.
@@nessiferum6200 I listed everything I had in the fridge and asked it if it give me a recipe involving the ingredients (specifying it didn't need to use all of them) and it gave me a recipe for a lovely pasta bake including the method! Perhaps this is Chef GPT?! 😆
Had one of these in the 90s. Different brand, no Chef Tony, and it was clear plastic. But it had the handles to measure spaghetti, strainer lid, and storage lid.
Funny thing you mention an issue with your wifi - thing is - the frequency that microwaves operate at is roughly in the same as wifi routers (2.5Ghz). Back in the day when I did technical support for my ISP, I recall many calls from customers complaining about wifi issues and most of the time it was when they used their microwaves. I suggested they relocate their wifi router and most of the time that helped. With newer routers also operating in the 5Ghz range, that issue isn't as common. (except for legacy devices)

@@TheErador A fair few people I know only have a microwave, with no oven; others don't have microwaves at all and one guy I know keeps his microwave in his bedroom. The way you design your interior is your own choice, the stats lean toward a larger microwave.

Hey Barry, as you are buying stuff… 😂 I recommend rice cooker for moisture cakes. Carrot one or apple pie with cinnamon went excellent on my Xiaomi one. But had to use twice cake mode.
Microwaves can indeed interfere with other electronic signals if the electronic shielding for the microwave isn't robust. This kind of electronic interference can also happen weirdly enough with certain types of cordless landline phones and other appliances. Not sure how you could fix it beyond returning the microwave and looking for one that doesn't have that problem.
When that pasta cooker first came out here in the states it was a "as seen on TV" product. Now they sell them at Dollar General and Family Dollar. Price is between $5-$10 USD.
Our microwave is about 10yrs old now, still pretty good but it does cause the internet to go out only in certain portions of the house. I found that because the microwave was in-between my router and my bedroom, when it was on it cut off ONLY my internet connection in the house.
Microwaves and wifi both make use of 2.4Ghz which is why using the former will interfere with the former, because it basically adds a bunch of noise at those frequencies. You can avoid this by using 5Ghz wifi if it is available on the access point.

'rent boy' really?
@@TheErador Understandable.
There is only one chef whose endorsement is worthy and that is Chef excellence.
I also subbed frozen meatballs for the ground beef and broke them apart since fresh meat wasn't available at the time.
it's so nice to see Chloe again lol
She has her own video up next
Jamie, you keep telling us what you're looking for, and we'll keep manifesting it 😂 The more detail the better! Meanwhile, sending warm wishes that everyone feels great again soon.
I've had this gadget for a few years. I love it, but I have only used it for spaghetti.
Seems good to get out of trouble for that - a good size for spaghetti too
I think you could call it Brave Dave the Microwave. As it is a brave microwave for having the testing gadgets and experimentations with food in it and Dave cause well it rhymes. lol Love watching your channel.
Least you have a microwave you can not have to worry about accidentally ‘destroying’ when testing hacks and gadgets now! 😂
In the restaurant industry we call that Chef Mike.
Metal Mickey? For the microwave nickname.
Is that a sneaky Suede reference or just a coincidence?
@@YaaLFH It's a reference to an old 80's TV show of the same name. I don't know about Suede, could they have been referring to the same thing?
@@Elwaves2925 I don't know the show but according to Suede the title was a small nod to the show but mostly inspired by something else. It's definitely not a song for children :D
@@YaaLFH Yeah, out of curiousity I checked the song out. Not for children but I liked it.
I just watched you and your family. I’m hooked. Loved the video and the product and the way you presented it. ❤️
As Gordon Ramsay calls the microwave, Chef Mike.
Most chefs call the microwave chef mike
"That's your breakfast", "Me so corny" 😂😂😂 You're killin' me. Subscribed!
Chef Tony eh? Prehaps a battle with Chef Excellence is on the horizon?
"It smells like spaghetti in water"
"This tastes like spaghetti"
Her wisdom is beyond her years
Microdave for a name?
In hospitality, we call our microwaves Chef Mike 😂
You know you’re living comfortably when you splash £200 on a microwave 😂
Especially when the old one still works! 😂
Awesome Video Barry Lewis I hope you are all well
Michael-Wave
I cook sweetcorn in my microwave by simply wrapping each corn ear in some waxed paper like a sweetie and microwaving on High for 4 minutes - so quick and easy. There's no need to immerse them in water.

Its great, i have one but they are called "pasta boats" in the USA lol great little gadget
I called our Microwave Jeremy Beadle …. Due to him having a micro wave 👋🏻
That's so terrible it's actually quite funny. 😁
@@Elwaves2925 my wife just gives me that rolled eye look too 🤣
I actually bought one of these about 7 years ago to make super lazy pasta dishes as I’ve never had to worry about the water boiling over.
Thanks for the video!!!
cheers i'll have a look into that
i have the original called the pasta boat and it came with a steaming tray use it mostly when its hot outside for spaghetti or anything else you want boiling water to cook in the microwave to keep the heat down inside the house
@@SophieRose1986 Sounds great, I need to try it out!
Had one of these in the 90s. Different brand, no Chef Tony, and it was clear plastic. But it had the handles to measure spaghetti, strainer lid, and storage lid.
Gluten free foods video please love
Seconded
Had the microwave and WiFi issue too. Log into your router settings and change your WiFi channel, that should sort the problem. 🤞🏼
Long time watcher here - that has finally subscribed 😁 Thanks (to you and the rest of your amazing family) for keeping us entertained every night.
Oh, and "Ripple" is my name suggestion (it's a micro wave) 🤣
That was an as seen on TV gadget, used it at work to make spaghetti at work, was called pasta boat. It came with a tray to put veggies on
😂 I love that you bought a new microwave to make this video. That's how committed you are to your subscribers! 👍
RE the microwave name : How about 'DING! Crosby'?....
I'll get me coat.... 😂
My company sells microwaves and I can say for sure that the most common size purchased is 44 litres; I'm loving hearing you say 30 as though it is enormously large when I would be writing it up as compact. Everyone should have your enthusiasm.
I'm guessing you don't sell in the UK. Our kitchens are not vast.
@@TheErador A fair few people I know only have a microwave, with no oven; others don't have microwaves at all and one guy I know keeps his microwave in his bedroom. The way you design your interior is your own choice, the stats lean toward a larger microwave.
Well… just for a laugh, I googled Pasta ‘n More and would you believe it IS available on Amazon for $14.95 US!
I love watching your videos. You make me laugh although your tests are quite interesting and very informative. A great big hello from New Zealand 🇳🇿🌹❣️
I was in tk maxx today and there was one in there. I might go get it tomorrow.
"I didn't know it existed, and it might not still" Ayy Barry you messing with the dark arts again?
A cheeky little Barry video? oh, go on then
Our microwave is about 10yrs old now, still pretty good but it does cause the internet to go out only in certain portions of the house.
I found that because the microwave was in-between my router and my bedroom, when it was on it cut off ONLY my internet connection in the house.
Wow I remember having one of these something like 10 years ago. Come to think of it I don’t remember using it or where it went.
Cute Guinea pig . Love when mrs.B and your girls do appearances.
Your next merch logo design has to be Boston chilling in a cardboard box 😂
Chef Tony figured out how to do the same thing a casserole dish in an oven can do! Amazing!
Microwave Dave!
Also Microwave in Welsh is *Popty Ping*
That in itself is a nickname 😆
I loved the little Ashens "cheapo" audio clip lol
Microwaves and wifi both make use of 2.4Ghz which is why using the former will interfere with the former, because it basically adds a bunch of noise at those frequencies. You can avoid this by using 5Ghz wifi if it is available on the access point.
