Excellent question. Personally I think the anime relies heavily on pre-existing knowledge of Scott Pilgrim lore, but I also have a friend who's said they're really enjoying it despite not being too into Scott Pilgrim before. I would personally recommend trying out the comics first because I love comics, but that's just me. If you already have a Netflix subscription, the first episode of the anime is almost exactly the first book (up until a late-stage plot twist) so you can always try a bit of it to see what you think, but bear in mind that after the first episode the anime does something very different for the rest of its runtime.
My girlfriend liked it a lot, we only watched it together because (like many others) I thought it was a full recreation of the original story (I only watched the movie and played the game). Not what I wanted, but still REALLY good
The Twist in Scott Pilgrim takes off is necessary, even mandatory in the year 2023. There are A LOT of people who took away the wrong moral of the story of Scott Pilgrim (from the books and *especially* from the movie). The story of SP Takes Off is exactly what a good chunk of the audience *needed* to see.
I loved the twist with the anime. As much as it would've been cool to see a faithful adaptation, getting to see a whole new story in this universe and different sides to all of these characters was amazing.
The new anime feels spot-on exactly how the original would have felt as a faithfully adapted anime and both continues and commentates on the original story. The best part is all of the characters get to breathe and we get to see new sides of them. The exes all being fleshed out and becoming part of the larger group of friends and frienemies is great. Ramona being given so much agency to tackle her own issues is the best feature. And even Scott evolves more than he did in the original story.
Ik im late to the party but i think you missed the point of Scott pilgrim takes off’s ending. With everything happening, the evil exes given closure instead of just being beaten and the new understanding that both Scott and Romana have actually brought them together more than in the past. One thing that really stands out to me is the quote “you need to let me live my life! If I do you’ll end up where I ended up, Alone, alone in a room, For 10 years! that was your choice! Let me make my own! I’m you!” Which is the conversation between the Scott’s where you really see the differece between old Scott (comic Scott) and new Scott who has seen what happens and is willing to change. You also see when Romana comes back, she said she waited 10 years without so much as a Text and ridicules old Scott for spending time training instead of fighting for them. You see Scott in the background nodding his head as you come to realize Scott is more mature than old Scott because of what he has seen. You also see Romana chooses herself over both the Scott’s which shows she ready and willing to come to terms with her past unlike in the comics.
Also to add on bc yt doesn’t like me, in the comics Romona disappears and comes back to say “I came back for me, not you” which we don’t see in the anime where she says “I choose me” instead of her running away and realizing it isn’t what she is, she accepts herself and her flaws and is willing to work on them and stop running. I feel this builds a better relationship between both of them where they might last more than old Scott, after all it’s explicitly stated that Romona only told old Scott she needed time and space, where he then runs away for 10 years, unlike with this Scott where he seems to understand something old Scott can’t understand
13:29 that is what i love about the Ubisoft video game because if you do the Scott ending they take this idea and crank it up to 11 where Ramona disappears but Scott juggles Knives, Kim, and Envie all at once ☠️ where as if you do the Ramona ending its literally what we see in the film ☠️
Great video, great takes. I feel very much the same; it’s great to see someone else really get the nuance of the series and how so many of the changes were for the better. So much of gaming media seems to just be “woman-let story bad” that it’s honestly super frustrating; I can’t help but wonder how similar they may be to the older Scott. There’s one bit I’d like to point out that I worry you missed, though. You mentioned feeling that Wallace deserves better than Todd, and I absolutely agree, but I think part of the tragedy of those scenes is in how that’s the case. Yeah it’s played for laughs and Todd also deserved better than what Wallace gave him, but notice how Wallace never really seemed to express anything for Todd when he wasn’t in his Scott Pilgrim costume. I think part of the tragedy of Wallace as a character is a one-sided crush on Scott, and his tendency to self-destruct when heartbroken (see: being drunk and sleeping with a ton of dudes immediately after they “break up” in the comics, being all distant at the funeral in the anime)
Man, I remember that summer of 2010. Like you, I first became aware of Scott Pilgrim via the film trailer (although I think I'd heard of it because it was what Wright was waiting to finish before starting on Ant-Man in earnest), bought a box set of the first three and blew through them in an afternoon. Funny enough though, that was my first summer out of high school, but yeah I was feeling the Scott Pilgrim vibe as a person.
Before I start, Matthew I like your artwork.Scott piligrim vs. world I love the movie. I was able to watch the Anime and love it. It's the game is what I didn't like, for years I wanted to play the game for the PS3 but at the time I didn't own a PS3, I was happy that it released on the switch but the game didn't feel fair. Maybe in a few years I'll try it again. But I'm looking into reading the comics when I get the time
The last couple levels are hard if you haven't done enough level grinding, and especially the last boss fight in particular which is a PAIN if you haven't leveled up your stats.
Grinding for stats helps a lot. Want to know another trick that makes it easier? You can replay old levels or even parts of levels. Meaning you can replay the second half of level 3, fighting Todd repeatedly, and getting an extra life each time you do. It also helps if you manage to keep the sword throughout the last level's subspace sequence. That thing just tears up that boss.
For me, the anime was like ordering a burger like the last two times you went to this place, but getting a chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich tastes just as good as the burger did the last two times you ordered it, but you kinda wanted a burger.
@@TomVCunningham Talking about exes seems to be taboo. Everyone has dignity and should not be judged by their past. What if this show promotes cancel culture and offenders do not have an opportunity to redeem themselves. I want to speak to the creators of Scot Pilgrim.
@@TomVCunningham I may disagree with you. I founded out from other sources that Scott Pilgrim has flaw characteristics, especially Ramona and other good characters. To be completely honest, I stopped at around episode 2. I found the whole 'Scott must fight the other exes to win the girl's heart' weird. The voice acting as said in the video was off for some characters and I guess I am not as interested in stories like these than I thought I'd be. Really nice video and I hope more like these will come since they're interesting to listen to and think about.
Its funny because ramona and scott being broken pieces of trash is kinda the whole point of the story so no, no they didnt if anything they made scott an incel in show
loved the comic and movie but could not finish even the second episode. they did my (very flawed) boy dirty. (also his and many other VAs were really bad too. ramonas VA is actually good though)
If they want to focus on Ramona, fine. But why not be honest about that in the advertising? By promising a faithful adaption, they're just trying to insidiously draw people in. "Suberting expectations" doesn't automatically make something good...
It doesn't fix anything. The Game and Movie was Great already. They just did a Bait and Switch as they always do and Butchered what People liked for Browny Points. Not Supporting this. Only Recommend others if they want to watch it to Pirate it.

watched the whole video, it was fire, good job bro
It didn't looks like the comics/game but missed the actual magic
I like the voice acting personally, I think it’s fun to see animated versions of real people voicing their own characters
The episode titles are all styled after video games like PAC-Man and Street Fighter II so there was at least that.
