I see it all the time, when marking out you should put the pen/pencil on the mark and move the straight edge to it. This gives more accurate lines and this is important especially when working on finer details.

Absolutely rubbish, the water level doesn't mean the wood is straight, just the ends are level, they aren't fixed into the wood, the nail holds the string too high, the rest of the "tips" are pointless/ dangerous !
