EXCELLENT!!!! This is the way an engineer's technical video SHOULD be made. No silly self-aggrandizing (I'm so ruddy clever) waffle and no annoying 'errrrr' pauses or distractions. THANK YOU. Subscribed.
Brilliant video and very professional.. You demonstrate that if a job is worth doing, it really is worth doing right, and not cutting corners......... There are not many mechanics I would trust with my D2, but you truly are 👍. Excellent and thanks for sharing..
RIMMER bros changing clutch disco td5 outstanding JOHN PAUL camera work & narrative I only hope the macanics that do work on my disco r up to Ur standard alas no RIMMER garage local to my area well done again JOHN PAUL
Great video, I must admit when I remove these gearboxes I don't remove the Drum and shoes I just disconnect the cable from the handbrake lever and pull it down from underneath the vehicle, those 10mm crossmember can be a pain I agree
thanks for getting back to me. I wasn't sure on best way to go about taking dash out to access wheel box but I had a go and it wasn't to bad so I'm ok thanks again Drew Defender 110
Needed my clutch changing. Would have loved to have done it myself so I could do these other bits and bobs whilst everything is accessible. Unfortunately I’m just one guy who has only the road outside my house so I thought it a bit too much to do by myself.
We just did all of this. But then the clutch wont release: We took the air out of the system. Today we even tried to renew head and slave. We pumped and tried to air out from slave and up. Nothing works. Is there a trick to take the air out that we dont know? Done a bunch of gearboxes and never had this before. Could it be a faulty clutch and how do we check that? Everything seems to sit perfect. If the frictionplate should be turned wrong, would that make it not disengage?
G’Day John thank you for your fantastic Video you are a Legend 💪👍🫡 Mate I have this problem with my 2004 Disco2 Automatic td5 just yesterday two weeks he changed transmission on my 04 Discovery 2 Td5 Automatic started playing symbol traction control as gear is engaged will I’m driving then parked home wake up in morning start on D 1-2-3 they won’t engage only Reverse works and I checked transfer box if accidentally me or family member they engaged low range some how it stuck in N but nothing of that ,, then I found out the symbol transfer box light on and when I engaged it R works D-2-3 won’t move just the 1 it works as Reverse 🤷♂️🤦♂️ is that a bad thing ,,, this happens after I visit a mechanic work shop oil fluid two weeks ago. Am I in trouble gearbox gone I don’t know 🤷♂️ what to do ? Please advise me 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thank you Matt
Excellent video - what is the right moment to put the bell housing sound deadening cover back in ? - we see it come out (4:15) but not going back in again.
great video - I had my clutch replaced last year by a local garage because I did't think it was something i could tackle even though I have done loads of different cars and transit clutch changes. the garage made a right hash of it and I can't get reverse without turning off the engine, selecting reverse and starting the engine back up. I have only done 300 miles since they changed it and decided enough is enough. they keep telling me to run it and run it and it will get better hmmm not happening. I watched your video today and the way you have explained everything, gave me the confidence to tackle it and I decided to get the box back out. I have it all out and to be honest the clutch don't look like a new one and the flywheel has got a lot of play in it, not only rotational movement but side to side, is this supposed to have a lot of play in it?? I gave him the money upfront for the for the parts (3 piece clutch & spigot bush). also I was trying to look at what side the clutch plate was facing in your video but couldn't quite see it. the plate has not got any writing on it to say what side is flywheel side.when i took the pressure plate off the clutch plate had the long part of the shaft facing the pressure plate, is this correct??? thanks in advance for any comments or help you can offer so i can get it all back together and working. regards Mick keep up the great vids, I will be keeping my eye open for more.
The flatter part of the plate should be facing the flywheel. There should be no play at all in there either. You should probably tackle the garage directly about your findings if you don't think they've changed anything.
Thanks for the reply. The clutch plate was definitely in the wrong way around. They had also failed to locate the arm onto the plastic ball joint. This in turn was not giving me enough clutch. Withe the help of your video I managed to do the job myself and it is now running perfectly. Thanks for your help and producing this video. Regards Mick
Loved your video! I got a 2001 Discovery Td5 and it's making a rattling noise when the clutch is pressed during gear shift. It's becoming a bit annoying and I wanted to know the parts that needs to be replaced. My local mechanic says the problem is not a major one. I want to take actions before it's too late. Thanks for the help.
This sounds alot like the symptoms of a clutch release bearing on the way out. It could last for miles and miles or go completely tomorrow. You'd obviously not just replace the bearing, you'd do the whole kit if you were going to get that far into it. And don't forget to change the spigot bush!
rimmerbros.com/ItemList--Discovery-2-Engine-Gearbox-Mountings--m-19444 This is a list of parts on our website but for accuracy, call with your reg or vin number. Hope that helps.
Thank you for your suggestions! In a defender, I need to remove both engine and gearbox, is possible to lift together? Should I separate transfer box before and leave in place? Which approach do you suggest? Thank you
Im experiencing difficulty finding reverse. I have no slipping or any other symptoms however there is some clear oil on outside of transfer box. Is this symptomatic of a worn clutch or just fluid loss due to worn seals etc?my clutch pedal is a bit soft and can now move easily between gears while switched off without dipping clutch.Any tips would be appreciated.+++ what would be the cost of the work demonstrated typically at a garage?
Very well done, just a curios question. I recently watched an old camel trophy episode, and they had to replace the clutch on a defender, so my question is, is what they would have done in the bush? Thanks for the reply in advance.
Good question. I would call it an expanding bush or bearing removal tool. Maybe this link will help you: www.amazon.co.uk/XXR-BEARING-PULLER-EXTRACTOR-HAMMER/dp/B00KQP3GQY

The best "how to" video I've seen! Clear explanation without waffling and bullshit. Well done! Please do one on ball joins replacement. Thank you.

Many thanks for the positive feedback. Where are you located? JP has had a customer bring his TD5 from way down south for this very job :)
Billiant! No nonsense. What every RUclips 'How to' video should be like.
Hey John, you are a super competent craftsman, excellent video, so helpful.Thank you.

Excellent video and info.
Can you do the same with a Defender John? Thanks.

Woowwwwww this is full of good information,
thanks.
hi great videos I've a 05 defender and need to change wiper wheel box.. any help on that
thanks
Drew
Hi Drew, We don't have any immediate plans to produce a video on that subject I'm afraid. What would you need help with, specifically?
is it neccesary to remove the handbrake drum or is it just a weight issue?
Im experiencing difficulty finding reverse. I have no slipping or any other symptoms however there is some clear oil on outside of transfer box. Is this symptomatic of a worn clutch or just fluid loss due to worn seals etc?my clutch pedal is a bit soft and can now move easily between gears while switched off without dipping clutch.Any tips would be appreciated.+++ what would be the cost of the work demonstrated typically at a garage?
Hello, do you have any solution for the hardness of the clutch on the td 5???
thank you
Hi I don’t think you can adjust that , it’s self adjusting as the cable stretches over time.
You made that look so easy lol THANKS
Excellent video.
Isn’t the transfer box input seal icv100000 ?
Andrew Buckley yes!
Very well done, just a curios question. I recently watched an old camel trophy episode, and they had to replace the clutch on a defender, so my question is, is what they would have done in the bush?
Thanks for the reply in advance.
Juan-Pierre Oosthuizen camel trophy 200 300 TDi not td5
What was the reason for disconnecting the hand-brake?
Hi there,
The reason for disconnecting the handbrake was to gain access to the transfer box, gearbox and clutch :)
@@RimmerBrosTV OK, thanks!
Great video. Thanks.
Does the flywheel need to be replaced when replacing the clutch ?
my clutch slips when accelarating when im on a open road is this the clutch problem ? fantastic video
Sounds like it could be. Your best bet is to take it to a garage you trust and have them road test it.
Great video, but what is the tool used for removing and installing the spigot bearing called?
Good question. I would call it an expanding bush or bearing removal tool. Maybe this link will help you:
www.amazon.co.uk/XXR-BEARING-PULLER-EXTRACTOR-HAMMER/dp/B00KQP3GQY
That simple. 😂😂
Be a weeks job on floor for me this. Still great video.
Very helpful
Merci . Thank you
Good job!!!
Clean instructions without the waffle!
A trikki task to be honest only to be done by experienced mechanics not any do it yourself
In my D2 Td5 i did over 200k and never had to replace the clutch!
Mine has 258k km's and I feel it that I'll need a change in maximum 10k km's, so soon or later it's your turn :/ Sorry
Very informative, remind me NOT to buy a LR!:-)lol

The amount of parts that have to come off before you even reach the clutch😫. Land Rover Engineering 👎
