Welcome to another Chronicles of Solid Video. In this video I go through the must have Stage 1 modifications on my Honda CRF300L dual sport. Not everything went to plan and I go through my learning curve but that is all part of the adventure. Overall I am quite happy how this little motorbike is developing into an off road machine.

Cheers Solid! Thanks for sharing the mods.Every little guiding helps!
Love the yellow hand guards! Looks great! :)
Looks good. I would say you don't need anything else unless you want a different steering bar. Here in Mexico, this model is not imported, therefore the only choice I have is between China-made bikes ( 1800 USD ) or the beautiful KLX 300. The Kawa cost me 8 times the price of the Chinese one, but is 800 times better.
looking good keep up the good work i just picked mine up and will be adding hand guards and bash plate as soon as i figure out which ones lol
Oooh farkles🙂 it’s always a challenge being a early adopter of a new model. Love the yellow hand guards not to mention a bit of safety aspect to those too. Keep the updates coming.
Cheers Jason
Hey Solid, great to see a new video
I was thinking blue would have looked good but what the hell, it's your bike man.
👍🏽
Oooh farkles🙂 Always a challenge being an early adopter of a new model. Think the yellow looks great, not to mention bit of a safety aspect there too. Keep the updates coming.
Thanks Jason, I got hit once and I don't intend for it to happen again if I can help it.
Love the yellow guards. Looks excellent!!
Another informative video - well done.
I'm so stoked you got one. It ought to save me a huge head ache having you do the trial and error! Thanks man and yeah normal is so lame. I hate yellow but I love different. Stay weird ya weirdo
Cheers Shawn 👍
always awesome solid, thanks dude :-)
Cheers Garth 👍
Finally an Aussie talking bike stuff. The seppos do my head in with theit ego and hype. Great vid mate. Hope to track down my own 300l soon .Ive been told next shipment to OZ is in sept so might have to wait a bit. Keep up the good work. 👍
Also Peak Motorcycles channel in the UK has great CRF300 focussed content and he has had his bike a bit longer and reviews the various mods in great detail. Like COS the content is very well put together.
I have always been able to fit Acerbis hand guards on several of my bikes with fat bars and 7/8th bars. One thing you could try would be to add a spacer in between where the guard mounts into your handlebar. I usually put one on the throttle side to give more clearance. It would allow you to clamp closer to the narrow part of your bars...
Suzuki yellow on a Honda are you MAD??? Go RED young man! lol :)
Mistakes are all part of the process... Love the yellow hand guards and your reasons! 😎
Thanks Mark 👍
First I've heard of Scaggs. Just contacted them and said I'm waiting to purchase. Thanks for mentioning them.
Will be good to see the final build, will be interesting to see what suspension mods are done.
I am also waiting for suspension upgrade.
Skags is here in my hometown. Awesome that his product is popular all the way over where you are!
So obsessed with these at the moment, I've been planning to buy a second hand africa as soon as covid buggers off but this is making me consider if I need it
I got my own CRF300L after 35 yrs off bikes. I too was thinking of the bigger bike but glad I didn’t.
My main consideration was weight. I wanted a bike that I can muscle around when stuck in tight spaces. I also dont ride super long distances but can if I want to. Then the price is perfect for getting back to the trails.
This bike is great!🇨🇦🍺
Awesome 👍🏻
Great video brother. Definitely a tail tidy.
Thanks for the tips. I was about to order that exact handguard.. i’m holding off to find the easiest fit option.Yellow, red, and blue.. all three primary colors is a visual wreck 😂 At least there’s good visibility when on the road 😜👍🏻
how has the black powder coated bashplate held up on your other bikes? chipped and scratches? also why acerbis and not barkbusters?
Those yellow handguards are growing on me, mate. I have a good old DR here in Joburg, South Africa. You're making me think I should sell the old pig and get the little Honda. Ride safe!
Maybe you shoud just put red handgaurds on🤣🤣
If i ever see you in Gnangara pine or Pinjar ill be sure to spot you with them yellow handle bar guards, I will refer to you as mr weirdo. I have 250L and installed the Australian made Bark Busters that mount to the top triple clamp of the forks. I find it has less cable impedances even with bar risers.
Changing bars can be a frustrating job. Bike looking great Solid!
First off great choice on the yellow for all 3 reasons ! On my 300 Rally I went with a Pro Taper bar, Rox 2" risers and Zeta guards with the articulating handlebar clamps. Perfect fit and the difference when standing up is exactly what's needed.
Cheers. Can I ask which style of Pro Taper bar you went with? Thanks.
@@elliott212 I chose the EVO with the CR high bend
Just bought my second CRF 300 L (11/3/2021)out the door for $5578.19 /with ABS. Bought from Southern Honda in Chattanooga TN. No transportation or dealer prep charges ever. They seem to have inventory where my local dealers did not. I had to wait 2 days for the Rally and two weeks for the 300L, did not want ABS but it was all they had to offer. I do have to pay Florida taxes when I tag it.
Thanks
I like the yellow. I remember the Honda paint schemes in the 80's which, IMO, was the best. The blue seat, the yellow side panel, and the patriotic honda colored wing logo. 👌
Suspension? Exhaust? Intake?
Also I'll remove the rack completely and go rackless, there are enough alternatives for this type of setup. (keep it light) Some lights?
I called Honda Powersports Chattanooga TN 9/28/2001 looking for the 2021 CRF300L Rally. Was told two to three months wait. They called next day and delivered it to me 9/30/2021. I saved $1700 over another dealer in GA. No dealer fees, no delivery fees. MSRP and $30 administrative fee only. I called 10 other dealers and no one had one of these in stock and did not know when they would get one. My salesman was Gus and very pleased with this purchase/service by dealer.
Nice bit of luck there mate! congrats 👍
What size mx boot and brand, in other words do the boots make gear shifts a pain or are u upgrading the shift lever or maybe u don’t wear mx boots?
Great video, I think the mods you've installed does improve the bike, especially the bash plate and the rear master cylinder guard. P.S. I love those "different than normal" headlight and indicators!
They are the normal headlight for Australia and Malaysia 😎 EU and North America got screwed :P
@@chroniclesofsolid hah, true. Our version (I'm from Europe) is quite nice looking too, but I have to admit, this version of headlight and indicators is cool! Maybe one can buy the parts and do a conversion. 🤔
I haven't found any reasons why they issued it this way here and that way there, hmmm.
I love the yellow hand guards
Literally laughed out loud at pbbbbt. Cheers.
😁
Great yellow 👌
Agreed 😎
Quality video
Good video thank you, I do like the yellow looks great. Don't like the rear rack I looking at the AXP racing rear tack for the 300L but still attaches in the wrong place, but don't know where else you could attach one.
I like the yellow hand guards. Real attention getters…especially by cars! Anything that gets you more visible in traffic is a plus.
Exactly 👍
I like the yellow handguards. They really do stand out on the road and make the bike more visible
Exactly!
Let me know what you think of the stage 1 mods on the Honda CRF300L and what should be next on my list for stage 2? Ordinarily I would have radiator guards on the Stage 1 list but I have not found the right ones yet...
Could you provide links to the items you're adding to the 300L? I know you're in Australia and the links might be different for me- I'm in the states.
If anyone gives you grief over the yellow knuckle dusters, just say they're a visibility/safety feature, increases your road presence. So your Mum don't worry about you riding so much :)
Emperor racing makes a rad guard
@@seangleavy4207 The chapter times in the description list every accessory 👍
My real reasons for mismatching colours: Puke green was cheaper.
No tail tidy kit?
Man, no !
@@markcollins5026 how come?
@@walomeister5632 man, makes the bike look like it got bob tailed, just my 2 cent's !
@@markcollins5026 to each their own opinion man, I think it takes the attention off the plates on puts more of a spot light onto the beauty of the bike!
Have you considered ECU tuning? Curious how an ECU re flash helps with the stock pipe
Solid, great video of humility and honesty as usual. The Handguards colour is a personal thing - to me I couldn't think of anything worse than yellow or green on a Honda, but hey, it's your bike!
The B&B tail rack... Can I just say you need to have a bit more of a think about it before you condemn it. I'm not so sure what's so hard for you about having to install with those spacers, but hey, you'll work it out. But think about it. the need for those spacers is very simple - if the end of the rack included those spacers as part of the rack frame (making the mounting point narrower) you wouldn't be able to install the rack at all. They way the plastics are, the indent means that you couldn't fit it as the plastic would be wider than the space between the two rack mounting points. It's quite simple when you think about it. B&B don't do stuff like that without reason!
Thanks Duane, yer you are right it would be very hard to engineer the rack not to use a spacer. I guess what I failed to highlight was that I prefer the system where you drill out the plastics and mount to the frame so it does not use the seat. Just my being pithy, otherwise a great top rack 👍
I have a B&B for my WR but took it off and replaced with a Scragg type rack, even though I wasn't keen to drill large holes my plastics. But you're right, having to remove the rack bolts to remove seat would be a massive PIA. Thank God that's not a requirement for the WR!
One more thing, I think the tight cable issue is due to to lots of little things combining to make them tight. But having risers and high bend, wide bars certainly wouldn't help. I'm wondering though if a small adjustment, say 2-3°/2-4mm downwards to the hand protection, wouldn't make all the difference without reducing the effectiveness of the protectors....
Just wrapped up the mods for my 300 today for this month 12 Labs tail light full Yoshi system DNA air filter 550 performance ECU and adv double take mirrors..... it's so freaking loud now with the pipe and the spark arrestor I put in I'm almost scared to ride her she has zero miles on her so far the throttle is so Snappy now it's perfect I think
Another good video. Who are the dorks who gave it a thumbs down?
The rack is the same fit as the factory one which is the same as the 250L, I think it would be hard to fit if the spacers were part of it, the holes they use are the biggest size bolts on the subframe which has a 3kg max weight limit, nothing under the seat to get at anyway except if you were doing a full service including valves or wanted to get to wires at the back.
+1 for the bright barkbusters! had fluro green on my TE450 just to be seen a bit easier out in the bush, also how tall are you mate? might find raising the bars puts you in a bad body position on the motorcycle, wanna keep that attack position!
I like the yellow and red combo.... fits with my logo! :D haha
Be ace to see how you like the bike after 6 months/year :-)
Spacer or remove seat and/or force the rack over the plastics to find it's home?
Is there a right and left hand guard mount? Bar end spacer,my Tusk set came with spacers. The upside down mounts would bug the hell out of me.
Yellow looks awesome maybe with some gold fat bars!
Cut up an old Tube for the hand guards the ultra duty tube work well stops vibrating loose and when you crash they tend to give way not break
Love the videos man… I recently just bought myself a crf300L 🤙 wondering if you could do a general maintenance video on the bike?
Thanks Davyn and congrats!
Yellow hand guards look the goods. Buy some Plasti Dip paint and do the fork guards in yellow.
Pool salt on the drive. Bike look great stay safe .
Solid, check out the Zeta Pro Armor hand guards. They have an option mount that uses the two pinch bolts for the top triple tree so that you don't need to mount the guards to the handlebars
Have you ever broken a rear master cylinder or been on a ride where someone has broken one?
I did! The first ride on a new bike!! But I admit that I had very cheap AliExpress simple guards!
Was there a reason you didn't get the full length skid plate that covers the linkage ?
LOL, like watching my Rally Mods... back in the day.. I did the TST and rear fender 1st. Looks like that may be next..
Did u use a big shim with a small shim? Worked great on my bars.
Thanks for your vids! Have you since found a top rack that you're happy with? Thanks.
Stuck with the rack in the video, I got used to it :P
First, great video. Lots of good info. Second question, what tank bag? You never mentioned it.
Giant Loop Diablo Pro. I have a whole video on it way back in the catalog 👍
Hey mate,
When you installed the new bars, did electric start tighten back up on the new bars flush?
Or did you have to drill a hole into the bars like there is on the stock ones?
Yup, drilled holes 👍
You should add yellow graphics when they are available
What did you have to do with the new bars not having the dimples for the controls as the oem bars have?
Drilled new ones
Good mods stage 1. Did you steel the DRZ hand guards before selling it. Are u getting radiator guards? Cheers
Will be getting rad guards, still waiting for manufacturers to come out with product. SRC has some but I am not convinced on them.
Hi, when installing the new bars, did you grind out the locating nubs on the controls or did you drill the bars? Thanks.
Drilled the bars 👍 had to drill one of the holes twice due to my incompetence 😜
@@chroniclesofsolid Thanks for the answer!
Cudos to you for not doing what everyone else is doing
"Life is too short to be boring and do what everyone else does. I like to do things a little bit differently." Solid life advice
👍
I love the yellow and didn't think I would. Makes me think I might go rouge with a different color on my bike.
What do you think about the welded subchassis
Hey Solid, have you thought of changing the front sprocket to a 13T. I was riding my buddy's 300L recently and I thought that the 250L I used to have, which had a 13T on it, had more lively throttle response than the new 300.
Answer in the next Q&A 👍
Still a great bike bud get mine this week 👍
Congrats
How does the drz400 compares to this Honda?
Thanks Solid. Can I ask how tall you are? I’ve ordered the Rally and am trying to work out what handlebars to go for. I’m 183 cm. Cheers.
I am 180cm, no shoes on. I am also not fond of super tall bars/bar risers though.
Any suspension upgrades on the horizon?
Wooly gloves and Allen keys don’t go together. Ha ha. That bike next year my retirement present. Yessssssss enjoy the vids
I have yellow hand-guards too, because I like to be seen! Pay no attention to the all-black crowd, they're all accidents waiting to happen...
Hey Solid, great mods and I did the yellow. Is your tank bag Giantloop?? Looking forward to the next update
Yes Mike, its the Giantloop Diablo Pro. Pricey but well built.
@@chroniclesofsolid I thought that look familiar.
Is there a tusk rack made yet for the crf 300 l
is that the front brake cable that comes up super high ? looks dangerous
Have those exact hard guards on my WR250r, same colour too. Can’t u just replace the bar risers with new clamps and keep the kx hi bar or is the bottom clamp fixed to the triple clamp. I also have fat bars and was able to get the hand guard to clamp properly on the bars, so hopefully by lowering the heights of the bars it should be ok.
Bottom is fixed 😥
@@chroniclesofsolid thought it looked like it, but of a shame, sure u will work around it.
Pls mention the payload capacity of crf300l, tnx.
Charcoal canister and all that emissions crap, did you remove that?
Btw cos, idea to stop having to realign the spacers. Take the spacer to Jaycar and pick some heat shrink that matches the size. Then cut a length, slip it over and heat it to hold the spacers to the rack. No more struggling to line up the spacers 👍
Hello! I am watching you for long time ago. We ride same kind of roads. Please tell me what kind of suspension upgrade are you looking to fit into your bike. I never go on single-track. I am interested to pay as less as possible. Maybe a Hyperpro rear spring(100S) and a progressive spring on the front would be enough.
I am looking at YSS
Looking good, 12V goodies next on the list?
Indeed, Got one lying around but I may just go a USB port to keep it low key.
Also with regards to the bash plate, does it have the plate underneath that slides in to the bike frame and the u screw the to bolts into it, if so it the worst design ever, once bash plate gets banged up and a bit bent which is inevitable it’s a nightmare to put back on, the rear of the bash plate should just hook up underneath and then fasten with the two bolts at the front like the Gytr one does for the Wr250r.
No as shown in the video. The bash plate bolts into threads that exist on the frame. Honda put bolt holes for a bash plate in the design 🙂
@@chroniclesofsolid good job, that should have been done on the 250L. Keep up the great content, enjoy ur real world perspective on all matters.
Have you found an aftermarket gas tank to increase capacity for the 300L?
This will answer that :) ruclips.net/video/ZcQkiBysAKc/видео.html
How about luggage options?
Nice one. Are you doing any performance mods? Shocks/Springs?
Waiting on a good amount of options on the aftermarket but definitely a pipe and shocks/springs are high on the list. Not really looking for big power, I just want a slip on to increase low end torque a bit if I can.
@@chroniclesofsolid 0
I just subscribed because of your yellow handguards... Do they make a yellow bash guard? Or a top rack?
Welcome aboard and not that I am aware of
Excellent work! I'm seriously considering replacing my WR450F with the CRF300 Rally. I love the power of the WR but taking it anywhere on bitumen for any length of time is just not fun! (and it will look better next to my Africa Twin) :-). Before you ditch the thick bars, I could probably machine up some custom spacers to fit the guard brackets properly. Where in Perth are you?
Thanks for the offer mate but I want to ditch my risers so going with SE bars. Yer, the 450F is a bit brutal if you are doing long haul rides.
One thing that worries me on your bash plate is the bolt heads protruding, I have always changed mine to be flush or near as possible. I got tired of trying to remove bent and broken bolts to do maintenance
Time will tell
I've yet to pull the trigger on new bars, risers, and guards on my 300L. Actually looking at the foot pegs right now and liking the Zeta pieces. The mud here in Texas can get really slimy and I've had some issues already with the amount of rain we are having this season. What kind of pegs do you like?
I am a simpleton and just stick with stock pegz. It has never bothered me but that might be because ignorance is bliss
I have used and like the PivotPegz for giving solid feeling on the pegs all the time. www.revzilla.com/parts/2021-honda-crf300l-abs?facets%5B%5D=2051&is_blemished=false
I have never seen a 300L with that headlight, at least not in the US. Is that a 450L headlight?
