"Distortion & flanging", is that describing the growl that sounds as if something is out of balance & about to break? It seems to me like some sort of resonance between the engines? If so, what else do you know about this phenomenon plse?
Flanging is a sound modation effect which was invented by running a tape deck in a studio with one's finger lightly rubbing on the flange of the tape reel, causing the left and right channels to go in and out of phase with each other. So with multiple engines buzzing at almost, but not exactly, the same rpms, you may get a phasing or flanging effect.

The tail flash was Red, but there was another C-5 from Travis and Im not sure which C-5 it was making the noise. I was just glad to hear that sound after not hearing it for a long time!
Definitely brings back memories of riding on the old 747-100/200 models with the same buzzsaw sound and engine, except with the hush kit ( PW JT9-D)
Yes what you heard was one of the last of two c5 models powered by the tf39 engines. It was aircraft 0461 from westover arb Massachusetts which is going be to retired in august of 2017 to the Air Force museum. The white tail is from Travis afb which is a C5m model. Hope this helps
The C5 looks like the kinda plane that could never get off the ground. But then...it gets off the ground. So cool.
When I was active duty, I flew in many of these....If you fly at the top its comfy, If your an airman down below in cargo its a another world!!
Perhaps the greatest engine sound ever
Scary to think something that big MOVES... nevermind tops almost 700mph 😳
THM SGR With high enough altitude and wind at its back, it tops close to 615
Awesome machines. Rode in them a handful of times and slept most of the way. That looks like Germany.
Looks like a big version of the 707 turbo fans Pratts!
Spent my whole USAF career, after tech school at Travis AFB...Working C5's and 141's...An amazing plane....My equipment went from the top of the T tail to the flightdeck and back again...Few sounds are louder than a full run up of the engines on the ground and nothing seems bigger than one in a hangar...
I got an inside tour of one back in the sixties. I think it was Richenbacker Air Force Base.
@@u2mister17 They were pristine then...They were in B mod when I served...
Really miss those days, days at Dover AFB.
this is the best aircraft i have ever seen in my life and it is my favorite
pierce...
Than and not "then", learn to use the correct word.
Incredible ! These engines were developed specifically for the C-5 and were the very FIRST high-power, high-bypass jet engines developed. For anybody whose interested here's a photo of the TF39 being tested on a B-52 back before the C-5 went into production.

That sound awesome
Runway 23 out of Spangdahlem. Too bad it ends right before the Runway from Bitburg comes into view. Would have loved to see that.
Many fun memories of RS, HR, SP & especially BT, W. Germany. "Bitte ein Bit!"
Sound like a harbor freight air compressor
Air is getting compressed
Standing TRT with four old-school GE TF-39s.
If you do not like the sound of TF-39s, you are not American.
it's not only about being an American, I am from Germany not far from RAMSTEIN and I am in love with this big fat ugly noisy aircraft. Sadly in the last year's they became very rare over our village
Marco H. now there are C17 and C130.
That distinctive buzz is unfortunately gone from the newly re-engined C-5Ms. Long live the buzz! One of the most awesome and distinctive sounds in aviation, and when you hear it, you know there's a Galaxy near you.
johnsoncm65 just like the awesome sound of the A10, sadly they're no more deployed in Spangdahlem, always a pleasure hearing and looking them here in the TRA LAUTER training area
Nor are you a man if you dislike this sound.
Der Flügel ist so schwer das er durchhängt, gigantisch!
Stationed at Travis for two years, seems like I always heard the TF-39’s (C-5) or TF-33’s (C-141) idle in the background. Kinda miss those days…..
Love the sound of those old engines
Those engines kind of sound like my moms old vacuum she used to have years ago
Went and saw this beast at OSH2018. Trust me, it is SO much bigger in person than it is on camera.
it has the tone of the great horns that will sound on the return of the lord! both, beautifully powerful!!
way to go GE you'll never hear a massive engine spool up as quick as that wow
Not only the C-5 has the best landing gear extension/retraction, it also has the best engine roar during takeoff
What a beautiful wing and sound
I had the pleasure of watching an entire wing of c-5 take off back in the 90’s.
The earth shakes!!!
I worked on these babies for four years at Dover AFB and Rhein Main AB.
That sound will forever stay in my mind. Ex army so I've been on one at launch.
WOW! Best freaking engine sound ever heard!
A sound of freedom!
