Thanks for the amazing coverage of the last Mars flying boat to fly. I was fortunate to get aboard Hawaii Mars at Oshkosh when she was last there. At least both will be in museums for years for us to enjoy. Not the same as watching them fly, but better than just a memory. Such an incredible plane to see fly and drop water.
Alex hi from Calgary. Thanks for this episode a very special one. Both Mars have been fixtures of BC aviation for so long it's difficult to think of not seeing them on Sprout anymore. However reassuring knowing one will remain in BC. Once again the Coulson family showed how committed they are to their Mars by repainting #2 in original US military livery prior to sending her off to arrive eventually at Pima. Great episode thanks.
Amazing that those puny little humans get to drive that beast. It makes all other flying boats look like fighter planes. Beautiful photography, thanks.
Without any doubt Alex, you excel over any other videographer when it comes to documenting these two icons of aviation! I love the fact that this one is painted in her original (?) livery. I truly hope they can have a safe successful flight to her final destination. 5+hours I would think is a lot to expect from the old gal. Fly to your retirement home ol’ gal! You deserve it!🇨🇦💕🇺🇸
Oh Alex, thank you for that beautiful video. I had read somewhere a little while back that our Canadian Martin Mars was going to be retired and was so happy that you were able to film it. On another note, if you look at the video, I noticed right from the beginning the the top of the engine #2 cowl where the air intake was was showing orange compared to the other engines. I wondered at it throughout the video so when they landed again, was not surprised it was the same engine that I had noticed the orange glow throughout the video. Surprised no one had caught it before. Another sad ending to a great plane.🥲
Some were saying it may have also been an inlet storage plug, left in the engine or more likely it is paint from the previous livery or a borrowed part from Hawaii Mars
@@larryfreeman7979 agreed. These engines are maintenance intensive and I am sure are a part of the reason for the retirement, that being said, the oil pressure issue will be addressed and it will make trip. These crews have tonnes of experience and likely have a number of spare parts still on hand.
Beautiful footage, thanks! Its now 1500 PST Dec 15; we were all set to watch her arrive & taxi in at Alameda, but unfortunately she turned back just short of the US border, reportedly with a #4 engine problem, & landed in Patricia Bay, BC. No official word or rumors about what's next, but the wx here doesn't look very promising for the next few days.
She will be flown to Roosevelt lake in AZ as it's the closest lake large enough to land on. Disassembled and trucked to the Pima air museum, no small feat to be sure.
The Canadian Snowbirds gave Hawaii Mars an escort during her final flight. I think it would be appropriate for the Blue Angels to do the same with Philippine Mars.
Alex, thank you for sharing. When I saw her in the air, I becames teary eyed. 😢 I am looking forward to seeing her here in San Diego.😊 I wish she could make more visits before her retirement to Pima. ❤
In 1957 four of them participated in the Oklahoma City air show in conjunction with the Semi Centennial celebration of the state of Oklahoma. They spent nights and off hours on Lake Hefner which is a water supply reservoir in NW OKC. Watching them take off and land was extremely interesting and loud.
Nobody has mentioned it but, it’d you look at the footage, it appears that #2 is glowing cherry red above by the intake. None of the other engines show this red color and you can see it on several of the shots.
Because this is an amphibious plane that can only start and land on water, and its final destination, the Pima Air and Space Museum, is located in Tucson Arizona, in a desert area with no large bodies of water in the vicinity.
@@stanleovart No, these very large flying boats were never fitted with landing gears. Removable wheel units were used to move these planes when on land, and get them in and out of the water, but these wheel units can not be used as landing gear.
Amazing opportunity. Thanks for sharing!
Well that was definitely worth a like and a comment! Beautiful old bird.

What an amazing old bird. Thanks for the video.
Great video as always
❤Thank you Alex! Great video. It was a pleasure having you onboard Big Greenie today.
Spectacular work. You have defined video for the Mars. Absolutely fantastic light, shadow, water, sky and sea blue on aluminum!
Nice video.

Beautiful vintage flying boat! 🤍🤍🤍 Love to see that in person! Very, very awesome footage! 😊👍🔥
It looks like they might have left a cover in the duct of the top cooling inlet of the #2 engine... maybe that caused the loss of oil pressure ?
I see the red cover...
good catch
yup at 8:20... very visable
Also at 12:39 very visible, hopefully they didn't cook that good engine.
Maybe a red spare piece from hawaiian mars?
Unbelievable to see history like this in action we’re really lucky also crazy how that massive rudder moves
Truly magnificent! Thanks so much.
Stunning footage on this great ol bird.
Hopefully they get her sorted out and safely to AZ.
Wow, always happy to see you post.

why would you say such a downer thing. Its not and ending at all. Just a hiccup.

Thanks for being there, to get some great vid.

What camera and lens are you using here. It’s so sharp. Great coverage Alex.

I noticed the intake on #2 engine is red and not on the others ? Didn't leave a cowl plug in by mistake did they.
No, they didn't. This is just red paint on some parts on loan from Hawaiian Mars.
Impressive bird!
Flew over our house last week in Nanaimo before turning back. Leaves again tommorow at 10am.
I hope they make a full video of their flight back
Saw the Hawaii mats in Victoria great planes

Is the long taxi actually a mag check and run up on the four engines?
Too bad she wasn’t able to go to the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola. Would have been a more fitting place for her than Arizona.
Great video. I am making a painting of the Philippine Mars
Superb video Alex, it was a pleasure to have you come along and film this. I love the shot of the prop vortices around 8:20!
My dad served on a PBM-3 in ww2 as a machinists mate.
It's amazing it can get on plane to takeoff
Would have been good to see it lift off the water! 🫤
They just announced on Facebook that it would be leaving on December 15 around 10:00 am
Dayummmmm
11:31 flying history
Why they need to dissassemble that to move, as he can fly to Any of the destinations ?
Because this is an amphibious plane that can only start and land on water, and its final destination, the Pima Air and Space Museum, is located in Tucson Arizona, in a desert area with no large bodies of water in the vicinity.
@ it doesn’t have any wheels like other hydroplanes ?
@@stanleovart No, these very large flying boats were never fitted with landing gears. Removable wheel units were used to move these planes when on land, and get them in and out of the water, but these wheel units can not be used as landing gear.
@@Framo60 now it is obvious, yes. THanks!
I thought it is a flying boat. Amphibian aircraft have retractable wheels, hence the term amphibian.
PHILIPPINES MENTIONED!!
(lupang hinirang starts blasting in the background)
If only you knew their naming conventions.
It would be nice if she gets a welcome from the Blue Angels once she enters US Airspace.
See dinosaurs do fly
Hi
You missed the actual takeoff.
Ten minutes and then no shootage from the actual take off. BS.
