I actually sold my 2020 SDR for a cheaper MT-10, and unless you've ridden the 1290r, you have no idea how hard it is to launch. That much torque on an upright bike takes ALOT of skill to launch properly, compared to the MT-10, which is just a breeze to get going.
Indeed, no point using 1st on the KTM - it's quicker off the line in 2nd which takes enough off the edge off the torque to get a good launch. The MT-10 is such a brilliant all-rounder. Lacks a bit of ground clearance on the track and the tank needs to be bigger - but a fabulous, fabulous road bike.

These guys know what they're doing so they are just balancing wheelie vs speed. Its hard to get a great launch but really easy to get a good one on a bike like that.
Awesome skill as always Chris. It would be good to see a video on tank-slappers. How to reduce the likelihood of having one, without having to ride like a snail (Dampners, fork geometry, etc.), and how to control one. I had one years ago, when a bird hit my front brake lever, mid corner at speed. From memory I think I wound it on to cure it, certainly not an option in your situation. I assume you stronlgy applied rear brake and waited for it settle, before jumping on the fronts?
I had a very similar moment to that on an early blade in around 2001. Mine wasn't from a wheelie though - I was coming out of a corner (in Mexico obviously) toward the top of 4th and just on the exit there was a small crest with a few ripples on it. On other bikes it was usually a little wobble of the bars and on with your day. On that evil thing it immediately went lock to lock so violently my hands came off the bars and it looked very similar to that clip. Luckily it was a fairly big, open road and I managed to stay on long enough for it to come back. Scary stuff though. The comment about the brakes is spot on too because that was something else I never expected so when I went for them and not a lot happened until the lever weas really near the bar I pulled over to check the slapper hadn't popped a line or something. Thats one of those endearing moments that stays with you. It also made me love the bike because up until then I liked it but it was a bit too good at everything. Once I realised it was doing a Kato and just waiting for the correct moment to kill me it felt like much more of a challenge. I've had a few blades over the years since and always had a slapper now and then (edit - not like that one - just a couple of lock to lock and mostly head wobbles now and then) but now I know its coming its not too scary - it just adds a flavour of danger. Bikes like that are almost always more rewarding.
I had a tankslapper from tying down the forks on a Hayabusa for a top-speed run, of course no brakes for the first couple of squeezes and then rapidly running out of runway coming down from 190ish mph - no ABS in those days so I couldn't just hammer the brakes on.
