  • Mary A. Maluccio, MD, MPH, FACS, surgical oncologist, www.lcmchealth..., was the featured guest for Facebook Live Luncheon with the Experts on August 25, 2022. Dr. Dr. Maluccio is Director of the Neuroendocrine Program in Louisiana; Chief of Surgical Oncology at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, Louisiana; and Professor of Surgery, Louisiana State University Health Science Center - New Orleans.
Dr. Maluccio brings a unique perspective to the neuroendocrine tumor (NET) program in Louisiana. Following her surgical oncology training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she built a multidisciplinary neuroendocrine program at Indiana University to expand surgical options for NET patients to include single or multi-visceral organ transplantation, established Gallium 68 PET/CT imaging and brought Lu-177 peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) to patients in the Midwest. She was recruited to LSU in 2019 as the new medical director of the NET Louisiana program. Her mission was/is to merge what has historically been an aggressive surgical managerial approach to NET patients with emerging therapies and clinical trials that will define evidence-based treatment guidelines to optimize outcomes for patients.
In the area of research, Dr. Maluccio focuses on rare cancers, including NET and primary and secondary cancers of the liver. This includes basic science projects evaluating mechanism of inflammatory induced cancers, translational research projects investigating biomarkers of cancer in unique patient groups, and bloodwork markers of response to surgical and nonsurgical cancer treatment. Her specialties include surgical oncology, cancer surgery, pancreatic cancer/ pancreas surgery, stomach surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic biliary surgery, liver surgery, abdominal surgery and the Whipple procedure, minimally invasive surgery, NanoKnife, and ablation techniques.
Dr. Maluccio is currently expanding the NET program in Louisiana by collaborating with additional health systems with the goal of improving access for patients. This will include multi-site clinical trials.
CCF’s Luncheon with the Experts series features physicians and healthcare professionals, support group leaders, patients, and colleagues who are key opinion leaders in the neuroendocrine cancer community worldwide. This weekly series is presented via Facebook Live on Thursdays from 12 noon to 1 pm, Eastern Time. Join us for unique discussions on a wide variety of topics for everyone in the NET community!

I would love to ask Dr. Maluccio if she remembers Elmer Blevins? She assisted Judiann Miskulin with his operation at IU Health @ Indianapolis on 01/18/13 for adrenocortical carcinoma.
