"Wagakki Band" literally means "Traditional Japanese Instrument Band". The flute-like instrument is a Shakuhachi. They also used a koto, shamisen, and the taiko drums.

I'm a Japanese American and really love them for mixing tradition & traditional instruments with hard rock. I like how you brought up classically trained people in music departments that also love metal haha. That's right up my alley. Big classical & orchestral music lover. Nothing makes me happier than having that fused with some hard rock or metal. It just sounds amazing.

Wagakki band is made of 8 musicians who each are master of their instrument. They are:
    - Suzuhana Yuko: singer and shigin (traditional japanese poetry), piano, fan and sometimes sword dance
    - Machiya: lead guitar
    - Asa: Bass guitar
    - Wasabi: western style drum kit
    - Ninagawa Beni: tsugaru shamisen (the 3 strings instrument)
    - Ibukuro Kiyoshi: koto (the long horizontal harp like instrument)
    - Kaminaga Daisuke: shakuhachi (traditional flute)
    - Kurona: wadaiko (japanese drums)
I strongly recommend reacting to their live performances, for two reasons. First one: they are far better on stage than on studio, and they are already great on studio. Second one: their old label usually have reactions to their music video taken down; this doesn't happen with live performances.
On title I recommend there is:
Sun wheel: a hard hitting rock song ruclips.net/video/n0KNaSyE-H0/видео.html
Queen of the night: something very soothing and traditional ruclips.net/video/qsewsLfZ6qg/видео.html
Hakushu kassai: a title that give every members a chance to shine ruclips.net/video/5sJnveBvoLw/видео.html
Senbonzakura: the cover of the vocaloid song that made them famous ruclips.net/video/Xjwe9WyO8Qs/видео.html
Yoshiwara lament: another vocaloid cover, initially written by the bassist ruclips.net/video/7w47mCYXMTk/видео.html
Synchronicity: a very jazzy song og body swapping ruclips.net/video/8SNV8s8FJBk/видео.html
Hana ni nare: a very poppy song ruclips.net/video/gtA3F2ZKleE/видео.html
Slightly different there is also the collaboration they had with Amy Lee for a cover of Bring me to life: ruclips.net/video/hk1GtYK7BJM/видео.html

An incredible band. When I first heard them, I too was just blown away. The concept behind the band was to make traditional Japanese instruments more relevant to a younger and wider audience. It was the idea of Yuko Suzuhana, the vocalist (also an excellent pianist and Kenbu dancer, fans and katana). I believe Machiya, the guitarist is responsible for the final arrangements.
Most of the 8 members also have solo projects and/or other bands they play with.
What more can I say, they are all incredibly talented in their respective fields, they have a very varied range of work and over the last couple of years have become one of my favourite bands.

When Beni, comes in, with the Shamisen, my heart just melts!
The fusion of traditional and modern, just works, so well!😍🥰😍🥰
Babymetal were my find of 2020, during Lockdown, Wagakki Band were winners of 2021 and the Maximum The Hormone, were this years winners, in my head.
Japanese artists have kicked me in the balls and said Wake Up!
Rock music has been dying on it's arse, for years!
When bands like these come along, it makes me feel re-invigorated!
Just a random list of bands, I've recently become aware of, who I highly rate:
    Ningen Isu
    Nemophila
    Gacharic Spin
    Lovebites
    Jinjer
    Polyphia
    Sabaton

@@septasoareousrex It was Babymetal that kickstarted my love of music, again.
      Something unique!
I now have 27 of their concerts, all 3 Funko Pops, multiple Tshirts and a flag.
My interest in rock/metal was waning.
Then came along, 3 Japenese teenage girls, and their outstanding band and changed my life, forever.
I listen to Babymetal, everyday and my life is enriched. I've never fanboyed like this, in my near 6 decades, on this planet.😍🥰😍
AND THEN I discover the Wagakki Band! and so many others!

This live video is from the early days of Wagakki Band and consists of two songs, the first half instrumental "Homura" and the second half "Akatsuki noito". "Homura" means fire, and can also represent the hidden passion of the inner heart. I think that "Akatsuki noito" is the closest translation to "A ray of light before dawn."
When asking them for an encore, it has become a standard for the whole audience to sing this song together.
In addition, except for their live videos, music videos owned by Avex will definitely be blocked, so please avoid them.

    • @latestpoter
      @latestpoter 10 месяцев назад

Actually, we fans use "Akatsuki no ito" for an encore as a traditional. It's start from Wagakki Band Taiwan's concert on 2015.
We fans plan to play a suprise for Wagakki Band. So, we use singing "Akatsuki no ito" to replace "Encore" for request a encore. And this part also become a traditional in Wagakki Band's concert.

    long post--->
    My current favorite band!
8 well crafted musicians with love for tradition and modern. They want to preserve the culture and make it accessible to the younger generation and also introduce Japanese culture worldwide. What else can be said ? You can see it their music. Other than that, its their long CVs. The members like different kind of music, but together they make the best, imao. Some people still can't comprehend the traditional singing (shigin) for example, but all agree this band makes surprisingly good combo.
Their music ranges widely: cutesy pop and fan hyping (World domination, Hakushi kassai, Hoshizukiyo), anime/drama OST (Ikusa, Starlight, Aria of life), Olympic themes (Kishikaisei), jazzy (Synchronisity), epic ballads (Atena no nai tegami, Izana, Sabaku no komoriuta), folk (Fuurin no utautai, Okinotayuu, Sasameyuki), metal (Sunwheel, Tsukini sakebuyoru, Shiromadara), prog? (Hotarubi, Bou getsu), vocaloid covers (Tengaku, Nijiro chouchou, Phony, Episode.0,), acoustic (Doppo, Tsuioku), rock (Kagerou, Reload dead, Guren, Howling), 2 whole orchestra concerts, instrumentals.
Yuko Suzuhana (vo) is the front lady and heart of the band. These people had their own thing and were successful, but she chose them to make her dream come true. Actually, she and 2 other members of Wagakkiband created Hanafugetsu (still active) - more acoustic ballady-folk formation. Yuko had the wish to expand with louder style and added more instruments. That's how Wagakki band came to life. Yuko is classically trained pianist and grew up with traditional form of arts like shigin (she won national shigin contest 2011) and kenshibu (fan and sword dance).
Machiya (g,vo) became the musical expert in the band. 7 out of the band members have wrote songs, but he is leading. Eventually he took over the arrangements. Other comments expand more on the traditional instruments.
"Homura" is instrumental from the guitarist' solo album, before the forming of Wagakkiband. They sneak in some of his work sometimes. (ex.Togakubi). "Akatsuki no ito" is like their first original hit song. It became an encore chant. Their debut is a vocaloid covers album (''Senbonzakura'' being the most popular to this day).
As for my favoites...i have some i hum during the day, i have some that tear my heart out.
I like Iroha uta, Sora no kiwami, Watashi shijoushugi, Hagane, Nijiro chouchou ruclips.net/video/LusXUdXJ9Z8/видео.html, Tsuioku ruclips.net/video/yxg-W0TQSeA/видео.html, Atena no nai tegami ruclips.net/video/rFTFMocCSZk/видео.html, Eclipse ruclips.net/video/qtWJlBWd4WU/видео.html, Hotarubi ruclips.net/video/BfiCPP_KcC0/видео.html, Episode.0 ruclips.net/video/xET6Ahuy-KI/видео.html

Tono monogatari kyuu yon + Yami ni kirameku

Gobousei and a diff. Homura (they played the original ver without shamisen solo, and has a version with shamisen and diff. bass solo)

Tono monogatari go go + Chie no kajitsu + Somosan seppa

Kyoka suigetsu + Tsukini sakebu yoru
    ruclips.net/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/видео.html
If you like music videos, the ones on their official channel are safe to use. They changed label.
Remember CC W channel if you need lyrics.
Yes, i intentionally didn't mention the Amy Lee collaboration and ''Senbonzakura'' as suggestions. Those two with this particular live you did are ''the usual suspects'' when it comes to reaction channels. I just hope people got to see more than this.
Now, for the guitar playing and white guitar with sakura petals...
Machiya, also knows as Shin Oumura in his other work, is a music geek. Apart from his other band participations, being vocalist for his band m:a.ture, playing for video games, writing for others ect, he is working with the small company Sago New Material guitars. They produce bunch of models and he is using them all since the debut of the band.

Sorry, it's not in English, but i'm sure a musicians will figure things out. There might be changes, but his latest equipment review is on Japanese magazine only. He has paid subscription, where he gives musical lessons sometimes, but during covid live streams he spent a lot of time with fans. I'm sure he can casually answer professional questions if needed. He is nice.
Well, i hope you continue enjoying them. Have a great new year!

They don't have a single bad track - seriously! - but I'd suggest either their "Manners" with a dirty funk bias, and "Blackhole" fast metal bias double feature, or their latest "Influencer" which has some sweet solos in it and for the M/V a fantastic location
