Thanks for capturing and sharing. Not enough content out there on replacing Cub spars, so this will be a treasure for a few folks going through the process. I feel kind of bad saying this, but I ordered PA-12 wings to replace mine on my J5A.
@@DavidBuyakCessna172GPiperJ5a LOL! I waffled between cheap and lazy. Somehow lazy, plus a desire for aluminum spars and larger fuel tanks, won the debate.
Those spars look TOO nice to cover up but I know you will do an awesome job on the fabric as well. Did you test fit the fuselage attachment fittings before you glued the doubler plates onto the wing spar? We did do this and we had to mill a couple thousandths off the spar so we could glue the doubler plates on and have them fit inside the fittings. My spars are made of Douglas fit because I never found any decent pieces of spruce. Where were you able to get some spruce?
I was waiting to hear from you! I did test fit the fittings/doublers/spars. I ended up doing a very mild reduction in spar thickness within the drawing tolerance & I also ran the doublers through a sander removing about .010 alternating sides of the plywood. Final fit-up came out on the money with fitting spread. (At your suggestion). I got the blanks from Aircraft Spruce but I had to wait about 4 months. The blanks were worth the wait although I didn’t feel that way at the time. Just so you know, the LH wing just needs a couple odds & ends completed and then installation of my new leading edges. Not sure how you did it but I’m thinking on locating the flanges on top nice & square to the spar, then wrapping towards the bottom with ratcheting tie downs. Thanks for keeps tabs on me.
ruclips.net/video/qfU2QtNiEMg/видео.html Consider how Chad installed his leading edges? He found a nifty way. We used ratchet straps like you are thinking of doing and we also installed a thin layer of padding on top of the leading edges and they turned out VERY smooth with no dents or wrinkles showing.
@@bmnesmith yeah, he had a great video on the topic, however there are nuances on the J-5 when compared to the J-3. I do like his approach. I’m within days of starting my leading edges.
Nice work and beautiful spruce. Pricing new spars for my J-3 project gave me a heart mur mur.
Yes, and I had to wait for about 4 months. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions
Looking good...Nice clean work...
Thanks for watching…now for the wing assembly video…

General, Thanks for watching! I’m way too cheap to get new PA12 wings.

Awesome video on your landing out on the island in lake Michigan. That is a sweet looking J-5 you have there.
@@DavidBuyakCessna172GPiperJ5a thanks! I manage that airstrip as a volunteer for the RAF
Beautiful work sir!! Be sure to use brand new bolts and nuts. A little work every day pays off. Keep pushing forward. 👍🏼😁
Chad, Yes, I’m a bit behind in my videos and actually my first wing is nearly done. I have all new hardware throughout. Thanks for watching.
Looks good! If the dont find you handsome...
Thanks Nathan Buyak video editor.
Looking good Dave! I'll stick to the aluminum type of wood.
Thanks Bryan, Aluminum is an old growth species of wood, very strong & light.
