David Buyak-Restoration of derelict aircraft
Добавлен 5 фев 2020
I love aircraft, especially derelict aircraft. My channel is primarily concerned with the restoration of a Cessna 172 Skyhawk which I bought in June 2016 and I completed first flight in October 2020. Additionally, I purchased another project which is a 1941 Piper J5A which I'm currently working on. My Videos recorded the restoration of my 172 and is chronicling the restoration of my Piper Cub Cruiser which I started in July 2021. Future restoration is likely a 1970 VW Bug Convertible.
Episode 9 - Piper J5 Wing Roll Over Fixture
My journey fabricating a roll over fixture for my wings. This fixture will be very useful during the covering & painting process. There’s nothing like getting a run in your final paint & having the ability to simply flip the wing over & having the run slide back into itself. True victory! A word on the design. I swore I’d find a simpler, less complicated science project… but in the end, this is simply the best. Again, thanks to the super cub forum & to Chad down at Cole Aviation for the concept.

well done
I cannot imagine the feeling of accomplishment this must have given you upon completion. That level of dedication and craftsmanship to restore a piece of aviation history is something I can only envy. Unbelievable feat. God bless you, your wife and all of those who participated in the process of bringing that old girl back to life. I hope she brings you years of great memories and trouble free flying.
Such a pity you didnt take us thru the pre flight, start up , and taxi and run up and take off and landing procedures. Instead the music was uncalled for. Communication with your viewers would have been a lot more interesting and useful. Sigh!!!
Good and informative video ... just wondering if there was a reason why you didn't Zinc Chromate coat the ribs and alclad components ?
You sure you want to wade into the prime or not prime controversy?!? My thoughts are the airplane lasted 93 years at this point, I’m not changing a thing. I understand both views but I choose not to and as an added benefit, the airframe is lighter. FYI, I made the same selection on my Cessna 172.
Hi Dave! What a job! amazing! i m impressed, Although you were well surrounded, still you must be an engineer in mechanics or in electricity, at least an aviation mechanic to be able to strip the wires, to check some mechanic parts to work on the airframe (rivets and new parts changed) and beeing able to reinstall the dashboard - let alone your organisation, your home made system to flip the airframe! - WELL DONE I should be your neighbor, no just kidding i am not gonna bother you. Enjoy your lovely plane you built. Bye, Farid 🙂
Farid!!! Thank you for your kind words. I am a retired aircraft manufacturing engineer. I love airplane and I love giving them new life. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Your friend Dave
@@DavidBuyakCessna172GPiperJ5a guys like you make me like I wanna take a ppl exam I fly away.so far I learn by myself before pushing the door of a flying school.bye and thanks for your response 🙂
This is an incredible video!
Thank you for watching!
What year is the C-172? Must be early since it has the 0-300D, 145 hp engine. 😊
It’s a 172G model. It was officially test flown 12/29/1965
Beautiful project. Thanks for sharing
Hey, thanks for watching
MUITO BOM PERFEITO ! 👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🇧🇷
Thank you for watching
About how much did you spend? if you don't mind my asking? I love seeing new life being put back into old forgotten things especially planes! great work hope it's flying well!
I don’t discuss costs, just process. Thanks for watching
What are your plans for the wing rotator when you are done?
I have no plans for it but maybe we can work a deal, a very good deal.
great work
Thanks!
Connecticut for the win 💯💯💯
True, that!
It's criminal to leave a wonderful aircraft like that out in the elements for so long. Glad you found and rescued it. I've watched a few of your later videos--you do AMAZING work my friend. I'm an A&P myself, and could not have done a better job on the wing in videos 7 & 8. You should be very proud of your work!
Hey! Thank you for the encouragement!
You'd did better rebuilding Bonneville Triumph's
Haha!!!! I miss you….and those Triumph’s
You should be very proud. What a test in patience and determination. I’m very impressed.
Thank you for watching, Don
you should've went around man.... nice airplane :)
Yeah, thanks for watching!
Isn’t crazy how folks old on to the dream, lovely aircraft be damned!
Haha, exactly, that’s when guys like me swoop in. Thanks for watching

Awsome, a job well done! ✌️🙋👍🎇🎉🎊🥇❤️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching.
I salute your craftsmanship😮 Thank you so much 😊
Thank you very much!
Awesome. Makes me want to buy a 182 that has been sitting for 4 years with 1700 TT engine and airframe and restore it.
Get right after it!!! Lots of fun.
Who did you buy the spar blanks from? I have a 1941 J-5 with flak damage and it will need new wing spars.
Keith, I bought the blanks from Aircraft Spruce. It was a bit of a wait at the time. Another option is a guy named John at Big Sky Stearman has a large Sitka Spruce log and J-5 patterns. Contact info here: john@bigskystearman.com. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Nice video Dave!-daniel
Thanks 👍
Love seeing the progress. I'm about to sap wings on my J5A for aluminum spar wings.
Hey! I love your videos too. Curious, why the wing swap?
@@DavidBuyakCessna172GPiperJ5a I wanted aluminum spars, dual tanks, and need a recover. Allows me to add all this without having the plane down for too long. Will sell the wings I am flying now when I am done swapping.
Good job!
Thanks!
Dont throw it out! We can put my jeep in the rotisserie!
Funny guy Nathan
I am an engineer. I've built so much stuff in my life. Im 67. Amazing job. Its back to life.
Thank you for watching.
I’ve seen where someone has made a ring larger than the rib chord and attached it to the lift strut attachment and rolled on v-groove wheels on the floor. I’m glad that clearly didn’t work out from the beginning. I’m following your project closely. You’re doing awesome work. I have a J4A
Thanks for watching, I bought the steel conduit today for the large ring. Stay tuned
Good luck!
Looking great, cloth wire hold downs just like Piper did it
Yeah!!! I get a lot of push back on that but you’re right. When I pulled the wings apart, I took many pictures and that was the way it was done.
Good job… one hell of a project
Thanks for watching, check out my other videos on my Piper J-5a.
Awesome! I love to see aircraft restored.
Thanks, and I love restoring aircraft.
Ps noticed you have strayed talking at 6 mins in - so watched longer!
Thanks for the critique…
Wow haven't seen that cub tag in years
Cub Tag?

What an absolutly lovely video, and what a great aircraft the old 172
Thank you Mike, thanks for watching
What did you pay for the unrestorated airplane?
Sorry for the late response, I don’t really talk $$$ on this channel. Thank you for watching
Despite that the vid was now 2 years old i saw it just recently. And, dear David you and your team did a great no a fantastic job with passion, patience professiolisem and accuracy. and at the end you made her a absolutely perfect an very good looking and practically brand new 172.....congratiolation from a german 172 lover
Dear German 172 lover…Thank you for your kind words & thank you for watching. As you probably can tell I really enjoyed working on this airplane. When you get a chance, please watch my other videos on my 1941 Piper J-5a.
I just saw the N number and it is only 149 away from my father's which will be mine soon
I wonder how long it took to make 149 J5’s?
@@DavidBuyakCessna172GPiperJ5a perfection takes time
Where did you buy your spar blanks? I have a J-5 in need of restoration.
I bought the blanks from Aircraft Spruce as just blanks. Thanks for watching
Amazing job, congratulations!
Thank you for saying so and thank you for watching
Simply wow😍👍
I’m glad you enjoyed the Video.
Yeah I won't lie, I teared up at the end. SO many planes restorations are started, not many are ever finished. To have the love and support of so many people is amazing. I wish you and your wife many happy hours flying your 172.
Thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Beautiful piece of art work!
Thanks Dave!
Such clean work. Your patience is paying off by the bucket full...Please keep these videos coming...
Thanks for saying so.
Great video,Emotional
Thank you for the kind words
Thank you again for sharing your work and progress!! love how the wings are coming and detail your put in
Glad you liked it & thanks for watching
Very impressive looks fantastic love the video
Bill! Good to hear from you, I hope all is well.
This looks AWESOME! were you thinking of trying to install a left wing tank ? I didn’t have the patience like you have had with rebuilding the original wing ribs and installed all new Dakota Cub wing ribs in both wings. Hopefully the fuselage will be able to be gone through quickly in the next coming months?
I wasn’t thinking of a L/H wing tank. I think you’re the smarter one between the two of us with the Dakota Cub wing ribs. I have news for you on getting the fuselage done in a few months…I was thinking maybe a few years! Hey, thanks for staying in touch.
Your project is really moving along. Great to see the progress and to learn what you have discovered along the way. Thanks for sharing!
General, glad you enjoyed, this is good clean fun & I expect the second wing to take about 50% of the time from lessons learned
So simple in deign yet kind of complex to assemble. It looks so fragile in it's uncovered state...
Thanks for watching, true your observation. When you triangulate the wing struts into the equation things get super rigid.
I bet that didnt look that good right after it rolled our of the assembly plant
Thank you Nathan Buyak
