@@Dougfunny37 Nope not really. I was going to be a smart Alec and say a "whole 20 wow". It really depends where your at and what time of year. 173rd Airborne Brigade was in that very same area of Khunar and Nuristan provinces. Red Wings took place in The Pech Valley in Khunar not very far from Waygal and Korengal Valleys. During there 07/08 deployment they were there for 15 months and got shot at almost daily some times for hours at a time. I was in Southeastern Afghanistan in De Chopan District of Zabul Province during that same time frame. We also got shot at quite a bit though maybe not as much as guys in Wygal and Khunar we were probably number three as far as most activity. There were far less firefights than say during the Vietnam Conflict because the Taliban and Al Qaeda understood they were not going to win going toe to toe with US Infantry and Special Operations Forces so they generally use IEDs but I have been in complex coordinated ambushes where they used both together pretty well. I was.

    • @joshualittle877
      @joshualittle877 2 года назад +5

@@bosephusray165 Which helicopter are you talking about. If you talking about Extortion 17 when 18 members of SEAL Team Six were killed that wasn't anyone beating the SEALs they beat the helicopter pilots who were transporting the SEALS. If on the other hand your talking about Operation Red Wings and Marcus Lutrell and his 4 man Special Reconissanse Team that's why Reconissanse is among the most dangerous of military missions. You can only do it with a very small group of people usually 3-7 men. My LRS Team had 7 guys and only 3 actually did the Surveillance and Reconissanse. The others managed Communications. The nature of the mission also requires sacricing fire power for Communications and Surveillance gear. That 4 man SEAL Element only had rifles and two were Semiautomatic Sniper Systems so yeh when they were flanked from the high ground by a superior number with RPK and PKM Machine guns and Mortars they were pretty much outgunned and outmatched just because they are SEALs doesn't make them magic. None the less and despite all the guys that were killed on that mission the mission itself was still a success. The goal of the SEALs mission was only to locate Shah so a larger force of Marines could come in and kill him. The ultimate goal of the mission however was to prevent Shah and his militia from interfering in the 2005 parliamentary elections. As a result of Red Wings Shah and his militia fled to Pakistan and were killed by the Pakistanis and thus could not interfere in the election. What's funny is that another attack a little ways down the road in Waygal Valley in the Village of Wanat Taliban attacked a FOB that had just begun construction. This was a Platoon of about 15 Paratroopers from my unit Chosin Company 2nd Battallion of the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. They were attacked in Wanat by a force of somewhere between 200-500 Taliban and they had of the 15 killed but they still won in the end and did not lose a single inch of ground. The difference between these two scenarios was not SEALs vs Army Paratroopers it is simply the fact that while the Paratroopers had not yet received food, water or any of the fortification materials to construct their FOB they unlike the SEALs were well armed and had lots of heavy weapons including light machineguns, 50 Cal, Mk 19 Grenade Launchers and Mortars. Americans almost always win because of possessing superior fire power and being skillful at how to apply it. US Tropps although we ultimately lost the war rarely ever were defeated in battle and the few times they were it waa due far more to our mistakes or lack of preparedness in that situation than it ever did the Talibans prowess in battle.

People's perspective as to what exactly happened varies. What is fixed is the topography and physical evidence. I've constructed a draft Google Earth file which shows movement/positions from a combination of Luttrell's book, intel from Red Wings II and even some anecdotal evidence.
Even though I dislike the grandiose language used in Luttrell's book, from my experience (Recon-jungle/woodland/mountainous) I am satisfied with Luttrell's account of the topography, movement, and I can identify the initial OP and OP1 (Murphy's OP on the NE ridge line).
Recent anecdotal evidence from Gulab that Shah's men had seen Murphy's team with the goad herders from near the summit is highly plausible and checks out from both the topography and timeline, since the CH-47 insertion was so close that Shah may have been alerted during the night and headed up Sawtalo Sar at first light looking for a fight. This explains how Shah's men knew to sweep down extended line and split on both the N and NE spur lines.
What I found later, when reading Luttrell's book and the Google Earth file side-by-side made me ill as the graphics show something unbelievable.
Luttrell states verbally and in his book that Axelson must have died from his wounds and from the final RPG hit. He never saw him after the blast but does state that the Taliban were around his body. Although, Red Wings II found Axelson's body further down the valley - did the Taliban relocate the body? No!
Luttrell found a cornice to hide under and at dusk claims to have shot 3 Taliban across the ravine. Note that every soldier knows the sound of friendly weapons and enemy weapons, so Luttrell's shots, even though suppressed, would have been obvious to anyone in the area especially a friendly.
At night, once Luttrell was climbing toward the NW he states he slips and makes substantial noise. Two hours later he says he was being tracked by Taliban some 200 yards behind him, that they were making noise (talking and breaking twigs). In these valleys at night noise travels long distances, especially upward (Luttrell "you could hear a goat fart").
My Google file shows that Axelson was probably still alive, that the Taliban left him to bleed-out during the night knowing his wounds were too severe for an escape.
It was not Taliban pursuers which Luttrell could hear 200 yards behind him, it was Axelson moving towards Luttrell's shots 2hours earlier!!! It was Axelson who was crawling over branches, breaking twigs and possibly calling out.
The moment I realised this isn't possible, it's probable, I felt sick.
I wish I could link the file here so you could see how close they were.
I think deep down Luttrell realised this himself once Axelson's body was found and even though Luttrell raves-on about Murphy throughout the entire book - more than any other figure by far - he decided to name his son Axe because of this knowledge.
Luttrell didn't leave Axelson for dead, he left him by accident.
I don't believe Gulab found 11 full magazines on Luttrell, I think he's simply had a falling-out and said this to attack his character.
As for Taliban numbers, my personal opinion is that the minimum number of Taliban which could achieve these events - given their greatly superior plunging and interlocking fire positions - is no less than 15...probably 20. I do not believe Luttrell's claim of 80-200 Taliban but do believe that with RPG and a single MG fire it most certainly would have felt and sounded like 80+.
Operation Red Wings was simply hit by a 'Hasty Ambush' after revealing their position at OP1 on the NE spur line and the decision to relocate back to the first OP ultimately led to their downfall.

Read something about locals in the area hearing helicopter noises in the region during the night of the SEALs' insertion and that already made Shah's militias aware of the presence of American troops. If it's true then that means the mission has already been compromised even before it started.

That's what the Afghan side of the story says. That EXACTLY. They heard the bird, they went out on patrol and found the rope, and they were following the SEALs from the very beginning. Plz talk about Marcus Latrell and how his whole book and movie was Bullshit. The man who took him in and saved his life came to America for the movie premiere, what many don’t know is how he wanted to tell his side of the story, the truth. Well Marcus couldn’t have that. After that it all went down hill.
It was not 80 against 4, it was 14
I believe Mike Murphy went to make the call leaving 3 alone, then Danny was hit leaving 2, then Mike was hit.
Marcus already said he laid his Rifle down, I believe he left Axe.
I believe he ran, leaving Axe to fight for himself and that why it took 2 days for them to find his body so far from Danny and Mike and were Marcus said he would be.
Marcus said he was shot 10 times, broke his back but then was cleared to go back out on missions????
    No way, complete BS!
Marcus is another Chris Kyle unfortunately with his Jessie Ventura story.
    Sad, but true

legate lanious the same could be said about any armed forces anywhere... having air superiority is almost always a key factor in battles.

Nothing, the british came and were humiliated when the afghans killed 16000 of their army in one battle in 1837. No air support at that time.

My best friend in high school USMC Cpl. Phillip George was KIA doing mop up for this operation. I will never forget his sacrifice.

I was in his platoon when he died... We were on a patrol on the way back to the humvees and we were ambushed. He said in 3rd squad and they were pinned down and could not move. Once the fire fight died down I remembered seeing his body lying down. Myself and a few other Marines had to put his body in the back of a local's truck because our vehicles could not get to us. That was the last time I saw George.

Then you do some reading and many sources Inc military actually there raise massive flags about the whole story that was promoted. RIP lads who died. Major questions about why the op was done like it was and how much truth line survivor told. Respect to all the true fighters and heroes

Operation red wing was originally a marine sniper operation, but socom wouldn't allow them to use there helicopters. Wonder if the outcome would of been different.
