This video starts out with Bob Glidden's 5th World Championship win in NHRA Pro Stock, at the World Finals in Ontario California. He took out Frank Iaconio, by a nose. I had done an interview with Dave Koffel, and I will place a link to the vid. He tells the story, how he met with Bob Glidden in July of 1978, at Milan Michigan, when he was racing his undefeated Fairmont. He offered Bob a chance to race for Chrysler. Bob said he would think about it. In the Fall of 1978. at Seattle at Pacific raceway, they met up again, and bob agreed to join the Chrysler team. Don Hardy, started build on the 1978 Plymouth Arrow, and was finished by December of 1978. Dave Koffel told me when they went to Orange County Raceway for testing, the car ran an 8.60 right off the trailer. Grumpy Jenkins was there, and his jaw dropped to his knees. You have to listen to the interview to hear all of the great stories. My favorite, was that the Lenco had broken in California during testing, and Dave Koffel said to "Glidden What are we going to do?, Bob Said, I will tell you what you're going to do, get in that truck, and drive to San Diego, where Lenco was located and get the parts we need" Dave did that it was race on. Glidden lost 3 races, 2 were from redlights. See the complete list below.
Ted Spehar, built the first engine, and Chrysler provided enough parts to build 2 more engines. Bob said he could make these better. These were small block Mopars, based on the 340 X block. They were topped by iron W2 heads. Bob worked his magic, In theory they would need to flow more than 400cfm. He also worked over the Holley Pro Dominator Intakes, although I have read, that he just bolted them on. The new owner says that it makes 975 hp at 314ci, at 9800rpm. That is over 3 hp per cube. What do you guys think for horsepower?
The car was sold to Paul Gentilozzi, after bob won the 1979 Pro Stock Championship. He was going to continue racing with Chrysler, and in fact a 1980 Plymouth Volare was being built at Don Hardy Race cars, but then Chrysler went bankrupt in 1980, and pulled out of racing. Bob Glidden was stuck with the car, as the story goes. After Paul Gentilozzi, the car was sold to Jerry Hurley, and raced, followed by sale to Dempsey Hardy. Hardy raced it for a few years, then parked it in a trailer where it sat for 15 years. They had to pry the tires from the floor of the trailer. The car had parts stollen from such as carbs, but otherwise was complete. All the sheet metal and fiberglass parts were present, and complete interior.
The 79 Arrow that was built by Don Hardy Race Cars, was restored by the current owner. He did all of the restoration work, including paint. The car came with the original engine, two different Tunnel Rams, 340x blocks, and 2 sets of heads. The owner said he finished the car, and took it down the track, the Arrow ran a 8.60, letting off the gas before the end of the quarter.
The last part of the video has the car actually running, and man does it sound strong. A real piece of history, that represents a time when things were simpler, life was better, ann racing technology was being developed at a fast pace.

I saw the restored car on display at Lebanon Valley Dragway a few weeks ago. I couldn't believe it was the actual car and not a tribute. The owner did an amazing job restoring it. I talked with him for a bit, seemed like a good guy that had been around drag racing for a long time. Looking through all the restoration pictures in his binder was like looking at Top Secret information from the past that had recently been unsealed for the public to view. The owner had some of the extra parts with him too and allowed people like myself to handle them. The piston valve pockets looked like they were done by hand. The heads are like nothing you've ever seen before, they have an almost medieval quality to them. I've had W2 heads myself and they looked nothing like these, not even remotely. Glidden basically changed everything about them. And remember, these are cast iron parts too, not a billet blank chucked up in a CNC machine. It's revealing because it shows he was 110% dedicated to the job and was willing to do whatever it took to put him ahead of everyone else. It's a truly faithful restoration of a special car. And whatever horsepower figure you care to hang on it, not many engines under 400" are going to make the ground shake like that thing. It's the real deal.
You get it for sure. It is funny that some just want to point out it can’t make that much hp. Who cares what it makes, we know it is a killer combo and showed what went into a winning car. We both know it made about 825-47 in 1979 to run the number. But like you said the time to port those heads when compared to oval ports of W2. Crazy. And the matching TR. Thanks for watching
Dude, I cudnt agree more, Bob was special, like another Grumpy.....I'm a Jersey boy, and was at the Summer Nats in '87, I snapped a pic of Bob, pushing his own car twds to lanes.....no crew, no glitz and glamour......his '87 T-bird did well......we just knew he was special.....dunno where the hell the pic is at now, but I KNOW I got it......PEACE to you sir!!
He was, that kind of guy. Sad that he is gone as well as ETown. Yes find that pic and we can post it on my community section. Thanks for sharing that piece of history
@DragBoss351Cleveland I will work on finding that pic, then u may need to help me post it, I'm not to tech savy.....hope to find it, 1987 Summer Nats at E-town, Bob pushing his own car......I had to run up to try to catch him walking it, snap the pic......have an idea of where it's at.....PEACE
@user-bc9sz1dj1g peace back at you and you can email me and I can post it. Thanks.
I have said it forever. Glidden was in a league by himself! Great Video Tim. I have ALWAYS wanted to build a W2 headed 340 they are wicked
Right on! Thanks. Andy me too. When I started racing A3 heads, I was close to buying W2, always wanted that combo in a Duster. Hope you liked the tunnel ram video, better see if you did not. Your in it
@@DragBoss351Cleveland I did watch the TunnelRam vid just now! thanks for the shoutout. It was a great video just shows how far they were pushing the limit. Im getting ready to do a Tunnelram tuning video for the street since it has been so long since I did one
@UnityMotorSportsGarage your most welcome. You must more experience than I. Hopefully my set up will work well. Slow but sure. Can’t wait to dyno the different intakes and then TR. Staying tuned to UMG
What I find Amazing is 314 cid making thst kind of HP anytime, but in 1979 that is unheard of! It would be difficult to replicate those results today part for part. Awesome! So much respect for Mr. Glidden. My fsther & I met Mr. Glidden at a race when I was 10 or 11. Wonderful man.
Very amazing results. She you see how much work is in those heads and intake, blows me away. His drive and determination is what set him apart from many. Rip BobG
@DragBoss351Cleveland
I'm sure, the pics you showed were amazing. 314 inches must turn 9K rpm to make that power or close I would think? Love Drag Boss! Thanks for making your videos, interviewing cool people & doing it a friendly way. The world can use more people like yourself. I'm married and a father of 2, and you have a beautiful family. I'm happy you all love & support one another.
Thanks again
Terry
Just goes to show the make don't matter. It's all about flow, velocity, and when to open and close the valves. The welding and epoxy work is what set Bob apart. So awesome he did this with help from his family. He couldn't trust to hire people that might take his program to other teams. You don't see pro stock drivers that build there own engines these days. Every inch of his cars was dialed and tuned to perfection. It's no wonder he was so successful. Thanks for your vid,and the research and time you put in to show us this history.
@Airsally you are so right, 24 hrs of welding alone with bronze then epoxy work. Bob could weld cast iron like nobody’s business. He did have a few guys work for him, but your right they stole some of his secrets and Bob was very hard to work for, very hard. You should listen to Rusty Glidden interviews on my live chat section. Thanks
Bob Glidden was an amazing man. He did so much development to the Ford and Chrysler motors.
And racing in general, thanks David
The koffels are great people, still doing top notch work today. The SBM is still overlooked.
They sure are. Going back soon. I sure would like to build one.
Ford Mopar kicking chevs arse love it
@petergehle4222 yep 3 years in a row, 78,79,80 thanks Bob G
Dude. I've watched you for awhile now. Great channel. I know your a Boss guy. I have a friend that is a origional owner Boss1. I'm a Mopar Super Gas / Bracket Racer. Because of this video, I have nothing but respect for you. He was yours, and did what he had to do. He made me proud with this car, and the Fairmont I secretely rooted for. I have been searching and searching for info on this car and motor. Thank you. I've learned more in this video than in 20 years on the internet. I've found the precursor Thunderbird with the Boss9 that ran 212 before Bob moved to big blocks. It took Pro Stock years to go that speed. Cool piece also.
Wow Tom, makes me feel good. I loved both cars too, 78 Fairmount was my favorite. I’m glad your here, so much to learn and present. Stay tuned, and see what else we can find out. Thanks Tim
He was definitely the man, no matter what he drove. Can't help but think he put some of the tricks and tech from the Cleveland into that mopar to make it run the way it did.
He worked that mopar over like a nobody’s business. He was mr epoxy.
Bob was a true ford boy love is blue paint better then that chev shit colour by
Bob Glidden was kinda like a Kaase type genius. It didn't really matter the engine platform. His knowledge and instincts were off the charts.
@@kidsteach938 pure instinct, 200 percent drive and determination 🏁
I wish we had this channel 50 years ago!
I wish I started this aspect of the channel 10 years ago. Thanks Bruce
That car was so dialed-in, it was insane! I saw him in Pomona and I'll never forget how perfect his runs were! Bob Glidden, and his team/family, were beyond incredible!!
Those were the days my friend, when we did not have all this insanity. Thanks for sharing
Hi Tim, this is what I talk about all the time you just don't see this stuff anywhere, I appreciate what you do so much bob and his family were the nicest people I met in the racing community and the plymouth always gets left out of conversations when it comes to bob glidden thanks for showing it and the close up pictures of his engine always learn something new at dragboss garage 😊
That’s what I’m talking about Terry bringing it home. Your in the know, about DBG
That's amazing over 900 horses from 314 cubes. Wow!
Any way you look at it it is making some steam.
Just hitting another out of the park . Nice job Tim

Your always seeing and learning something new. Trying to keep you on the edge of your seat
Holy cow! 975 hp out of 314 cubic inch n/a small block! Impressive to say the least.
Let’s put it this way vrm. Back in the day he was making 825-47hp. Can only go by what I was told and you heard. That was at 9800 rpm. Keep jamming gears
Those smallblocks were making that kind of horsepower back then? That's hard to believe. If so I would bet anything that even NASCAR people were probably taking a good look at at what these guys were doing to their heads using so they might be able to use it to increase the HP in their own motors. Amazing stuff. Tons of respect for those guys back in the early days. No computers or any of that. Just lots of experience and know-how.
They and Bob were the pioneers of the industry. I think back then as I have said prob in 825-47 range. Not about the numbers but the worked involved to make power and win. Thanks for watching my friend. More to come
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Right on Tim. Great stuff!
Thanks Tim.❤

Great video Tim.
Bob was an incredibly gifted man.
Incredible talent.
Over 900 Horsepower was incredible.
Thanks for sharing this story.
Not sure if it made that much Ed, probablly more in the 830-50hp, thanks for watching
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Power to weight ratio was sure good.
Factor in the small cubic inch.👍
Win for sure.

Hey Tim , that is way cool. I love the old school engineering that goes into these cars.
Thanks for sharing.
Your most welcome rapid. Appreciate you
I still remember the pain I felt when Bob went to Chrysler, But was consoled a little that it wasn't Chevrolet. But now I kinda wish we could see if he might whip the Chevy guys at their own game. Thank you Bob.
I was happy to see Bob come to Mopar. Pay back for Petty going to Ford in 1969. Both were one year only deals.
Glad he went to Mopar and proved he could win in anything with his drive and determination.
I remember when this happened, Bob Glidden had every one scratching their heads with this move too the Mopar camp . But you have too give him credit, he made it work and work very well 😊I guess Chrysler provided the parts and such .
He took it the winner’s circle for sure. Yes they provided everything he needed unlike ford
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Yes that is right , all the races and championships he won fo Ford up to that point and they would not provide parts , hard too believe 😕
@louislepage5111 yes it is. Take care of those that care of you.
Great video! There was even a picture of a AMC in there! I still can't believe the HP numbers coming out of that old iron! I was still in high school at that time!
Thanks meister, yes she was killer for sure. Can’t say the number for sure, but going by what I was told. Definitely made 825-847 hp back In the day
Doesn't matter what make you race or prefer, the win record speaks for itself... and garners respect.
Hell Yeah! Steve, let the numbers do the talking.
That is truly amazing ! Ive been a bob Glidden fan forever . Thank you much for the pics of the heads
Your most welcome. Always fascinating to see this type of parts. And know the history
Thanks for sharing! Life long Glidden fan here!
Your most welcome. Stuff you just don’t see anymore. Stay tuned Mike
Love the old school snorkel scoop hoods.
I do too. Would like to have one hanging in DragBoss Garage. 👍👍
He was amazing and my brother met him once or twice and said he was really nice. Mad respect for all those old prostock guys. No aluminum parts, not cad design, no cnc porting, just cast iron and perseverance.
And blood, sweat, and a little luck. I like how Bob always said he was just lucky. He was the man RIP Bob.
Great upload, Tim! Thank you, for digging up this content!
Yep, digging away, waiting to see what you have in you garage to trade 😉 thanks for watching
thank you for that amazing video on Bobs Plymouth arrow Tim, that engine sounded really good. that was a great story
Thanks Craig, I loved making it too. Great history for us all to learn.
DragBoss does it! Three Homers in a row! First, Darin Morgan. Then, the Tunnel Ram video and now this Grand Slam Glidden reveal.
So Cool! Not to disparage anything here... I may be from CT. but I have a Missouri constitution. I've seen dyno results and witnessed the performances of various Pro-Stock Engines of the era and am very aware of their output. I'd like to see the dyno sheet on this one.
Thank you for this and keep 'er goin', my friend!
I’m trying to keep the history going, one video at a time. These engine probably made as I have said 825-850 back in the day. I would like to see the dyno sheet too. I have a call out to see if I can get it. Larry Meaux contacted me. He has a set of flow figures from a set of glidden heads and one of his TR. I think Bob had three total as he had three engines to run. Not sure what after a home run, but the next game. 💯👍😉
What's next? Another Homer will do. No pressure. Just another day in Your Garage. B.T.W. Love the numbers and I ain't talking horsepower here!@@DragBoss351Cleveland

intake ports are really impressive. chrysler with 4 head bolts around the cylinder had a leg up on chevy. would have loved to be there to see grumpy's jaw and head drop. Absolutely priceless.
They sure are, 80 or more hours in them I bet plus more on TR. It would have been one in a million pictures
AMAZING VIDEO !!! new sub here.... thanks !!
Thanks Tony, appreciate the sub, keep you busy with things you may never see anywhere else.
Great Video, a lot of hard work in those days.... I think the HP number is high,975 hp... in the past 10 years with SB2, Splayed, any motor, ford, chev, mopar cylinder head- with 450 +cfm flow, stronger blocks, billet lightweight cranks, piston technology, .022" rings, thin stem valves, valvespring tech, blillet rams and carbys we have, ignition systems, fuels. They get the 3 - 3.2 hp per cube.. Yes he worked the W2 heads like crazy, but seeing i've ported W2's, i would say 350-360 cfm.. the 820-840 HP adds up ....
Yep, that sounds like a great package. Lots of innovation, hard work and sacrifices. I have some flow figures coming from set of Gliddens heads and some pics of another 3 ram from the third engine. Stay tuned for that.
Great video! Didn’t know they idled at 3,500 rpms lol
Looks like about 2k earlier. Thanks for watching.

Thought you may like this 👍
Listen to that Damn engine Cackle @ 3000 RPM on an idle.
Definitely making great power and yes, that idle is killer. Listen to my car and that at idle. Love that sound of high hp. I’m only making 775hp
I'd also like to look at the Rod Shop wagon with the Indy Car engine
What’s up Chuck. Hope all is well. I have never heard of that one.
That 900+ HP seems to go against what Darin Morgan said of 3HP/CID. I'm sure it didn't make that power back in 1979. They didn't have the valvetrain parts that we can get today. I saw Bob on the fence at the Texas Motorplex circa 1990 or so. I asked him what he found to make the 340 run. He just said it was "the combination." I was hoping for a revelation or some special thing he found. He wasn't wrong, just wasn't what I wanted to hear.
they were running 48*block at that time…100% sure
What is that?
@sernagallardo thanks for the pictures my friend

@@lloydlawson6876 doing what I can and having fun doing it. Reliving the past is what is older folks do. Can’t beat it with video😉
Ford Motor Company was pivotal in Glidden running a Plymouth when they quit supporting pro stock. Chrysler gave him a full ride. He ran one race at the end of that year in his old Fairmomt just to show that he had won the championship in his slower car. It was a couple of tenths quicker than any other pro stock car without Fords support thanks to Bob’s genius and his incredible work ethic. He is the father of the modern cylinder head design, but you already know that.
You got that right. Ford didn’t give him a grease rag. It shows his work ethic, drive, knowledge and a little bit of luck took him where he needed to be. Thanks Charles
Now see W-8 OR W-9 to make that same power levels.what gets me is this Alderman came into NHRA and was Champ IHRA driver, he switched to MOPAR and everyone cried, Bob here switched to mopar and wins big and that was OK
Not sure on that whole deal. Did not know the details. Glidden fan no matter what he drove. When I think of Alderman I think spray.
Alderman and Wayne County Speed started running nitrous shortly after they started running NHRA Pro Stock. The Gliddens raised hell about it, they knew it was happening NHRA told them to keep quiet. Then after taking in the ass for a good while, Rusty and Bill put together their own car with no sponsorship, went and set both time and mph records at HRP, then kicked every body's ass in Pro Stock. While the same time, Bob either barely qualified or did not qualify, because half the field or more was running nitrous, he refused to. After it was all over, Rusty and Billy held a press conference where they showed everyone how they hid nitrous in their car. Then the shit show started. Then next numerous races, everybody slowed down. Supposedly someone broke in to Wayne County Speed's shot and broke their only two blocks with a sledge hammer, and painted Olds emblems on the walls. According to the Wayne County guys those were the only two special bore spacing blocks on the planet, that was their big secret to running so fast, and they were now destroyed. So they could not race with their super special winning blocks. They had to go back to their common bore spacing blocks and slowed down a good bit. That was their BS story. Then Alderman got tossed in prison for Coke. Alderman and Wayne County's success story, is nothing like Bob Glidden's success story.
@@ronbell3358 You want to hear the story from the horses mouth?

I wonder what the story is on the front clip, at some point he switched from a 78 to a 79. Would like to know some history on the Colts and Arrows. NHRA banned the Colt with a 95'' wb but, allowed the Arrow with a 92'' wb and how they got around the import status of the cars. The hemi Colts were just BA, squirrely as that EXP Bob built.
I idea in any of that Dave. I always wonder how they had those cars and the Capri too. Very squirrel indeed. Rip Don Carlton.
Ya. Your right. There is a story on the frontend....but i cant remember. Like added a inch to the chassis or something. It might be a couple rule changes at the same time.
@tomhowe1510 yes I recall hearing a story, but cannot tell it. Same with Mercury Capri, being aloud to race, being foreign car so to speak
That Cleveland drove around him !
😊 pretending to be a 314 ci mopar 🏁
@DragBoss351Cleveland how the heck did BG get 900+ hp out of 314 cubic inches on race gas ? Thats insane !
I wonder hour many hours are on those heads? All the work was done by hand. I read where Rehr Morrison spent 40 hours per head in welding before starting any port work.
Probably 80 hrs a head, don’t see welding, but who knows. Lots of great epoxy work too.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland What I was referring to is back when they ran cast iron factory heads. They had one block that for an unknown reason made 5-10 hp more then any other block. No matter what they did, they couldn't replicate that one. They finally broke the rear main cap with the oil pump boss and that was it. They never did figure that out as to why it was better.
@mikeleschber33 ring seal I would say. Block had degree of core shift.
Glidden could make power with any engine
And how. Getting it done
Only very few small blocks today can make 3hp per CID! I think thats a mistake!

Bet it cooked Love to have a set on. 340 in a Duster.
W2 wont fit 6 pack. Different bolt pattern.
@@tomhowe1510 it's been done plenty of times, not a bolt on but it's definitely been done more than once
@@DavidPhillips-rs5dq naw man. W2 don't have pushrods in the way. Bolts waay out.
@@DavidPhillips-rs5dqEven the manifold angles are different also. W2 intake manifolds out flow 6 packs by a mile anyway. Plus everything's 1/2 higher on w2 w5 w7 w9 stuff. I raced them for years. I tried large port std headers, with grinding, they still leaked, even with a plate. Naw won't work. I had a set T/As with a bunch work done, switched to stock econo w2, picked up 3 tenths out the box. Mopar knew design was more important than flow. It's costly for a manufacturer to change production designs, especially at that time.
a mechanic and driver you sir are not forgotten
I never knew Bob drove for Dodge and have no idea how I missed it? would that car be a power trip to drive it on a car show and cruise?
Yep and he also drove a Chevy monza in 76 with poor results. Sold the car to lingenfelter, who put a cleveland in it and cleaned up.
I was surprised to see what looks like a copper-brass downflow radiator in that car.
Most of his cars had that and a heater motor electric water pump.

No need, to get hung up on the numbers, we know what it made from running the numbers back in the day. I bet 2.8.
Then why the misleading headline?
@@DragBoss351Cleveland
@@DragBoss351Cleveland yup, got your point. Just think it important to separate legend from history.
What I find remarkable, was that Glidden jumped to Mopar, and developed a entirely different engine to the level he did, as quickly as he did.
Finding out more of that process would be way interesting, as time doesn’t seem it would allow for just throwing ideas at it, and I suspect there was more R&D resources available or provided to him, going in, rather then him starting out, cherry.
I've always liked Bob Glidden he was a true racer, but I've always wondered back in the hay day of pro stock before it got to be BS see the times what they ran in 1/4 mile but what would they run in a 1/8 mile.
At his best time of 8.43, he was running 5.35 at 129. As per draglist.
I have a theory mate. I think they may have played around the firing order to balance her out. Let’s not forget the Windsor engine had to have a different firing order to alleviate vibration issues and it’s basically the same engine.
So tune the little one and send it to the moon.
And they did.
And on the seventh day-
God created, the Cleveland, lol. Yes they got it down and too the moon they went.
HUGE fan of Glidden, also of this channel. But 975hp... c'mon, just no. But still, the car is/was awesome. BTW, there was a great article in either Car Craft or Hot Rod back in the day covering his very first time testing this car, describing how it was so cold they poured gas on the starting line and lit it to get heat in the track. Glidden was a legend in so many ways, technical, effort, competitor, etc.
Thank you so much. Wait for the sequel, may get it done this weekend. We will see what a set of these heads flowed and hp potential. I have a cool article to go with video. 😉
Is that the same Paul gentilozzi that ended up going grand am racing in the 90s?
I believe so, trans am too?
How come that engine combo hasn't been replicated in Comp eliminator?it would be hard to beat today?
Sure would, but those guys are not Bob Glidden.
Several years ago I heard that he was caught running a sneaky Pete nitros setup that was concealed in his roll bar. I even saw pictures. After that I didn’t care for him anymore.
You heard wrong, that’s not how it was. Learn the truth.
Are you going to Columbus " for the FORD swap meet !!
Not sure right now, I need to check the dates.
@DragBoss351Cleveland
On the Cleveland heads, will I need to put Hardin seats in ? are hurting seats recommended for
The reporter that interviewed Bob just died
When was this Fred?
Not very long ago, as in a few months, I remember seeing his pic in the article, I just hope it was not a reprint of an old article@@DragBoss351Cleveland
It’s cool and all and I’m a mopar guy. But I don’t believe that it makes 975 hp. That’s the same hp per cubic inch as a current top running Aussie pro stock engine.
Read the description. Back In the day he was making 825-847 is my guess. Only going by what I was told as you saw in video. Just enjoy your winning 340x and bad to bone W2s. 🏁 hope you subbed lots more on the way, from a Ford guy
I second that disbelief. 340s almost always exceed expectations from my POV, and the old W2s have great power-making ability, but 900HP, let alone 975HP, out of that engine...I don't think so. If it had that kind of power, it would have run a helluva lot quicker than mid 8s, and the top end would have been...well, significantly faster, I believe.
Love that Glidden's Arrow got some of your efforts, Tim. Thanks.
@Zekais yep probably not that much, but I went with what I was told and makes a great headline 😉
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Heh heh. You can only go with what is provided, I know. I don't mean to be a typical online nay-sayer, but that sure stretched my my credulity.
@Zekais 😉 stay tuned as you never know what you will see on DBG
Never mattered.😊
If you had a piece of history like this, why wouldn’t you put it on a dyno to show what they actually made! Over 3hp per cubic inch, even with today’s parts is rare, & only the best get it! Please don’t just buy BS that people brag about!
I care about the car, and it’s history. This is something you don’t see everyday. Glad you enjoyed the video. 😉
Maybe they're using a correction factor 4000 ft below sea level???
@paulvincent3280 not sure on that.
Seriously doubt that is a Glidden prepped block. He was known to have removed the lifter valley and bodged up and raced (and won with) the first 48* lifter valley as the factory 59 degree lifter angle wouldn't cut it.
Working on the video as we speak
I Thought pro stock racer Don Campanello bought the car at some point and raced it ?
Nope, not that I know of.
Yup, Small Block Mopar, W2 headed.
That’s what I’m talking about W2 for you
If i remember correctly, part of the reason he went Mopar was because NHRA had weight factored him three times already and he was worried about a 4th change might be too much. So he switched to the arrow, which got weight factored at least twice before he returned to ford. Also if i'm correct his return to ford was partly due to the change to the 500 inch motor being the standard, but not sure. I know the change came in this area, but not sure exactly when
The main reason he went the Chrysler was they offered to pay for everything. Ford never gave him a nickel.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland, I understand that, but Chevrolet has basically owned NHRA since the 60's bribing away to get their cars favorably treatment. And while ford has always been up there, they were never as big in it as dodge or chevy, Ford was the big guys in NASCAR though.
@crazylarryjr I agree, I always figured Wally Parks was getting a kickback or had stock in Gm. Ford always a winner in my book.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland, I was always a Dodge guy myself, but had love for all makes, each had their cool cars
@crazylarryjr I do too. I love all cars and engines. Just prefer Ford’s.
A guy in Fort Lauderdale had that car and a bunch of 340 Parts I got a block from him VGs race cars
Yes the car did come from FL sat in trailer for like 20 years. Tired we’re stuck to floor.
great car and resto. im struggling to believe the 900hp claim. Can anyone share a link to a dyno sheet if theres one out there please?
It probably ain’t 900, but with previous flow figures for bobs heads and working with Larry Meaux, he came up with about 825+ hp. For Bobs original engine.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Bob Phillips ran a 78 Arrow with 312ci( 4.10 X 2.95) W2 Headed SBM back in the late 70s early 80s and was running 8.70s at 2800 lbs, that was an 840s-860s HP square ported W2 heads(obviously hand crafted W2s) Ryan Johnson who ran Shady Dell speed shop out of Pa , had also built a few 340W2 base rockets making in the high 800 Hp range from 335-345CI. Dude Im back. 7:09 for the life of me... I can't understand why the intakes valves Canted open TOWARDS the cylinder wall. It's a 4.04 X block bore. There's room but the unshrouded open airflow would be toward the middle of the bore. Im stumped.
I’m missing what you’re saying. W2 heads are not canted valve heads?
Welcome back Tom
@@DragBoss351Cleveland no I race w-2. These can't outward instead inward to un shrowd the valve to suck all the way around the valve. Look in you Cleveland. Valve leans the other way. I don't understand this at all.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland the only thing I can think of is the valves actually hit when open overlap, but port size was more important for air. The chambers aren't wide enough for a 2.19 at huge lifts? I dunno but it sure is leaning the wrong way in the pic.
@@tomhowe1510Not sure on that. It may be the valve angle, but they are not canted, agreed?
How the heck do you get 900hp out of an engine that size without forced induction. Did it have nitrous?
No, called build it right. Some NASCAR engines have made that with flat tappet cam and 12.5:1
@@DragBoss351Cleveland that's Soo badass. Definitely takes a different breed to accomplish that.
@blindabinda1234 man you got that right. 💯🏁
No way that motor made 3 ho per inch.
Pro stock truck engines didn’t make that.
Ok, enjoy the video
Depends on who you talk to
Richard Maskins told me 1080 outta 358 equals around 3hp per
A NASCAR prior to restrictions made 900 with a flat tappet and one 830 carb just FYI
@larewardrop282 thanks for giving evidence that it is possible.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland W2 head in my opinion is way better than any iron small block Ford or Chevy head at that time.
I was stock with a 18deg valve angle and shaft rockers.
You could angle mill to 16deg we also ran 1.8 rocker ratio and 2.12 or if moving guide 2.15 in valves also spark plug was in better location!
X block safely bored to 4.155 deck height could be anywhere from 9.5 to 8.8
Just truly the most bad ass small block of all time and copied by all !
@@larewardrop282 love this info Larry thanks. From research they did not make many of the 340x blocks. Yes truly killer race stuff. Thanks
Ports are not the restrictions in any head . The throat is the restriction!
Every section of intake tract has potential for restriction
@MrBlackbutang may be, but you said ports are not restricting in any head, however if the air is not getting there to begin with, .ie any induction aspect before throat can and does restrict, hence porting. Jmo 😉

9800 rpm is where that engine make peak. So over rev-by 500
No way that engine made 975 hp 775 at the most and that being generous.
Right, appreciate your opinion.
The weight and mph tell the story. 900hp/3+per cube in ANY iron head motor= dream on.

Amazing the kind of power that could be made with borrowed Chevy technology and no nitrous. Too bad the same couldn't be said about them Furd Clebelands. Don't get it twisted, the Clebeland was also borrowed Chevy technology...it just needed a little bumper fluid to help it along. 🤪
Come on phishstick, don’t see any borrowed technology. And please explain how the Cleveland borrowed Chevy technology too please. Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland C'mon Dragbuss, haven't we been over this on YB? Canted and splayed valve technology was brought to the automotive world by Chevy. FACT Chevy had a canted valve head way back in 1936. FACT Mystery Motor came out in 1963 and, foolishly, Chevy gave a Mystery Motor to Holman-Moody before patenting its revolutionary new technology. H-M hands the Mystery Motor into the grubby paws of Furd...who then "borrows" the BBC tech and comes out with the 385 and 335 heads. FACT So take off those blue colored fanboy glasses and you'll see it. 😝
Good video but next time don't forget to mention Bub's famous bumper fluid. 🤣🤣
@p1315 actually there is a difference between canted valve and splayed valve. Better read that. A subscriber has told me the splayed valve head was developed in the mid 20s. Second of all the cleveland may have a similar splayed valve arrangement but that is it when compared to BBc third of all, who really cares, does that make your brand superior, does that make you a better person. Learn to appreciate what each engine has for a design and what it’s pros and cons are. Who care who developed what first, it’s what’s done with it. Not sure why you look through orange glasses all the time. Does it make you feel like a better person, does it make you feel you are on a winning team. Please explain the significance of a company developing something before another. The key is Ford made a product better. Simple. Glad to see your alive and opinionated 🤣
@@DragBoss351Cleveland I know there's a difference, that's why I pointed out that Chevy brought canted valve heads to the masses in 1936 and splayed valve heads in 1963 in my earlier reply. 🤨 1Erik from YB doesn't count as a credible source on anything...especially splayed valve heads.
