    People sometimes say they are not interested in figs because they did not like Fig Newtons. A fresh fig is nothing like a Fig Newton. They are really sweet and delicious!

    • @NC_SUGAR
      @NC_SUGAR 2 года назад +1

      I know this is about a year later. But I agree. Fig Newtons don't even taste like they have figs in them. Just sugar and tiny seeds.

    As I’m watching this I’m slicing figs to dehydrate. I’m picking every few days to dehydrate, this is my 3ed round. So we pick as the ripen. Not going to volume, but if I change my mind to can, I’ll go by this technique. Many thanks.

    Loved it!! Our trees are having an off year or something. Every third year we have more figs than we know what to do with. This is the year after the third year. No figs at all. But, the leaves are beautiful. So, I am dehydrating all the leaves I can for tea. It REALLY makes some good tasting tea. AND it's good for you!!

    • @tracyflenner
      @tracyflenner 3 года назад +4

      I need to try this. Do you ever add anything to those leaves or drink the tea plain? What does it taste like?

    The leaves makes great tea. Tastes like green tea. The figs you have do not have the fig wasps. Only certain verities of figs in California needs the wasps. Yours in a common fig which there are 1000 of verities.

    I'm one of those that is alergic to that fig juice. Ms Wanda's trick of putting oil on your hands gets that stuff off perfectly. After I mess with figs I put oily lotion on my hands, wash them with Dawn and put on more lotion, and my hands are perfect! I can touch my eyes, the skin under my nails doesn't get sore, my hands are just fine. I can't say how much I appreciate this tip. I've been dealing with this for 75 years and more and this works!

They turned out great ! I have a baby fig tree I can’t wait to try this “ round robin” canning method with them.

    Thank you for showing others how to can. One thing I noticed you didn't tell that there is suppose to be a rack for the jars to sit upon in the caner. I remember when my mom was canning and we couldn't find the rack (just a round piece of metal with holes in it to keep jars off bottom of caner). She folded a small bath towel and put in bottom making sure it touched all the way around then filled with water. She said it was to keep the bottom of the jars from getting too hot and exploding. Thought you might let beginners know this trick. I have often used this when I was water bathing just a few pints of something (caught on sale at store) in a small stock pot.

    This is so crazy, I just watched Shawn James on "My Self Reliance". He lives in the wilderness of Canada and is building a new homestead. He had a beautiful off grid homestead he built with old fashioned tools. Due to a new obnoxious neighbor moving in he sold that property and moved to this property. Today he planted a fig tree in his green house. Today you are canning figs.
    He also has another channel, Shawn James.

      Figs only have the wasps inside of them if you live in certain areas of southern California, the Mediterranean, or the Middle East in climates that don't freeze. Frosts kill the fig wasp. All figs grown in the US outside of some parts of Southern California are self pollinated and have never had a wasp inside them.

    My dad's fig tree used to take up half the back yard, but a hurricane 🌀 took it out years ago. I just planted one in a half plastic drums this March and it's doing well. An early freeze killed half of the top, so it's branching well. Do you know how to dehydrate figs?
