At the reunion show, the way Jon is moving around (nearly walking off stage as one example) makes it seem like he's not entirely present, but REALLY trying to be, at least it seemed like that to me.

Very interesting video! I always thought that Rabbit's glitches were tics but a stutter makes more sense!

Also, another thing for the robots and trauma: the spine canonically is genuinely incapable of forgetting things, and the events of photographic memories are Stuck in his brain forever-and Rabbit of course experienced the events of turn back the clock without knowing what Happened,,, this video is awesome, I love this band and I love this thing a lot!!!

i know you said you left your stutters in because of the topic of the video and that makes complete sense ! but they also make me very happy to hear bc it feels like im sitting w a friend and listening to them talk about a special interest (which is one of my fav things to do)
idk it makes you sound more human (pun only halfway intended) and makes it so my brain doesnt zone out halfway through a sentence bc its like "oh no this is a Real Person and ill be sad if i miss their words" and i love it a lot
also thaNK YOU for making a video about this, i didnt even know spg haD a comic bc i havent done basically any digging on them so now i get a new thing to devour in 2-3 sittings and then continue to be autistic about for years to come !!

thank you!! as an avid watcher of video essays myself, while editing this i realized a lot of folks have really tight edits, one sentence after the other with perfect takes. nothing Wrong with that, really, but it made me think "what if i kept the audio pretty close to what it was originally, with all the breath breaks and my weird speaking cadence and stutters?"

The video for SPG song, "Malfunction" it actually mentions people that have cards that say what their Malfunction is. Love that song, Honeybee, Transform, and their cover for "I don't care, I love it"

Holy shit, Rabbit's stutter!! I actually had to pause her introduction video around the part where she was talking about her Micromachines, because it sounded So Very Much like I used to when I was in speech therapy and I was trying to push through a stubborn phrase. I had honestly forgotten about that. Great video, as always

You talking about the Jon potentially having madd made me think of the "Mayor of Biscuit Town" bit where Rabbit notices that Jon smells like gravy and when asked why, he is surprised that Rabbit doesn't know and says that it's because he's "the mayor of Biscuit Town". Rabbit then points out that this doesn't make sense and the Jon isn't really sure how to respond at first.

Their song "Malfunction" almost always makes me want to cry, how it celebrates diversity in people who don't fit certain standards.
And for maladaptive daydreaming, I did not know of that term until recent years. It was...unsettling, when I finally realized how much of my life was spent in that state. Been doing what I can to gain control of it, and go to immersive instead, but it's been a struggle.

i just discovered this band recently and i think you did an excellent job with this video! i really enjoy how rabbit's stutters arent just accepted but actually treated like a kind of charming appeal unique to her character. it's one thing to tolerate disability and another thing to embrace it! i still dont know much about them aside from their costumes and routines completely rule but the neglect they all seem to share hits kinda close to home for me and im interested to find out more. subbed and binging all the rest of your spg stuff!

I don’t have a stutter but I do have tics, which when severe enough will cause me to be unable to speak, meaning it’ll cut off words and I’ll have to start them again over and over, so it kind of acts like a stutter. The most INFURIATING thing is when someone cuts me off or tries to guess what I’m saying because they’re usually wrong and just because I have a disability should NOT mean that you get to speak for me. It’s not that big of a deal if you have to wait 5 seconds for me to say a word, just listen because you continuously interrupting me while my tics are doing that already will make the whole process much longer. It makes me so happy to see that none of Rabbit’s siblings ever do anything like that, they don’t even act annoyed by it they just wait for her to finish the word

Fire, Fire is about PTSD and you can't change my mind. The first verse is a nightmare, and the second verse is a flashback. In the first verse, there's a weird perspective shift in the middle right before the subject dies, but even though he dies, he wakes up in the next verse, sweating in his own bed. The fire alarm that wakes him up sends him into a flashback, and it's unclear what's actually happening and what's in his head.
They have so many songs about mental illness. As a someone who is actually four to six mental illnesses in a trench coat, this band very much appeals to me.

I always assumed the Stage Zero in the video for Lyin Awake was Zero, immobilized in the basement in like, low power mode or maybe he was put there cause they thought he was broken and he turned on just enough to be conscious and started daydreaming about his solo career he was about to have.

we absolutely loved this video! our partner likes SPG so we've heard a bit of their music, but we had no clue there was so much backstory to the characters, and the disability rep is absolutely fantastic. we especially appreciate how much seems left open to interpretation; it's really nice to see disabled characters existing without having to "justify" certain behaviors by explicitly stating where they come from. and the representation is appreciably built into their on-stage characterization rather than existing solely in the lore, in fact the lore doesn't even give the full story in most cases... the disabilities are part of the characters, not just part of the characters' backstories!

i'm glad this video came into my recommended. as a disabled queer person i've felt a lot of comfort from SPG's songs, specifically wired wrong and malfunction. being autistic and having a dissociative disorder, i never came to terms with the label "disabled'" until my dad helped me file for disability last month.
i know being disabled doesn't make you less of a person but i've had to confront my internalized ableism. it's silly to say but a goofy little band of robots has really helped me in this process. i'm happy SPG also has helped other disabled folks feel represented and appreciated. in the wise words of rabbit "varied strings are worth more than gold"

If I may ask, is your mechanical organ an insulin pump? When you mentioned that "I'm a cyborg with a mechanical organ," it immediately made me think of mine. That's how I've described it more than once, and I think it a large part of my own personal interest in cybernetics and roboticism. And then looked closer to your avatar and saw the thing on your belt and wondered. This video is the first thing I've ever seen you've done.

As a child I had a terrible stutter and a pronounced lisp. I also had a terrible balance problem. I have suffered from horrific migraines since I was a teen. When suffering a migraine, stressed or tired my vocal afflictions will return. My wife is so patient when it happens. Most people dont even notice it. My current gp doctor has acknowledged the issue. That has made so much difference. Im 55 now. So for over 30 years no doctor would even acknowledge my issue. SPG is an amazing group to show that we as a community of fans can find representation and acceptance. God bless them and this community. My speech is so much less than many go through. But i remember going to speech class as a kid and i can see how this would be hard for kids to go through. Thank you to the op for this video. I enjoyed the review of the band and your interpretation of the various traumas they have gone through. It is important thst people know they are not alone and that there is help out there. Doctors are so much better now. I encourage anyone who needs help to please seek help. Your story is yours. And there is help out there. Your grief is yours. The world is made better for all of being here. This band is amazing as is this community of fans. Stay safe everyone.

Re: Six's Mask. The first thing I associate keyholes with is someone looking through one. So what if Six's mask serves to reduce sensory input to a level that's comfortable for him? Maybe the blue energy vastly increased his sensitivity or gave him the ability to perceive things outside the usual five senses. Or since he's confirmed neurodivergent, maybe he started wearing a mask while his face was healing, and realized it helped a lot to manage his sensory integration problems, and decided to continue wearing one.

im so glad to see someone talk about dissociation :) and also MADD !!!! i do that!!!! because of trauma. im glad to see it be talked about. i dont choose it at all :sob:
i never talk about my madd because nobody around me thinks its real and openly constantly mocks it and my pacing.... this video hearing about it talked about so clearly and friendly. it makes me feel overwhelmed in a good way

I don't know if it's the same for other people (might be from my ADHD) but I don't notice people's stutters as much after using zoom for work during covid. Audio buffering makes it such a common place thing that it just seems perfectly normal to have a little random break in the conversation from time to time.

I haven't really listened to any of SPG but I do like obscure lore, and the song Honeybee!

As an aspiring writer, who has ADHD (and probably is autistic, but I'm still awaiting diagnosis on that), when it comes to writing disability, "crippled" and "cripple" are words I'm very careful with, but I feel like they shouldn't be completely tabu. In the book I am working on, one character does use these words when referring to her adoptive brother, who is an below-the-knee amputee. She doesn't mean it in malice, but it is meant to be a sign of her callousness and the way in which she can be ignorant about how the world has changed since she was young.
I generally don't *like* using slurs, but when writing a character, who was born way before these words became slurs, and who is meant to be struggling to adapt to modern sensibilities, it feels like messing with the integrity of the character when I mess with their vocabulary. It's one of those things that are a fine line to tread, in my opinion, and an instance in which a character can either be shown to be flawed, and/or learn over the course of the story that they have to change with the times or will be left behind in obscurity.
Equally, if the writing of Doctor Norman's backstory fits the style and feel of the rest of the comic, I feel like censoring those words could take away from the authenticity. Mind you, I have not read the comic, and I don't know whether the descriptions are meant to be written by a character inside of the story (which is where I'd find those words more excusable for the afformentioned reasons) or by a third-person narrator who isn't part of the story.

I don't know too much about Steam Powered Giraffes, but this video is super cool! I used to maladaptive dream in middle/high school, nowadays not too much, but it's cool to see someone talk about it. Like to the point of pacing so much I would bruise myself. ALSO, is your sona a quail owl? It's so cute!
