  • This video was one that I did plan to make. I had made the video on Bob Glidden's 79 Plymouth Arrow. It showed the history, and Restoration of the car. I added a link to the original video. Larry Meaux, From Meaux Racing Heads, contacted me and was impressed with the video, and all the pics I had gathered. He has all my episodes recorded, and organized. Thanks Larry for watching DragBoss Garage.
    He told me he had an original Bob Glidden 337 ci Pro Stock engine, back in 1989. He had flowed the heads, and still had the flow sheets. He also had an original Holley Pro Dominator tunnel ram, that was welded and ported by Bob. Larry Meaux owns, and developed MaxRace Software company. He developed the Pipemax, ET Pro/Analyzer, these are a complete set of programs, that can be used for developing engines, head work, dyno and drag simulations. Larry has been porting cylinder heads and flow bench work since 1972. He also is tops in engine Dyno tuning.
    Larry took the modified W2 head flow figures he had, and all the build specs for one of Bob Glidden's 337 ci Pro Stock Engines, and incorporated the data into his program. He also used his best time for the 79 Arrow, 8.43. at 161mph. Larry input the data into his MaxRace Software, PipeMax, to come up with HP numbers, cam specs, and a myriad of information. Larry then placed HP, and other info, into his ETa Analyzer, and came up with the ETs, and others numbers.
    It is amazing the information that can be obtained, using his PipeMax Software. Larry is developing new versions of his software versions, and may come on and do a live chat, make sure you ask him too in the comment section.
    DragBoss Garage" Where Your Always Seeing, and Learning Something New" Thanks Larry Meaux Racing Heads

    The amazing thing about this era is that it was only quarter mile et and speeds that were displayed. The speed trap of the era was 66 foot before and 66 foot after the finish line, or a total timed distance of 132 feet. It would not be uncommon to see him produce such low speeds with this car, much like the fairmont, because of pulling the chute early and increasing that time span. The speed trap was shortened to just 66 feet for 1989. No more "driving it out the back door." It was NHRA's effort to slow the cars down. Also consider that incremental timing blocks were not present until the mid to late 80s. The 60 foot clock appeared around 1987 and the 330 and 660 clocks did not show up until the 1988 winternationals. It was 1989/1990 before you even had half track speeds and 1,000 foot ets. I say it is amazing because I feel like that car accelerated down track way better than people realized, but there was nothing to compare it to. You couldn't go test someplace like you could today and just make 60 foot or half track runs and get an idea of what the car was doing, there were no clocks to support it. Not to bring up a sore subject, but the incremental clocks are what got people to start pointing fingers at the Wayne County Dodge because the numbers were way off everyone else but the finish line was the same. I don't mean to say that Bob was cheating, I say it because he was even better than his time slips showed. The track and tire technology of today will never let us know how well he was really running back then, but I'd love to see someone take the replica car on an all out pass now to see what it would really do. I'm guessing there is another .05 to .10 of a second that Bob was holding in the bank, and another 5-8 mph. I'm guessing there was a lot of testing done back then and the Glidden family knew exactly what they were holding thanks to a test session somewhere or track rental away from the public eye.

      @DragBoss351Cleveland  7 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the comment. Lots of good info. I had no idea on any of the track timing or development. I agree, he had more in it. In match race trim, I think he went 8.3x. I have heard the same thing about ET/mph with Wayne County. I remember his first runs in 79, pulled the car out of trailer and went 8.60, grumpy was there with his mouth hanging open.

      @rolandtamaccio3285 7 месяцев назад +1

      ,,, the incremental timing helps tremendously , to be able to spot a weakness , and then target that area . Of course the really well direct connected had some incrementals , at closed test sessions ; although I am not 100 percent sure of this . I heard that Mopar did set up some occasionally .

      Don't forget one thing about Glidden - to him it was etched in stone that the first 120 or so feet were absolutely critical. Long before there was a major attention to 60' times, Etta was out on the starting line with a video camera, recording chassis reaction, squat, tire wrinkle and slippage.
      After each pass they were back in the trailer, they knew tape speed and calculated time/place in a run, and had visual reference of the hit, and how it reacted and where.
      Just one more detail that made Glidden the best of the best.

    Your right. There does seem to be a disconnect between the 8.48 elapsed time and a speed of only 149 to 150 mph. I would expect trap speed to have been about 10mph faster. It does look like Glidden pulls the chute a little early. Back then trap was measured based on 60’ before and 60’ after the finish line. So, throwing out the laundry 60’ before the finish line probably knocked some trap speed off.

    I talked with Bob and Etta at their shop when they went to Dodge. Was buying some Ford parts so that opened the door for a couple questions.
    I asked them what was the difference between their program and the rest of us and it came down to his ability to work around the clock and do this daily. The man had endurance to die for. Never took a break unless it was necessary. Guy's like me got up, traveled to our job, drove home and did the things around the house and worked on the car as much as possible. Like real modern facts, Australian pro stock 400ci-nearly 1200HP.. American pro stock 500ci-1500HP. look at the parts, heads, blocks,pistons,manifolds....space age technology,intake ports raised sky high.........1979 was a different ... ive ported W2 heads, and 337cfm with Bobs work looks feesable...... 400 cfm, i think no way.... Nearly three-thousand views in seventeen hours! The DragBoss audience has been hungry for a while. Come and get it... The feast is now served! The last six or so weeks of fasting were for good reason. The best reason of all... Family. This post will certainly prompt many opinions and conversations in respect to Bob Glidden's brief move to Plymouth and his success that never wavered. Hard work, dedication and family involvement were always the keys to his accomplishments no matter the endeavor or the brand campaigned. Bob was known for "putting out the laundry" early in a run which held the speed down. This was usually his normal procedure. It began during his early years in Pro-Stock and continued throughout. Bob, the poker player. In Bob's words, when Steve asked him if sandbagging, Glidden replied, "No, not really." 😉The dyno results of approx. 800 H.P. for the little Chrysler Engine is feasible given the later Pro-Stock small-block development and technology of those years. As mentioned, Dyno figures vary given conditions, adjustments and the actual Dyno utilized. The technical documentation presented is at times fuzzy but much of it goes to support the engine's capability. It would be great to have Larry Meaux speak to clarify, the analytical procedures and the results. Ready for more, Mr. DragBoss! And Thank You for the kind reference to "Rocky." All of our four-legged furry friends will be waiting for us at the Gates when our time comes.

So thank you for missing me, lol. I have seen Bob pull the cord, early in a few vids. I had said that same analogy about poker. Know when to hold, fold, and pull the cord. The information is so in depth, hard to give an easy explanation. I will see if I can get Larry on for a chat. I wondered if you would catch me mentioning Rocky, rip. @@DragBoss351Cleveland I wonder if Butch did the radical lifter bore modification to his X blocks as well because I do know that the lifters were at a severe angle laying close to the block valley wall and when you dropped in the push rods they also had to go up in the head at a severe angle, but it worked. I read a article about Dick landys approach to correct that problem I see that you have the photos of his block, yep where the breathing vents are he would lop the inner lifter bores away length wise front to back and actually made chrome moly tubing and metal straps to tie everything together while brazing was being done and he used something called mastic to close up the original lifter bores, also in his cylinder heads he would use that stuff to shape the ports much like what you showed us with the Glidden heads, oh and before I forget after many years of wonder what happened to a certain silver gray mustang II it was in a video it locked like it was made years ago but Jack Rouch and a Ford engineer were responsible for the build in Jacks shop it had a bored and stroked 460 poked out to 505, hot rod magazine did the feature on the car but never followed up on the car and I was just a kid coming out of high school , that was bad ass it had plenty of tire stuffed between the wheel tubs and this was before pro street, wonder what they did with that car?
