Plus, I’d love to see an extended prequel segment that shows how richter ends up back at the castle and falls under shaft’s control. Plus, I would like to see both characters be playable mid-game, maybe fighting their way back out of the castle in a style more closely related to Rondo of Blood, with both Richter and Maria having their own unique weapon, armor, and item powerups just like Alucard has. That part always bugged me because even though the game was a sequel to Rondo, it felt more like a spin-off title that was only loosely related to Rondo, as Maria and richter are only on screen for a couple minutes and then simply discarded and forgotten in the story.
Great video!! Absolutely loved the Sega Saturn & Cut content sections. Looking at all the ports for this game is so interesting to look at in retrospect and you two did a great job presenting it. Also agreed, the Dracula X Chronicles version is the best imo but the Sega Saturn version is definitely worth checking out for the SUPER hardcore fans like myself lol. Awesome stuff all around really enjoyed the video! This is definitely something more SotN fans need to see
I'll say this for the Live Arcade edition, it is by far the most affordable. Think I got it on a sale for 5 bucks or so. The fact is the PSX version is overpriced relative to supply, just like with Pokemon games or anything from Nintendo.
A correction is sadly in place here. The xbla version of sotn final install size is 650 Mb +. Also the audio is NOT compressed. Standard the game boots with MONO audio. Change the audio to stereo from within the game options menu, under system. To be clear , the options of the game itself, not the xbla menu of the game. Also, the game CAN be run without borders. Depending on your TV. Put your console into 1080p or 720 p. resolution( 4k will not work). set your TV to 4:3 ratio, and adjust the screen size in the game no more borders.
Didn't even consider the 4:3 tv option, I've done that for a lot of GoG games that stretch on my laptop. You don't really need it for this though, the game stretches out just fine, and the borders beat black bars imo. I use the full moon to measure the geometry, not sure how accurate this is to the standards in other versions (Such as how Super Metroid in 8:7 or whatever mode gives you a round morph ball but it otherwise inaccurate) but it works for me.
Castlevania Requiem was actually developed by Sony internally, with an in-house PSP emulator. Its also the reason why the collection has yet to be released on anything but PS4.
This is actually one more version of the game that is available on iOS and Android. It has touch controls, and it has shortcuts on the touchscreen for special moves. It uses the newer voice acting from the psp version, has controller support and allows you to select Richter or Maria from the start
The Xbox part was curated by the evergreen @thereviewden, check his channel out when you can, it's awesome! And thank you so much for your nice comment!
I didn't even know about SOTN back in the day until I read about it in a gaming magazine like Playstation Magazine or something, it was on a list of "the best playstation games" or something, and near the top was Symphony of the Night, the magazine also told you about the secret upside down castle, which was something that got me hooked and wanted to play it.. but it also kind of spoiled the big surprise of the game so I knew about it from the very start. It was still a pretty big mind blower though when I actually got to experience it for myself, had never seen what was basically an entirely different game world to explore that was twice as hard. Also wtf, why is the black label SOTN ps1 game so expensive on Ebay? I used to own a copy but wish I knew it would be worth so much, I would've kept it. Maybe I have it somewhere in my junk drawers, but yeah kind of insane
Thanks for comparing all the version. There are hack for the original PSX which include some improvement over the japanese version. Unfortunately still no Maria.
Thank you for your comment!! And yes, I love Maria from the Saturn, I wish it was THAT version to find its way into the more recent versions, since her play style is completely different
Sega Saturn is missing a select button by default, but I guess you can also map two buttons pressed together at the same time would work to access the map. As for the XBLA ver. to get the nose demon and ferry, you need to buy the game on the JP Server which can easily done now with X1, series S|X by just changing the console region. Sadley, the game will a port of the JP version, so no english besides the opening cinematic which still Refer Trevor as Ralph. I'm glad I got chronicles x digitally so I can also play it on the PSVita since it can play digital psp games.
This was a great video! Good job both of you guys 😎 I play this game almost annually. And I thought this year I should look into which version was the best. I’ve played it on almost every American console release. I knew about the Saturn but until recently emulating it was out of my reach. I think I’ll do a run of the original Saturn and remixed version.
After playing the game for over a decade and playing all the versions with major changes: My favorites is a toss up between the psp, ps1 and Sega saturn.
This is a pretty good video. I first experienced Symphony of the Night on the Xbox Live Arcade version and I still have it to this day. I didn't like the border, but I was able to turn it off thankfully. I also have the version that comes with Rondo of Blood on PS4. I still don't know why Rondo of Blood hasn't gotten a wider release on other platforms besides PSP and PS4; but it's still a solid game, easily in my top 3 in the series overall. Then I decided I wanted to have a bit of authenticity in playing the original SOTN on PlayStation. Whether it was the physical version or emulated, I'm glad to have fully experienced it and hold it as one of my favorite games, period. It's why I'm more fond of the open ended Metroidvania genre through this and other intellectual properties like Bloodstained, Shantae, and Ori. Once again, good video and glad to see you ran into my video about the Castlevania remakes! Cheers to you! :)
I agree with you, the important is to be able to play these masterpieces, including Rondo, which I hope will come to different shores than just PlayStation eventually! Cheers!
I really don’t like it when they changed the dialog in the mobile app version. I played the ps1 version so much I knew it all by heart and totally throws it off when it’s changed.
I have the PSP Dracula X Chronicles on my Retroid Pocket 3+ which enables me to run it in higher resolution which removes the jagged PSP graphics and I can connect the Retroid Pocket to the TV. With any controller I want. So that is my ultimate version. Although still keep coming back to the Xbox version where I first tried it and reached the inverted castle but the PS4 version is best for the authentic Sony feel. 😊
You're right, I should have mentioned it, but it is basically a butchered port of the PS1 version, with audio and framerate issues that would give the Saturn version a run for its money! So no big loss there really. Thanks for passing by!!
It's essentially the same version as the PS4 and PSP ports, with no real noticable downgrades in both audio and performance (I've beaten the game twice on that version), on top of having all the benfits of the ports, like playable Richter and Maria from the start. I think it's definitely worth mentioning, especially at that price and because it's literally SotN on your phone, for wherever and whenever you want, that's a crime. Oh and it also has a continue feature that carries over from the last room you entered before dying, on top of easy to use screen controls and quick access to spells. Wing Smashing and Soul Stealing has never been this easy : )
I got Requiem almost 2 years ago , the really thing that disappointed in SOTN me was not finding the original voices 😢 PS Actually there is a GBA collection for the Switch (aria of sorrow, circle of the moon and harmony of d.)
Play all versions !!! But I recomend the Saturn version 👍 it has more content. The PSP version was ported to Android , good if you have an Nvida shield tv, or android tv
I love this game. The gamecom version leaked not long after your video. It's better than the LCD game you showed at the end but that's not saying much.
@@piotrtomaszewski2518 hey, then it is a more recent version, the one I'm referring to was a straight port of the PS1 original, this one is apparently from the PSP, but didn't try it out. Cheers

Eh, I wouldn't call Castlevania Requiem a lasy cashgrab. Remake of the Rondo on PSP is total travesty. It's visuals are extra ugly, it's music consist of butchered remakes, hitboxes thanks to 3D all imprecise... Throwing it in would be unnecessary work that almost no one would appreciate. After all it was always said that only reason to play that thing is only worth out of curiosity and to unlock the actual game together with SotN. Requiem just got rid of unnecessary step, that was required before, to play two of best Castlevania games.
I remember buying this when it came out and thinking it was great, never understood why people called it Bad... But it has always happened to me, the draken-nier... The demons souls... The cycle always repeats.
@@LucianTheWorldGamer, they're in a gray area. For a console to be truly retro it has to be from three gen ago, two at the minimum. It has been an awesome ride buddy, thanks for being part of it! The video wouldn't have been the same without you

They need to make a complete version with updated graphics and the ability to play as all the characters plus allowing them to all get items etc
